#LostAtNPS A1: I find MGW's perspective taking model/methods showcased in "Thinking About You, Thinking About Me" to be extremely helpful in helping Ss w lagging skills in development of theory of mind/appreciation of how what they say/do has a boomerang ripple effect.
A In an integrated 1st grade class I use Zones of Regulation that incorporates Social Thinking concepts. Designed to foster skills in self-regulation, including emotional control, sensory regulation and executive functioning. Plan B teaching lagging skills.#LostAtNPS#LostAtNPS
A1: One way is to utilize social stories and situations. Our phenomenal adjustment counselor integrates this into her classroom lessons with students. It's a great way for them to hear and discuss concepts and strategies with excellent guidance. #LostAtNPS

YES!! This system works! It is simple, yet effective and can move from grade to grade with Ss. Continuity of language that grows w Ss is exactly the kind of sustainability we need to support our Ss in the long haul! #LostAtNPS

I think the use of the unthinkables could be helpful for some of our younger kiddos to understand how their behavior is affecting others in a Plan B #LostAtNPS
A1: I can see working with Ss to see if they think their problem is little or big. Maybe putting things into perspective. Over time this might help. #LostAtNPS
A1: I use the Zones of regulations with students as needed - when they enter the classroom then when they leave. It's a good visual for some S's with disabilities #LostAtNPS

A1 #LostAtNPS It helps 2 make the expected behaviors of "being a student" more concrete/less abstract-esp 4 kids on the spectrum. The quote 4 my son in 3rd grade was, "He doesn't know HOW 2 be a student." That was essentially true. Having expected behaviors demonstrated clicked!
A1: I like the expected/unexpected language. I like that it takes away the negative connotation of making a kid feel bad about their behavior. #LostAtNPS

By identifying lagging skills, you know what skills to teach using social thinking. For example, we will use whole body listening to better understand how to interact with others #LostatNPS

Q2:“A picture is worth 1,000 words”. How can we leverage this idea to support Ss w/ lagging skills in processing & communication participate in Plan B. What highly visual, language minimal strategy/tool do U use 2 help Ss express feelings & pinpoint what is hard 4 them?#LostAtNPS
A1 I have worked with Mrs. Packer using the zones with Ss. I think that they are able to understand them and identify their moods. Also big problem/little problem, expected/unexpected #LostAtNPS

#LostAtNPS A2: I find that visuals which identify differentiated levels of emotional feelings connected with how a body feels and tangible strategies to help are extremely effective. Even older students benefit from this visual point and connect the dots expression tool.
Neutralize the language. If we are building lagging skills, we need to make sure expectations are not tied to judgement. Create judgement free space to succeed through challenge and even failure. #LostAtNPS

This is often my advice to my girls too. We talk about what’s bothering them and talk about how to put things in perspective. Parenting skills and teaching skills are often the same. After all our students are our kids too. #LostAtNPS
A2 I think individualized visuals (zones, emotion cards etc) are so helpful but also whole class visuals are so important as visual reminder for all kids.#LostAtNPS
#LostAtNPS A2 Zones uses 4 colors to describe how we feel internally. Blue low state of alertness & energy, green ready to learn happy& content, yellow energy and emotions are up, but still have some control, red very heightened stat of alertness, flight fright.

A2: When I first started teaching APE, I used to use many pictures to help Ss express feelings. In the pool, I'd have ice and penguins for cold or fire and volcano for hot. Bed and Zs for tired. Ss favorite free time activity. The list goes on. Pictures r valuable! #lostatnps
A2 One of my Kinders has a tool that has been in use since preschool in which they point to a face on a chart to indicate to staff how they are feeling, and then they point a way that they can change their behavior, e.g. ten deep breaths. #LostAtNPS
#LostAtNPS A1 I feel that black-and-white thinkers, like Kelvin, would definitely be receptive during Plan B's if some of those black & white areas can be turned more "gray" by some of the social thinking methods.
A2.A colleague of mine uses the characters from “Inside Out” every day as a check in during their morning routine. The kids choose where they are coming in and she can check in with kiddos ASAP before the day starts! Awesome visual for Kinders! #LostAtNPS
A1: Using social stories through children’s picture books. This one is excellent. @jcteachfirsties gave this to me as it was about cyber bullies & too advanced for her firsties. My students LOVED it! Great conversations! #LostAtNPS
A2: I have heard Ss say, ‘I’m feeling red.’ It’s helpful as the adult to know. I might tackled the problem differently when I know this information. #LostAtNPS

A2. Use of boardmaker pics would be helpful to come up with several possible solutions to problems. Also, a 5 pt scale may be used to prioritize feelings and solutions. #LostatNPS
It is absolutely AWESOME to read this example of how visuals can be incorporated across curriculum including Adapted Phys Ed! It can fit anywhere if we think creatively! #LostAtNPS

late but still here! A1: i think social learning needs focus now more than ever...i think it’s about bringing it to the level each student is at in the moment, perspective, using examples to explain, then guiding them as they use their own words/actions #LostAtNPS
A2: I use the Zones as well for student to identify how they're feeling, some share "why" before lesson begins & to get it off their chest so they can focus on the lesson. Then we check in at the end of class too. Been googling more about this as I read responses #LostAtNPS

A2 I have many academic visuals around the room, along with positive quotes and whole body listening posters. I use nonverbal cues such as thumbss up etc, to check in with kids. However, I do not have emotional rating posters like many of you are referring to. Hmmmm.🤔
Q3:Joey & Consuelo. When we look at how Plan B looks when applied 2 different students, we see that not all lagging skills are “loud or disruptive”. Share an example of a “quiet” lagging skill you’ve observed in Ss which may not have been recognized B4 the book study. #LostAtNPS
Q2: i like to have students express their feelings, frustrations, concerns, etc through free writes, which are sometimes just lists of words or symbols or scribbles that allow the student to express something and then let it all go #LostAtNPS
#LostAtNPS A3: Recently, I encountered a situation where a student was responding to Qs related to lessons by raising their hand and then retracting. Turns out the S would have the answer but then would lose it if not called upon immediately. Collab solution=Post It Note!
#LostAtNPS A1: I think part of it all is learning how to have meaningful conversations, and to not assume that all the skills of communication and learning are developed.

A2 I agree that identifying a feeling color is just the first step of the process. teaching students what tools to use to get and'or stay in the green zone ready to learn is what it is all about! #LostatNPS

#LostAtNPS Hello friends. I’ve been reading tweets; just forgot to check in. A2 I love the idea of visual feelings for kiddos. So often kids don’t understand their feelings. It’s up to us to help them identify feelings,
process it, and use a SKILL to deescalate
Hey Lost At School friends - just walked in from NMS conferences. Long day. No steam left in the tank to chat tonight. Loving the book. Have fun. #LostAtNPS@ZajacSLP
#LostAtNPS A2: for rehearsals I teach with effectiveness in mind, how can I most quickly express what I want the students to know. For me that happens a lot through conducting, but generally if you can’t say it in 7 words or less - demonstrate. Show what you mean
Today in class!I had a chat with “Johnny” after school today. He and I figured out that the reason for his constant loud mumbling in class is because he is frustrated! Plan B solution, practice with me to not to get so emotional in class! #LostAtNPS
A3: I have noticed Ss can use distracting questions or anecdotes to get away from the task at hand not because they don’t want to do work but because they feel lost or confused but can not communicate what is going on. now i am able to address it #LostAtNPS
A3. I currently have a student who puts his head down on the desk if he doesn’t understand the directions and gets very down on himself. I’m working on helping him trust that I am here to help and just because he needs support it doesn’t mean he isn’t capable! #LostAtNPS
Q2A2: Although I have not had the need to use pictures when attempting to use with behaviors, I have differentiated by approaching Ss at their level of emotional maturity. #LostAtNPS
A3. I like Kim's idea of using a post it note for answering questions. Or, if a Ss doesn't feel comfortable asking the teacher for help, having something on their desk as a signal to the teacher that they need help instead of just sitting there. #LostatNPS
Great! Him knowing you are truly there for him is huge. With that instilled in him, he is much better served going forward with a proper mindset. #LostAtNPS
A3: I keep thinking about Joey getting embarrassed. I feel like there’s more to the story. With Mrs. Woods using CPS on more obvious difficulties, I think she is building a good relationship with Joey so he will open up more about that. #LostAtNPS
A3: Had a chat with another "Johnny" today, his quiet behavior was not putting work into writing a retell, we came up with a solution together for next time :)#LostAtNPS

A3 Lagging organizational skills are often very quiet..but can lead to bigger issues and emotional stress..losing homework, starting assignments late, losing supplies, forgetting things at home. All of these organizational skills need to be taught, sometimes explicitly.
#LostAtNPS Thank you everyone for another fantastic chat and for sharing what works, what doesn't and what you want to learn more about! Have a great weekend!

A3 Actually I notice my own son has lagging skills remembering to bring his homework home sometimes and stuff home from school, e.g.halloween costume, Patriots hat. He always wants me to email his teacher to tell her he forgot stuff #LostAtNPS
Absolutely fantastic example of HS level application of Plan B in action with a very timely mutually satisfactory solution. Thanks for sharing this @mgodfreynhs ! #LostAtNPS

Q3 #LostAtNPS A lagging behavior that has become more apparent is the potty time "patterns" of a student of mine with attentional issues. If we're in the bathroom when it's time to write homework-then we're not responsible 4 it-since we didn't write it!? Hmmmm #nicetry
A3-#LostAtNPS Student who lags in recess skills-yes-unable to interact and play on the playground-this follows into the classroom and has serious impact!
Q3A3: Standing today right next to a very impulsive student who talks aloud non stop, I felt his agitation in the air. I told him that I could feel his nervousness. He responded that the did not know how to stop it! My heart ached for him! #LostAtNPS
If you see this in your classroom, you have identified a symptom of lagging skill. Seek to understand and enlist the insight of your OT as you navigate Plan B. #LostAtNPS
Empathy is essential to SEL as well as navigating academic learning. Plan B is a perfect place to begin the work of supporting and specifically building in opportunities for skill development. #LostAtNPS
