Angie knows me, but for those who don't I am a HS English teacher in Berkeley County!
Hey good to see you both!
Let's get started =)
Q 1 What is an effective school community partnership?
Our AP is hosting a . Join in on the conversation about school community! :) https://t.co/JQ44Q6vmjs
Creating community schools! Half an hour away! Let's do this!
A1: One that offers open communication and showcases what goes on in the school with the community
Jeni Gearhart. Heggesville High School. English teacher
Art K-5 Kanawha County. Hi, !
A1: When all stakeholders work together do what's best for student learning!
A1 one that uses the resources of the community with the school for the betterment of all students
A1 effective school-comm partnership is 1 where stakeholders have a voice, seat at the table, & schls provide transparency
Q1 community feels valued in the school. Mock interviews, new teacher luncheon make valuable school, business interactions
Late to join, sorry. Penny technology coach Pinch and Kenna Elementary
My old district didn't do this so much... Schools need to share their stories and positives with the community!
A1-putting on community events and having Ts get out in the community to bridge the gap between parents and teachers
A1 It should be a mutually beneficial relationship.
Q1. Also, school feels valued by community. It goes both ways
A1: You know you're doing it right when the kids notice it!
A1 effective schl-comm partnership value variety of Ss accomplishments. Meet Ps where they r. & put Ss (lrng) n driver's seat
showcasing the good we do is critical!
A1: Having an open door for parents and community
Bingo! Every school in my district utilizes FB to share their stories/news. Some tweaks needed, but a good start!
A1 A school should be the heart of the community.
if we donโt do it who will?
Q 2 Beyond parents... how do involve other community members/organizations to maximize student support?
we need to drop the veil of mystery and embrace the knowledge base in the community
A1: Everyone needs to have a voice, not just a select few...collaboration is key!
absolutely! some parents didn't have a positive experience!! we have to fix that
But that's the problem. So many T's don't share their stories and don't want to in some cases!
A2 . Public outreach, recognizing business partners at games, mock interviews, guest speakers.
that's critical! we do home visits to try to reach them!
A2 I think PBLs/CBLs with a community focus or serving a community need are pretty amazing.
A2 by recognizing the benefits of brining in outside expertise on content area beyond CTE classrooms T = facilitator for learning
A2: Reach out and give them a reason to show interest in the mission of the school and the purpose of what kids are learning
just add the thanks for the support
A2: Meeting needs of community with service groups, inviting members in that are knowledgeable on certain topics
A2- Our school every grade level does community service projects, also partnering with businesses to promote student success
A2: Brining in community members to talk with our kids and work with them
A2: I've actually leveraged community organizations with a Facebook presence to help share/reshare our posts to inc audience.
Another Hedgesville AP in the house! Glad you're here!
what a great school culture
PBL could be a HUGE factor in establishing relationships in community. Practical & real life skills & learning
A2 inviting community members and businesses in to speak in classes and to students. Creating partnerships that benefit both grps.
do you all include wrap around services to support students in wirt co??
A2 cont'd -- community mentors are extremely helpful, too.
A2 get to know your local chamber of commerce for help with business partnerships
thanks Derek. Glad to be here
Yes! In many cases, we aren't aware of what our communities truly have
What additional support services... dhhr, safe at home, counseling have you found most critical to student support?
A2: Agreed! Ss can serve the community! Work together to make the community better! https://t.co/wwLtol2ctZ
A2 I think PBLs/CBLs with a community focus or serving a community need are pretty amazing.
We have a multi-disciplinary task force that meets regulrly. Includes social services. Monitrs at risk youth. You?
and too often we see the school as a fiefdom that can't mix with the community... Together we are stronger
Ss, communities, & families working together tears down barriers and promotes positivity & change. Everyone works for common goal
Sorry I am late Tim White, Kanawha County Schools
One of my schools has medical/dental clinics. Awesome for families with limited mobility.
Q3 What effective programs (wrap-around services, Handle with Care Juvenile Drug Court) have worked for your students
sorry to be late Missy Stowers Piinch Elem 1st grade
Q3 with our school being based in Romney but Ss from the whole state LEAs are vital to our success in services with Ss
A3: Open lines of communication between teachers and counselors. We have amazing guidance counselors in our school!
Early intervntn from Ts who lead w/ the heart. Still need to inc awareness of issues Ss frm poverty brng to schl.
We also have an amazing social worker who helps families navigate assistance programs.
A2: Having a strong LSIC is a great way to build partnerships and transparency!
Just ask! Getting over my reservations about asking strangers to get involved has reaped great benefits!
project AWARE grant allows us a mental health counselor, safe at home
I've seen rural communities partner w/local businesses to provide free unrestricted wifi n their establishments to support Ss lrng
we also have a talk to me program and several community lead support groups and juvenile drug court
student council, Tech force, 7 Habits club
We have a family support worker that helps connect families to resources that are vital for help. She is awesome!
Q3 cont. DHHR local attendance workers and coordinators, Heath services, all locally based
Shoes - the free shoes program has reached so many children. It's hard to learn when your feet hurt!
yes! And they do a great job at connecting community resources
A3: We have 2 different groups that come into the schools and work with at risk youth
A3 Our school has a Kids Hope Program the mentors work with Ss, talk to them, play games, they are someone they can talk to
A3. The Berkeley county backpack program is a great example of community supporting student needs
Hey Tim! Hope you're off to a great start this year.
our school does programs with a local church for Ss that are low SES
A3 not sure which programs, exactly -- there are so many! Food/clothing pantries are very helpful.
A3 I'm a believer that anything extra helps. It's noticed when students are important and that their success is a the focal point.

A3: Local churches create snack packs or offer toto ring.
We can chat off here. I'll fill ya in, it's awesome!
Q4 access is really a problem for digital resources, lack of high speed data or wifi restrictions (green bank) as examples
our county added wifi for the kids to use w/ their school iPads
Kanawha County has a WiFi on the Buses program that hope to be soon parked in the "last mile" areas https://t.co/AAWoiXDKHu

There are some places in WV where dial up is an only option still
That is so cool!!! Love it!
Right! There's several in our that can really only participate from their school connection. That's terrible.
A4: Facebook is widely used by families as a go to... Schools should be using it to connect
Love the "toto" ring....Great recording group! https://t.co/SmJIEj3sY8

A6 I started a community identity project that went south last year. I want a do-over this year.
