Hey, ! I'm Samantha, 5th grade in FL.
Hi! I'm Matt, a 5th grade teacher from Alabama.
We'll be using the Q1 (Question 1) and A1 (Answer 1) format.
Remember to include the hashtag!
Hey ....Scott from Long Island NY, teaching 5th grade in our middle school
Hello ! Tim from Frontenac, Kansas.
I'm Paul Solarz, a 5th grade teacher from Arlington Heights, IL. Great topic tonight !
Q1: What behaviors do you observe in students with a fixed mindset?
Nathan, I am here because is so dreamy
A1 FM students see that there is only one solution to a problem and if it doesn't work get frustrated easily
A1: Quick to give up, easily frustrated.
A1:With this mentality, Ss can be pessimistic about learning, can categorize themselves as smart/dumb, can lack drive to be better
A1: I have 1 this yr. Doesn't take criticism well. But when he gets it- you bet he gets it. & the whole world has to know!
Ss learn a fixed mindset from adults. We see it when they just give up or won't take chances.
A1 they can't see past their blinders
A1: Ss dread going to math because they're "no good at it." Assume they will not understand before class starts.
Hey Jason in Syracuse. 23rd year in 8th grade science. Going to be a fly on the wall.
A1: That they do not like a challenge or a problem that they do not understand. Better to be quiet then try and be wrong
Jess from NJ, 4th grade teacher 😊 I'm going to try to pop in for as long as I can tonight. Great topic!
A1: Fixed mindset Ss give up easily or ask T questions about what to do immediately.
has everyone bought 22 copies of Paul's book or is that just me
A1: Ss w fixed mindset don't take responsibility for their own learning.
A1: Frustration, shutting down, lack of motivation and perseverance, negative self talk!
Howdy to the great folks of ! Got a great mobile learning story to share? Our proposal deadline is Feb. 8! https://t.co/FRv8Xt9MiD
A1: Ss learn a fixed mindset from adults. We see it when they just give up or won't take chances.
A1: They don't see the value of a struggle. Just today we had a convo about why we can't give up moments into a new challenge
A1 usually FM students wait for teacher to give them the correct answer. Sit and stew a little in frustration
A1: Fixed Mindset - Frustration, Giving Up, Focus on Outcome/Grades, Blaming, Shutting Down, Belittling others
A1: Part 2...I also find some feign boredom in an effort to hide from the challenge
Would love to hear what you said!
true. It's hard to get Ss out of that mindset
I see this too - unwilling to try something to problem solve. Jumping to teacher first... https://t.co/JzrV7ilZRY
A1: Fixed mindset Ss give up easily or ask T questions about what to do immediately.
A1: It's not just the struggling kids. Gifted Ss often have a fixed mindset because taking risks might result in less than an A.
Agree with this! Have colleagues who shut down when they don't get something like new tech. Want someone to do it 4 them.
A1 sometimes they can get snarky, but we all get a little snarky from time to time
Very common for them to come up to me with nothing in their notebook, etc. No STRATEGIES have been used.
A1 - Often, my fixed mindset students look for THE correct way to do something rather than try different ways that work for them!
Yes!! Faking that boredom to hide own struggles / engagement... https://t.co/khfwMaOtfN
A1: Part 2...I also find some feign boredom in an effort to hide from the challenge
Q2: What behaviors do you observe in students with a growth mindset?
Hey Paul when is the Authors of calendar coming out? I am saving a spot on my office wall for it?
A1: Afraid to make a mistake. Worried about what peers, teachers, and parents might think if they fail.
We often go to a read aloud"My Fantastic Elastic Brain" and remind Ss that we need to stretch our brain like any muscle
Hey Paul when is the Authors of calendar coming out? I am saving a spot on my office wall for it?
Easily Frustrated, Gives Up Easily, Sees Mistakes as Stupid. https://t.co/0jvIKMYBQP
Q1: What behaviors do you observe in students with a fixed mindset?
A2 Ss w a GM will frequently ask ?s. Take accountability for learning. Find multiple strategies to perform the problem
A2 failure is an option and a challenge. Sees multiple solutions to one problem
A1: Agreed... find it more with "higher level" kids.
A2: Love when my Ss high-five/cheer for other Ss in the class when they hit that roadblock. Shows that sense of belief/family.
I love that book! A repeated reading might revive some of my FM Ss! Thanks!
. Sometimes easier to say "I don't want to this/This is, dumb" vs " This is hard!"
Hi ! Saw your topic tonight and wanted to pass this along -> "What you need to know about growth mindset" - https://t.co/M1uMai6RcQ
Q2 They don't compare themselves to others. They just want to get better than they were yesterday.
I've heard great things about My Fantastic Elastic Brain to help foster https://t.co/6CBoAViQoY
We often go to a read aloud"My Fantastic Elastic Brain" and remind Ss that we need to stretch our brain like any muscle
A2: Ss who are excited for the challenge, who are excited when they discover an answer and dont want the Ts to tell them answers
Zach in Joplin, MO joining late.
My Fantastic Elastic Brain is AMAZING to help to foster. Use it every year.
I think we have 10 books published, probably 1 in the works, maybe you should be #12! Can't do a calendar w/out 12!
Ss w/ see struggle as productive. Eager to learn from Mistakes, try new things, experiment https://t.co/FcYiUUousW
Q2: What behaviors do you observe in students with a growth mindset?
A2: Mood isn't determined by grade. Want to learn as opposed to get an A. Not afraid of making mistakes.
A2 I love to hear things like "Can we do this one by ourselves?!" Says my Ss understand the material and appreciate the practice
for sure! Its looks cooler to say that and brush off work that is difficult
A2: "Fail Forward" mentality...I may not have gotten it yet, but I'll get there
Sorry! Jumping in late! Leslye Thiery, 5th grade teacher from Grand Forks, ND! Excited about this topic!
A2: - Resilience, Takes constructive criticism well, Embraces challenge, Focus on process, Eager for feedback
Well said! Wander what each S would say if I turned these into reflective Qs?!? https://t.co/epHGw5pDnQ
A2: Mood isn't determined by grade. Want to learn as opposed to get an A. Not afraid of making mistakes.
A2 - Our classroom is SO focused on feedback & improvement that most of my kiddos seek out constructive criticism on their work! :)
A2: Ss with a growth mindset look for new ways of solving problems. Remember that Ts also display fixed and growth mindsets.
Hi Leslye, Mark G. 5th grade T from Southern NJ, also stepping in a little late.
A2: Ss understand that learning is a process, not searching for "the right answer" but a solution. Open to constructive criticism
A1: Fixed-Finish and accept work as complete.
Mood independent of scores - definite sign of a ! https://t.co/FGdlL5JZTt
A2: Mood isn't determined by grade. Want to learn as opposed to get an A. Not afraid of making mistakes.
Yes! Love it when I hear "don't tell me!"
Love the use of the word "yet" Totally changes the meaning of a statement. https://t.co/pO8LZyG4sp
A2: "Fail Forward" mentality...I may not have gotten it yet, but I'll get there
Q3: What language can we use to reflect a growth mindset in our classrooms?
A2: SELF-DIRECTED! They don't stop when they hit the "ceiling".
Agreed! "The Power of Yet" .... amazing
Love these videos, we have watched the first 2 installments.
A2 Ss w a GM will frequently ask ?s. Take accountability for learning. Find multiple strategies to perform the problem
A2:Willingness to try something new.Understands that I may not get it the first time & that's ok because I'm going to keep trying.
Love this. What does an A really mean anyways? https://t.co/EKlEY7QcbS
A2: Mood isn't determined by grade. Want to learn as opposed to get an A. Not afraid of making mistakes.
Growth- determination to keep working, welcome feedback and keep at it.
A3: when it comes to language and mindset- follow Yoda "do or do not, there is no try"
A3: Effective effort terminology: use of strategies, feedback, focus, time. Ss need to practice and analyze this at beg. of year.
Our own modeling of a growth mindset is key - I agree! https://t.co/wLuPxC8a5z
A2: Ss with a growth mindset look for new ways of solving problems. Remember that Ts also display fixed and growth mindsets.
I am in process on 3 books in a couple difference directions. Can't decide which way
Yes! It truly changes everything.
A3: Need to use cross-curricular lessons that feed into 1 another. Shows "Hey! We don't just learn this to forget it right away!"
A3: Slight adjustments to the language and terminology we use makes a big difference with our Ss https://t.co/YNQfsykihR
A3: I think good questioning without concrete answers makes Ss dig deeper and challenge themselves
A3: I haven't mastered this...yet. I need to think about this in a different way.
how to the farther than out of the box
Too many kids see A as the goal & not the learning. Maybe reflective lesson Qs would help them realize our goal.
A3: One big change is moving "what, when" to "why & how". The process is the goal more than the end. We teach learners not robots
A3: Praising the behaviors that lead to success.
This indicates that our scoring system should also help us focus on growth as well. https://t.co/Pdl9C6IcrS
Love this. What does an A really mean anyways? https://t.co/EKlEY7QcbS
A2: Mood isn't determined by grade. Want to learn as opposed to get an A. Not afraid of making mistakes.
A3: didnt always seem natural coming out,but starting to, and good to give them words to lead the thoughts. https://t.co/2q2zh9pwd7
Q3: What language can we use to reflect a growth mindset in our classrooms?
Yes! Passion Time (Genius Hour) helps kids ask those tough questions that require deep research and thinking!
Teach from the heart and not from the book. This leads to lifelong learning opening windows forever
A3: When struggling: "Not yet, so.." "Let's troubleshoot this.", "What did you learn from this?" "Awesome - a challenge!"
When Ss are excited by challenge...they are growth mindset believers!
A3: I agree with "why." Ts look in the mirror. When you taught it that way, did you ask why?
A3: I love when my kids respond with "Challenge accepted"
A3 Speak positivity and encouragement into every possible moment
I'll let you know how it goes!
yes I agree. We call ours "Setting the World on Fire" and it makes them look deeper into subjects and what they learn
Today on a math pretest, Ss wrote "I don't know this yet" instead of leaving it blank...they are starting to believe
Q4: What resources can we use to help our students develop a growth mindset?
agree w not only analyze effective effort @ beg of yr but revisit throughout yr
Can't answer because don't know either! Ps don't want to hear about an A in conference, want to hear how child is doing
Q4: "The Most Magnificent Thing" is an awesome mentor text for GM
our first year of SBG - going well so far. big paradigm shift
I know - I was rather impressed! YET is the big word in my room these days.
A4: I think using us as Ts showing a good growth mindset, setting the class culture to be a safe place to explore, try and fail
My elem. moved to student-led conferencing with no letter grades. What an improvement.
A3: Along with word choice, change our tones. Stop stressing tests and stress effort and progress.
Ss led conferences coming up in Feb along w - should be great focus
A4: Provide students with platforms to tell their own stories. Teachers should not be the only ones who read student writings.
Awesome! We did the same. At first Ps were reluctant, but now better response & involvement from Ps and Ss. https://t.co/3g3SjeVaxo
My elem. moved to student-led conferencing with no letter grades. What an improvement.
for sure! That is how we look at it too!
Our tone really does indicate to our Ss what is important.
is now trending in USA, ranking 50
Thinking of moving in this direction, do you have any resources to share?
Q5: How has having a growth mindset helped you as an educator?
not YET! ha! putting it all together now. I'll keep you posted.
A4: Journaling, Blogs, Exit Slips helps Ss realize the lesson had a point and think about what is was. Show Ss what to work on.
A5: It got me on Twitter this summer and found awesome PLN's and twitter chats and all the pirate crews!
post targets for every lesson to keep all focused - Ss intro target and review target at end of lesson
A5: Keeping a focus on learning from the process - even if the lesson went badly. Shake it off, reflect, and go forward!
A5: has been a reflective process for me. Analyzed every word that I was saying to Ss. Eliminated the word "smart."
A5 - Keeps me moving forward.Striving to do my best work today. That is, until tomorrow.
A5: Having a growth mindset has made me a better listener. It's pushed me to make empathy THE priority in every context.
A5: That's assuming we have a GM. Guessing this group has more in that category than others. What about your colleagues?
A5: W/o growth mindset, I'd have give up on many things - including new tech. I train colleagues now. GMS helps you & those around
A5: It frees me to try new things. If I don't succeed I remind Ss I am a learner. Used it to try new mixed number multi strategies
5: Complacency is a killer! Wake up everyday trying and knowing you can learn more and be better! Our students are worth it.
Still have work to move to a more growth mindset in some areas myself. https://t.co/DDXEIqxyPu
A5: That's assuming we have a GM. Guessing this group has more in that category than others. What about your colleagues?
A5: having a growth mindset and being flexible are synonymous. How will you learn and grow wo learning and listening to others?
Very true! Twitter was confusing at first, scary and new. Now I love being able to connect to other great Ts!
A5: It made me question the status quo and look to improve and make changes and be bold and dive right in!
. Plus, people with growth mindset are more pleasant to be around... less grumpy... more patient!
Q6: What obstacles do we need to overcome to foster growth mindsets in students?
Yes! We have an agenda board and discuss it at start of every lesson.
so many great ideas and people as resources, it is hard to believe I didn't do this earlier!
Thanks for a great . Going to say good night a little early. Very motivational and inspirational. Cheers!
GM can be situational. I work with 1000s of Ts a year. Talk about tech integration and many become very fixed.
A6: negative self talk is a huge obstacle! https://t.co/AucDySFvLU
Q6: What obstacles do we need to overcome to foster growth mindsets in students?
I've found those targets to really help all of us stay focused I put Ss in charge of it this year and it's even better
A6: Traditional school. We aren't training factory workers like 1920s. We are guiding inventors, entrepreneurs, creators & dreamers
A6: Fixed point of view present within the system (parents/school-wide). GrMindset needs to become part of school/home culture
Love this. Too have noticed that I don't like using the word "smart." There are many kinds of smart.
A6: Ss can learn FM and it takes time to change what they have always heard. It can be completely diff from what they are use to
A6: Start internally. Model growth mindset as a T and they will see it. Do as I do AND as I say.
A6: My biggest obstacle is trying not to be frustrated with the FM behavior
true I think we all natural drift toward fixed. It's hard work to get to a
A6: We are also an obstacle at times. FM is so much easier to teach - model 1 method then enforce practice. We must push ourselves
I agree that in times of stress it is easy to revert to a FM. Good thing teaching isn't stressful.
it is! So much more effort and needing a flexible mind to make it work!
A6: Teach them that it's okay to not be perfect. Not everyone "gets" everything right away - learning involves work.
Yes! Let me tell you about your child's growth instead of why they made a B rather than an A.
for sure! GM in action I had a S sick this week, she took part with GHangouts so she didnt miss anything!
So true! That's why we need to create a safe environment for learners. Less stress!
Q7: What else do you want to know about fostering a in the classroom?
10 minutes until ! Our topic is blogging with students. We'd love to hear from you!
Have to cut out and put my lil guy to bed. Thnx and the crew for a great topic and chat tonight!
SO true! Class environment is key to Ss success! https://t.co/mduGylXSCF
So true! That's why we need to create a safe environment for learners. Less stress!
Love the "all" part. Yes, helps me stay on track too!
A7: How to get all sharholders on board with the fact that the journey to the answer can be more important then the answer
A7: What other strategies does everyone have for fostering in the classroom?
It sets the tone - helps me prepare and stay on task!
A7: How do we got those with a FM to buy into a GM mentality? That includes parents, teachers, and students?
Opportunites like this would be a start. Book studies are also great.
Thanks for a great discussion, everyone!
Thanks for joining this week! Make sure to connect with others tonight and grow your
