Please introduce yourself, what grade you teach, and what you’re most excited about this week!
Welcome to ! Today we’re going to be discussing growth mindset in math with
Hi all! I am Mo from Team TenMarks. Former early elementary T. Very excited for another great chat this week!
Hi everyone! Desiree from MI 3rd grade
Welcome Thanks for being here!
I'm Chris a Grade 9, 10 & 11 Math Teacher in Montreal, Canada It's an honor to be moderating tonight
Michelle 5th Grade Math, I'm excited about being on Spring Break!
thanks for being here! We are honored to have you!
Hi Michelle! Great to see you again!
Q1: What is your biggest obstacle to a ?
A1: Biggest obstacle is Ss deep-rooted fears, habits, anxieties that can be hard to shake. Its never a quick fix
Becky Snyder- 5th grade- one more day till my extended spring break!
A1: one of biggest is that there isn't always enough time built I to explore all possibilities of or
A1 Convincing students that there is more than just effort
A1: Hesitance to try even though the task is difficult
being afraid of math because its too hard or they're not good at math
. time constraints are always a challenge!
A1: Persuading students that they can do it if they try a little
I think that this is a really important point. If we teach the understanding we need more time to explore
And the correct answer isn't the most important thing!!! Its the learning
Q2: What stops you using technology to encourage a in your classroom?
Jennifer from Oregon, joining late...
oh dear, I can see how this could have negative connotations
Perseverance is challenging for many little ones who look quickly to be rescued.
Don't worry, jump in, nice to have you! Q2 is: What stops you using technology to encourage a in your classroom?
wow can't believe this is real
A1: Did anyone say parents' as a barrier for students? Our mathematically traumatized society is perpetuated by parents.
A2 The fact that its TOOO easy to GOOGLE the answer!
AMEN! Getting parents to accept growth mindset is just as important as the kids!
A2: correctly using tech, tech being taken out for testing
A2: Access to current tech and TIME to set it up. I think is more about culture than tools.
We had a PBL chat last night and one of the questions was how do you make an un-googleable question?
Did anyone come up with a solution?
True - not just little ones! We have to teach students that it's okay to feel disequilibrium or confusion
. Agreed. If adults think it is ok not to be good at math than Ss will think it is ok too!
absolutely! I started a parents "math minute" session to teach them same language/strategies we use in class
but technology can be part of the culture? It is part of the culture in some places?
A2: using tech can be challenging when Ss quick pick answers.Takes modeling/strategy shares
Would love more info about that!
Nice - how and when do you do your "math minutes?"
Q3: How have you used technology in your class to encourage a ?
afraid it is. Trueley damaging and reinforces that there are math people and non math people
true - I'm thinking classroom culture about learning and talking to each other.
A1- educational and societal traditions that make it accessible to some and that this is an enevitable outcome
A3- I love using the youtube MOJO episodes! I am on 4/5 and they ask for them every day!
A3: I use to help Ss master on-level concepts as well as Mobymax for Tier 2 interventions
yes. It would be great if encouraged the sale if them to be stopped. Let's give positive messages only
I started in February I've had 3 so far. 1 after school, and 2 during ss lunch hour
A3: One Teacher told me today that her Ss take screenshots ("artifacts") of progress in tech tools (questions right, completed)
A3: we have a carpet summary at end of workshop where ss can share their success on
A3: We use Chromebooks in class to access things like and to complete quizzes using
A3 cont: Then she has them include the screenshots in their journals to show their growth. Loved this idea for visual reminder
A3: Document camera for sharing student work, graphing calculator/geometry software explorations...
A2
First of all, I wonder what tech promotes Fixed mindsets, and which promotes a
Desmos, but you shared that. :) And any apps/sites from - great virtual manipulatives
Q4: In a dream world how would technology fit into in your classroom? Please share.
How to promote FixedMindsets. Give Tech that focuses on:
Right/wrong answers
Speed
Memorized procedures or facts
A4 Technology would be a medium to increase students' conceptual understanding while also their interest in math
A4- you could write on it and as you made mistakes in computations, it alerted you before you solved a problem completely wrong
A4: T and Ss would use it seamlessly (never crashes or dies) to explore math concepts, share ideas and learn from mistakes.
A4: I'm intrigued by the new collaborative app, allowing ss to work together to make tutorials on devices
So much more to math than quick calculations! https://t.co/r5E8qS0vJt

are you using the latest version of Bridges?
No, but I know schools that do.
Okay last question coming up!
How to promote a -Provide tech that:
Includes visuals/models
Ss learn productively from mistakes
Is Cooperative
Q5: Looking forward how will you embed technology into your curriculum to encourage a .
just wondering what people who are using it think about its fit with and
A5
Ss should be actively creating, manipulating, making sense, communicating, collaborating, sharing...
Active-not passive!
A5- using jam sessions or IXL, you can promote learning through mistakes- Ss take screen shots and use them in notes
A5: Be careful about what technology you use. Make sure it promotes a (see criteria from ). https://t.co/NzJSdVm7JP
