Let's get started ... Q1 coming up!
#iolchat
IOLblog
Mar 2 @ 12:08 PM EST
Q1) Why are grades part of college courses? What is the goal?
#iolchat
Elijah_Gersims
Mar 2 @ 12:11 PM EST
A1) From a current S, it's something that is used to make us aware of our standing in the course and check our understanding.
#IOLchat
IOLblog
Mar 2 @ 12:11 PM EST
A1) I know they can be motivators for my students! Though there are pros and cons to that.

A1) As a student (web person speaking here) I always felt they were a reflection of how well I understood the material

@Elijah_Gersims
Great to have the Ss perspective! Absolutely - how are you doing? Grades can convey this.
#iolchat
Elijah_Gersims
Mar 2 @ 12:13 PM EST
@IOLblog
True! It can also make me focus on getting a better grade rather than focus on learning!

Yes! Helpful word choice - grades 'reflect' your understanding, effort, participation...

Most uf us have chased the "A" at some point with little to really show for it after the fact.

Mar 2 @ 12:21 PM EST
A2) It's important to know the distinction between formative and summative assessments and when to grade them or not.
#IOLchat
Elijah_Gersims
Mar 2 @ 12:23 PM EST
A2) cont. In other words, it's important to know the right situations to apply grading to your assessments!

Definitely a quiz, exam, or paper, but group projects, speeches, and homework can be tricky unless there's a good rubric.
#IOLchat
IOLblog
Mar 2 @ 12:27 PM EST
@Elijah_Gersims
Quizzes and exams, absolutely! Most are set up to evaluate knowledge and grades are automated.

Course grades are (imperfect) signals to external audiences (employers, schools, scholarships)

Thanks, this is what I was looking at but haven't clicked the link yet.

Mar 2 @ 12:34 PM EST
A3) Not really sure as a S, but I do know that point values have to be well defined and properly weighted in the rubric!
#IOLchat
IOLblog
Mar 2 @ 12:36 PM EST
A3) I tend to use rubrics for more complex assignments, and those w/more weight in the class.
#iolchat
IOLblog
Mar 2 @ 12:36 PM EST
@Elijah_Gersims
Weighting and criteria are important, and can be tricky to sort out.
#iolchat
IOLblog
Mar 2 @ 12:37 PM EST
@Elijah_Gersims
Do you appreciate having access to grading rubrics as a student?
#iolchat
Elijah_Gersims
Mar 2 @ 12:37 PM EST
@IOLblog
That's a good way to do it! How would that work out in a theoretical situation, out of curiosity?
#IOLchat
Elijah_Gersims
Mar 2 @ 12:38 PM EST
@IOLblog
Oh definitely! It's really helpful to know how to get on the same page with the Teacher!
#IOLchat
IOLblog
Mar 2 @ 12:39 PM EST
@Elijah_Gersims
The larger assignments have more of the final grade at stake, so rubric can share my expectations w/more detail.

Oh definitely! It's really helpful to know how to get on the same page with the Teacher!
#IOLchat
Elijah_Gersims
Mar 2 @ 12:40 PM EST
@IOLblog
That makes sense! Yeah, it definitely helps me as a student to know the teacher's expectations!
#IOLchat
IOLblog
Mar 2 @ 12:41 PM EST
@Elijah_Gersims
So, other assignments may have some point value, but small, and be treated as more pass/fail, complete/incomplete
#IOLchat
IOLblog
Mar 2 @ 12:42 PM EST
Q4) What are students' primary complaints about grading and assessment?
#iolchat
Elijah_Gersims
Mar 2 @ 12:42 PM EST
@IOLblog
Gotcha. And it would make sense that those wouldn't really have a rubric, they're more "in-class" work and small homework?
#IOLchat
IOLblog
Mar 2 @ 12:44 PM EST
@Elijah_Gersims
Right - activities that require participation/interaction, preliminary drafts, etc.
#IOLchat
Elijah_Gersims
Mar 2 @ 12:44 PM EST
A4) My biggest frustration is when I'm not necessarily sure what the T requires because there isn't a rubric or it's not specific.
#IOLchat
IOLblog
Mar 2 @ 12:47 PM EST
@Elijah_Gersims
Great point. I think the increased use of rubrics has definitely helped Teachers get more detailed ....
#IOLchat
IOLblog
Mar 2 @ 12:48 PM EST
@Elijah_Gersims
Assignment instructions/directions can be vague. Sometimes that's the design, but helps all to understand that.
#IOLchat
Elijah_Gersims
Mar 2 @ 12:50 PM EST
@IOLblog
That makes sense! I meant specifically for the ones that require explanation, but I agree that some should be vague!
#IOLchat
IOLblog
Mar 2 @ 12:51 PM EST
@Elijah_Gersims
Exactly! And it doesn't hurt to clarify that something is more open ended right from the start.
#iolchat
IOLblog
Mar 2 @ 12:51 PM EST
Time for our last Q ... coming up...!
#iolchat
Elijah_Gersims
Mar 2 @ 12:52 PM EST
@IOLblog
Definitely! I need to make sure I remember that for the future!
#IOLchat
IOLblog
Mar 2 @ 12:53 PM EST
Q5) There is a "no grades" movement in education. Would you prefer to abandon grading if you could? But keeping feedback, of course
#iolchat
Elijah_Gersims
Mar 2 @ 12:55 PM EST
A5) Like in A1, I think grades are designed for the Ss and Ts to be aware of standing in the class, so I think maybe there should
#IOLchat
Elijah_Gersims
Mar 2 @ 12:55 PM EST
A5) cont. be less focus, but thwey shouldn't be abolished!
#IOLchat
IOLblog
Mar 2 @ 12:57 PM EST
@Elijah_Gersims
That's helpful insight!
#IOLchat
I think we are a long way from "no grades" at college level, but it's intriguing.
Elijah_Gersims
Mar 2 @ 12:58 PM EST
@IOLblog
Yeah, definitely! But yeah, I think there can be too much focus on grades and too little on learning, but it isnecessary.
#IOLchat
IOLblog
Mar 2 @ 12:58 PM EST
@Elijah_Gersims
Alternative assessments/no grading may be appropriate in some courses but not all. Keep lrng objectives in mind!
