Hi Diana DaCosta, West Orange K-6 Technology Integration Specialist. So happy to be part of the 2nd #WO2Worldchat and watching our #WO2World PLN grow! Can't wait to solve the problems of the world on this chat! 💪🏼🙌🏼👊🏼
Hi #WO2WorldChat, I'm Kristy Lopez, I teach middle school art to #7thgrade & #8thgrade. I'm a Board of Director at @ArtEducatorsNJ serving as Youth Art Month State Co-Chair to advocate for Arts Education.
Our format will include 7 questions. Use A1 to respond to Q1 & remember to include the hashtag #WO2WorldChat
Q0: Are you ready? A0: Let's ROCK this thing! #wotweechers
A1: Finding effective ways to keep inattentive students on task. It seems like 1 day 1 thing works then the next day it is a completely ineffective strategy. #WO2WorldChat#RedwoodTweets
A1: #WO2WorldChat A current struggle or a consistent struggle I deal with as an educator is paperwork. I am a digital person & I believe it is easier to use the computer to save & transmit data. However, many are reluctant to do so & some students don't have access out of school.
#A1 In my current role my struggle is w/ T-Fear, T-burnout & defensiveness; a colleague or admin who's got a 'yea, but' rebuttal for anything outofthecomfortzone. In short, a lack of a growth mindset is my pervasive hurdle #WO2WorldChat#wotweechershttps://t.co/Mg4j9PvCVb
A1: I am currently struggling with management of larger groups of students, particularly my 5th graders in chorus rehearsal when I have the whole grade level! #WO2WorldChat
A1 Newbie to 5th=new curriculum Constant reflection on lessons & making changes for next year's students is frustrating at times Although I consider this a practice no matter how much of a veteran you are to a grade level, it has been my BIGGEST challenge this year #WO2WorldChat
A1: Currently struggling with Ss cleaning up effectively. Whether it's clay or paint, it seems like the messier the project the more intimidating the task of cleaning is. #WO2WorldChat#WO2World#wotweechers
A1: As a T every day is a new #struggle. But I think the biggest struggle is TIME! There is never enough in the day to get through all that we have planned. Especially at this time of the year, we are now struggling to fit it all in before June! #strugglebus#WO2WorldChat
Q1 A struggle I am currently having is students attending to each other and not the lesson. They are so involved with each other they miss many directions. I think the cold weather has been difficult! We are all ready for some sun! #WO2WorldChat
A1 #WO2WorldChat@artwithmslopez@MrsPRomanchuk As an Administrator I struggle with deadlines and paperwork. I am thinking that these were the same issues I had when I was teaching!
A1: grading is a problem I face in education- it is not the best way to provide feedback to my Ss and wish we could move in a different direction. #WO2WorldChat
A1. As a T my biggest struggle is struggling with time. There are so many teachable moments that ai would love to embrace. I find myself worrying that if I teach too much off the topic it will mess up my entire time line plans. 🙈#WO2WorldChat
A1 #WO2WorldChat I have 2 big challenges. Time ~ not enough time for all the school demands and a school / home balance. Time is truly a 4-letter word. And, students who don't read at home. UGH.
A1: Striking a good balance between squeezing all the curriculum in while also allowing ample time for my students to be creative, have fun, move around, and have constructive conversations and social interactions with peers. #WO2WorldChat
A1 One big struggle I have is making real connections w/ my Ss when our class only ever meets asynchronously via Blackboard. Miss that F2F connection. Have begin co-teaching with @MrBronke to try fill my need to stay relevant. #WO2WorldChat
A1: A consistent struggle that I am dealing with as an educator is conferencing with every student about their writing. I've found that I can't fix everything all at once, and that I need to choose 1 or 2 major things for us to focus on each time.
#WO2WorldChat#WO2World
A1: Time! There's so much to do, so much I want to do and just not enough of it. I try and cover the BIG things, and sometimes worry I miss the small things, that are the BIG things! It's a juggling act.
A2: #WO2WorldChat When faced with a problem, professionally, I work through it and set myself back on the right path by setting goals & redirecting my efforts. I don't panic because life happens. I just focus & find a solution to any problem I may have.
A2: I like to talk through my problems with colleagues who can help me brainstorm a solution, especially my fellow specialists (I'm looking at you, @misspayne2014, @jmatz_matz, and @GregoryArtists)! #WO2WorldChat
#A2 I usually consult w/ @dmdacosta13 or trusted colleagues; I seek info / research the internet continually, follow a host of wayshowers; & I meditate - which really gets my head right. This helps the most wh I lose perspective #WO2WorldChat
A2: Taking time to reflect & talking to fellow #RedwoodRockets & giving myself time to work through a problem rather than reacting immediately helps me get back on the right path and solve the problem. #WO2WorldChat#RedwoodTweets
A2: I try to be proactive and face the problem directly. Ignoring it is not going to make it better. In education you have to be flexible - especially when working with a pull-out lesson schedule. #WO2WorldChat
A2: I anaylze what level of priority the problem is. Sometimes work backwards from what I want to accomplish, & what other way I can get there. Also reaching out for help. #WO2World#WO2WorldChat#wotweechers
Q2- To get through a problem that I am having I reach out to my coworkers, especially @Mrs_Lauricella , to talk through things and help me out. It is great to have a co-teacher that gets me! #WO2WorldChat
A2 When I have a problem, I resort to one of the following a) seek an experienced colleague's advice b) break it down and address it one step at time c) long deep sigh....
#WO2WorldChat
A1. As a new Principal, my current challenge is getting to know all our #RedwoodRockets as quickly as possible! Staff, students, & parents have all been very welcoming and demonstrated the strength of the Redwood community. #WO2WorldChat#Wo2World
#A2 - thank goodness for my team and school faculty that help me through with guidance, strategies and just being an ear for me during these rough days #WO2WorldChat
A2 I am a solver, a rescuer by nature, so my 1st reaction is always to think, "what can I do to help, to fix this?" I have to remember to slow down & ask for help. Sometimes patience is the "solution" #wo2worldchat
A 2 #WO2WorldChat@artwithmslopez@MrsPRomanchuk Reflect on options, try to think about outcomes, make a decision, ACT! Never be afraid to ask for help! Everyone needs a lifeboat now and again! Be one for somebody or hop in one!
A2: when faced with a problem at school I turn to my PLN and ask for advice. I learn so much from my PLN and am so thankful to have Ts I can call my friends. Can’t wait to keep growing this group!! @dmdacosta13@amypacifico3@DFerrera521#WO2WorldChat
I scheduled all my answers to come up on the #WO2WorldChat and nothing is appearing. Sorry to be out of the loop but it’s time to read with my kiddos. @msmariamartino@MsMindo2 maybe you can help me figure out what happened. #RedwoodTweets
A2 #WO2WorldChat Not gonna lie. I stress eat until I see the forest through the trees and can clearly see a way to work through my problem. Not the healthiest coping mechanism but it certainly works. LOL
A2: The best stress reliever during trying times is to find a colleague to laugh with! Helps to put things into perspective and to know that there are folks who know exactly what you're going through. #WO2WorldChat
A2: A current and consistent struggle I am dealing with as an educator is lack of time. The demands of my position have increased significantly in the last few years and it is difficult, and at times, impossible, to balance all of them. #WO2WorldChat
A2: When I'm faced with a problem professionally, I share it with some colleagues to get the perspective of other educators prior to attempting to solve it. This helps me to see if my solution to the problem makes sense or if I'm overlooking something. #WO2WorldChat#WOWorld
A1: A current and consistent struggle I am dealing with as an educator is lack of time. The demands of my position have increased significantly in the last few years and it is difficult, and at times, impossible, to balance all of them. #WO2WorldChat
A2- I prioritize the problem and take time to think through if I can and always bounce ideas off of Ts and fellow supervisors so problem is doved effectively and efficiently #WO2WorldChat
A3: When my 3rd grade Ss practice recorder, I like to have them work in groups according to which pieces they are working on. Group members all have a technical element they're responsible for monitoring so they can help their classmates improve their performance. #WO2WorldChat
A3: #WO2WorldChat Some ways that I strategically foster an environment in my classroom in which problem solving occurs without a pencil & paper is by having open dialogue. I talk to my students all the time about world events, working through problems & they like sharing ideas.
Q3: What are some ways that teachers can strategically foster an environment in their classroom in which problem solving occurs without a pencil and paper?
#WO2World#WO2WorldChat#wotweechers
A struggle I often have is the amount of students that are coming and going in my room. I feel like I am constantly reteaching lessons because Ss were pulled out for things. #WO2WorldChat
Good point - continuing to stay relevant when you step out of the class is a struggle. It's important to keep a finger on the pulse of the classroom and step in every once in a while! #WO2WorldChat
A2: I frequently seek support from my colleagues, particularly the other elem. counselors in the district. When very stressed/overwhelmed, it also helps me to stop, step back, take some deep breaths, and get reorganized before jumping back in. #WO2worldchat#mindfulness#support
A3 One thing I do to foster an environment for problem solving is to have both my students and myself reflect - on ourselves, our work, etc. #WO2WorldChat
A3: In music, problem solving comes with effort, practice, and exposure to more problems. Through playing different music and exercises on their instrument, Ss learn problem solving and improve their music literacy skills. #WO2WorldChat
A3 I encourage Ss to solve their personal problems using "I" messages (I feel...when you...because...I would prefer if you...) as well as prompts to agree/disagree respectfully. I have anchor charts posted around the room as reminders when Ss need to refer to them #WO2WorldChat
A3: I think it is SUPER important to "think aloud" consistently throughout the school day. Modeling problem solving aloud for my littles throughout the year helps them learn the language necessary to problem solve in real life! #WO2WorldChat
Q3- I try to have student work in partners or groups to try to problem solve. There are a few who shut down so I may do some problem solving on @Flipgrid or @Seesaw to have them respond in their own way. A lot of children open up and come up with their own ideas. #WO2WorldChat
A3: through conversations & discussions. Telling your Ss this is a problem, let's solve it together. Transparency is so important!
#WO2WorldChat#RedwoodTweets
A3: Creating a classroom of communication helps Ss problem solve. https://t.co/4TDXSXqtGH.OUT. I try to always think aloud to show students ways to think. One of my favorite quotes is "use the things you know to help you figure out the things that you don't." #WO2WorldChat
A3: 1st they need to express that they are stuck, which often involves calling out. Although untraditional in the classroom, this allows them to express themselves & invites other Ss to help. I also have a poster that I'll attach. #WO2World#WO2WorldChat#wotweechers
Exactly! I am a full-time doctoral student, also, so I really treasure the English 101/102 I get to teach, even if it is online, and the opportunities to serve my colleagues however I can. I just borrow their Ss as often as possible! #WO2WorldChat
A3: When Ss come to me about a problem, I show empathy, help them understand that their feelings are normal for the situation, and reassure them that even when things are hard, they are capable and able to face problems and get through stronger on the other side. #WO2WorldChat
A3: From a mathematical perspective, teachers can foster an environment in their classroom in which problem solving occurs without a pencil and paper by teaching students strategies for mental computation. Strategies like using pairs to ten can go a long way. #WO2WorldChat
A3 OMG, Socratic circles saved my classroom so many times. If we can promote an environment of trust & questioning in safe ways, mountains can be moved, instructionally & socially. #wo2worldchat
A3: My Ss and I have a morning meeting each day and we often discuss problems we've been experiencing which I think inspires them to help each other, helps them recognize that many problems are shared problems, and allows them to have a voice. #WO2WorldChat
A2. Talking to trusted colleagues is usually a great place to start when tackling a challenge. I also try to follow the advice of my one of my fellow Little League coaches: “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time!” #WO2WorldChat#WO2World#baseballwisdom
#wo2worldchat teamwork makes the dream work. I do team building activities in the beginning of the year to show them how much they need to rely on each other. I refer back to those activities throughout the year!
Love to create an environment of trust. That is one of the foundations of our classroom! My Ss feel safe emotionally, physically, and mentally. #RedwoodTweets#RedwoodRockets#WO2WorldChat
Exactly! It is why I finally chose this new doctoral program @murraystateuniv -- English Pedagogy & Technology is a blend of practice & theory that I truly appreciate. #WO2WorldChat
In reply to
@tyniathomassie, @dmdacosta13, @MrBronke, @murraystateuniv
A3: I also think sharing personal stories about yourself solving a problem can be super meaningful to the kids. My students know what my weaknesses are and I ask for their suggestions! My messy desk, for example. #WO2WorldChat
A4: #WO2WorldChat Feedback I give my students to let them know they are capable of turning problems into solutions, is I share ways in which I have turned problems into solutions & I encourage them, by helping them solve problems, & letting them know all problems have solutions!
#A4 Let's take a look at this again, let's dive deeper, unpack that for me, great start, I like where you're going, what else can we find here, let's keep thinking, let's play devil's advocate...#WO2WorldChat
Q4: What kinds of feedback do you give your students to let them know they are capable of turning problems into solutions? #WO2World#wo2worldchat#wotweechers
A4: With my Ss it is also important to be very specific with feed back "I like the way you brainstormed more than one solution...". This way they can learn from their own feedback and the feedback of their peers. #WO2WorldChat
A4 "I KNOW you can do it!" If Ss continue to struggle with a problem, I might offer suggestions or give them choices to solve it
#WO2WorldChat#nobodysolvesaproblemlikemaria
A4: I have recorder on the brain right now, but whenever a kid doesn’t pass his/her recorder karate belt test the first time, I like to guide them to find practice strategies that will help them troubleshoot and fix specific errors for the next class. #WO2worldchat
A4: often I discuss w/my Ss that they can solve problems on their own or w/Ss. I #encourage them to try to find solutions on their own, then if they are stuck I help guide them to the answer. #WO2WorldChat#RedwoodTweets
A4 I always lead with the genuine, specific positives in whatever we are discussing. So, if an essay, for example: start w/ the successes & then outline ways challenges can be overcome through editing, re-teaching, etc. Builds much needed academic confidence. #wo2worldchat
A4: I tell my Ss little ways to change their practice habits in order to make it through a problem with their music-isolating trouble spots; slow down the tempo; one step at a time! A problem doesn't have to be as daunting as it seems
#PracticeMakesImprovement#WO2WorldChat
Q4- In second grade we are always trying to find solutions for problems. We always ask what can you do to help with this problem? Or instead of ________ what can you try next time? It give the child to plan how to avoid this problem next time. #WO2WorldChat
A4: Writing can cause problematic feeling for Ss. I find the good thing that they did in their writing and together we "work through it." Working through problems helps you see the solution and hopefully learn from the problem. #WO2WorldChat#wo2world
#WO2Worldchat@KellyElementary@artwithmslopez@MrsPRomanchuk A4 If my Ss have a problem that they should be able to solve, I ask them guiding questions. That helps them reflect and teaches them that asking and answering the right self-imposed questions can lead to solutions.
A4: I give my Ss honest feedback to let them know they are capable of turning problems into solutions. I also try to help them see that the first step in solving any problem is to recognize what it is. From there, we work together to solve it, one step at a time. #WO2WorldChat
A4-I try to ensure that the Ss feel comfortable enough to come and talk freely and know that I will not pass judgement on them but try to help solve their issues #WO2WorldChat
A4: I often ask student what they have tried so far to deal with the problem they are having. Then, I celebrate their efforts, help them to explore why the things they have tried might not have worked, and assist them in brainstorming some new ideas. #WO2worldchat#problemsolving
A4: I also try to make sure the students are not catastrophizing. I may or may not have made up that word. Stay calm, take a step back, realize this hurdle is not that terrible and that all can be solved with teamwork and hard work. #WO2WorldChat
A3. Students who feel respected will be more ready to take ownership over solving problems. Respect is built on small things: always greeting students, avoiding sarcasm / put-downs, seeking first to understand, admitting mistakes. #WO2WorldChat#tweechers
#A5 What would an opposing perspective look like? How can you take me deeper? I used to like assigning a ? paper: every sentence in the paper had to be a ? No statements. This always jostled thinking though it was resisted @ 1st #FAILBIG#WO2WorldChat
A5: #WO2WorldChat The kinds of questions I ask students to help them set out on their own and discover new content/ideas is I really ask them to explain their thoughts: What is the idea? How will you make this idea come to fruition? What are the obstacles? What are your goals?
Q5: Failure is a vital part of problem solving. What kinds of questions do you ask students to help them set out on their own and discover new content/ideas?
#WO2World#WO2WorldChat#WOTweechers
A5: This one is tricky... Today I told a student "We wouldn't be in school if we ALWAYS got the right answer". I think showing and emphasizing your mistakes as a T are important too! #mistakesareprooofyouaretrying#WO2WorldChat
A5: "What do you want? Can you handle that? What if you tried some of what you're reaching for and combine it with something you feel comfortable doing?" Just because you lower the bar, doesn't mean you don't have high expectations. #WOTweechers#WO2World#WO2WorldChat
Q4- Failure is a hard thing for young children to understand. They don't want to fail and don't understand failure teaches us. We have the children make predictions and explain that they not be right, which is ok. We use this way of thinking in all subject areas. #WO2WorldChat
A5 I ask students questions that they don't immediately know the answer to but are eager to figure out. This motivates them to get on their chromebooks and read read read! #WO2WorldChat
A5: I always give Ss the chance to answer questions and try and figure it out on their own. S regularly reflect on their progress and how they can improve in lessons. #WO2WorldChat
A5: I often ask student what they have tried so far to deal with the problem they are having. Then, I celebrate their efforts, help them to explore why the things they have tried might not have worked, and assist them in brainstorming some new ideas. #WO2worldchat#problemsolving
Q4 #WO2WorldChat empathy, compassion, and encouragement. And telling them not to look focus on the past, rather focus on the future. The past can’t be changed; the future is all up to them and their choices.
A5: I always point out when I make a mistake. I show my Ss what I learned from it & what I would do differently the next time. It is a great opportunity for all to learn from. #WO2WorldChat#RedwoodTweets#RedwoodRockets#MistakesAreOK
A5: I try to give Ss confidence and let them know they can be successful if they just try - and if they fall I will help them try again. My CR is a safe place to fail and that’s how we learn and move forward. #WO2WorldChat
A4. Asking questions often unlocks the next step for students. “What else could you try?” “Have you thought about x?” “What will happen if you change this part?” “Have you asked any of your friends?” #WO2WorldChat#QuestionEverything
Q6: What have you learned about resiliency from your students that you've incorporated into your professional experience?
#WO2WorldChat#WO2World#WOTweechers
A6: #WO2WorldChat What I have learned about resiliency from my students that I've incorporated into your professional experience? Well, I have always been resilient & optimistic. It is a trait I have instilled in my students, encouraging them NOT to give up. And they don't!
Q6: What have you learned about resiliency from your students that you've incorporated into your professional experience?
#WO2WorldChat#WO2World#WOTweechers
A5: I ask students questions that activate prior knowledge before they set out on their own and discover new content. By connecting what they've learned in the past to new knowledge, students can make connections and become more comfortable with material.
#WO2World#WO2WorldChat
Love the idea of a safe place to fail. We learn so much from our mistakes! I love seeing my Ss face after they learned from their mistake. They are so empowered to accomplish anything! #WO2WorldChat#RedwoodTweets#RedwoodRockets
A6: My Ss resiliency constantly inspires me to do more and to do better. Ss are full of energy and excitement. It is my job to turn that energy into a learning experience for every S through both struggles and achievements. #WO2WorldChat
Q6- Resiliency is something I have definitely learned from my students. I have learned that there are going to be times that people disagree or don't like you, and either you can bounce back and make you grow or you could let it tear you down. #WO2WorldChat
A6: Literally everything. I have seen Ss come to me as refugees w/ nothing become scholarship recipients at Ivy League colleges. If they can achieve, I can do anything. #wo2worldchat
A6: I am CONSTANTLY AMAZED by how resilient my littles are. I try to find at least 1 thing in my day that was a victory and put that in my mind before I drive home. I think changing your mindset and letting all the negatives float away is key! #WO2WorldChat
Q6: There are lots of hurdles that musicians encounter when preparing for a performance, but I’m inspired every time I see Ss rise to the challenge & deliver the best performance they can. It reminds me to hang in there, even when the Ss & I are all frustrated! #WO2WorldChat
A6: Ss get feedback from Ts every single day. They are resilient. They come back, continue to try, ask questions and do better. Hats off to our kids! #WO2WorldChat#wo2world
A6 Ss: are quick to forgive and forget; just keep trying; admit their shortcomings; ask for help when needed. We can learn from them and benefit in both our professional and personal lives #WO2WorldChat#KidsCanTeachUs
A6: Ss that are dedicated to seeing through their vision inspire me to see my own visions through. They come in during lunch, after school, take work home, research on their own. Reminds me things are easy when you've got 100% passion. #WO2WorldChat#WOTweechers#WO2World
A6 #WO2WorldChat Students teach the ultimate lesson in beginning each new day with a fresh start as they barrel through the door filled w/ happiness. Students don't typically carry hardships from day to day. What a life lesson we should all carry. #StudentsAreTeachersToo
A6: Ss that are dedicated to seeing through their vision inspire me to see my own visions through. They come in during lunch, after school, take work home, research on their own. Reminds me things are easy when you've got 100% passion. #WO2WorldChat#WOTweechers#WO2World
A6: My Ss have taught me that #mistakes truly are the key to learning (in the CR and in life). I have this sign on my office door to remind Ss every time they visit. I have witnessed so many Ss make mistakes and end up better people because of them. #WO2worldchat#growthmindset
A6: I love my Ss passion and drive and I explore my passions along with them. They have also taught me to be a life long learner bc learning is FUN! #WO2WorldChat
A teacher friend once told me that the words of wisdom & advice we give our Ss is actually what we want to be telling ourselves. I totally think this is true--like when I'm telling Ss to not freak out act something small...which is something I struggle w/ myself! #WO2WorldChat
A6. Elementary school students are amazing models of resiliency! Each day they return to school full of hope, anticipation, and willingness to believe that my dad jokes will improve over time. I’m doing my best to live up to their faith in me! #WO2WorldChat
A6 some of my students have confided in me about their home life (parents living in a different country or deceased, for example) and I look at them in awe because even after everything they’ve been through, they never give up. #WO2WorldChat
A7: #WO2WorldChat An educational mantra I use to get me & your students through a challenge: Strive for Progress not Perfection!
It has helped me while doing my dissertation so I have passed it on to my students! #truth#progress
#A5 "Let's reflect on what we understand now and what we still have challenges with..." "Can we think out loud?" "Take the opposite argument - let's see where that takes us" #wo2worldchat
A6: Students have taught me a lot about resiliency. When I see Ss meet a challenge with a positive attitude or not letting challenging tasks overwhelm them, it inspires me. I believe that these good vibes, lead toward positive outcomes for both Ss and Ts.
#WO2WorldChat
Q7- We have been concentrating a lot of being kind this year. We have discussed ways to be kind and help others. My class this year did the #GKP18 and loved spreading kindness. We also believe that enjoying school and laughing often make a child enjoy life. #WO2WorldChat
A7 I often remind students, if we knew everything, there wouldn't be anything left to learn.
Failure/mistakes allow us to GROW and LEARN #WO2WorldChat#ThomasEdison
A7: "BREATHE!" "PAUSE" "Shake it off!" *bursts out in random noises* & overall to do things with kindness & fun. Problems can be intimidating, so make them feel smaller w/a sense that everything will be okay. #WO2WorldChat#WO2World#WOTweechers
A7: As a huge fan of the show HIMYM... When I present my kids with a challenge, I would have them chant back “Challenge Accepted”. They loved it and it made challenges exciting and fun! #WO2WorldChat
A7 Persist! It is a simple yet complex word that embodies my approach to teaching in public schools. We must stay the course & fight for what we know is true, right, and best. If I can teach my Ss that, no matter their age or circumstance, I've done my job. #wo2worldchat
A7: When faced with a seemingly impossible task, my educational mantra to get myself and my students through a challenge comes from Walt Disney, "It's kind of fun to do the impossible." #WO2WorldChat#NothingisImpossible
A7: I have become a big promoter of the #growthmindset. When Ss say they "can't" do something, I tell them to add “yet” and remind them of things they couldn’t do in the past but that they are now able to do because of their hard work and effort. #WO2worldchat#thepowerofyet
A7. I try to ask students, “How are you going to solve this problem? What can I do to support you in the process?” Students often think that administrators are there to impose solutions on them. They’re usually surprised/intrigued to have the onus put back on them. #WO2WorldChat
#A6 Teaching literature to Srs in HS was interesting. There seemed to be signif. fewer guys than gals, so I learned alot fr the kids who took my classes for the stretch. I kept the bar high & gave a lot of time to my strugglers. Their resilience inspired me daily #WO2WorldChat
