Good morning, Doug! I'm an instructional coach from West Jordan, Utah. Always a pleasure to learn with/from you. :) Any tidbit of advice as I take on this new position?
Not sure if #leadupchat is this morning bc of holiday.

Hi there - happy to help. I think itās essential to define what ācoachingā is - not therapy, not management - but reflection to support individual and school performance. Happy to talk off line. Iāve also written extensively on coaching.
Get ready for a Labor Day Cookout on #LeadLAP this morning at 9:30 CST/10:30 EST. Weāll be talking about our job and our passions. Come join me for some Dogs and Burgers. #tlap#satchat#Leadupchat

The more I've made a shift to focusing on student learning the more satisfaction I've had as a teacher and the more I've seen my students really grow. #leadupchat
Neesonās landmark article for ASCD nails the homework issue - synthesis of 37 studies says the impact K-5 is zero. Impact 6-12 is minimal. Why do we persist in doing ineffective practices?

Why do teachers assign homework? āBecause the students need practice.ā OK - then what are the hallmarks of effective practice? Feedback, coaching, differentiation. Does that EVER happen with homework?

Look at last semesterās AP scores - find the students who earned 4ās and 5ās on the AP exam, but received a C or D in the class due to missing homework. That proves that the homework was irrelevant.

Look at the students in AP who earned 1ās and 2ās on the AP exam - the lowest scores, but received Aās and Bās in the class - that proves that compliance with homework was irrelevant to meaningful performance.

2) Math Ts were inspired by Andrew Bernett's work and made changes to hw & assessment. They were nervous, but it went so well that the entire Math & Science departments are doing it this year

1) I was subbing for an LA T for 4.5 months & dying under the weight of 2 full time jobs (admin as well) Did research & decided to flip my feedback so that Ss did the work, not me. The result was incredible https://t.co/ZfwVaEayY5ā¦

Some just can't let go of what teachers "have always done." Some parents judge teacher quality by how much homework students are given. Ppl are sometimes suspicious of research. Some ppl are not informed. As educators, we need to read/ keep up w the latest research. #leadupchat

We do most of the work in class - now called 'larning opportunities" not classwork. The focus has changed - can do it if you need practice, can skip it if you want. Most Ss do it & will continue at home if they need to. #leadupchat
Yes, sometimes we're so focused on moving teachers and students forward that we leave parents out of the loop. They need the information about the latest research as well. We all need to understand the WHY of what we do- get on the same page. #leadupchat
#leadupchat was on a break because of the holiday BUT @DouglasReeves started a wonderful conversation We are so lucky to be able to learn from his expertise!
Thatās fantastic, Sandy. It must have been powerful for the Ss in the sense that they worry less about the test and concentrate more of learning & the reflection of what they learn #leadupchat
What a thoughtful point! Grading and homework are emotional because any change represents a loss - a loss of tradition, personal experience, and confidence. āIf it worked for me, why doesnāt it work for others?"
#leadupchathttps://t.co/9td2zVw02X
We must ask ourselves, āWhat percentage of our students will become public school educators?ā If the answer is south of 100%, then we should ask why our students will have the same motivations that we did.

Yes! I started to make the biggest shifts some time ago (decade?) -hard to believe
But, it started with experimenting and really listening to my students. They motivated me to make more shifts. :) #leadupchat
Thatās wonderful. Many districts are incorporate Parent Camps too. Itās definitely important to provide the opportunity for P voice. Iād love to try using @Flipgrid with parents. #leadupchat

Best. Doug
My challenge this year is I moved from first grade to fifth and grading. I am looking at a lot more grading with 90 students, and I want to make sure I am able to give them the feedback they need to improve. #leadupchat
Teachersāyour job is the hardest job I know of. Iām inspired by your dedication & honored to serve students alongside you.
Thank you for all you do. It is most definitely a gift.
Have an amazing school year!
