#personalizedPD chat. A fast-paced, fun chat to discuss personalized professional development for educators. We discuss what it is, why it's better than traditional PD, how to create personalized PD opportunities, how to scale it from individuals to districts, and how to inspire it from individuals to districts to want more and more of it. Hosted each week by Jason Bretzmann @jbretzmann and Kenny Bosch @KennyBosch and moderated each week by a guest moderator. 8pm Central each Tuesday.
Thank you for joining us tonight for #personalizedPD
Oi! (Portuguese) Hello!
Please welcome our guest moderator, Eric Hayes @mr_hayes from Brazil!
Thank you for leading the #personalizedPD chat!
Welcome to the #personalizedPD chat. I will be your moderator tonight. As a reminder please start off your answers with A1, A2, A3—corresponding to the question and don't forget the hashtag.
Hello! I am Kenny Bosch, co-host and co-author of the #personalizedPD book and chat. https://t.co/UKHXahPlrl
Thank you for joining us tonight.
Take a minute and invite some friends to join us.
To get this party started, please introduce yourself and pick a gif that describes how you are feeling as the school year comes to an end. #PersonalizedPD
#personalizedPD hi everyone I am Aprajita Ralli from India.i teach history ,individuals and Societies for the Middle years program ( grades 6-10). Am on top of it all ...Finally !! We are still going through our year end exams... but the feeling's on :-)
A1 Going back to my GIF, test prep. If we were able to teach standards to mastery and go deep instead of a mile wide, test prep wouldn't be so crucial. #personalizedPD
A1: Naysayers are draining. Those that feel the need to buzzkill and passion squash.
I try to counteract them with reminder quotes/stories planted in my bag, office, car and with a “go to” PLN that builds me up! #personalizedPD
Exactly was going to say the very same thing.#personalizedPD A1. Peers looking for attention ,leaders throwing their weight, asking students to reflect but they themselves unawares of the havoc they wreak in the atmosphere...the impact they have & they are so blissfully ignorant

A2 Negativity. Constant negativity. They no longer see the point in putting in the work and trying new things when something doesn't go well the first time. #personalizedPD
A1: Apathy! I think apathy is more of the most draining parts of teaching. I want to connect and inspire my students to grow, but sometimes the yearn to learn isn't there for my high schoolers #personalizedPd
#personalizedPD A2. Frustration and irritability. I get stressed and it shows on my face and my behaviour .I want to run away from everything and everyone. And the best part is being with Students is the best therapy every .they are so in sync with you ..they'll always pull u out
A2: There are two types 1: Teachers who constantly spread negativity about the school and/or the students. and 2: Teachers who completely isolate themselves from their peers. Both can be very damaging. #personalizedpd

⚠️ A2: Disinterest in growing professionally. When you don't think you can improve anymore, you can't because you have put up a road block for yourself. #personalizedPD

A2: A reminder to look at the root of people’s actions/reactions- to try to empathize with others’ head space. Grouchiness & irritability can be a sign of greater concern like fatigue/burnout #personalizedPD

A3: Exercise and time management! You need separation of work and personal time. I do my best to do school work at school and enjoy my home time. Sometimes I bring things home, but I try. #PersonalizedPD
A3: Oh Wow @mr_hayes! I think of the spa treatment! :D But most importantly, I think that self Mental care is so very important. We need to make sure that the daily grind doesn't wear us down mentally so that we disconnect with Ss and peers. #personalizedpd
It's time for the #Lurker shout out!
We love our lurkers at #personalizedPD
Lurkers, lurkers near and far. Come out, come out wherever you are! We would love to hear your thoughts. Join in, or not, it's cool.
A3 Lots of teachers (especially ones who participate in twitter chats!) are so dedicated to their professions that they forget to take time for themselves! There truly must be a balance! #personalizedPD
A4: Hmm, I would provide more time for teachers to work together, more input from teachers on what they need to be successful in the classroom, and programs to support teachers to prevent burnout #personalizedPD
A3: Teachers’ self care needs to be prioritized and focused on by administrators! Providing time and space for regular self reflection/care says we value YOU. As in you the person, not just you the teacher.
#PersonalizedPD
A4 Admin that are positive and supportive are crucial. I would want to know I could go to them with anything and they would have my back. Unrushed collaboration with other Ts is vital too! #personalizedPD
A4) First, not assign homework. As a school leader, do more to keep staff interested, even excited a little. Too much excitement too often is too much. Reduce the number of hoops they have to jump through. #personalizedPD

A4. At HS we teach the same subjects almost every year. Change up the courses taugh (licensing permitting). I got to tech chem for the first time since student teaching 14 years ago. I have felt more invigorated this year than ever. #PersonalizedPD
A4: I've taught in two different districts. In both districts the teachers were more like independent contractors as opposed to a team. Somehow we need to cultivate that collaborative effort. After all, we are all in the same boat here. #personalizedpd
A4 I think something with the scheduling, like an early release day for Ts to do own PD, collab, have heard of other schools doing this #personalizedPD

A.4
Value teacher time as much as student, parent and admin time is valued.
Stop dragging me into meetings that could have been an email.
#personalizedPD
When I am focused on turning my instructional weaknesses into strengths, it is never-ending. When it turns into a strength, it’s rejuvenating. #personalizedPD
At the end of the year I always try to do something new with at least one course. It helps combat fatigue when the Ss are dreaming of summer. #PersonalizedPD
A5) I have lots of activities outside of my daily teaching. Boys, running, writing a book, writing a dissertation, Twitter, #PatioPD, #coffeeEDU, I am working on my CUE presentations, you know stuff! #personalizedPD
A5: I keep my self-care as a priority. For me that means getting to the gym, meal planning, getting quality time with family and friends who support my career and push me to be better. Sometimes it means taking a nap on the couch after school #personalizedPD
A5: That, my friend, is an excellent question. I balance my teaching, the family business, and my family. I am afraid that I don't do too much to avoid burnout. I've just accepted it as a way of life. But lots of summer camping helps. #personalizedpd
#personalizedPD A4. Individuals choosing their PE would be my definite first step .I'd encourage Ts to spend some quality time with the ones they connect most as well ...we sometimes don't get time during the rush of the day to unwind.
A.4 Teach transferable skills that will allow the current generation to make my life better in the future.
Teaching #LEARNING by the 6C's.
#personalizedPD
#personalizedPD A5. My friends and family are the energizer for me. My weekends are totally dedicated to them. I make it a point to unwind at least one day of the week ...just being myself.
A5: I also reflect on the idea of teacher burn out as this…Do we burn ourselves out OR is our flame being snuffed out by outside factors? I believe there is a difference. -> https://t.co/phmqg3S7Vh#personalizedPD
A5 making time for family, friends, exercise is important, sometimes it is challenging to find that time, but also get recharged by having an awesome PLN, such a supportive group #personalizedPD
A.5 I am the king of ADHD so I am always looking for new labs, activities and projects to synthesize the information in my #flipclass
This keeps things fresh.
I also steal energy from my students.
#personalizedPD
I do as well! Sometimes I feel so lazy, especially when I know I have tons to do, but I need at least 30 min a day, before the 4-5 hours of work at night (work/Twitter chats) :) #personalizedPD

We need to build in time during contractual PD time where we can lean in and listen to one another. This is important for the culture of a building. #personalizedPD
A6) Daily check-ins, or weekly. Sneak off campus for lunch, monthly, bring them coffee and donuts or bagels on occassion, start a book chat, invite them to Twitter, etc. #personalizedPD
A6: Random acts of kinds can lift the spirits of those who need it. Something as simple as a kind word, bringing them some Starbucks as a surprise, or just lending an ear when it is needed. #personalizedpd
A6: The greatest compliment you can give someone is to let them know that you listened. When educators feel heard and valued, their Maslow’s needs are being met. #personalizedPD
A6 try to treat them to random acts of fun, being available to listen, check in, grab coffee, I like to make a @Buncee or other creation to share, like a meme, or GIF #personalizedPD

A6 Presume positive, and ask how you can support (instead of help). I learned that offering help may make people feel belittled, but support means we're in it together. #personalizedPD
A6 The tough conversation needs to be had...sometimes teachers don’t even realize they ARE fatigued. Or if they do, they can’t stop themselves because they are so dedicated. #personalizedPD

A-1:Sometimes it can feel like your spinning your wheels. You know you've taught this concept, and you know the students learned it. However, it does not show up in the assessment. #PersonalizedPD
A6: Consistent compassionate support. They need to know that they are not a "bad teacher" just because the job is emotionally draining on them. Providing tools and listening to them can help them get back on track. #PersonalizedPD

So true. How do we bring this to the person's attention? I remember one year my wife just laid it down on me. Not all people have that. #personalizedPD

A6: I love listening to the stories of educators. Listening and valuing the experiences are so important. Plus it gives us a window into their class or building. If you need more stories check out https://t.co/ONGpV6n6mj#personalizedPD
#personalizedPD A6 a listening ear is what is always in demand...but sometimes listening in too much can also be seen as interference.everyones an adult ...we need to let people be sometimes.

I think it begins by asking probing questions. It’s not our realization to be had, but theirs.. yet we owe it to our students to NOT ignore it #personalizedPD
I hear you. That is why it is so important that we remind ourselves we can't help others if we have runned down our battery. Got to keep charged. #personalizedPD
You cannot let the "I have the Red folder on Monday, Blue folder on Tuesday.... work crew who have always done it that way. Temper your enthusiasm for #LEARNING.
#personalizedPD
A4: I miss individualism. I understand that we need to teach to the standards. But, a program that works for one teacher's class may not work in every class. It's great to share best practices. But it should also be okay to let me go my own way. #PersonalizedPD
