Welcome to #mdeschat !! I'm beyond excited about our topic tonight bec it's an issue/concern dear to my heart! Before we begin - take a moment to introduce yourself! (Pro tip: copy #mdeschat so you can just paste it at the end of each tweet!)
Hi, my name is Melissa Goretskie. I currently teach 5th grade at Tyler Heights with our wonderful host. I am very excited for tonight’s topic. #mdeschat
Welcome to #mdeschat !! I'm beyond excited about our topic tonight bec it's an issue/concern dear to my heart! Before we begin - take a moment to introduce yourself! (Pro tip: copy #mdeschat so you can just paste it at the end of each tweet!)
A1: I first learned about ACEs from either @EricJensenBrain or @NAREN_TranZed. At @TylerHeights we are striving to become more trauma informed, so we’ve delved into them as a staff this year thanks to the leadership of J.Bradshaw #mdeschat
A1: I had not a lot of experiencewith ACEs before this year. @TylerHeights has worked hard to make all staff aware of their great importance. #mdeschat
A2: 64% of “mostly white, middle- & upper-middle class, college-educated, & all had jobs & great health care” had ACE scores. Our schools have many students that have a very different environment, so I’m sure every school has students with ACE scores – some VERY high! #mdeschat
Absolutely! We recently learned that over 60% of all students no matter what there background or socioeconomic status have experienced 1-3 ACES. This effects most kids so we have to learn all we can
A2: Yes, adopting trauma informed practices would benefit teaching and learning because the continuum of trauma experienced is vast with varying degrees of effect on the instructional environment. #mdeschat
Absolutely! Including second hand trauma... the effect on staff is an important factor too. We'll discuss this part a little more in depth later... #mdeschat

A2: In the stresses of today’s world, I am sure more and more of our students come to us with ACEs. Therefore all schools need to be better equipped to handle our student’s traumas. #mdeschat
A2: Trauma informed practices can help schools better support Ss by not mistaking fight or flight behaviors as task avoidance, but maybe adverse effects of trauma. #mdeschat

Q3: Did you know that resilience can trump the impact of ACEs? How does resiliency (or lack thereof) manifest in student behavior? How does it manifest in adult behavior? #mdeschat
A2: Yes, trauma informed practices would definately help in the learning process for the child and for a better understanding if what that child is going through for the teacher. Definately a way to build trust #mdeschat
A3: Yes. Students with less resiliency give up easily and may appear hopeless. This could look a lot like “a lack of motivation” or “laziness”. #mdeschat

A3: Based on the APA resiliency factors: In adults I think it looks like burn out or giving up on one’s own power to influence a situation or experience. #mdeschat
And Help Ss to understand how to support one another. As Schools become more informed on ACE scores w/out “tracking” Ss or engaging in disparaging comments, strategies can be employed to provide support. #mdeschat
And there's so much more to it than just "grit"... self efficacy and emotional regulation are key components as well. Def a skill that needs to be practiced and developed #mdeschat
We have an amazing school counselor who participates in grade level discussions about advancing student learning providing strategies to help support relationship building as an intervention to support students. #mdeschat

I think we also need to consider teachers current direct traumas as well as their secondary ones because their direct ones will greatly effect how they cope with secondary traumas.
A4: Giving our students a sense of hope. Being purposefully culturally responsive, so students can see successful people that look like them. Build positive self image & efficacy. Goal setting. Helping students create plans when they face challenging situations. #mdeschat
A4: For myself, I need to be mindful of my self talk. Self care and balance is also something I need to work on. I took a self compassion quiz last night, and there are some activities to improve this skill/practice. #mdeschathttps://t.co/WzELLcYQbR
A4- Among a variety of other important building blocks for resilience, we have to be willing to display LOVE. Strengthens relationships, improves self-concept, etc. #mdeschat
A4. We have to teach students to have grit! Resilience and Perseverance.. we need to give our teachers an outlet to cope with the second hand trauma. #mdeschat
A1: I just recently heard of ACE scores. As an educator of young children, I am seeing more and more Ss coming to school with an adverse childhood experience. #mdeschat
I believe in order to build resilience, we as educators have to display it. We have to show examples, share stories from our own lives or those who we know have risen above everything to succeed #mdeschat

A5: Great reminder for something we should do. Patience, understanding & patience. We're all human. As teachers, we have a lot of interactions with upset children (many with ACEs) - but at the end of the day, we're the adults. #mdeschat
A4: Communicate the criteria for success so Ss know where to aim. A Faculty member reminded me of the relationship between student effort and the tasks placed in front of them. #mdeschat
I think most educators would find it eye opening to see the types of questions asked on the ACE survey. The fact that some of our Ss have to answer yes to those questions is heartbreaking. #mdeschat
I agree... and when you know, you can look at students through a trauma informed lens, and all of a sudden certain behaviors make sense or don't seem as big of a deal anymore #mdeschat
It starts with patience and love. We educators have to be able to quiet our natural response to a situation and go at it with a loving, compassionate heart. Equipping students with ways they themselves can calm down, ie breathing techniques, etc #mdeschat

I need to step away a bit early tonight, but what a powerful and important conversation tonight! Thanks @learnwholeheart and fellow #mdeschat educators for dropping knowledge and resource sharing! A great hour of sharing.

A5: I also believe that there should be resources in place for teachers who have gone through trauma of their own..there are many things in the ACE check list that our own co-workers have gone through..#mdeschat
Denise! I am so sorry! The error is on my end. I'm not sure what the issue is... I'll touch base with you and share everything I've gathered! Have a great Friday tomorrow!! #mdeschat
A5: Secondly, we have to cultivate an environment that not only teaches students how to deal with trauma in their own lives but also support their peers. #mdeschat
Based on step #1-Creating Safety, you could simply ask or survey your students to find out if they feel safe in school. I think simply asking also tells them it is important to you.
It is also powerful to take the test for yourself and then compare it the results of one of your most challenging students. I also wonder how many educators could answer those questions about their students. How well do we know what they experience in their daily lives
That is such a powerful idea! I also think about comparing to colleagues. Sometimes we assume things of our fellow colleagues, but they have backgrounds as well.
It’s funny how even with all the talk about edtech, change, risk, blah, blah, blah.... It come back to tasks.... That is it.... What are you actually asking them to do or create. That is it.
I am going to work with my students on self love and perseverance..I am going to try to find something we each have in common and also work with the whole class on being compassionate, understanding and kind toward our friends #mdeschat
