Welcome to #txeduchat We've got a great conversation planned about authentic audiences! Tell us a little about yourselves and we'll get started in a moment or two!
My name is Allie Porter. I am a student at the University of Oklahoma but looking froward to teaching in Texas and can’t wait to learn about authentic audiences. #txeduchat
A1: For me, it was about the audience. Even with a focus on mastery of the content, I could bring authenticity by including an authentic audience. #txeduchat
A1: I start with the end in mind. What do I want them to learn and understand, and how can I use their interests to get them there? What problems do I want solved? How much choice do I give each S? I decide and go from there. #txeduchat
A1: I help create learning experiences that give students Agency - active agents in the learning and
Connect students with authentic audience
#txeduchat
A1: @moffatt_teach and I just presented at TCEA - Project-Based Learning for a Global Audience. We connected them to the Global Goals. This year, they will connect with a classroom in Egypt. Here's our site about the project from last year - https://t.co/uwUa8ZHul3#txeduchat

A2: Sometimes you can do this really effectively with cross-curricular PBL units. I especially liked combining my ELA classes with social studies classes for shared assignments. #txeduchat
A2: Since my focus was usually literacy and Social Studies I spent a lot of time in biographies. Biographies allow teachers to teach fiction and nonfiction and tie in people in the other subject fields! The kids loved learning about real people! #txeduchat
A2: I teach Literacy. I pull resources from other subjects constantly. If I can help a S understand another subject while still teaching them the skills needed to be successful in mine, then why not? Teamwork makes the dream work! #txeduchat
A2 Over and over again: Science (and all of STEM) does not happen in a vacuum. Always look at economic and cultural driving forced and follow on effects. #TxEduChat
A2 Especially when it comes to computer security and privacy issues in the news. It is easy to create projects to sample security in programming. Just put a server on the net - it will be attacked. #TxEduChat
A2: during my expository writing unit I always partnered with either social studies or science. They chose the topic. I taught the kids to write expository and the other teacher taught looked at THE SAME paper for content. #txeduchat
A2: I think in today's testing crazed curriculum, it takes teachers who connect with other subject area teachers & get creative with the TEKS together to produce activities relevant to the real world. It's difficult. #txeduchat
So true! Nothing exists in a vacuum - it's almost impossible to separate subject areas or teach one without referring to others. Great reminder! #txeduchat
A2: By bringing multiple subjects into a discussion, the students can critically think about how different topics work together in the real world. For example, English and social studies can work together to create essays about citizenship. #txeduchat
A3: When we were creating student blogs, it increased student interest in quality when I began randomly choosing student posts to tweet about on my Twitter. Real people reading real student work! #txeduchat
A1: I believe that in order to connect it to real world experiences, you must first attain the students interest and apply it to the class. As long as the objectives are aligned, the path to get there can be made with the students in mind.#txeduchat
Lisa, I agree the more we allow students to ask questions (instead of all the questions being given to them) & PBL, including STEM activities allows for more learning than if there is just a strict attention to one subject area. #txeduchat
A3: My son's school has the students working on PBL projects for a semester. Then they have to present them to community members to get feedback. #txeduchat .... because of this is why he chose to attend.
A3 I think we should be inviting community members into the classroom frequently. To speak about what they do - to mentor - to listen to our learning. #txeduchat
A3: After utilizing google hangout, it is a great way to connect classrooms or students with professionals. Also, Flipgrid is a great way for them to post about what they have learned and other people can comment their ideas and thoughts back to them. #txeduchat
I have also used a @zoom_us set-up to facilitate student collaboration and conversations off-campus with community leaders and other campuses. #txeduchat
A3: I love what @KariEspin and @mcnairan3 shared about pushing student learning through the use of social media, and bringing in outside experts through tools such as @neprisapp Skype in Classroom and even a @padlet “help wanted” wall #txeduchat
A4: To begin with, our ideas about what constitute "assessment" tools might need to be revised. Introducing student conversations into the assessment mix is a key for me. #txeduchat
A4: Definitely RUBRICS and Conferencing!!!! This is the most authentic discussion ... and of course UbD like @Paige_O82 mentioned earlier. Start with what you want students to know, understand, and be able to do! #txeduchat
We did a Global Play Day activity a couple of years ago with Zoom. My students were actually talking with students from 4 countries at one point. #txeduchat

@LiteraryFusions, @AllieTeacher, @zoom_us
A4: I like being able to take feedback digital with tools like @KaizenaHQ or @JoeZooApp for Google Docs that allow for asychronous voice feedback specifically tied to relevant spots in writing #txeduchat
A3: You have so many options these days! @Flipgrid is an easy way for Ss to share information and get feedback. Ss are able to respond to each other and offer suggestions and feedback. #TXEduChat

A5: allows for students to publish work for an authentic audience, and allows students to demonstrate mastery of content in ways never before possible #TxEduChat
A5 We've talked so much technology already. I'd like to add virtual field trips. With budget cuts and logistics ... this is a great activity! @librarye1f took my son on a tour of the Alamo from her living room ... he couldn't wait to complete his reading after that! #txeduchat
A4: We just started a badging program https://t.co/1T8CaqP7BV and teachers turn in an application w/lesson plan & student work. I'm amazed at the creativity using video, collaborative Google Slides, Google Docs, STEM products, etc. #txeduchat
To my chat friends, my apologies. I have a six year old who found out she has strep throat today, and I'm currently disinfecting lots of things. I'm excited to pop in later and read through this chat...so sad to have missed it! #txeduchat
A4: Technology gives students a place to pursue creativity whether that be videos, pictures, or text bubbles. It also help students who need assistive technology to work on different projects. It eases boredom and creates a fun atmosphere for students learning. #txeduchat
A4: Not every assessment needs to be formal. I find that my Ss respond better and are more receptive to informal assessments. Conversations, a quick summary of what they learned, etc. They build up confidence w informal assessments b4 they tackle the formal assessment. #TXEduChat
Yes!!! Something that can be helpful! It’s like when my son misses his shot in basketball he doesn’t need someone telling him he missed (he knows) - he needs feedback on how to improve. #txeduchat
By the way, (shameless plug warning) some of you need to check out this conference and submit a proposal. You've got some great ideas to share! @ESCRegion11#txeduchat
Passionate about literacy? We want to hear from you!
Submit your idea for a session & you could be a presenter for our summer literacy conference! Do you have a heart for helping ALL students grow? Click here to submit your proposal: https://t.co/zBdxMpi9rP#lit4all#r11literacy
A6 From trainings we have done in schools, we have found that teachers need more assistance seeing and PLAYING in PD. Then time to figure out how to implement in their class. #txeduchat
#txeduchat Thom from Austin joining late tonight :) Math, robotics, and YouTube Video Production teacher. A6 - I've sent out a blog/tweet in efforts to share student work. But tweets are lost in the ether within about 10 min.
A5 Learners can verify and investigate your content in real time. They should be encouraged to do this rather than viewing cell phones and tablets as a distraction. #TxEduChat
A6 I think sometimes others are frightened about all the things that MIGHT happen by breaking down walls. I try to refocus them on all that can happen if they do! #txeduchat
Have you tried creating a list of relevant Twitter accounts and working within that smaller list? That helped me a little bit with some student response tweets. #txeduchat
A6: Through Twitter I’ve made connections with multiple authors. One sends my Ss new books from time to time, and another is working on a video message for them! Networking is key. Try anything you think will benefit your Ss. If it works 😁 if not move on. #TxEduChat
Class websites with student work can be shared. For a parent with family on other continents, it's a way for them to see what my kids are doing! #txeduchat
A6 GitHub it a powerful, real world tool, for project hosting and collaborative development. They provide extensive educational support. https://t.co/a6dEzUkkoR#TxEduChat

When I hear that term, I most often go to the idea of creating meaningful collaborative conversations about the work, or providing for audiences beyond the grading teacher. #txeduchat
A7: When kids have a voice - when they feel that what they are working on is important - when they see how what they are learning is beneficial - they are more engaged. Also they will retain more. #txeduchat
Do you create these websites yourself or do you go through an app? I have heard ClassDojo is a great app to show parents behavioral and academic achievements! #txeduchat
#txeduchat A7 Students have created Google Sites math blogs and share them with each other and can get extra points for getting someone outside of our immediate community to read and comment on it.
A5: Technology plays an important role in providing students choice, collaborating/sharing learning with others, creating, & being self-directed. So many ways to experience learning if we can see beyond it being a substitute for traditional teacher directed activity #txeduchat
Questioning our fundamental assumptions often produces interesting results. For me it means drawing lessons from, or that are closely related to real world applications. As opposed to learning for learning's sake, as fun as that is :) #TxEduChat
#txeduchat They can find someone themselves or pick from a pool of other educators who said they'd be on board with reading a blog or two and commenting.
A7 my personal kids are always most excited when they have critical discussions in the classroom or when they feel they can make a difference. #txeduchat
A7: There is greater joy in learning as they see themselves not as passive recipients, but as those who have meaningful voices. Learning isn't liner - but rhizomatic - it's shared at it's best. #txeduchat
@txeduchat A7: I have not had the opportunity to give a lesson to a classroom. I would love to hear of authentic experiences that teachers have given to their students! #txeduchat
#txeduchat - I lost my internet on the device I was using! Thank you so much for joining us! I now have so many new tools to check out and think about!
