Stopping in for a bit, Mikaela, K-5 Music, IL. Break is less than a week away. Unfortunately, the little kids think that vacation starts every tomorrow we have at school. One Friday, some were wound up bc they thought Christmas was on the weekend. #weirded
My name is Christie, I’m in MN. Winter break maybe starts Friday or maybe next Friday. Am in early stages of new LT sub position, wiped out today, slightly intimidated by new setting and ninja skills of coworkers. TMI? #weirded
#WeirdEd. Bridgette. Christmas break starts at 3 pm on 12/22 when kids are dismissed. Same time the room is supposed to be boxed up so room can have carpet turned to tile.
#WeirdEd My break will really start when the students show up for 8th period, see the substitute (Me) and book out of there like it wasn't their class in the first place.
#WeirdEd To make things more difficult, I'm transferring to a different school for 2nd half of Student Teaching, have to redo relationships, get to know Ss. Fun, but most of my cohort isn't starting from scratch next semester, easier on their edTPA
A1 Getting rid of all the old people. I'm half serious. Back when I was in my 20s, I was surrounded by professors who were counting the days 'til retirement. #weirded
A1: Acknowledge that not every day is going to be super positive "sunshine and rainbows and lollipops" and get down to what actually matters in your classroom. #weirded
A1: Change it your own damn self. Ask forgiveness instead of permission. Twirl all them haters. Be bold. Imagine impossible things. Push the envelope to see how much of the nonsense paperwork you can avoid. #WeirdEd
#WeirdEd A1 Yesterday, I was at orientation for Student Teaching II, majority was White, especially in the main campus (I'm in an off campus, closer to metro area), and I'm left to wonder whether these fellow peers (who I barely see bc main campus is 1.5 hrs from me...
#WeirdEd A1 They aint gonna change nuttin' in NYC until they stop pushing anyone with 10+ years experience out the door so they can hire new, untenured staff they can push around
#WeirdEd ... and I'm left to wonder if they're prepared to face the racially diverse classrooms. I'm sure their teaching's solid, considering they're apparently super hyperfocused compared to my cohort, who all have lives and lack access to main campus
A1 man, honestly depends what system you're in. Some are stifling and no matter what u do, can't affect change. Others are supportive, open, listening & you & your curriculum can rock #weirded#toolongtweet
A1: Change it your own damn self. Ask forgiveness instead of permission. Twirl all them haters. Be bold. Imagine impossible things. Push the envelope to see how much of the nonsense paperwork you can avoid. #WeirdEd
My uni does a really good job of making you face reality before you fully commit to the profession. They have you go to an inner city school for a day, where some have experienced significant trauma. For some, that was the breaking point. #WeirdEd
A1: We also need admin who are willing to allow Ts to try new things, Pilot new programs, let @nathan_stevens set up shop in the new maker space, etc... #weirded
#WeirdEd Yeah, maybe I'm assuming too much of it,also I'm prob pretty annoyed bc my cohort (metro campus) seem left by the wayside bc we're not gonna drive 1.5 hrs just to have office hour or something. Email's not enough for the kind of assistance TPrep requires
Yea... I was in a program at a private religious college with classmates who were mostly planning to teach in parochial schools, and they had their heads so far in the sand. #weirded
#WeirdEd That's pretty excellent. That's the upside of my metro campus, we're placed in racially diversed settings, where it's really majority SoC populations. Now, whether staff reflects that or not.....
#weirded, A1 so really promoting teacher communities in twitter and google+ is good for change in education too, I've gotten so many good ideas that are about new ideas here.
That's a great program. I like how student teachers are in the classroom much longer than we were. Now we need them to catch up w/ what's going on in the world of EdTech #weirded

I "block taught" in a very rural area and did my 16 weeks of student teaching in a more metro area where they are considered "the dangerous school." It was fine. Felt prepared. #WeirdEd
Thoughts on THE LAST JEDI:
- way more nudity than expected
- smart idea to do it all as a rap
- Charlie Sheen totally holds his own
- Adam Driver's love ballad felt awkward
- didn't like the 22-minute Olaf short
- Smash Mouth's "All Star" was a bold end-credits choice
#WeirdEd Yesterday, there were also complaints that they had to drive down to our campus for 1 of our seminars/5. Considering we have to drive down for the other 4, yeah thanks.
Also, they get more information via email more frequently than they do.
#WeirdEd Lol, strayed far from my train of thought. Consdering college, that'll lead to mostly white educators who won't inspire SoC to be teachers, leading to that continued cycle of disparity between SoC population & EoC population.
Sometimes it depends on the program. I work in dual language and a fair amount of the bilingual teachers are white. May be hard to find candidates with the specific requirements. #weirded
#WeirdEd Lol, strayed far from my train of thought. Consdering college, that'll lead to mostly white educators who won't inspire SoC to be teachers, leading to that continued cycle of disparity between SoC population & EoC population.
you'd hope, right, that their classes would have broke it down for them (I remember 1 in particular about race and social issues in edu) but if not, hope that mentors will. #weirded
#weirded, prioritizing learning by increasing the amount of time students are in the class over the year. I'm all for year-round, but we gotta pay for it.
A2: The attitude towards the profession. I’m a 1st year male teacher and I know a lot of other great young men that would make a difference. My personal goal is to continue to glorify the job! (Thanks for adding the postive part to this ?$ #WeirdEd
#WeirdEd A2 I'm gonna answer my own question wrong, but I think grades/report cards should be waaay down the change first list. There's more important, realistic things to fix
+ esp the "customized" parts which are mostly cut & paste from other lesson plans, and which BY UNION CONTRACT, I don't need to provide acc to whatever whim ... #WeirdEd +
#WeirdEd Shar- grade 2- late for the party A1- do it. Know why you do it. Then show that it works and scrap if it doesn't. A2: lack of collective teacher efficacy and trust from admin. More potlucks.
More about teaching skills & mindset. Not teaching programs/apps. Schools will use many different tools, so they can't learn everything. Encourage #growthmindset#weirded

When I was a part-time instructor in my early to mid twenties, I encountered a wall of indifference from older professors who really were just counting the days. #weirded
A2: Inequity and funding. We should fund education for *all* as though it is the most important thing we can do as a society. Because isn’t it? #WeirdEd
Part of a final project I had was show how I will keep up with edtech. literally say what I will do/subscribe to etc.
Bc edtech changes so quickly gotta learn the mindset not the program/app/trend #weirded

@msmusiced, @polonerd, @shadow_uzumaki
#WeirdEd Yeah, I'm assuming too much, considering mostly the student population of their main campus, as well as location of Uni, and I barely see them. Kinda makes me prejudice, but considering trends in edu, with precedent. If y'all talk abt race in a room of mostly white...
A2: The scale needs to change. To give every student a mostly adequate education we dehumanize and reduce them to numbers, grades, and test scores. The only way to change that is to decrease student teacher ratios. #weirdED
College students will be fine with EdTech- it's older staff in my experiences that are an issue. And #growthmindset is becoming edujargon that is way overused. #weirded
I plotted a 365 day school once to help w students who struggled with breaks in routines (esp vacation breaks) got a lot of frown faces (ps not expected anyone would be there all 365 days, but some would....) #weirded
Agree that it can be over used, but it does explain the difference between those who are willing to make positive changes and those who are complacent.
Not so much about age. #weirded

#WeirdEd I agree somewhat. Though, I think, from what my peers have said, they picked up on it really fast w/practicum + student teaching. Nothing teaches fast like actual classroom work

College Ss need to understand how to use tech in the classroom to help close learning gaps & enhance lessons. Then let them find ways to transfer that knowledge to tools/apps in their new schools. #weirded

I’m challenging myself to get into their 45 mins work 15 min break schedule - almost had it last year, misplaced my mindset for it this year (group that doesn’t transition well) but gonna try a thematic-day approach next week! #weirded

#WeirdEd Also another thing I learned yesterday, omg it could cost me, $100, $200, $300 if I screw up my edTPA upload?! WHAT. Those Teacher Assessments need to change as well.... wtf
#WeirdEd. A2
Meeting kids where they are.......
Convincing kids that education is important
My kiddos really like school for the fun and I need to lead them to learning. Some days it feels like kicking and screaming
And that is definitely the key - find the parts that work best for your students. Of course, step one is getting to know your students and pedagogy is a big part of that. #WeirdEd
it's really up to the districts to invest in PD. New, veteran Ts, students benefit when districts invest in quality PD & support #weirded I dont think edu progs can prep with specific tools, but rather (!) mindset

The idea that kids’ learning can be fully assessed by standardization. My 2nd graders in SW rural KS aren’t the same as 2nd graders in Manhattan. Stats don’t always show a true picture - standardization has its flaws.
#WeirdEd Q3 Put A1 and A2 together. Can it be done? Can you get more specific? Can you do it? Change your answers to Q1 or Q2 if any of the answers to Q3 are No until you can make it Yes.
"Submitted for your approval, an aging teacher with a prepared document outlining all his aims, objectives, goals, hopes & dreams.Mr. Burke is imbued with a desire to teach and yet he's found himself entangled in the Edu-Bureaucracy Zone" #WeirdEd
Great lesson for them.
Always look for the best way to help Ss understand. Require them to create 2 lessons - 1 with tech and 1 without. Also teaches about having a plan b. #weirded

More focus on deep learning tasks and how tech is meaningful in that kind of work. Not just “let’s make a hyperdoc because it is cool and I learned how to do that in a workshop.” #WeirdEd

#weirded a1 giving a voice to the kids, teachers, and parents. Putting their voice at a level that has power. Listening to what we have to say with an open mind... and then we have to listen 2. Then have an actual discussion (not a debate, a discussion) about what’s best for kids
Age of Ss? It might be that they've been numbed from years of uninspired classes. Younger kids seem to come in dying to learn and sometimes schools/Ts drum the curiosity and love of learning out of them:( Our job to rekindle it!
#weirded
#WeirdEd A3 regarding MY TPrep, Ive already spoke at length about issues to change, my cohort was practically a guinea pig bc they made lotsa changes during the summer b4 I entered, it's on their end now, esp since Im in last sem this Spring
#WeirdEd A3: I've become more vocal both on here and other Social Media about the importance of education and challenging people's misconceptions. Putting my money where my mouth is by presenting at local & nat'l conferences. #weirded
A3. Sure. Take examples to state houses and senates and lobby for change there. Would require Ts to get *gasp* political in advocating for equity. #WeirdEd
#WeirdEd A3 other option, I'm taking serious consideration abt. becoming a Prof. for the program, like 10-20 yrs down the road. Not sure if it'll happen, but....
#WeirdEd a2 we talk alot about @Malala and civil rights and the battles fought for my intergrated class. Instead of fighting others we need to demand equal good education......... Even when my internet filters have been down for two months
Agreed. The tech they know centers around social media and entertainment, not so much about effective use to close learning gaps. A lot of this is based on good pedagogy & building on it w/ tech #weirded

We can speak up. We can go to our admin & address it. Collab with parents. Use open-mindedness and kindness to get respect of others so we can have that discussion. Be direct & intentional with our words. Involve others. Stop just complaining - actually try to get others on board
#WeirdEd A3 Yes I can & have. Example: I know the writing standard&our team has talked abt it. My kids needed a chance to write. I know tech. I combined that. Took a risk. Kids were proud of their writing. Shared with admin.
#WeirdEd My goal every year is to respark joy in math. So tired of people hating on math for no reason besides having terrible math classes/teachers. #weirded
A3 teaching Socratic Circles to focus on critical thinking, cooperative learning, and giving feedback. Can be framed around literacy or social aspects. Yep A1 and A2 go together #WeirdEd
#weirded A3 - hold on, I gotta remember my answers from Q1, Q2. 1) keep using twitter, 2) keeping learning year round. I can't fund year round myself though for my students.
#WeirdEd A3 but, as someone mentioned, there needs to be a change in the purpose of education/teachers. This'll help change TPrep all across the board. UrbanEd and SPED tackle important issues, why doesn't GenED?
#WeirdEd Q3 Put A1 and A2 together. Can it be done? Can you get more specific? Can you do it? Change your answers to Q1 or Q2 if any of the answers to Q3 are No until you can make it Yes.
A3: #WeirdEd If the frenzied pace is my problem, I should chose quality over quantity. Delegate. Stop fixing hardware and refocus on sold pedagogy. Leverage the power of technology to automate work and teach asynchronously.
A3: Huh? Umm, for me it's about giving more opportunities to those who generally don't receive them. I'm also nontenured so...it's a little complicated. Subtle changes. #weirded
This vision of the building is great. What am I trying to build? Then learn/find the tools I need. It definitely drives me to really understand how to use the tools. #weirded

#WeirdEd I'm just working off from having to be in orientation yesterday. There was talk of having 2 to accommodate my cohort & main campus cohort at our respective locations, but apparently, they can't be bothered (my perspective, not an official explanation)
I am trying to promote a hetarchy - level playing field with situational hierarchies - letting/pushing those who should lead at specific times and events - whatever the seniority #weirded
#weirded, that would be okay too, in HS, they are getting away from being kids but end up spending so much time of work and sports and get pulled out of school for sports that they end up losing time and get behind because of it.
#WeirdEd A4 Yorktown, Hamilton. 'cause imagine the passion of those Revolutionaries as they fought their ass off to change the world, as exemplified by the wonderful cast...
#WeirdEd Proof we need comprehensive edtech in TPrep, I never used any of those apps/tech in my courses, only one really introduced was EverNote. Then again, we only had 1 day a week for my courses in Sem 1 and 2..
The great thing about edtech is once you get comfortable with using tech in the classroom educationally the teacher starts to find ways to make it meaningful and productive. Using tech just for the sake of using tech is not beneficial and kinda a waste. #WeirdEd

You stood apart in my calloused heart, and you taught me and here's what I learned:
That love is about the changes you make and not just three small words.
#weirded okay, so to really concentrate, I neeeeed silence and get super distracted by music. just saying, so I was listening to the Godfather soundtrack andI feel like there's change in the story as the Godfather role gets transferred there.
I used GarageBand and was introduced to all sort of iPad apps for inclusion (for kids with exceptionalities), but I don't have any iPads at work. That didn't do me any good. #weirded
My uni uses Google Apps as part of their district email and everything else. Considering they're a huge player in EdTech that could be helpful? #WeirdEd

There is so much edtech out there that I think lots of Ts become overwhelmed. With all the options, it's tough to choose a FEW great tech tools and get really good at integrating them in meaningful ways. Takes time, trial & error ... from Ss and Ts! #WeirdEd

#WeirdEd A5 Joining my 1st #Educolor chat kinda clicked together how my race & how our education system screws over SoCs made me shift from "I'm scared of teaching, 'cause I dunno stuff" to "Goddamn it, I'mma go to teaching bc I'mma show these white ppl...."
Equity. I had to challenge my preconceived ideas of public school teachers and students, since I went to parochial for k-12. It's made me a fierce advocate for public ed. #WeirdEd
A5 I went almost exclusively small-group in order to meet everyone where they are. Threw lists of lifeless standards away and TAUGHT. Shocker. #WeirdEd
A5. Writing referrals. Used to write them, stopped after reflecting on a S and their actions, what they said re: being sent out related to feeling abandoned at home. #weirded
A5 My philosophy has always been that we need make school a safe place for all students to want to learn. It hasn’t changed but it always is reaffirmed #WeirdEd
#WeirdEd Oh, I like this answer. Also, I used to be a server in an Italian restaurant and I SWEAR we played the music from that movie over the PA regularly
Absolutely. Although there are some Office 365 schools out there, Google has cornered the EDU market with Google Suite. They're like the good witch to Pearson's bad witch. #weirded

#weirded a5 I used to be all for massive differentiation until I had to put it into practice. I have reading levels that span 4 grades. It’s hard. Now I’m more thinking how can we change the whole system to better meet Ss needs & allow teachers to give more thought to 1 level
#WeirdEd A5 Mine was when I had to take a test for my credential transfer and needed to sit in a chair not talking or moving for forever. Immediately changed how my seating expectations were.
#weirded, full immersion PD for three weeks taught me different a great pedagogy that help students learn more. What caused it, free grad credit, a $1000 stipend for the time, my availability and then $400 in science technology included. so - $$$$
#weirded it is the best thing we could have asked for. It was bumpy at first but I’m thankful for it. We now use iPad white boards and other things... it’s changed how we teach math for the better I think.

A5. Not the biggest change, but as a teacher, I knew I would be continually learning. I consciously maintain the mindset that I'm also a student in my own classroom. I learn with and from the Ss. I try to be a model for lifelong learning vs. learning for the test #WeirdEd
