#2ndchat is a Twitter hashtag that can be used to chat, collaborate, and grow with other second grade educators from around the world. Every other week we will discuss a different topic. It's a great way to help grow your PLN (Professional/Personal Learning Network) and share ideas with others.
Hi, my name is Kariss. I'm in California and currently a third year University student with an interest in possibly teaching elementary. I'm also an Elf. #2ndchat
A1: I'd much rather bring food from home-- I like a nice warm meal- fills me up and gets me through part 2 of the day. It's usually leftovers from the night before 😋 #2ndchat
Many weeks I will use the crock pot on Sundays to cook at least 6 chicken breasts with broth. Then each day I bring something different like BBQ chicken, chicken salad, chicken quesadilla---shredded style-- it's so easy when the hard part is already cooked! #2ndchat
A2: We did an unplugged activity we’re each student made a holiday symbol. We made a grid of their pictures. Then students wrote directions based on a start point and ending at their symbol great for use with Bee-bot #2ndchat
Q2: I shared this the other day.... so many teachers might not have access to enough computers-- coding can be awesome WITHOUT computers! Check this out: https://t.co/U7SCmXJxgN#2ndchat
A2: the most I’ve done is students logging into https://t.co/r2jzoxgc7p and complete the sequencial task. Kids really like it, but would love to stretch my learning a bit. #2ndchat
A3: I like to listen to Hillsong United worship music when I'm working before or after school. Keeps me calm and peaceful. I need it for me. My mind is always spinning with things I want to do :) #2ndchat
A3: With kids Mostly Jazz or the modern instrumentals on Pandora. Right now a jazzy street band named Lucky Chops. Without kids, modern pop, jazz, but mostly rock. #2ndchat
A3: I love my Spotify! I'm bored after a minute or two into the song 😬 I love picking a genre or a mood and just going for it! Right now of course it's all holiday music. I'm really digging Spanish Holiday as I'm working on my fluency! #2ndchat
A3. I’m good at tuning out, rarely “hear” what’s playing. (Grew up in family of 7; have 4 kids of my own) But I do need noise. Silence is distracting to me. #2ndchat
My favorite thing to play for my kiddos while they are working are covers of their favorites--- played with different instruments, genres, artists, classical, etc... they freak out when they figure it out--- I found Watch Me Whip acoustic version! They loved it! #2ndchat
A4: I think mainly in my incorporation of tech more focus on creativity, collaboration, and communication versus a game to play or listening station. #2ndchat
A4 as a student I've changed in the sense that I've matured. I came into college more focused on the opportunities and fun aspect but now am grounded in my responsibilities and appreciate the process of learning a lot more
#2ndchat
A3. My kids@have a playlist- they picked songs and I play them as they enter and for #softstarts lots of current and some I love that they are loving like Ain’t no mountain high enough, walking on sunshine and better place;)
#2ndchat
A4: Now that I am on the PD side of things, I can really see things from a different angle. I can also take more time to learn and develop skills- old school or new school-- that I can share with teachers and students. #2ndchat
A4: I’m a 3rd year teacher. Now that I know my curriculum really well, I’ve been able to increase technology usage with lessons. Preparing for 1:1. #2ndchat
A4. Geezzz. Where do I begin? I have grown so much- fabulous PLN find amazing ideas - some work and some don’t but kids and I fail enthusiastically- blended learner - connecting more globally- kids have voice and choice #2ndchat
Definitely! Twitter has been a game changer for me! I've learned more on Twitter in two years than I learned from 15+ years with ongoing grad classes! #2ndchat
A4: I choose my tasks more carefully trying to make them more meaningful, open ended and multidiscipline. I also use tech to promote problem solving and collaborating instead of just adding it to add it! #2ndchat
Q5: Tricky for me because I don't write plans-- I definitely have agendas... but great lesson plans should have an engage activity, goals (that are teacher and kid friendly), supporting awesomeness, brain breaks, a form of assessment and of course... eval for you! #2ndchat
A5 no lesson plans yet but if i were to become an educator I'd hope that my lessons could be student centered and hands on while still covering standards and meeting the necessary criteria #2ndchat
#2ndchat Here a snapshot... I made mine in google and make a copy each week.I edit by the day. Then I have a folder of all my weekly plans to work off for following years... though I love to recreate the wheel...sighhh
A5. Due to treatments and only at school in mornings- I’ve had to lump majority of subjects into a short amount of time so plans are ever changing;) #2ndchat
Q6 I'd have a white shirt with the hashtag #2ndchat in blue in the center. Around it would be different symbols that represent elementary school circling "#2ndchat"
#2ndchat
A7 I used to tutor algebra before technology became a popular educational tool. I would go old school and just use a classic pencil and paper. #2ndchat
Lesson plan template used “at a glance”; unit plan created for math, reading, and other topics. The unit plan has lessons in sequential order; flipchart created for each lesson #2ndchat
Q7- ELA We researched ways to be good friends using tons of books. Then took the authors messages and made an awesome bulletin board to share with our peers what we'd learned. #2ndchat
A5 Objectives, Materials, Anticipatory Set, Procedure, Closure, Assesment, Differentiation! Too much! I use https://t.co/pZ6H2uRBus and look to link it altogether! #2ndchat
A7: Love to have large butcher paper for skill like nouns (or verbs, blends, etc) and have Ss cut pictures out of magazines to glue on and label. Boom! Skill, fine motor, visual, writing, fun! #2ndchat
Q8- We're doing one on recycling and ocean pollution. I wait all year to teach it... It's my passion project. Lots of analyzing PSA's about ocean pollution, virtual tours of recycling centers, and hopefully a plastic bag drive! #2ndchat
A8: I'm looking forward to hearing these responses! I'd love to help my teachers use more PBL-- they really struggle with time and I think that planning is an issue. I think it's a perfect way to incorporate standards! #2ndchat
A8:We’ve completed the timeline PBL that @missmac100 & I wrote back in the spring. EVERYONE at school loves it and there was so much learning involved: measurement, questioning, reasoning, collaboration, creativity, computer skills, surveying, data. #2ndchat
A7 Love integrating art into lessons. For example, introducing inferencing using famous artwork. What do we see? How can we infer the rest of the "story?" Then move to the text.#2ndchat
A student (grade 1) came to me today to ask me if I saw the polar bear video! He was devastated! Kids pick up on a lot of "adult" things... I know that he would love to learn more and find out how he can help! #2ndchat

A8. Posed question how could you make a difference at home, school, community and world? Kids researched charities and picked one/ decided on making snowman sooo for police and fire-they studded and made cards- made giving tree and attaching bulbs when completing task #2ndchat
