I love talking about Building a Positive Climate @cvarsalona#NYEDChat So jumping in. This is Barbara from Oakland, CA. I'm co-host of #rethink_learning, host my podcast, Conversations on Learning, and author. But always learning.
A1 It's good to meet with other departments to discuss various methods and materials for related topics. It gives us different perspectives. Ex: SS and ELA meet to find common ground. #NYEDChat
Thanks @cvarsalona for inviting me to #NYedchat! Balancing Twitter with making dinner at the moment and it looks like a topic I'd learn more about than teach, so I'll just chime in when I can!
A1: I think often Ts go into their instruction looking for only one predetermined answer or responses. We have to take into account the background & experiences others bring to the table. Their interpretation may be more spot on! #NYEDChat
A2 Professional discourse on theory, method, and practice is healthy as long as it is in a trusting environment where there is mutual respect? Respectful disagreement can often open doors to creative solutions that improve teaching and learning. #NYEDChat
A2: Teachers need to use empathy and consider the different perspectives students have. Each Ss is unique and comes with their own experiences, skills, knowledge, etc. Get to know them first. #Whatif Ts have Ss share what they know already instead of worksheets? #NYEDChat
A1: it makes me realize that the SIOP component ‘Building Background’ is so critical. As educators we must strive to learn the perspective of our Ss and use materials/lessons that teach ALL learners #NYEDChat
A1: When I walk in a classroom and a Teacher tells me they have never worked so hard, I feel they have teaching and learning backward. Students need to be the ones working the hardest. #whatif they co-design the learning with the teacher? #NYEDChat

A2: I think any time that our ideas result in healthy communication with others, it is a victory. We can share our views, justify our opinions, and listen openly to others. Aren't Communication & Critical Thinking part of our important "Cs" of education? #NYEDChat
A1: Respect ALL perspectives. Everyone has a story and experiences that have shaped their view. Dialogue about thinking. Teach critical thinking! #NYEDChat
A2: One of my mentors @unfoldthesoul always says: If 4 people in a room all agree, that makes 3 of them irrelevant! We often look at disagreement as an argument! Professional discourse is necessary to avoid status quo! #nyedchat
A3: Collegial conversations are needed when troubled by others who are doing something that doesn't benefit kids or the profession. We can confront with care only in cultures of trust where shared opinions and respectful disagreement are accepted. #NYEDChat
A1: We have co-taught classrooms at our school, so there's always an opportunity for differing opinions and perspectives, BUT it's important to make sure instructional outcomes for kids are aligned! #nyedchat (forgot the hashtag first time around!)
A1. The multi perspectives of a grade team or content team can provide ways for creating entry points for students. If adults see things differently why wouldn’t students? #NYEDChat
I love this! I like to say, we need the "problem posers" to help us make things work...disagreement helps us smooth the path before we walk it. #NYEDChat

Respectful discourse around theory & research can be incredibly meaningful for educators; but disagreement needs to be constructed upon other research/theory; not just opinions. I find that opinions often dominate our profession & that’s not a great thing. #NYEDChat
Q3: #NYEDChat How can we support our own beliefs and opinions without denigrating those of others? Or How can we "confront with care" when we really think someone is doing something that is not beneficial for kids or the profession?
A2: the disagreement has to be from a place focused on doing what is right for kids and must be done in a manner that appreciates others for their contributions even if they challenge our way of thinking.

A1: Teaching where the teacher is the only expert in the room isn't going to prepare our kids for their future or for NOW. Our perspective as Teachers as experts needs to change. Teach less, listen more. #NYEDChat
On the other hand, when Ss see us willing to knock ourselves out to help them as individuals credibility can be built. The danger is in building a feeling of entitlement there. Balance needed. #NYEDchat
Glad to be here Carol! #nyedchat Too often; and I have been guilty, we take someone disagreeing with us personally..Irony is we ask kids everyday to do this, but sometimes as adults we don't model too well!
A2: If disagreement is around bad pedagogy or "empty calorie" lessons, then it's in the Ss best interest to deal with it at a grade/ school level. Holding each other accountable is hard but has to happen. #nyedchat
A2: Disagreement is the agent of change & innovation. We have new technologies because some questioned the staus quo. We have cooperative learning because someone disagreed with rows of desks. Respectful disagreement can push education forward and innovate new pedagogy. #NYEDChat
A1: I love this image. It is illustrative of how two people can view the same thing in different ways. As an educator we need to be open to different perspectives. Students learn from us and we learn from our students. #nyedchat

A 3 Start a conversation with a person you feel is using practice that doesn’t help students. Share research, invite into your class & keep discussing. #NYEDChat
My sense is that you are correct. Dr. Sinanis. But it's tough when everything brands itself as "research-based." That's why something like @DTWillingham's book When Can You Trust the Experts? How to Tell Good Science from Bad in Education is really important. #nyedchat
A3: always honoring the other person’s value in the situation is key; I realize more each day how much I still need to learn so am open to having my mind changed #NYEDChat

A2. Blind agreement is never good as apathy & mailing it in sets in to a staff. Disagreements, when not personal attacks, helps staff grow. We always have disagreements on what data sources will be used to norm school practices. It keeps us fresh & away from stays quo. #NYEDChat
Reflaction: Action to take when working with a colleague who teaches differently than me=> Observe - Respectfully Discuss Viewpoints - Seek Common Ground! #NYEDChat
A3: We've started listening circles as part of PD this year and norming those sessions is an important part of separating the problem and the person. It's led to some a-ha moments...and some meaningful reflection. #nyedchat
By chance came by #NYEDChat I’m a big believer in listening to different perspectives. The bandwagon is the safety net, but the other POV challenges the status quo. Faige substitute teacher in Los Angeles.
A3: listen with an intent to learn not to be heard. Too many people want to give their opinion or thought as someone is finishing their thought. Not all conversations need an instant rebuttal.

Welcome to #NYEDChat Solomon. If we challenge the status quo with sound reasoning we can see creative solutions to empowering all as change agents. #NYEDChat
A2: I believe that professional disagreement is an avenue to growth and learning. We all have a tendency to believe that we are right until someone shares something to challenge our thinking. We ask kids to to this everyday. Shouldn't we do the same?#nyedchat
3 more minutes and counting for #NYEDChat tonight. It has been a fast chat indeed so I thank everyone who is here and of course @ritaplatt for her leadership tonight. We ask all to return to chat with us in the future.
A3: Respectful communication is key. If we believe in what we do, we should be confident in sharing our beliefs. Confronting another may be best achieved through asking Qs to gain insight. Perspective and background is important. #NYEDChat
Tyler I agree..also assume positive intent..instead of taking things personally, consider how the decision/change/new strategy could benefit others especially our students! #nyedchat
#nyedchat I am so grateful to you all for helping me think about respectful disagreement & how it can impact culture! Thank you @cvarsalona for allowing me to guest moderate. You are wonderful.
A3. Our beliefs hold a lot more weight when they are rooted in work and in professional texts. All too often Ts think that all ideas need to be these passionate speeches, but I know my ideas carry weight when tied to professional texts. It works for everyone. #NYEDChat
Q3: #NYEDChat How can we support our own beliefs and opinions without denigrating those of others? Or How can we "confront with care" when we really think someone is doing something that is not beneficial for kids or the profession?
Reflaction: We're doing learning walks and critical friend observations again this year - always leave my colleagues' classrooms in awe of them! Don't be afraid to open your doors, too! #nyedchat
A3: Confronting those who disagree with you is tough.
Respect is key. You should be confident and support your opinion, but you also need to be open to new idea.#nyedchat
I sometimes struggle w/this because the texts I read sometimes conflict with initiatives or the way things are done. For example, direct instruction has a very large effect size ala John Hattie, but isn't used that often where I work. #nyedchat

A3: I think this goes back to Q1. Value the other person’s experiences. Be kind and open to their assertions. Listen actively not just to respond. Look at facts, research, and qualitative data. #NYEDChat

https://t.co/whOHIOukyn Great chat tonight. Thanks @ritaplatt and all of our participants.
Q3: #NYEDChat How can we support our own beliefs and opinions without denigrating those of others? Or How can we "confront with care" when we really think someone is doing something that is not beneficial for kids or the profession?
Nothing is the be-all-end-all. I think the key is to be open that some kiddos respond well to it and some don't. Some teachers teach well with it and some don't. #NYEDChat
We have a staff of direct instructors and we are trying to break that traditional model. We have a school with high SWDs and ELLs. Direct instruction is not the be all end all
I love this, @JeremyDBond ! This year, my work is guided by this sentence, "Start with love, end with love." A focus on what we share is a great idea. #NYEDChat
