Hey Neel & #pln365! I'm James from SC. HS Math T & aspiring admin.
My +: Getting students who think they couldn't do math (or were told they CAN'T do) to see something different in just 5 weeks!
I'm very excited to be involved with work on the Principals' Learning Network #NJDOEPLN2018 this year. Also excited to partake in a symposium of sorts @RowanUniversity on diversifying the workforce in our schools! #PLN365
Hi there! I’m Heather, K-5 Curriculum Admin from Hamilton, NJ! My s/thing positive is seeing all the great things going on in classrooms being shared! @NeelDesaiBA#PLN365
#pln365 Tom from Robbinsville, 24th year as a Middle School educator. At the close of an oral presentation today one student complimented another on the quality of their presentation without being prompted to do so!
Hi! 👋🏼 Blair Eiseman, Supervisor of PD, South Brunswick. Something positive that happened this year is the work done with the district mentor team to review and revise the handbook and plan for monthly support meetings for mentors and mentees.#PLN365
Good Evening #pln365. Something good that has happened is how well our scholars, staff, and parents are embracing our team teaching delivery model of instruction this year.
So excited to be part of #PLN365 tonight... this is Peter and something positive that has happened @sbsdco so far this year is simply, students and adults proactively (and happily) greeting one another throughout the day! The little things!
Sean Olson HS math teacher, head baseball coach, chess team advisor, and leadership alliance facilitator in southern NJ. #pln365
Our district is pursuing getting to know Ss on a personal level by focusing on ACEs, empathy, implicit bias, perspectives, etc.
Was driving back to my apartment from visiting my parents and pulled off the parkway to join! Something positive was we completed our first lab in 7th grade science class today! #pln365
Hi #PLN365 Cristina, principal of @sbsdmj in South Brunswick. We dedicated this week’s faculty meeting to writing personal, positive notes to each student in our school.
Welcome everyone! Question 1 coming up in one minute.
Remember, I will provide the questions using Q1, Q2...and you will provide the answers using the A1, A2 format. Remember to include #PLN365 in your response.
Agreed! So many Ss are so positive when coming to my class and it makes me feel great. Energy increases and positive learning environments are created. #pln365
Q1)Research has found that the best predictor of student success is the level of family involvement. Children benefit when families are included in multiple ways.
What do you do to initiate & to sustain strong relationships with the families of the children you teach? #PLN365
Hi everyone! I'm Jasmine a 3rd grade teacher and aspiring admin. I started this year's back to school with giving parents an opportunity to share their wishes for their kids and the parents are still sending them in! #pln365
Hi @NeelDesaiBA! #PLN365 I received an email today from a student I had 8 years ago. She moved to India right after second grade. So touched she reached out to me! 💕
Jeremy in Connecticut. Parent and @ParentCamp Board member. Very much into talking about family engagement! One highlight this week will be the open house tomorrow evening at our daughter's high school. #PLN365
Hello everyone- Chris (MS principal) from KC. I have seen acts of kindness as our students have welcomed new students and made them comfortable. #pln365
Absolutely and even more so in our area with high percentages of econ. disadvantaged students and highly diverse populations. We will definitely benefit if this initiative is sustained. #pln365
A1) I always made it a point to try to have at least one moment that made my kids want to share about school with their families. Kids that talk about school create the highest levels of parental engagement. #pln365
Hey All!!! I’m Paula from VA!! Our littlest littles and already learned many of the routines and procedures they need to make sure learning happens All day!!! #CESshines@CoventryYC#PLN365
A1. Try to have face to face communication as much as possible and I am leading a parent book study about MS Tweens to help relate to our parents. #pln365

#PLN365 At back to school night students are provided with a survey in an effort to open up lines of communication. Parents provide feedback about the children as learners. Message is delivered that we are in this together.

Hi I am Scott a Math Academic Support teacher in North Brunswick Township. Something exciting in our district is the launch of three dual language Kindergarten classes in our district! #pln365#bilingual#truenorthbrunswick
Welcome everyone!
Please introduce yourself and share something positive that happened in your classroom, school or district this year. Remember to include #PLN365 in your responses.
A1: Relationship building starts by finding out what the preferred method of communication is. Find a way to connect with those parents.Nothing meets a F2F with a parent though. Keep that contact constant. #PLN365
A1: I send home an opening letter, personally invite parents to Open House and reach out as needed for the good and the needs improvement. I also provide periodic updates of class activities. #pln365
A1. As a teacher, I sent home a daily email w the “scoop” for the day: what we learned, homework, important dates, questions to ask at dinner, links to videos to help parents help their kids, etc. #PLN365
A1) I make it a point to try to let everyone know we have an open door policy. This is supported by being visible and engaging with family members daily. #pln365
A1) letting parents know what their children are doing that is kind or something positive that happened. I don’t always want to be reaching out for something negative. #pln365
A1: Something I used to do was make positive phone calls home, it really helped build connections early in the year, open communication is key. In my new role, I am looking to work with district partners to boost family engagement through planning events. #PLN365#allin4NB
A1: I call all my families & introduce myself. I ask them if they have any questions, invited them to Open House & ask them to tell me what they feel makes their child special. When I meet their child, I already know something special about them #pln365
A1: Offer as many opportunities as possible to make connections (phone calls, emails, etc.). Also be sure to be very responsive when someone opens up communication. I prioritize my response ASAP to keep them involved and encourage them to keep the conversation going. #pln365
A1 Communicate in person or over the phone as much as possible, with positive or negative messages. Consistent communication builds that relationship and strengthens it throughout the year. #pln365
A1 Love this question, I connect at beginning of year through note, email, also send updates regularly and share resources through @edmodo and @RemindHQ , I also wrote a blog about family engagement for @Getting_Smart#pln365
In reply to
@NeelDesaiBA, @edmodo, @RemindHQ, @Getting_Smart
A1. Start the year with as much positive communication as possible, and try to keep regular communication throughout the year. I try to make lessons exciting and engaging, and students write a monthly newsletter about what they’ve been doing in class for their families #pln365
Q1: I encourage staff to make positive phone calls or send "just because" emails. Today, for example, I sent an email to the parents of a new student to let them know he is starting to become accustomed to the school and making new friends. #whitmanwtps#pln365
A1: We had our 1st annual grandparents day at #teammomauguin to celebrate international grandparents' day. It was the BEST & most positive experience. Don't know who smiled more, Ss or g-parents! #pln365
A1 I let parents know that I am available to meet in person, phone, email, whatever works for them, and I do not waste time before responding to the emails #pln365
Q2) What do you see as the biggest obstacle to parent engagement in your class, school or district?
What have you done or what can you do to overcome these obstacles and encourage these parents to be more engaged in your class, school or district?
#PLN365
A1 - As an administrator, I've found that using social media helps a lot! Parents feel connected when they see pictures and videos of the school day. I love telling my school's story, and I love that parents can feel a part of it whether at home, work, traveling, etc. #pln365
We have about 100 new students this year!! I started making #GoodNewsCallOfTheDay Parents Love it and we have great conversations!! Here’s today’s #pln365
A1) This year, we have started using ClassDojo as a school-wide tool to communicate with parents. You can post pictures of your daily activities. The posts get translated to Vietnamese which is amazing because most of our parents are non-English speakers! #pln365
A1: Implementing @seesaw this year has been a huge tool for increasing parental involvement/relationships. I use for class communication, students upload their learning pics/videos to digital portfolios, and parents comment/like their Ss work. Lots of positive feedback! #pln365
A1b: Also love telling our story on our social media pages! Photos w/explanations so families have a springboard to start conversations about what their children did in school. Many of our Ts also use Remind app for pics, and regular communication. #pln365
Sorry! Bad internet over here....
A - Our kindergarten teachers host 1:1 meetings with each family to establish a great working relationship before the school year even starts #pln365
A1 At dismissal I always make it a point to walk out and shake parents hands as they pick up their child. I use dismissal as a time for a quick hello, to say something positive, or to personally invite parents to events that will be happening. #pln365
Q2) What do you see as the biggest obstacle to parent engagement in your class, school or district?
What have you done or what can you do to overcome these obstacles and encourage these parents to be more engaged in your class, school or district?
#PLN365
Q2) What do you see as the biggest obstacle to parent engagement in your class, school or district?
What have you done or what can you do to overcome these obstacles and encourage these parents to be more engaged in your class, school or district?
#pln365
As a parent, I think the biggest obstacle is limited ways to approach family engagement. It's measured as numbers at an event, without reconsidering the nature of the event. It's throwing up hands instead of looking at family engagement a whole new way. #PLN365 A2
Q2) What do you see as the biggest obstacle to parent engagement in your class, school or district?
What have you done or what can you do to overcome these obstacles and encourage these parents to be more engaged in your class, school or district?
#PLN365
A2: making them feel completely comfortable at your campus...it has to be a “we” mentality. Not you or us. Offer parent classes to help them learn technology or get involved in PBL with their child. #PLN365
A1) Noticing their presence...just greeting! Hello in the morning. Encouragement to participate in events. Invites to PTO mtg. We used Class Dojo as a communicator last year. Our new teachers use Dojo or similar apps to connect. #pln365
A1) Sometimes I will send a signed letter home for something that is positive and parents/students still like posting it on the fridge :) and FB! #PLN365 Love bringing the letter to the student in class before they go home!
A2- for me, there is a language barrier. It’s difficult to reach out for little compliments or concerns. I started asking colleagues to help me translate a sentence or two to maintain communication #pln365
Been trying to get staff on board with this but have had a hard time. I enjoy telling the stories of my colleagues though not just my own. @MsDavidson16 is new to our school and I am happy she is on Twitter to share our message. #pln365
A2: an obstacle can sometimes be that parents become too comfortable and "too" involved. I like to allow my teachers to teach and to do what they do best, but some parent involvement is certainly beneficial to the school! #pln365
A2: Not fully taking advantage of opportunities to maximize turnout. A full celebration of the whole child instead of just focusing on one specific area. #pln365
A2: Seeing teachers as "better" than they are. Poverty. Poor school experience, themselves.
Done? Give them my cell number. Share pictures of their kids at school. Tell them that they know their child better than I ever will and I need their help. #PLN365
A2) in my experience obstacles to engagement stem from when events are taking place and work/childcare conflicts. Sometimes parents can’t attend because of these issues. It would be great to have info on demand so it can be accessed whenever #pln365
A2 Can be time or access to tech if that is used, I have sent surveys home to find out parent preferences for communicating, and made sure to be mindful of those that prefer calls, rather than email, or at certain times of day #pln365
A2: As a few others said, it is meeting them where they are at, be it in person, by phone, email, carrier pigeon, or Morse code. My students and parents know my email is on my phone and if I'm not busy, I will respond quickly. #pln365
You're absolutely right. Listening is so important. From just hearing parents, we needed to simplify and streamline our communication. We're trying to do that! But, we had to start listening! #PLN365
A2 It seems at the HS level, parents are not as involved. Throughout the year my parent contacts are 250+, many of them positive, but many of those do not get a response. Persistence is key. Kinvo, adopted for the last quarter, makes it easier to get a response. #pln365
A2b My school brainstormed ways for all parents to help, not just during the day, or for long periods. We love having parents come work with kids, but we also gave the options of walking the kids to/from school, tending the flower beds, & cutting lamination from home. #PLN365
#pln365 A2 By making parents aware of as many ways that I am accessible and then being accessible really helps build the relationship. Be prompt in return communications and be positive.
A2: Parents not having time. Many are single parents working multiple jobs and raising multiple kids.
Provide opportunities, bring engagement to them on their time, provide constant updates even if responses don't come back. They still might be reading them. #pln365
A2 An obstacle is time. Parents are busy. We need to open the schools up at all different times during the day. We also can share info in different ways for all parents. #PLN365
A2) There's no pick-up at our school. All students go home on the school bus. It means that we don't see parents coming to school daily to pick up children. Makes it hard to build relationships... :( #pln365
Q3) Promoting and understanding different cultures, recognizing and addressing language differences and welcoming all families positively impacts family involvement.
How are you bridging racial, class and cultural differences in your class, school or district? #PLN365
I don’t have a homeroom so I try to engage with parents in a variety of ways. I go 2 both levels of BTS nights, I send home a paper newsletter and introduce myself: my qualifications/Education, my program & goals. I email the link & I use @Seesaw to get parents into class #PLN365
Q2) What do you see as the biggest obstacle to parent engagement in your class, school or district?
What have you done or what can you do to overcome these obstacles and encourage these parents to be more engaged in your class, school or district?
#PLN365
A2: Making opportunities to connect accessible to all. We really need to think more outside the box in our timing and our offerings, last year we asked a parent what they would want to attend & when. It really opened my mind to my own misunderstandings. #allin4NB#PLN365
Q3) Promoting and understanding different cultures, recognizing and addressing language differences and welcoming all families positively impacts family involvement.
How are you bridging racial, class and cultural differences in your class, school or district? #PLN365
A2. In my district I think a big obstacle is the language barrier. I’ve tried to address this by asking students and work colleagues for help translating any materials I send home, and I’ve been dusting off my rusty college Spanish with @duolingo#pln365
A2 Lang. Barrier - I find once my parents know I speak Spanish they are more willing to come in. Even when I don't speak the same language as my students I always make it a point to have someone to translate and to learn phrases. They appreciate it and show up. #pln365
A2: Sometimes it's no access to internet or no consistent phone. Sometimes language barrier. Sometimes home schedule challenges or Maslow related. To address this, we send info home using as many methods/modalities in order to reach everyone. Also try to include Eng/Span #pln365
A1. Part 2? Now in PD, I think my role is to keep looking for and offering learning on ways for staff to communicate with parents. We have done workshops on Google Classroom, Bloomz, Weebly, Smore, Instagram, etc. #PLN365
A3: My families know, from the get-go, that I don't se color, religion, socio-economic status. I see PARENTS who only wants what best for their kids. #pln365
Yes, a true partnership is needed. Ask questions. Understand their views. Great resource on surveys and reflection questions https://t.co/u8IO6SBpTP#PLN365
A3) We welcome all questions regarding school routines (some parents haven't been to school themselves), academics, and student well-being. And we have a Vietnamese translator at all of our get-togethers with parents. #pln365
A2) Parent work schedules, teacher time to fit it all in & increased attention on security has led to less opportunities for parents to physically come into the building than in the past. We've gotten creative with evening events, social media posts, calls & letters, etc. #pln365
A3: building those relationships is the key. We are all in this together and once they actually “see” this at work it’s so much easier. You must invite parents regularly and make positive phone calls, send emails, etc. We make it hard, but it’s simple. #PLN365
A3 This is an area of growth for us - we have a Diversity assembly for our school and we learn from our own parents with diverse backgrounds thru staff PD.
A3 This is another reason to sit down and listen to your parents. I'm sure they would appreciate the effort made to understand their culture and how it fits into your classroom culture. #PLN365
A3. 3D lesson design is big with NGSS, but @dr_monaghan just introduced me to 5D instruction that weaves cultural competence into science lessons. I’m currently planning a culturally responsive immune system lesson cycle using @STEMTeachTools resources to pilot this year! #pln365
A2) It's been a challenge connecting with parents who have difficult schedules, may be single parents, don't speak the language, can't make regular school events. Still trying on this one...advice anyone?!?! #PLN365
A3: Celebrate diversity! I've had Ss describe present work in Spanish while someone translates in English for the class. Last year we used translation software for worksheets. Parents of ELL Ss see and hear about this from children then are more likely to try engaging us. #pln365
Yep! Every classroom teacher has a Dojo page and specialists (ESL, art, music, PE, etc) are able to contribute. It's a new initiative this year to increase teacher-parent communication and it is going great so far. #PLN365
Yes! I was just reading in Lead with Culture by @JayBilly2 (GREAT read btw!), how even if everyone is not on twitter (yet!), they will benefit by those who are participating and share their learning. Maybe they'll even be encouraged to give twitter a chance! #pln365
In reply to
@rnjteach, @MrsVC3, @MsDavidson16, @JayBilly2
A3 Kinvo helps with that. It translates messages to the chosen language and then tranlates the answers. Parents are understandably more comfortable using their own language to communicate. #pln365
Wow, that's awesome. Can you share any ways that you involve the parents that may be single parents, have little ones at home, struggle to speak the language? Any advice is appreciated. #PLN365
This is huge. I correct colleagues when I hear them say, parents don't care. They DO!! Often mom/dad are working several jobs or don't have the transportation to attend school functions or have to make those tough choices. No judgement..support! #pln365
I agree- I’ve done some research via surveys and found that parents are unaware that they have input in their child’s education. Also, that playing a role in their school and community is a form of parental involvement- it’s not just checking their folders every night.
Q4) Great work tonight! Thank you for your thoughts, your insights and for helping all of us to evolve as educators. For the last question, fill in the blank.
If I had all my students’ parents in the same room, I would tell them __________________. #PLN365
A3: Our EL teacher has kids create presentations about the country they are from and share with others. We also invite P’s in for workshops to teach them about school here and to learn about their cultures. #pln365
A3. Offering learning. Understanding Asian Culture, Entry to Equity, ELL topics, and Building Bridges with the Community are some of our recent offerings. #PLN365
Q4) Great work tonight! Thank you for your thoughts, your insights and for helping all of us to evolve as educators. For the last question, fill in the blank.
If I had all my students’ parents in the same room, I would tell them __________________. #pln365
A3: I teach in a diverse district. I say I don't see color. I want all of my families to feel welcome to communicate and visit with any concerns. In my classroom I am sure to pronounce names correctly as well as have a culturally diverse library. #PLN365
The second half of that is most important. I've heard "My door is always open" enough times. Meaningless by itself if we don't SEE you, if we're the ones having to knock on the door. #PLN365
A1) I make it a point to try to let everyone know we have an open door policy. This is supported by being visible and engaging with family members daily. #pln365
A3) One example - my PTO is planning a new international night this year to honor all of the cultures in our school. We’ll sample foods, trade recipes, share information with one another, etc. We all have something special to share! #pln365
I am focusing on equity and thinking outside the box (such an overused term) to be mindful of making sure that all families and students feel a part of the Whitman community, and the Washington Township community. Our theme of #colorwhitmanwithkindness encouraged students #PLN365
I'd love to schedule a live chat w/another school (during a staff meeting or PD perhaps), come up with questions & a special hashtag, & use it as opportunity to teach ppl how to use Twitter/Tweetdeck, & show them all the fun and learning! :) #pln365
A3: Asking families and using their input. Last year we discussed, “The Day of the Child” which is a customary event for many of our families. I live in the community I work in so I am learning everyday, and I won’t stop working hard for my community. #PLN365#allin4NB
A4 That “it takes a village to develop a great school “ and “we may disagree at times on certain aspects but what we can agree upon is we all want what is best for your child” #pln365
Q4) Great work tonight! Thank you for your thoughts, your insights and for helping all of us to evolve as educators. For the last question, fill in the blank.
If I had all my students’ parents in the same room, I would tell them __________________. #PLN365
A3) Google translate helps families to stay in the loop! Great way to show parents that you care enough to try to communicate in their native language. :) #pln365
A3 Representation matters. Making sure my students see themselves in the books we read and bring topics that are relevant to them. I always tell my students I celebrate all holidays and religions. I use morning meetings to learn about & celebrate our cultures/ traditions #pln365
I am focusing on equity and thinking outside the box (such an overused term) to be mindful of making sure that all families and students feel a part of the Whitman community, and the Washington Township community. Our theme of #colorwhitmanwithkindness encouraged students #PLN365
A4: I am crazy FOR your child, I believe in them, and I will do all I can to help protect/teach them while they’re with me. If you need something, please never hesitate to reach out - I welcome your questions!! #PLN365
A3) We celebrate our differences. We are also becoming more "comfortable with being uncomfortable" talking about differences Students may see topics through the news and we discuss. PTO is a great place to promote diversity #pln365
A4) If I had all my students’ parents in the same room, I would tell them ... the more we are in this together, the more we will bring out your child's AWESOME! #pln365
A4: I would tell them that each of your Ss have a voice in this classroom regardless of language, economic status, ethnicity, etc. Their learning experience will be made personal and enjoyable which is why ALL can succeed. #pln365
A4: Your children are my second family other then my own. Know that I want them to feel safe, comfortable, and successful in my classroom and in our school community. #pln365
It can be hard. Or I'll say something and then you get the pitiful look or the "poor them" look. Parents are doing the best they can; they don't want to be pitied. They want us to do our best job and partner with them. It's up to us to show them how #leadership#pln365
A3: Been taking Spanish classes for 2 years now. I'm determined. Coming in handy w/Ss, parents, families. Used it during K home visits, 1st day, have done SEL lessons in Span, & my Ss who did this w/me last year, already asked if we could do Span lessons again this yr! #pln365
A4: I would tell them all that in a world of data and tests, we are still here and remain steadfast to educating their children academically, but also to be GOOD CITIZENS.The "tiny moments" in life (quoting @MissCampbell__) are what makes up our tapestries! #whitmanwtps#pln365
What an awesome conversation tonight about family engagement. Thank you @NeelDesaiBA for hosting #PLN365 ... so much for me to think about, digest, and make happen now. Thanks to all for so sharing so many great thoughts and ideas.
A1- Building relationships with family is critical when developing a welcoming school culture. Keeping parents informed using multiple platforms to communicate helped welcome our families into the new school yr. #pln365#relationshipsmatter#communicate#inclusiveandwelcoming
Q1)Research has found that the best predictor of student success is the level of family involvement. Children benefit when families are included in multiple ways.

A4. Thank them for the priveledge of teaching their amazing children. Ask what their goals and aspirations are for their children; and then ask how I can best support their children to help them reach these goals! #pln365
If I had all my students’ parents in the same room, I would tell them I am a parent of a child in this district too, I will advocate for you and your children. You deserve it. #PLN365#allin4NB
A4: If I had all my students’ parents in the same room, I would tell them I am a parent of a child in this district too, I will advocate for you and your children. You deserve it. #PLN365#allin4NB
Thank you to @PaulONeill1972 for your guidance and for giving me the honor to host #PLN365. Appreciate you my man!
Well done everyone! Love the thoughts and the great conversation. Keep this up and continue the chat with your colleagues tomorrow. Thank YOU!! #PLN365
Thx @NeelDesaiBA for tonight's #PLN365 conversation. It's such an important topic. No matter how hard we work, or how well intentioned we are, we can't do this alone. Strong home/school partnerships are necessary!
They do appreciate it! Ss & parents! Our ELL families are awesome. They want to help their children. Now that we have more Span speaking staff (I am a "SLL"), we are working to break barriers! :) #pln365
Not much better than that. When @kwboyce and I met with each fifth grader last year individually, it was amazing to hear their goals, aspirations, problems, etc. Talking with students one-on-one is very powerful, you're right @MsSivori#PLN365
The next time you see your parent community, tell them your answer to Q4. Continue to engage and continue your good work! Each of you are amazing! Well done! #pln365
Okay time to hit the road again! 🚗Thank you everyone for making my first ed chat a great one; can’t wait for next time! And thank you @NeelDesaiBA for hosting! #pln365
A4) I understand the privileged is to serve my families. In addition to that, I understand that schools are seen as microcosms of society and the best way to create change is to plant the seed of #Diversity#Equity and #Acceptance within our children. #pln365
I love when students loop or I have them for a different class. The relationship already exists and they help break the ice with the new students. #pln365
Can't usually loop in the traditional sense. Had Ss last year for Algebra 2 and a couple of them this year for English 4. Also have a S I know just from saying hi in the hall. Doesn't matter how a relationship begins. #pln365
A2- I think the greatest challenge we face is time. Some parents work multiple and are unable to attend events based on those commitments. We need to be work together to find opportunities for these families to still be active in school community. #pln365
Q2) What do you see as the biggest obstacle to parent engagement in your class, school or district?
What have you done or what can you do to overcome these obstacles and encourage these parents to be more engaged in your class, school or district?
#PLN365
Just make them welcome in the room as much as possible -- that's the most important message. And the "room" can be virtual. Say it through that action that you value families as partners. #PLN365
Q4) Great work tonight! Thank you for your thoughts, your insights and for helping all of us to evolve as educators. For the last question, fill in the blank.

Ughhh....When there’s so many great Twitter chats going on at once and you accidentally stumble upon the wrong one....It ends up being a great one, but you missed the one you were waiting for all week. Ughhh. 😜 #PLN365
A3: Celebrating our differences and honoring our Diversity. Our district holds yearly International Nights which gives families an opportunity to present and educate about their cultures and learn from others as well. #pln365
Q3) Promoting and understanding different cultures, recognizing and addressing language differences and welcoming all families positively impacts family involvement.
How are you bridging racial, class and cultural differences in your class, school or district? #PLN365
