Morning. I talk about it, let it out and let them talk about it. Then we get to work. It's ok to take a minute to deal with what ever the current distraction is. Then move on.
And I'm showing a movie Friday:)

We never miss a morning meeting. Even if it's 2 hours late or first thing in the afternoon, we'll still come together to greet one another and share. It helps ground us for whatever's up next and strengthens our connections when emotions are running high. #bfc530

I embrace it. Have a Charlie Brown Christmas Tree, Menorah Light, Kwanza nutcracker, & even a small Festivus pole in the front of the room, played the Driedel song during Hanukkah to start class & will play Straight No Chaser's 12 Days of Xmas today. Kids are kids once #bfc530

#bfc530 I try throw out positive motivators: not "You can do this!" Instead, "We can do this!" A reminder that we are all in this together. #MondayMotivation
I have oral presentations today and then some station work to help with the inevitable disruptions, comings and goings, etc. but it will be a very long week. #bfc530
Gm. Allow and plan for s driven distraction and derailment. When they bond together and pitch a movie and snack”just this one time !” I give in. They reset themselves after and feel victorious and renergized. I keep a movie 🍿 on standby during the season. #BFC530
The school term end in New South Wales this Friday and recommences on 29 January 2019 (after Australia Day Public Holiday). I start my holidays this Saturday and return to work on 14 January. #bfc530
We have our usual routines, but I switch things up around this time. This unit I'm doing a fully blended model where I haven't taught a single lesson in front of my class. They're loving it! @DeckToys@edpuzzle#bfc530

If snow is forecasted, I give my students homework to do a Snow Dance, threatening zeroes if we dont have a snow day. Some kids will break out in a dance right there and then. If I give them a few minutes of their fun, I get their attention for my fun, history #bfc530
Yes to routines. I also am conscious of the fact that not all students are looking forward to the break, not all students are expecting gifts and time with family. We are fortunate if we have these things. #bfc530

We're in the midst of writing narratives now so I'm also giving them the freedom to write. they seem to like being trusted with this task. Ideas are flowing! #bfc530
Chunk lessons/activities into short tasks that change often.
Also #thinkingclassroom problem solving in groups; when I do it well has Ss so engaged they forget to be distracted.

Last week during a particularly tough afternoon we just packed up early and headed outside into the woods. The fresh air was an instant reset-they all started happily working together. It completely turned our day around. Grateful for our outdoor space/supportive admin #bfc530

It’s really important to keep tasks and learning relevant during the holiday time. It shouldn’t be a surprise when students can’t keep it together because you didn’t plan with meaning. #bfc530
Yes! I've been working on the Sa Ta Na Ma mantra with my Ss- we do it every day after lunch- and a few days ago, one shouted out "Hey- SAN-TA Na Ma!!" It became much more of a festive cheer after that ;) #bfc530
I’ve thrown in “scrap the lessons” days here and there... math games to review old material, some geography stuff we don’t normally get to, attacking Qs from our “I wonder...” wall, extended inde reading by the crackling fire (on the smartboard), etc.
#BFC530
Have a great day everyone! It's a little hard to head out today- both my girls are home from college for winter break. I wanna stay home and bake cookies with them😉 #bfc530
Perhaps the distraction can become a source of learning. For example: if 1 snow flake weighs hardly anything, why does a whole bunch of snow flakes on a branch cause that branch to fall to the ground? #bfc530
My daughter will be one of those people staring tomorrow. Im not happy abt it especially since she just started at this school last month after our move :/ Casualty of divorce I suppose #bfc530

@DebbiSab @CoachKCullen this is what I got when I asked a 2nd grader what the white madness was that was falling from the sky. She also gave me directions for making it snow! #bfc530
Happy Monday ... heading into the last week before the Holiday Break ... trying to avoid whatever sickness is being passed around at school ... that is my goal for the week #bfc530
I definitely allow for more physical breaks and opportunities to burn off energy inside of the classroom. Here is one of my favorite Christmas videos (especially for younger students). #bfc530https://t.co/DmJuA1aast
As we're getting ready to wrap up this calendar year, what topics are you most interested in reading about on blogs? I'm planning my last 6 posts and I'd like to make them relevant. Thanks in advance. One will be a round up of the year's posts. #BFC530#edchat#NYedchat
It’s hard to stick to a routine however, I think with the snowy days, events, I try to take the Ss out as much possible, we borrow the snow shoes, skating rink or just throw snowballs at the wall as target practise. Instead of “making them focus” just channel that energy #bfc530
🎧 This VIDEO will bring a great start to your week: "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" (Vocal and Instrumental)... La Sierra University’s music students recorded this beautiful hymn as a gift to Christmas music lovers. https://t.co/HczcZP7grz ~ #LaSierraUniversity#BFC530#MondayMorning
My students know ABR - they should Always Be Reading. I don't assign formal HW often unless we are reading a class novel, they need to redo something, or they need extra review/ practice with a skill. #bfc530
I try routine. Something I’m trying this year is “math buddies” where my high school students walk to our district’s grade school. They pair up with a 4th grader and play a math game. My Ss become the experts in the room. Free field trip! #redbud132#bfc530
