A2: I knew I wanted to be a school counselor when I was working with students who had dropped out of school. I wanted to be someone who helped them before they felt they had to leave school #scchat
A2 I have terrible memory of my past, but I think it was about my 6th yr of teaching HS Science. I found myself enjoying my talks with students more than the teaching. I felt their highs and lows and wanted to spend more time with that part of them. #scchat
A1: I love being a school counselor because I am planting seeds for the future! i am making a difference and can see it in every smile that I pass! #SCCHAT
A2: I knew when I did some career counseling of my own. Also reflecting back on those who had major impacts on me, and one was my elementary school counselor who made a huge and lasting impression in my life. I can still reach out to her! #scchat
A2 I honestly know that I never even THOUGHT of being a school counselor during high school or college or even when I first started teaching. I thought HS Science was my forever job. #scchat
A2: Christina was a student in my 4th hour World History class who stayed after class to share her struggles every day becuase the "Guidance" Counselors were designated paper pushers. I sought out grad school programs to help all the Christina's in the world. #scchat

Great question A2: I knew i wanted to be a helper in a way that allowed me to connect with students in a way I could not as a teacher. Other counsellors encouraged me to get my Masters and so I did! #scchat
A2: I earned my journalism degree and wanted to pursue my master's degree but did not need it in that field to work. I asked myself what's the next thing you love to do? HELP people. My adviser for Peer Ed Program encouraged me to apply for counselor ed - rest is history #scchat

I ❤️ being a #schoolcounselor! Even on snowy eLearning Days, I work from home collaborating with parents and reaching out to students. And, I get to sneak in some valuable PD! Thanks @ASCAtweets for the 1/2 off specialist trainings! @ISCA_IN#scchat#escchat
A2 I was a classroom teacher for 20 years and often found myself in the role of school counselor. I decided I wanted to help the Ss grow as a whole person W/O focusing on curriculum. #SCCHAT
#scchat A2: I happened to be at the right place at the right time, when Tammy Davis introduced me to the 🌎 of being able to combine education with 1-on-1 student relationship building! Helping students help themselves
A2: I was working in the mental health field w/ adolescent girls. I enjoyed the time I spent with them & helping them learn to overcome barriers. Mental Health is not solid agencies always closing down so I decided 2 go where I would have security. HELLO SCHOOL COUNSELING #scchat

A3: Not a SC story since I am still in school but a time I felt most proud was when the student I had been helping to tutor passed her GED and walked for graduation #scchat
A2: Long story - 10 years ago my my oldest daughter was a runaway (at 14). After finding her (months later and 1/2 way across the country), we had a lot of support helping her and afterwards, I wanted to give back to kids like her but who didn't have the support she had. #scchat
Q2: I was a "Guidance" Intern in 11th & 12th grade, so I have been in this field a long time! However, we did not even have elementary school counselors so I was so excited when I found out I could work with elementary age when I interviewed for grad school! #SCCHAT
A3: Walking into a graduation party this last May and having the graduate point out his many awards and tell me that without me, none of those would have been possible. #scchat
A2 #scchat School counseling was the ONLY internship placement left in my grad program. I had no idea at the time how much I would enjoy the placement! I am so fortunate for that internship as it shaped me and my career path in immeasurable ways!

A3 It is every student that I get to witness growing and maturing through out high school. They leave much diff than they start. I like to think I play a part in that. #SCCHAT
A2: I knew I wanted to be a school counselor when I was teaching English in Korea. Was more interested in the background of S that impacted their learning than the material I was teaching. I'm also a lot better 1:1 vs managing a classroom. 😜 #scchat
#scchat A2 - After 13 years in the classroom, I was trying to decide between principal or counselor. The counseler role was a better fit. That was 14 years ago. No regrets.
A-3 Advocating for my program structure and having admin, teacher, and staff support! This week has felt awesome as I have spent most of my time on core curriculum, groups, and individual responsive services. #scchat
My greatest success is any time a child has come out to me or said the words, "I've never told anyone that before." That time I attended a high school graduation for a kid who was set to never become anything, and learned they were headed to college and third in class #scchat
#scchat A3:I received a call from a parent I worked with in year 2, and I no longer work at her daughters school but she 👀ed me up to ask my opinion bc she felt I had helped her child in the past and she needed me again #mademecry
A3: Five years after being at a new district, I was contacted by a student in my former district who went on a hunt to find me, just to say "thank you" for being the only person she considered who listened to her in middle school. #scchat
A3 So proud a week ago when one of my former @bchsspectrum students let me know he is starting a chapter at his university. Leadership going beyond my walks #scchat
A3: It's hard to choose just one, but something I'm particularly proud of is helping my students create a student led helping "club". Sort of like peer counseling, but with marketing and tech involved, too. #scchat
A3) Watching a student who had run away for over a month in 10th grade come back and graduate EARLY! One of the most "at risk" and "challenging" students - now in the National Guard. #proud#scchat
A3: My personal success happens each May... making it thru another year! ;) And each August, when I get to return to a job I love after a couple months of rejuvenation. #scchat
A4: Something that has surprised me as I go through my course work is how involved school counselors actually are with their students! I get to work with ALL students!!!! #scchat
A3: A Former student contacted me weeks ago, thanking me for all I did and helping her get through middle school which was a very difficult time for her. She is now flourishing in high school. Glad I discourage mom from homeschooling her and giving things time. #scchat
A3. A student who despite the odds realizes she did matter, despite wanting to end her life realized she could make a difference, found courage to try a new club & ended up become a leader. #scchat
A3: working with a resiliency small group of girls. At the end of the year one of the girls' mothers sent me a card that read "Thank you.. You gave me back her smile." I had no idea...she was so quiet in the group. #scchat
A3: I recently had a student stop by the office to thank me for taking time out of my day to work with him on study skills. Its the little things. :) #scchat
It took a long time to share...she's now a few weeks short of 25 years. She's a nursing student and a wonderful mother. It took a long time, but she got the help she needed. So many like her had no support...that's why I pursued school counseling. #scchat
A3: I started a Secret Kindness Agent program at me school to help promote kindness. “Agents” receive their mission at the beginning of the week and complete a Random act of Kindness. It’s been great. Students try and guess who the agents are. We reveal at the EOY. #scchat
A4: I'm continually amazed that after 35 years in education, I'm still learning and growing and I'll never know it all. And I love it more every day. How many people can say that about their careers? #scchat
A3: Last week I visited one of my feeder high schools and bumped into one of my former students. She gave me this huge smile and said "Ms. Garcia, I have all B's! You told me I could do it." Then my allergies started acting up. #scchat
A4: I'm still surprised sometimes by the things students will come to you for to get help with because they feel so comfortable and connected with you! #scchat
A3b- This week I had an eighth grade boy who has had trouble with regulating his frustration, which usually gets him in trouble, tell me that he is feeling much calmer after talking with me. He's also brought me two granola bars this week! Relationships are success! #scchat
A1. I love being a counselor because I help the kids see the best of themselves. Not only that but I get to work with their families and all the staff. All my days are different.
#scchat
A4: What STILL surprises me is the amount of students not knowing their own worth and potential. I would think parents would instill this in their kids...but I am here to help those who need help finding their WHY. #scchat
A3: Success story - had an incoming ECD student having upwards of 30-40 outbursts a day (in a 3-4 hour day). After lots of relationship building, she was having fewer than 5 a day within the first 9 weeks of school (in a full school day) #scchat
#scchat A4: NO! Working in a middle school & being a mom of a 2nd grader and a 4yr old-there’s not much parents, teachers Or students will say or do that surprises me! But I love it!
A4: I'm continually amazed that after 35 years in education, I'm still learning and growing and I'll never know it all. And I love it more every day. How many people can say that about their careers? #scchat

Q3 My Ss came 2 me scared, they prank called teacher Mrs. Heiser all day & the teacher was yelling at them on the phone for calling. I asked how they knew it was Mrs. Heiser. They said she answers the phone "Heiser." Reverse phone look up - they were calling Pfizer 💊 #SCCHAT 🤣
A3: Last week I visited one of my feeder high schools and bumped into one of my former students. She gave me this huge smile and said "Ms. Garcia, I have all B's! You told me I could do it." Then my allergies started acting up. #scchat
A4: whatever we think we know about a student, a family...we don't know the half. I learn new (and often surprising things) about my Ss every day. #scchat
A4: I don't know that much surprises me or shocks me any more, but I DO love how much it surprises students and/or parents that I'm either not surprised by something or that I totally get where the Ss are coming from. #iwasakidtoo#scchat
A4. Again, as a middle school counselor, nothing surprises me anymore! Actually, the randomness of each day still does. No joke, I've had a day where I tracked a missing shoe to an elevator, sat w/girl after a break-up, talked to a teen about suicide, & did lunch duty! #scchat
A3. I have a lot of good stories. This year one of the students who struggled with behavior a couple of years ago introduced me to his new classmates as the "feelings lady". #scchat
A4: Just a few weeks ago a student said, "What do I want to be when I grow up? Geez, I don't know. No one ever cared to ask me that before." Left me stunned! #scchat
A4: As an intern, I am amazed every day with how much a school counselor does throughout the day! Serious multi-tasking superpowers! :) I have no idea how it all gets done.. #scchat
Ummm..8th graders cant cut! I literally train my peer leaders in using scissors and glue each year for when they assist teachers with projects! #scchat
A4: how difficult it still is to hear a child wants to end his or her life. I tell my interns: it gets easier after years of practice to know what to say, but it NEVER gets easier hearing those words from a child. Even after a decade, it's the hardest part of the job #scchat
A4: I'm still in awe of how resilient school counselors are. This job is no joke and full of so many highs and lows. Every day is a roller coaster! #scchat
A2: After my son was born I had a new teaching perspective - a new understanding of in loco perentis. I knew I could do more as a counselor to take care of my students. #scchat
#scchat A4 - Yes and no. I have seen just about every situation, so no surprises. Still amazed, stunned what kids deal with daily. Don't ever tell me kids aren't resilient.
A4: Everyone is being all stoic and serious for their answer and I was talking about student's not being able to use scissors. I tried to think of a different answer, but yeah, I'm still stuck on the scissors. Oh well! #scchat
A4: Everyone is being all stoic and serious for their answer and I was talking about student's not being able to use scissors. I tried to think of a different answer, but yeah, I'm still stuck on the scissors. Oh well! #scchat
This is just so indicative of our profession. It both the prophetic and bizarre that keep us going! And sometimes both happen with in minutes of each other. #scchat
A4: Everyone is being all stoic and serious for their answer and I was talking about student's not being able to use scissors. I tried to think of a different answer, but yeah, I'm still stuck on the scissors. Oh well! #scchat
A5: I make a goal to use at least one new tech tool or resource a year. This year, I have used #GoogleClassroom for career cluster lessons. The kids love the technology and I love how easy it is to use. #scchat
A4: What surprises me is how many people still do not know or understand our role. It is our job to promote what we do and educate our stakeholders the importance of the profession. #scchat
A5: I had a goal to quietly transition to my new school and observe, learn, and take things in. I've transitioned successfully, but I can't say I've just observed... #makingwaves#oops#scchat
A5. One of my goals was to have the kindness rocks project at school. We got a donation of rocks a couple of weeks ago and I finally bought the paint supplies today. I am so excited! #scchat
A5 A goal I had this year was to incorporate more technology in our dept to reach more stakeholders. I have grown, but have a long way to go. Hard to make new habit. #scchat
A4: What surprises me is how many people still do not know or understand our role. It is our job to promote what we do and educate our stakeholders the importance of the profession. #scchat
A3. I literally worked in the BROOM CLOSET when I was a school counselor in Massachusetts. I'm very good at coming out of the closet. @NACAC#scchat@ASCAtweets@CorwinPress

A5: Goal this year to use more data and advocate for help with testing responsibilities. I started the year creating graphs of discipline data spiking last year during test season to advocate for help so counselors can counsel more. Using Google Forms for pre/post group #scchat
I had set a goal to try some alternative therapy classes this year- I’ve tried drum circles and hooping but I want to try some more art therapy training #SCCHAT
A5: To become more involved on our state governing board. Also revised the curriculum for my Academic Development class using Hillbilly Elegy as the text. Class goal done, leadership in process. #scchat
A5: my goal for this year was to be ableto see more kids 1:1. I’m doing better than I thought I would and I need to do better at self care now, but I just can’t turn a kid away!! #scchat
#scchat A5: I have 2-1-(County) which is to run 50% more groups and 2-(challenged by my admin @NickNapolitano7 ) be more consistent! I get caught up in putting out little 🔥 but if I take the ⌚️& be consistent I will accomplish more!
#scchat A5 The biggest tech tool I use regularly this year is a 168-hour-grid. Sunday night, I break down my week into 30-minute segments. Turns a reactive day into a proactive one. So effective.
A5: to continue to love what I do making every child who crosses my path know that they matter and I am here to help them #scchat Taking the time to do things that matter to me and to let go of all the things that don’t
A5. My professional goal this year is to keep learning, growing, trying new things and to not be hard on myself when things don’t go as planned. Try try again! #scchat
A5: My goal this year is to implement with fidelity a Tier 2 system where Ts would understand and know the process of getting kids in to interventions (CICO, SAIG groups, etc) #scchat
A5-Starting in a new building, my goal was to focus on relationships and connecting with students and staff. I feel much closer to those in my building. I still need to put myself out there with a few! Also, building a program. I'm excited to grow my program next year! #scchat
A4: I'm surprised every single day. The resilience of my students surprises and amazes me. How the surliest kid can give me the side-eye one moment and then write me the loveliest note because I listened. And I surprise myself because I keep going back for more :-) #scchat
A5: As I have learned from my principal (@PrincipalUMS ), it's best to try to change only one or two big things a year. This year, I was trying to streamline certain processes and make myself more visible/accessible to Ss. Would still like to do more time tracking. #scchat
A5 @ecmmason is the inspiration 4 my goal! I teach @ the univ level & have been infusing more school counselor techniques into my flipped classroom. My Ss enjoy that they r learning & gathering strategies! Flipping has pushed me out of my comfort zone, which is a good! #scchat
A5: This year's goal: try Hip Hop Cypher small group inspired by @Ianplevy at #ASCA17. Still trying to motivate my Ss to write lyrics though. I think they're scared. They wanted an example...gave them one of mine (backfired)... they think its 2 good & they can't do it.#scchat
A5: One of my goals this year was to welcome and work to build relationships with ALL new students. I sent all new S's postcards welcoming them to OHE, met each one, and need to still have our mid-year luncheon and end of year breakfast that I have in the works. #scchat
A5: A personal goal was to partake in more PD and create my own website and blog. A school goal was to have more counseling groups. I'm happy to say I'm exceeding in all goals! #scchat

A5: Since I'm new in my position and coming in mid-year, my goal is to meet all of my students 1-1 before the year is over. I've already met a few and am planning on meeting all of them to help them register for highschool! #scchat
A5: To implement Restorative Circles to foster a positive school climate and to restore relationship and to decrease unwanted behaviors.. Running 2 Restorative Groups with great feedback from students and staff!! #scchat
Advocate for educational equality in technology. Inspire by #NCWITC4C. Still have lots to learn. Oh. I can be a just a little unapologeticly aggressive with my "advocacy" 🙃#scchat
A7: Try to gain experience at every level. They can be so different. Learn self care early on. Don’t beat yourself up for things that are out of your control. Find a good support system and know when you might need help yourself. #scchat
A7: Do everything in your power to help your students at work, but when you go home, take care of yourself and those in your life who will remain when the career ends. #selfcare#bepresent#boundaries#scchat
#scchat A7: don’t be afraid to ask for help-we donor have to be the experts all the time! There are enough of us out here willing to help each other-and our kids deserve the best 100% of the time! And take care of yourself!
A7: My advice for new counselors would be to practice self-care. It's difficult to hep others with an empty cup. Love yourself while loving what you do! #scchat

The work is never all done ....you get to stopping points ....and leave it and rest ....and start fresh! You learn to accept some things still need to be finished! #scchat
A7. 1. Keep growing-we can only help our Ss if we use best practices. 2. Advocate for our profession. 3. Keep data-start small. 4. Consult & collaborate with other SCs as much as possible. 5. Self care is vital-not a luxury. #scchat
A7: My advice for new counselors would be to practice self-care. It's difficult to help others with an empty cup. Love yourself while loving what you do! #scchat
A7: Connect with other counselors! Find people you can turn to when you feel unsure, because you will need that support a lot. Don't be afraid to reach out. We're all still learning. #scchat
A7. Taking care of your own mental health is important. As a helper, it can be hard at times to give to yourself. We tend to give our energies to everyone else, but we can't help others without helping ourselves first! Balance is important! #scchat
A5: A personal goal was to partake in more PD and create my own website and blog. A school goal was to have more counseling groups. I'm happy to say I'm exceeding in all goals! #scchat
A7: you don’t have to know it all, you just need to know who to ask. When you’ve had a tough session, make sure you know how to take care of yourself....and don’t be afraid to call and talk. Sometimes we hear the hardest things and we need someone to listen #scchat
A7: Stick with it. Take time for yourself. Always. Don't check email at home. Ever. Please. Make connections with other SCs early and often. Your Twitter PLN is some of the best support you can have. #scchat
@counselorPCE and @ecmmason thank you both for such great questions and the opportunity to share!! I thoroughly enjoyed my first #scchat I can’t wait for another one!
A7 Know that there is no light at the end of the tunnel. School Counseling is a long tunnel illuminated by the lights of students along the way. #scchat
A7: Be present during your internship. Really soak it all up. Observe everything you can in your first year. Connect to and earn the respect from staff first and foremost. Be visible, walk lunch rooms and show kids they can trust you. #scchat

A5: #scchat my big goal for the 2017/18 academic year was to expand my PLN. Thanks to consortiums like this on Twitter, I am learning tons and likewise, achieving tons!
A7: Realize you can't do everything at once. Figure out the needs of your building & build a program from there. Use your PLN as a resource! We want to help!!! Also, take it day by day and know that you are doing important work! #scchat
A7: Consult! Consult! Consult! - Don't stop learning once you are working...keep reading, keep going to PD. - Eat lunch! (You do NOT have to skip lunch everyday to do this job!) #scchat

A7: Make the time to be visible so kids know you! 2. Be organized! With the many roles we play, and so many things thrown at you, you have to be ready! #scchat
A7: Glean on the support of your colleagues, realize all can't be done in one year, pick one thing and be good at it, self-care, remember that you don't have to have all the answers, build relationships with your Ts and parents, and have fun! #scchat
A5: One of my goals for this year is to use more data to continue to advocate for the things that bring value to our counseling program. SCUTA has been great and I review things weekly to see what I need to adjust. #scchat
Q7. Think about your job search the minute you apply. Make sure you are creating experiences in your practicum and internship that focus on FOUR domains with evidence of success: academic, career, college, and social-emotional. @Nacac@ASCATweets#scchat@CorwinPress.

A7 Try to keep a growth mindset for yourself as well as Ss. You will never have ALL the answers. Collaboration is key to see other perspectives. Listen to the Ss voice. #SCCHAT
A7: Use your strengths & talents... if you're an artist - use art, if you're a musician - use music, if you're writer - write, if you're an athlete - use sports.... be yourself, be genuine and connect that with your students! #scchat
