#personalizedPD chat. A fast-paced, fun chat to discuss personalized professional development for educators. We discuss what it is, why it's better than traditional PD, how to create personalized PD opportunities, how to scale it from individuals to districts, and how to inspire it from individuals to districts to want more and more of it. Hosted each week by Jason Bretzmann @jbretzmann and Kenny Bosch @KennyBosch and moderated each week by a guest moderator. 8pm Central each Tuesday.

A1 Going back to my GIF, test prep. If we were able to teach standards to mastery and go deep instead of a mile wide, test prep wouldn't be so crucial. #personalizedPD
  • ChaoticTeacher May 15 @ 9:06 PM EDT
A1: Erg. Paperwork!! Not grading, this is expected. But data collection, Evaluations, filling out forms and random stuff. #personalizedpd
  • sew1080 May 15 @ 9:07 PM EDT

  • ccormier_edu May 15 @ 9:08 PM EDT
A1: Naysayers are draining. Those that feel the need to buzzkill and passion squash. I try to counteract them with reminder quotes/stories planted in my bag, office, car and with a “go to” PLN that builds me up! #personalizedPD

Exactly was going to say the very same thing.#personalizedPD A1. Peers looking for attention ,leaders throwing their weight, asking students to reflect but they themselves unawares of the havoc they wreak in the atmosphere...the impact they have & they are so blissfully ignorant

Question 2 is coming your way... #personalizedPD
  • mr_hayes May 15 @ 9:13 PM EDT
Q2: What are some warning signs of teacher fatigue and/or burnout? #personalizedPD
  • sew1080 May 15 @ 9:13 PM EDT
A2 Negativity. Constant negativity. They no longer see the point in putting in the work and trying new things when something doesn't go well the first time. #personalizedPD
  • tracyscottkelly May 15 @ 9:13 PM EDT
    A) Arriving late, leaving early, not visible on campus, using sick days more often, lack of creativity, etc. #personalizedPD
  • KammasKersch May 15 @ 9:14 PM EDT
Hey there! Just tuning in for my first #personalizedPD here! Kammas from Delaware, HS chem and comp sci T.

A2. Lack of empathy, apathy with feedback, no desire to go in to work. #personalizedPD
  • KammasKersch May 15 @ 9:15 PM EDT
A1: Apathy! I think apathy is more of the most draining parts of teaching. I want to connect and inspire my students to grow, but sometimes the yearn to learn isn't there for my high schoolers #personalizedPd
  • Rdene915 May 15 @ 9:15 PM EDT
A2 absences, also hear Ss talking about it, negative attitudes, #personalizedPD
    In reply to @mr_hayes

#personalizedPD A2. Frustration and irritability. I get stressed and it shows on my face and my behaviour .I want to run away from everything and everyone. And the best part is being with Students is the best therapy every .they are so in sync with you ..they'll always pull u out
  • ChaoticTeacher May 15 @ 9:15 PM EDT
A2: There are two types 1: Teachers who constantly spread negativity about the school and/or the students. and 2: Teachers who completely isolate themselves from their peers. Both can be very damaging. #personalizedpd
  • tracyscottkelly May 15 @ 9:16 PM EDT
    Welcome @KammasKersch #personalizedPD
  • mr_hayes May 15 @ 9:16 PM EDT
Lack of empathy is the worst! Have to care about kids. #personalizedPD
  • mr_hayes May 15 @ 9:17 PM EDT
Being around Ss is a great therapy. You have to love the kids that know we are not doing well and try to encourage us. #personalizedPD

Q3: What comes to your mind when you think of self-care? #personalizedPD
  • tracyscottkelly May 15 @ 9:27 PM EDT
A3) Self care are those things that we should do to live a full and fulfilling life. Hobbies, relaxation, etc. #personalizedPD

  • mr_hayes May 15 @ 9:28 PM EDT
    self-care #personalizedPD
  • DanKos3 May 15 @ 9:28 PM EDT
Taking time for yourself. Do things you like to do to to recharge the batteries. #personalizedPD
  • KammasKersch May 15 @ 9:28 PM EDT
A3: Exercise and time management! You need separation of work and personal time. I do my best to do school work at school and enjoy my home time. Sometimes I bring things home, but I try. #PersonalizedPD
  • sew1080 May 15 @ 9:28 PM EDT

Q4: If you could, what would you change about the ways schools are run to help prevent teachers from experiencing fatigue or burnout? #personalizedPD
  • ChaoticTeacher May 15 @ 9:29 PM EDT
A3: Oh Wow @mr_hayes! I think of the spa treatment! :D But most importantly, I think that self Mental care is so very important. We need to make sure that the daily grind doesn't wear us down mentally so that we disconnect with Ss and peers. #personalizedpd

A3 Lots of teachers (especially ones who participate in twitter chats!) are so dedicated to their professions that they forget to take time for themselves! There truly must be a balance! #personalizedPD
  • KammasKersch May 15 @ 9:30 PM EDT
A4: Hmm, I would provide more time for teachers to work together, more input from teachers on what they need to be successful in the classroom, and programs to support teachers to prevent burnout #personalizedPD
  • ccormier_edu May 15 @ 9:30 PM EDT
A3: Teachers’ self care needs to be prioritized and focused on by administrators! Providing time and space for regular self reflection/care says we value YOU. As in you the person, not just you the teacher. #PersonalizedPD
  • jbretzmann - Moderator May 15 @ 9:30 PM EDT
A3: Self-care = summer. Learn & 'do' at my own pace (and on the patio) #patioPD #personalizedPD

  • sew1080 May 15 @ 9:31 PM EDT
A4 Admin that are positive and supportive are crucial. I would want to know I could go to them with anything and they would have my back. Unrushed collaboration with other Ts is vital too! #personalizedPD
  • tracyscottkelly May 15 @ 9:31 PM EDT
A4) First, not assign homework. As a school leader, do more to keep staff interested, even excited a little. Too much excitement too often is too much. Reduce the number of hoops they have to jump through. #personalizedPD

A4. At HS we teach the same subjects almost every year. Change up the courses taugh (licensing permitting). I got to tech chem for the first time since student teaching 14 years ago. I have felt more invigorated this year than ever. #PersonalizedPD

Q4: If you could, what would you change about the ways schools are run to help prevent teachers from experiencing fatigue or burnout? #personalizedPD
  • ChaoticTeacher May 15 @ 9:33 PM EDT
A4: I've taught in two different districts. In both districts the teachers were more like independent contractors as opposed to a team. Somehow we need to cultivate that collaborative effort. After all, we are all in the same boat here. #personalizedpd
  • Rdene915 May 15 @ 9:34 PM EDT
A4 I think something with the scheduling, like an early release day for Ts to do own PD, collab, have heard of other schools doing this #personalizedPD
    In reply to @mr_hayes
  • jbretzmann - Moderator May 15 @ 9:34 PM EDT
