Q1 Why is building community important? #Admin2b
  • MiriamCheuk - Moderator Sep 10 @ 8:05 PM EDT
A1: Building school communities allows students to feel connected and safe. When students feel a sense of belonging, they perform better academically and misbehaviors decrease. #admin2b
  • BryanMcDonaldPD Sep 10 @ 8:05 PM EDT
Went to Red River New Mexico. Beautiful country and something we look forward to each year. #admin2b

A1) It's like the saying: It takes a village.... Having a strong learning community creates a better learning experience on every level. Collaboration between teachers, parents, the community help socially, emotionally, and academically. #Admin2B
  • MiriamCheuk - Moderator Sep 10 @ 8:08 PM EDT

a1: builds connections, trust, and willingness- for staff and students! So important! #admin2b
  • ATinord Sep 10 @ 8:08 PM EDT
A1: When I think of community, I think of a group of individuals that support each other and that is an important factor when striving for academic/ professional success. #admin2b
  • BryanMcDonaldPD Sep 10 @ 8:09 PM EDT
A1: community brings a group of people together. Without community you simply have a lot of one room school houses. #admin2b
  • MiriamCheuk - Moderator Sep 10 @ 8:09 PM EDT
I’m reading Conscious Classroom Management for a training I’m giving. Would love to connect with you to hear all about the workshop. Was the workshop given by Rick Smith? #admin2b

A1: It’s all about relationships, build a community of trust, inclusion and kindness, you build a community of learners! 😊 #admin2b
  • ATinord Sep 10 @ 8:10 PM EDT
I totally agree, students will behave differently for you when they know you genuinely care:) #admin2b

Q2: What did you/could you do before students entered the building to build community with your staff? #admin2b
  • KHernandez_EDU Sep 10 @ 8:13 PM EDT
A1:W/o a sense of belonging, engagement is unlikely. Building community allows for cognitive & affective engagement. People must feel safe before they can risk. Through community, vulnerability/risk taking/growth become possible. #admin2b
  • RachelFunderbu2 Sep 10 @ 8:13 PM EDT
A2: One thing we try to do is a Back 2 School Bash for faculty and staff to kickoff the year getting to know each other and catch up from summer break. This is done outside of school hours to take some of the daily pressures off. #Admin2B
  • BryanMcDonaldPD Sep 10 @ 8:13 PM EDT
A2: Think about doing something outside the school for all staff. Picnic for everyone and their families, visit a Great Escape Room. Anything to have fun. #admin2b
  • MiriamCheuk - Moderator Sep 10 @ 8:13 PM EDT
A2: Summer retreats where team building activities take place are always great ways for people to establish connections and learn about others’ strengths, weaknesses, and interests. #admin2b
  • SusZanti5 Sep 10 @ 8:14 PM EDT
A2: I’ve seen staff outings from obstacle course running to picnics, the point is to get to know your staff before students ever step in the door! Spend time together to build community #admin2b
  • ATinord Sep 10 @ 8:15 PM EDT
I would require more team building activities during staff developments when students do not report. This way we can get to know one other before students arrive. #admin2b
  • BryanMcDonaldPD Sep 10 @ 8:16 PM EDT
A2: Remember not everyone can participate in before school actives. It does not mean they don’t want to be part of the community. Just other things have to come first. #admin2b
  • ATinord Sep 10 @ 8:16 PM EDT
    I totally agree!!#admin2b

  • GenieneD - Moderator Sep 10 @ 8:18 PM EDT
Q3: How do you plan to intentionally build community with your students (building wide-classroom level)? #admin2b
  • BryanMcDonaldPD Sep 10 @ 8:18 PM EDT
A2: be sure to be walking the halls when teachers are working in their room. Great chance to build stronger relationships. Be intentional! #admin2b
  • ATinord Sep 10 @ 8:19 PM EDT
I am taken back to the first week of school when we are drowned with PLC’s, trainings, and “beginning of the school year” tasks. As colleagues, we rarely have a chance to build relationships with one another. #admin2b
    In reply to @MiriamCheuk
  • MiriamCheuk - Moderator Sep 10 @ 8:19 PM EDT
A3: Learning their names, being intentional abt having conversations with each student & getting to know them during lunch, classroom visits, etc. I believe that the sum of + interactions w students will make an undeniable impact. #admin2b
  • RachelFunderbu2 Sep 10 @ 8:19 PM EDT
I try to build relationships with my students by taking the time to get to know them on a personal level. I interact with them and ask questions about likes/dislikes during breakfast and recess. We eat lunch together in the classrooms on Fridays as well. #Admin2B
    In reply to @GenieneD
  • KHernandez_EDU Sep 10 @ 8:20 PM EDT
A2: Take interest in them & their growth. Engage them in their passions, empower them to share their passions to grow and engage peers. #admin2b
  • KeriCollison Sep 10 @ 8:20 PM EDT
A3) classroom chants, pledges, connecting activities, noticing acts of kindness with each other, greetings. #admin2b
  • GenieneD - Moderator Sep 10 @ 8:21 PM EDT
Q4: What ways have you created community with your parents and families? #admin2b
  • SusZanti5 Sep 10 @ 8:21 PM EDT
A3: Spend time learning about each other, circles, games, “I am” stories and poems, have Ss share with one another, as Ts: participate with your students to build community! #admin2b
  • MiriamCheuk - Moderator Sep 10 @ 8:21 PM EDT
Sorry to hear that. Do take the time to surround yourself with people that can uplift you and support you. Is this your first year? :) #admin2b

  • BryanMcDonaldPD Sep 10 @ 8:21 PM EDT
I have always believed that at the b ginning of the year we should have minimal meetings so teachers can do what they need to be ready for the 1st day. #admin2b

Knowing a students name can go a long way! When I run into kids outside of school and call them by there name I can tell it makes them feel important! #Admin2B

A4: Invite them in to the school for events, and into the classroom to share their expertise and knowledge, have Ss create community PBLs and present them in the community, get connected via social media too! #admin2b
  • BryanMcDonaldPD Sep 10 @ 8:25 PM EDT
A3: build relationships with students outside the classroom as well as inside. Meeting students when parents drop them off. When they get off the bus. #admin2b
  • MiriamCheuk - Moderator Sep 10 @ 8:26 PM EDT
A4: Sending a letter/email or doing home visits before school starts & continue with ongoing communication with parents and families throughout the year, inviting them to school events and to be the public audience for student work… #admin2b
  • RachelFunderbu2 Sep 10 @ 8:26 PM EDT
I give my parents my personal cell #. I set ground rules for how/when to use it and for the most part follow them. It lets them know I am available to them for their child, and opens the lines of communication. Has worked wonders! #Admin2B

  • GenieneD - Moderator Sep 10 @ 8:26 PM EDT
Does anyone go out into the community? Home visits are my favorite! #admin2b
  • ATinord Sep 10 @ 8:27 PM EDT
A3: I would want staff members to exhibit community building. This can be with something minor like greeting students in the hallway or as they walk in class. Students should have examples to follow and staff should model expected behavior. #admin2b
  • BryanMcDonaldPD Sep 10 @ 8:28 PM EDT
A4: Be visibile. Show them you care about their children. Great them with a smile. Support the teachers of their children. #admin2b
  • GenieneD - Moderator Sep 10 @ 8:28 PM EDT
Many of my EL teachers do this. For some parents they are the only T they feel really comfortable with. At least at first. #admin2b

A4: I try to keep parents/ families involved by using https://t.co/vM8MnU8yue and Google Classroom to post important information regarding students, upcoming assignments, events, etc. I also have a school webpage but I am not great with posting information there. #admin2b
