Tim Bedley. 5th grade T in SoCal. GSPD Founder. I give my students unstructured outdoor play for 10 mins every hour. Unstructured play is essential for child development! #cuechat
Hey #CUEchat! Let's Play! My name is Scott Bedley and I'm a 4/5 combo teaching at Eastwood Elementary School in Irvine. I'm a Co-Founder of Global School Play Day #GSPD2019
Hi #cuechat -ters! April, 2/3 T from SoCal. We work in centers a lot and I try to integrate games in. We also try to work structured games into our PE time. :)
A1 - Unstructured play is child self-directed without adults makng the choices or plans in the play. It's not field days that are designed by adults. Nothing wrong with those... but unstructured play is about the kids leading... It's not unsupervised though... #CUEchat#GSPD2019
Meghan here from Nor Cal. I try and give my kids time during the day to use as they want. They do all sorts of things from build things from paper to Legos. #CUEchat
I’m Ellen fron SF Bay Area. Just led a session at #designcamp on nurturing innovative/designthinking mindsets through play and improv. I include play daily build/nurture mindsets, creativity, & SEL. #cuechat#dtk12chat
A1: Letting kids take the lead and play whatever they want, any way they want... while I try to stay out of their way. I'm a fan of #GSPD2019 since introduced to it last year. #cuechat
A2 - Unstructured play helps children develope empathy, creativity, imagination, self-confidence, collaboration, problem solving, fitness, stress releif and more... I think us adults need more play too! #CUEchat#GSPD2019
A2: There are far too many to list! One of my faves is that students need to learn to get unbored. This doesn't happen with technology. Kids need the opportunity to create their own engagement opps. #cuechat
#cuechat Heather Hilz Fitzgerald - I try to make most learning experiences as interactive and real world connected... even try to heighten the way I present... but I could always learn more ways!
I appreciate the benefits of children solving their own problems and developing their communication skills with peers during unstructured play. #CUEchat
The reflection piece is so key & to be able to refer back to learnings that happened during unstructured, student led play will be key because it comes from the Ss themselves. #cuechat
A2: How to get along with others! Solve their own problems! Learn to deal with conflicts. They also make friends who share common interests. Builds community. #cuechat
A2: Unstructured play evens out the traditional academic environment. Everyone can win. Everyone is “good.” Everyone can grow. My heart is so full!!! #GSPD2019#cuechat
A1) #CUEchat unconstructed play would be giving kids the oppprtunity yo dive into any type of playing that would involve imagination, games, and creativity. Whether it’s a group, individual, and or duo type of play. Whatever makes them happy! #play
Q3: #GSPD2019 is one day dedicated to valueing unstructured play as a learning strategy. How should we respond to admin and parents who complain about “wasting” a day on GSPD? #cuechat@Scotteach@CateTolnai
It does look like a hot mess at times! I saw a bunch of kids start a game of nation/dodge ball in the classroom with a pile of stuffed animals. I wanted to intervene, but stopped myself. No one was going to get hurt, so I let it go on. And I watched and laughed! #cuechat
A2) #CUEchat#GSPD2019 well the 4 C’s of Education of course!!! Social skills, cooperation, imagination, physical activity, problem solving... I could go on and on!!!
It's not just in understanding the mental and physical benefits associated with play…it's also in understanding the far-reaching negative effects that are associated with play deprivation. #cuechat
You’re a rockstar. So often our first inclination is to say “no”. I’m working really hard to say “yes” as much as possible to my students this year. 😊 #CUEchat
School is a place where kids get introduced to valuable experiences that they wouldn't get on their own initiative. #GSPD2019 reintroduces kids to the joy of play. How is that a waste of time? It can change their lives! #cuechat
Q3: #GSPD2019 is one day dedicated to valueing unstructured play as a learning strategy. How should we respond to admin and parents who complain about “wasting” a day on GSPD? #cuechat@Scotteach@CateTolnai
A3 - First, there are people who see play as not worthy of instructional minutes... #GSPD2019 is for them.We need that mindset to start to question and seek out answers and research like this TEDx from Dr. Peter Gray and discovery it's importance https://t.co/a0fldrpXcP#CUEchat

It is very easy 2 get caught up w/all the other things that go on in a schoolday. Whether it’s a play day or a “regular” day, bit pausing 2 notice & reflect is where the learning & growing happens. I added reflect to my #designthinking model so it wouldn’t get left out. #cuechat
A3. It's not play, it is learning! My feeling is I learn a lot by playing
gaining a sense of individual ownership instead just going step by step. #cuechat
Q3: #GSPD2019 is one day dedicated to valueing unstructured play as a learning strategy. How should we respond to admin and parents who complain about “wasting” a day on GSPD? #cuechat@Scotteach@CateTolnai
A3) #CUEchat#GSPD2019 I’m a big advocate to nontraditional means of providing educational experiences with students... before we can expect kids to learn, they have to feel safe, be content, and able to take chances, the result inquisitive engaged learners! #throughplay
When kids only have 20 minutes or so for recess at school, they never get into the play zone. They need lengthy periods of time to truly get into the flow, to get bored and then have to deal with that boredom. #PlayAllDay#GSPD2019#CUEchat
Q3: #GSPD2019 is one day dedicated to valueing unstructured play as a learning strategy. How should we respond to admin and parents who complain about “wasting” a day on GSPD? #cuechat@Scotteach@CateTolnai
When you help others understand the enormous benefits of taking a small fraction of instructional time from the school year to develop these life long skills, it doesn’t seem like “wasted” time. #CUEchat#GSPD2019

A3: luckily my awesome admin @jeffreykubiak is super supportive, and I think Ts need to share the great things that happen during play with parents. #CUEchat
Hello #cuechat. I'm Eric Calderon from Fresno. My team and I will have our classes take part in #GSPD2019 by hosting various fun play activities in our classrooms. Ss would rotate into arts and crafts, tech games, board games, legos, sensory sand, movies, playdoh & outdoor play.
A3 -We need people to start to see the connection between lack of unstructured play time & the increase of mental health & physical health issues in kids... anxiety, stress, incresed sucide rates at a younger & younger age... educators are seeing it first hand #CUEchat#GSPD2019
Every learning opportunity is valuable. Those experiences that engage multiple facets of ourselves are often the most impactful. Play can engage our emotional, physical, auditory, visual and interpersonal facets. Hardly a waste! #cuechat
Have you seen the children's book. Let's Do Nothing? My colleague and friend @JamisonLuke shared it with me and it's super fun to read. Turns out you are always doing something when you use your imagination - even when you think you are doing nothing! #cuechat
#CUEchat providing students choices and modeling how there are different types of play... active and loud play, as well as calm and reflective play! #playforall
A1: ss can lean social skills, teamwork, problem solving, cooperative play, self control, self management, decision making, and so much more! #cuechat#GSPD2019
There are so many ways to include play (both structured/facilitated/guided & not, everyday in the classroom. I sometimes feel like after NCLB Ts need to be given permission to put okay back in the classroom. #cuechat
A1: ss can lean social skills, teamwork, problem solving, cooperative play, self control, self management, decision making, and so much more! #cuechat#GSPD2019
A4- I love this question! I wish kids rode bikes and organized sports type games. Some kids still play sports, but there is always an adult organizing and solving problems. #GSPD2019#CUEchat
It's nice when you have your whole school on board. Makes it easy to enjoy the fun, too! I'm lucky to work at a school where all agree #GSPD2019 is what is best for kids. #cuechat
A4- Everything from creating our own carnival in our backyard to exploring in the dirt fields... We played a lot with Star Wars figures... and we didn't want to stop untill our parents came looking for us... and then we played some more... #CUEchat#GSPD2019
A4: I used to build all sorts of cool little houses and stuff from cardboard and recycled stuff. So many kids tell me they have never done that! #CUEchat
Hi from Connecticut. Being outside more, on their own. Also, my brother and I did so much storytelling play, with Matchbox cars, with rocks at a beach... I’m seeing less create-your-own play. #cuechat A4
There seemed to be more space for tinkering and exploring. There seemed to be more mental and physical garages for discovery to occur. In many ways, it felt as if there was more space for curiosity, imagination and wonder to roam free. Answers weren’t at our fingertips. #cuechat
Q3: #GSPD2019 is one day dedicated to valueing unstructured play as a learning strategy. How should we respond to admin and parents who complain about “wasting” a day on GSPD? #cuechat@Scotteach@CateTolnai
A4. My play was building things to play with. Taking my roller skates and old wooden milk crates making skateboards. Play can be used to create vs. consume. #cuechat
Kiddos don’t play cards, checkers, monopoly or go outside and get dirty! #numbersense is a prerequisite for many games they don’t play. Many kiddos don’t even play video games; they watch others on YouTube do it for them. 🧐🤨 #cuechat
Oh it was hard to say "yes". I tend to try to control so much sometimes... but I had to just relax, breathe, and believe that it was ok. And it was. 😉#cuechat
A4: I listened (& danced) to records (shout out to #mousercise), roller skated in my backyard, designed stickers in my “sticker factory,” played “store” and spent most of the time deciding how much each toy/book cost, & read a TON of #babysittersclubbooks#cuechat#GSPD2019
A4- Everything from creating our own carnival in our backyard to exploring in the dirt fields... We played a lot with Star Wars figures... and we didn't want to stop untill our parents came looking for us... and then we played some more... #CUEchat#GSPD2019

A4: Growing up as an only child, I used my imagination a lot! I had tea parties with my stuffed animals. I pretended to be Belle from Beauty and the Beast. My poor dad played a supporting role as the bookshop owner. #cuechat
It is so sad that kids don't get enough play at home sometimes... kids are overscheduled with homework, extra classes, etc. And that makes it so much more important that they play at school. #cuechat

A4) Nerd Alert...I loved reading and drawing. I joke that in all my college years I didn't get to choose a book that I wanted to read until my doctorate. I wish kids had the choice to choose more of what they read and learn about. I wish kids had more art #cuechat
I’m an old fart that built skateboards w/wooden planks & steel wheels-I still enjoy taking a Ss board & riding it down the walkway & then handing the board back to the S & telling them when they become the Prin, then they can ride the board as much as they like at school #cuechat
A4. My play was building things to play with. Taking my roller skates and old wooden milk crates making skateboards. Play can be used to create vs. consume. #cuechat
I’m so pleased that Amazon Prime has the Mister Tigers series. It is great to be able to share it with my children and revisit it myself. #cuechat#socialemotionalhealth#KidsDeserveIt

A5: For kids and adults alike. Play means we’re awake to the world around us...the beauty and, yes, sometimes the danger! (Sorry couldn’t pick just one) #cuechat#GSPD2019#ropescourse
That’s what I’m talking about! If I had #mouseercise on YouTube I don’t think I would have developed so many super cool dance moves!! I would have been trying to copy them… Hmmmmmmmm Interesting thought… #cuechat#GSPD2019
A4: Ride bikes, overturn the backstop in the school field behind our house and use it for a fortress, find frogs in the garden, use our imagination. Are the street lights on yet??? #cuechat
A3: there are traditional & nontraditional ways to learning. Through play, Ss who don't fit traditional learning may shine. As Educators, we have to continually evolve, this is no different. Ss acquire skills & activate areas of the brain previously unnoticed. #cuechat#GSPD2019

A5) Does a picture of us at the @museumofplay count? (Who’s tallest?) When the whole family can all go to the same place and have an equal amount of fun... that says something about the magic of play. #cuechat#GSPD2019

#CUEchat Don't forget to Register Your Support and class/school/district to participate in the grassroots effor to bring play back to this generation. Over 300,000 students from 60+ nations are set to play! https://t.co/be4kNU1U3B#GSPD2019
That’s why we built the large checker board....kids are drawn to it...this evening, I sheepishly had to ask the kids if the rides were coming since it was getting dark and I needed to head out #CUEchat

This is so awesome! So happy we connected at #designcamp I like how we both took different paths to making play a priority in schools! #primusandplay#cuechat

The government of Singapore launched its SkillsFuture program for all citizens in 2016 to take time out of play with digital skills. They are onto something! #cuechat
Be direct. Ask Ss to go home and play outside. Let kids share verbally in class about what they did to play the day before. More brain breaks! #CUEchat
A6 - After participating in #GSPD2019 you wont be able or satisfied without play in your classroom... Let's make the whole world aware of the importance of unstructured play time for kids! #CUEchat
A4: Ride bikes, overturn the backstop in the school field behind our house and use it for a fortress, find frogs in the garden, use our imagination. Are the street lights on yet??? #cuechat
In a world that is being increasingly automated and infused with artificial intelligence…creativity, innovation, and those skills that are innately human are becoming more and more important to future success. Skills that are often developed and expanded through play. #cuechat
A4: I played school; mimicked teachers in my life. I drew. I ran around & did tons of relays & obstacle courses. I built things, w/ whatever I was given. I told stories, that were made up. I helped others. Through play, I figured out what I needed as a learner. #cuechat#GSPD2019
A6) Firm believer this is an issue of access to tools and instruction for Ss of all levels. In the past I trained Ss in 3D, VR, etc. and then let them run free. I believe it made me a better teacher and the Ss grew. If you can't start with it, you can build to it #cuechat
A6: We need to set the time aside more than just Fun Friday. It needs to be part of classroom pedegogy. If it isn't embedded into the culture, it's hard to find the time. #CUEchat
A6: Take your staff PD outside and the adults who don’t already will get why it’s no fun sitting down all day indoors getting talked at!! https://t.co/2puIh7dE27#cuechat#gspd2019
A6) #CUEchat Letting kids know that #play is welcomed... creating a positive vibe around play... designing learning experiences around play and weave academic standards through play!!! #easypeasy#GSPD2019
A4: As a kid, I did tons of imaginative play by myself and with friends. I wish kids did more of this because imagination helps foster critical thinking &problem solving. So many times I pretending I was @jcorippo sacking bursting through the line to sack Kevin Sweeney. #cuechat
A5: my amazing colleague and fellow SDC teacher @kerry223022 has this wonderful example of learning through play. Her Ss shared what they learned about a main character using playdoh. #cuechat#GSPD2019
A6: Play is an important way to build & nurture mindsets, skills, & creativite confidence needed in design thinking, innovation, & many jobs our Ss will have. I think a lot of it is also about this mindset shift in Ts. #cuechat
#CUEchat Don't forget to Register Your Support and class/school/district to participate in the grassroots effor to bring play back to this generation. Over 300,000 students from 60+ nations are set to play! https://t.co/be4kNU1U3B#GSPD2019
A6: Making it part of the regular routine in our classroom. Take the students out for more than just recess time. Have some unstructured play time in the classroom.#cuechat
A6- Elementary school teachers can encourage more play by assigning less homework. Here's a list of things kids can do besides traditional homework. Most of them are "play." https://t.co/jzY2fLpIpw#CUEchat
I think I’m too old for sticker factory but I had a sticker book for all my Lisa Frank stickers. Puffy stickers and the metallic rainbowy ones were my favorites! And, I went roller skating on Sunday. I must say... I still have some mad skating skills! 😂 #cuechat

A6: offer Ss choices in their learning. You have to personalize it and make it part of your classroom culture. We do this at my site through a personalized learning, blended learning and learning playlist approach. Student voice, student choice. #cuechat#GSPD2019
