#worldgeochat is a weekly chat focused on teaching geography and global studies. Chats vary between geography specific topics as well as general teaching and education topics. ALL are welcome in worldgeochat!
Hi All! Excited to be joining you on our official launch/release of our book! Currently at an airport...only fitting for a #worldgeochat Can anyone guess where Kim is? :)
Ordered my copy of Bring the World to Your Classroom today https://t.co/7U4QFyAi0G. Looking forward to this hour’s #worldgeochat hosted by the Authors. Austin, Tx HS social studies teacher.
Kim here! Former educator turned trainer/consultant for PD centered around Ed Tech, etc. And now author! From the SF Bay Area but usually found in airports and on planes :) #worldgeochat
A1: The new geo tool that I have used this year is Google Tour Builder. For our migration unit students found a text about a refugees journey and created a Google Tour Builder documenting their ordeal. #worldgeochat
A1 I have also used Google Street & Google Earth more than ever before! I usually start our study of a region with having students examine the locale at street level. #worldgeochat
A1: I’m also fortunate that our building has a class set of Google Expedition tools that I can take students on tours of the topics we have covered. #worldgeochat
A1 We're happy with the way this map turned out, and that it's being used by geography, English, and Classics educators. #worldgeochathttps://t.co/RqTeqCC6og
A1 I love to have students make their own tours or collect locations using the URLs from google maps using Streetview. They always love showing off their findings! #worldgeochat
#worldgeochat A1 We have done numerous mystery hangouts/Skypes with our Ss. We have been to Russia, Canada, Sweden, Israel and France this school year. Going to Denmark on Friday. Great way to learn geography skills and share culture.
A1: Wow. Where to begin? Recently I've done a scavenger hunt throughout East Asia w/ https://t.co/YzI6vgUGB1 (powered by @geteach and google maps). Not just "find Beijing," but "find someone eating noodles in Beijing." So fun. #worldgeochat
A1: We use Google Maps a ton & walk around places all over the planet. It's so simple, but can teach students so much about a world they haven't seen. #worldgeochat

a1: If you haven't used https://t.co/K3CIEV97V2 with your students you are missing out on one of the best resources for #geography teachers anywhere on the interwebs. @geteach is a MUST FOLLOW for all #worldgeochat'rs
No doubt Jeff! Now that we are 1 to 1 it is so nice to be able to send students to Google Earth and Streetview to explore the locations we are studying! #worldgeochat
#worldgeochat A1 One of the greatest experience this year. We shared the Pledge of Allegiance and our friends from Israel shared their National Anthem!
A1: I have in the past had students link their current events to the places in the world they are reading about in the news and have them track themes #worldgeochat
A1: All the amazing things I'm reading are giving me ideas about how we can plot the impacts of global warming for the Spellman Clean Tech challenge our 9th gr Ss @excelsior_ptech are doing #worldgeochat
A1 We did a GIS simulation a few months ago--it was a little rough but hoping to try it again soon. Ss saw how useful it was to try out different layers and interpret the info. #worldgeochat
I used to start the kids out in @googleearth with a map of their family tree. build placemarks and paths of different colors representing the different branches of their family #worldgeochat

A2: We have used slides, My Maps, and Tour Builder. Presently my students are creating documentaries about a specific human rights violation that they selected using @WeVideo . #worldgeochat

A2 I’ve used this more in US History, but I really like using iMovie and Explain Everyting for students to tell a story or explain the background of something. This generation seems to be more comfortable on camera and audio, so I try to use that to make advantage. #worldgeochat
Kids really dig into using GE when they get to make the maps 'their own'. A little extra front loading w/UI skills but worth it in the long run... #worldgeochat
A2: Last year when I taught AP world my students created podcasts to discuss issues from around the world They were interested in. We also did a mock UN where they created a ranking system and imposed sanctions 4 human rights violations #worldgeochat
#worldgeochat A2 Love the use of Google Tour Builder. Great way for Ss to put together a story. Also, Google MyMaps. Has a T whose Ss read about Amelia Earhart, then plot the story out on my maps.
A2: New to integrating geo into the ELA classroom, but thinking about how Ss in our global service-learning program can map their learning prior to their summer trip-- could be an alternative to narrative style blogging we usually use
#worldgeochat
Man, @AdobeSpark has been one of my favorite new video/documentary making tools this year! Ss are able to collab on them as well. Not as simple, but can collab using a common class account. #worldgeochat
A2 The Arcade Fire partnered with Google to create an interactive vidoe that adapts to the viewer's zipcode. Students watch and create written narration as it explores their own neighborhoods https://t.co/BxPKaKZ5Eg#worldgeochat
A3: I haven’t had students create screencasts, yet I have used video capture tools such as @Flipgrid and @RecapThat for both formative and summative assessments. In particular to practice claim, evidence, and reasoning. #worldgeochat

A3 they have to narrate (and record) commentary as if they are aliens visiting the Earth. A new lens encourages them to see our planet from a new angle #worldgeochat
a3: Learning how to tilt perspective is of utmost importance. It should NEVER be a journey from the 'top-down' perspective. There is so much more your can experience from shifting the view. #worldgeochathttps://t.co/oIQEAPpQiG
Hello, #worldgeochat - Ladonna from Mobridge, SD joining in a bit late. Q3: I use screencastify, but have never though of them having this done with a Google Earth! Could totally overlay all sorts of Information - GDP, videos, what life is like.
A3 and A2 give students copies of the book "Zoom" and ask them to create their own versions with Google Earth, screen-shotting each new zoom-in #worldgeochat
A3. I'd use tourbuilder as the tour is flows very easily. Navigates from place to place. Practically... Create a script, or at least a plan. Research before recording. Have fun! Share your thinking/observations! #worldgeochat
there is a lot of new things and tips on this #worldgeochat
glad to follow some of the great geography educator and learn meaningful lesson.
Good morning from Malaysia!

A3: we don’t have GE, but I would tell them to start with places that they’ve always wanted to visit and then find interesting geographical features or historical locations in those places. #worldgeochat

A3 I have not thought about using a screencast with any map service yet, but obviously it would be great for tours, regional reports, comparing, or evaluating. #worldgeochat
My favorite is a documentary. I've had it on a few CYOA Menus so far this year. Students love how easy it is. One student used to voiceover journal entries written from perspective of colonists. #worldgeochat
Yep! they love the idea that they're creating a children's book. time permitting, we start to create and add original images for the micro-level #worldgeochat
@AdobeSpark is SO EASY. To me, you just cannot beat... There are other options, but this is by far my personal fave over other similar products. #worldgeochat
tbh, it's frequently a follow-up to the @twilightzone episode "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street". They get to choose if they're reporting back to their home planet or confronting (so to speak) the G7. #worldgeochat
I forget where I heard this... There is a teacher who is creating HYPERMAPS! This is my goal this year. Create a hyperdoc overlayed on a map. Seems like a great opportunity to App Smash! #worldgeochat
A4: Again I haven’t had students create an infographic, yet for a course I took we had to create an infographic on key stats and beliefs of a world religion. #worldgeochat
A2: I let the students tell the story creatively. I like using Genius hour with the various countries and having them make the content memorable creatively...might be a walking tour through major citied or creating dioramas of a countries culture.i let them create #worldgeochat
I've been having them analyze maps / infographics from the #worldgeochat posts - they struggle getting it. Today, used the South of Canada one - let into exploring where Windsor, Canada was for them to understand.
When I taught LA I taught "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" every year! It is such a great story, with a message that unfortunately is timeless. #worldgeochat

A4 I've been on the infographic kick for a long time. I highly suggest https://t.co/ltZI6al80B for students display their knowledge of something, ESPECIALLY data. #worldgeochat
Q4 - my favorite infographic assignment addresses gender statistics in the developing world in comparison to those same statistics in the more developed world. Eyeopening for students #worldgeochat
A4: my students last year when doing our human rights unit researched a country and a specific human rights violation and created infographics to present. They had to include statistics and minimal text. #worldgeochat
A4: I like letting students do Socratic seminars on open ended questions...like our most recent one: Which country in Europe is the most influential? All students found research and they debated points. At the end they made posters showing the facts they presented. #worldgeochat
This is the very best platform @piktochart for students I have found. So easy to use and for a free platform, Ss have so many choices - HIGHLY recommend #worldgeochat

Excited to create a collab Slides doc with Students this week about their favorite places in Central America. A tour of sorts.
Replacing the old traditional pamphlet! #worldgeochat
A5: For us we do a lot with statistics using sites like CIA world Factbook. I need to spend a lot of time going teaching these terms and how to read the data. I need to have my students creating more with the data we analyze. #worldgeochat
My middle school students have struggled with the idea of an infographic... They just have not ended up as I expect. I don't know if they see them as much as you would think. I need to do a better job of teaching and modeling. #worldgeochat
You could take that a step further and have them link their slides in markers in a MyMap. Then you'd have one interactive map with all their slides :) #worldgeochat
A1: My students and I use Drone to survey school landform and use the data to make an analysis and comparison between Google Earth image and Drone image #worldgeochat
A5 In APHuGs, data helps students to understand the difference between LDCs and MDCs. Designing graphics or media that help to understand that data can be very helpful for every learner. #worldgeochat
This is a big issue. I show them some professional ones and some classroom posters here and there as models, nothing too intimidating, to move them beyond just squeezing a bunch of text into a Google Slide #worldgeochat
Some of it was predeveloped through https://t.co/wvMS29iEDI. Otherwise, I have students collect their own data, and then try to find trends, conclusions, etc. #worldgeochat
In other classes (I think yr to yr I change just abt everything), I have asked students to analyze ad sales (journalism), student surveys for publications.... #worldgeochat
I had ss pick a "wonder of South America" and put together a guide, upload to my maps. They selected teachers for me to share with and vote on the place that they wanted to visit. 7th graders were really into it.
#worldgeochat
A5: I think good design can help students visualize and interpret data when focused on one thing. If the design is too elaborate it could be confusing. It’s all about balance #worldgeochat
A6 Ss just finished on where to put a new HMart. Austin just got their first one. Ss again gathered and visualized data to make their prediction. https://t.co/svs20BXC8w#worldgeochat
A6 This entirely innovative lesson from one of our certified educators is a beautiful, profound meditation on "The Bridge to Selma." (Not just for #BHM, either.) Read that student reflection. #worldgeochathttps://t.co/Na81xpx7Xc

A6 Created this GE this weekend. Could not sleep until I finished the 1st draft. Unfortunately, believe I have to add to it tonight. kml file: https://t.co/rPuugV5uTG#worldgeochat
A6. Love this student's screencasted tour of Canada. Her enthusiasm is excellent. I learned to put a length requirement on this type of project next time, but overall - SUPER FUN! https://t.co/HVI3ySLwoY#worldgeochat
TY! I just completed a social justice unit using a @TEDTalks@TED_ED on Global Issues... would love another way to present this information next yr. #worldgeochat
A6: my students want to go visit the countries as we study them...I don't have the money to do that...so...we take virtual tours using street view and transform the classroom authentically for various countries cultural holidays. La dia de los muertos 👇 #worldgeochat
