Hello! My name is Yvonne Lee and I am an elementary education major at Concordia College in Moorhead, MN. Currently, I am in a methods learning how and what to teach! #EdTechChat#CCED336
Hi! My name is Hannah Voigt and I am an Elementary Education major at Concordia College in Moorhead MN. I am currently a senior taking my elementary methods class #EdTechChat#CCED336
A1: #socialjustice has fairness and equity as its underlying principles, respect for basic human rights but its about critical social justice - inequality is embedded in society and we have to chage it. #edtechchat
A1: I define social justice as the right for each individual to have their values and lives respected and treated with equity AND equality #ElonEd#edtechchat
A1: I define social justice as the right for each individual to have their values and lives respected and treated with equity AND equality #ElonEd#edtechchat
Equality is everyone getting the same. Equity is about individuals getting what they need to achieve. Some need more than others, and that’s ok. We must do what we must to get everyone there, that’s equity. #edtechchat
A1: Not even sure how to define! I want to be transparent & empathetic....cant wait to hear other views!
Social Justice = People Treated Fairly
#edtechchat
A1) I define social justice as treating all people with equality and respect. Social justice means listening with an empathic ear and genuine compassion for the rights of all people #EdTechChat#CCED336
Every student deserves the same starting point. Or level field. From there student ms or teachers can grow based I. Their own skills and knowledge #Edtechchat
A1) I would define social justice as a well being and as resources everyone deserves. These resources shouldn’t just be equal but also equitable. I believe there isn’t social justice until everyone gets the resources they need #EdTechChat#CCED336
Equity is providing the tools that each students needs (beacuse each student needs different or more tools than others), rather than giving each students bthe same tools.
#edtechchat
A1: A celebration of differences among other people that promotes equity and encourages accountability for actions and inactions #edtechchat#diverselearners
Hi #edtechchat Lisa from @NazPrep in Pittsburgh. We are a design + tech and social justice focused school. A1: SJ in our school is about giving the space, tools and time for Ss to be youth change agents.
Hi #edtechchat Lisa from @NazPrep in Pittsburgh. We are a design + tech and social justice focused school. A1: SJ in our school is about giving the space, tools and time for Ss to be youth change agents.
A1: Social justice in the classroom is to provide students with equity, recognizing where action needs to be taken, and rectify social prejudices or misconceptions. #edtechchat#diverselearners
#edtechchat here are Ss at exhibitions sharing social justice projects and a poster @Chabizzle10 created for an @AgencybyDesign project focused on re-imagining the criminal justice system.
Tell students that every single person deserves to have a voice. It is critical as teachers that we allow our students to take action and fight their rights and freedom as individuals. Social justice starts when we invite our students to be apart of it. #ElonEd#EdTechChat
A2 - I've always tried to be as honest as possible at all times with my Ss regarding social issues. I've found that I've played the role of teacher, father, cheerleader, and mentor - sometimes all with the same student! #edtechchat
A2 listen to them. Help them understand what is happening. Let them make decisions. Contain any bias that you have and give them fair information #Edtechchat
A1 Social justice is making sure that everyone has access to the resources they need, not always the same, focus on equity in how people are treated and welcomed, #edtechchat
A2, the lessons we choose to emphasize, the values you decide are important in the classroom, how we promote interaction....are our civic duty - to craft and nurture the ideals with fidelity - in hopes to grow up a crew of empathetic and people-focused kiddos. #edtechchat
A2: We must be the facilitators of discussions that will encourage students to celebrate cultural differences, rather than treat them like taboos. #edtechchat#diverselearners
Hi I’m late! I’m in ATL. And A1 I define social justice partly as striving for equity and honesty. As paying attention to power structures and questioning what is normalized by those structures. #edtechchat
#edtechchat a level playing field for my special education students means that get supports and accommodations in order to start in the same place that their non disabled peers do
A2) Our methods class has enjoyed using the app flipgrid as a way to orally express opinion and understanding of our readings. I enjoy verbally expressing myself, so it is a great change of pace from written responses #EdTechChat#CCED336
A2; #edtechchat I think we have to be the springboard to get students to come up with their own ideas on what is social justice, I don't think we need to try and impart our own ideals.
A2) we have been using flipgrid as a way to respond to readings. It is award to begin, but I think it really helps you think through the content. I also like goose chase where the teacher poses a problem & students find answers in the room #EdTechChat#CCED366
A2: Have to give this lots of though... I suppose it is our role to guide students to their own views of the world, while also ensuring those views (and subsequent actions) are equitable. #edtechchat
A2: We present the social issues to them and attempt to have open discussions with them, especially older students. It's helpful if we're not bias and encourage them to see both sides of the issues. #Edtechchat
A2 For many, we are the first “sounding board”. We are often a major influencer of a S’s moral compass. Many don’t realize just how important it is to deal with issues appropriately. #edtechchat
A2: As educators, our roles when navigating social justice in the classroom is to become a facilitator to our students encouraging students to tap into their funds of knowledge. #edtechchat#diverselearners
A2: be a listener, ask Qs, help them to generate good Qs; and most importantly, infuse #socialjustice issues through the curriculum and in daily teaching. #edtechchat
A2 Our role is twofold, facilitate & listener....we should decenter ourselves & delve into issues that effect our students....issues they are most concerned with...then, assist them in learning about the issues and how they can make a change #edtechchat
A2: In order to make sure we are effectively acknowledging social issues we need to find the relevance of issues in society to the students lives. Our role is to help them see that they are apart of the solution. #ElonEd#edtechchat
#edtechchat a level playing field for my special education students means that get supports and accommodations in order to start in the same place that their non disabled peers do
A2 Educators are guides for Ss in so many ways, and navigating social issues is one of the most challenging. Ss follow our examples. We strive to be an anchor to their moral compass while they explore social issues and we help guide their direction. #edtechchat
A2 We listen, facilitate and encourage students to share perspectives, and be there to help keep discussions going in a positive way and work through any differing opinions with respect, ask Qs, #edtechchat
A2: When navigating social issues we play the role of role model, student learn from how we react or navigate social issues within them.
#edtechchat#diverselearners
A2: As educators, we want to establish meaningful relationships with our students. To achieve this, we must consciously inquire about their funds of knowledge and find ways to include their experiences in our planning and instruction. #edtechchat#diverselearners
A2: Educators should fight for equity by moving from Allie to Advocate to Actor in the face of injustice and oppression. Address bias and privilege and practice culturally relevant and sustaining pedagogy. Start with listening and reading - a lot. #edtechchat
A2) We must stop pretending that our students are unaware of what is happening in our society. It is our Moral Imperative to encourage them to be critical thinkers that challenge the #StatusQuo. #edtechchat
#edtechchat a level playing field for my special education students means that get supports and accommodations in order to start in the same place that their non disabled peers do
A2 Our role is twofold, facilitate & listener....we should decenter ourselves & delve into issues that effect our students....issues they are most concerned with...then, assist them in learning about the issues and how they can make a change #edtechchat
a2 we create lessons around social justice. We make sure the hidden curriculum is addressed when words like gay and retarded are used. We become anti-racist teachers
#edtechchat
A2: We must be the facilitators of discussions that will encourage students to celebrate cultural differences, rather than treat them like taboos. #edtechchat#diverselearners
And encourage them to seek more than one source if they don't understand the subject / so much propaganda and bias. Teach how to recognize these. #edtechchat
Whole school model is about Ss voice/choice w large thematic trans-disciplinary blocks. Tech woven into all we do as well as human centered design. #edtechchat
#edtechchat here are Ss at exhibitions sharing social justice projects and a poster @Chabizzle10 created for an @AgencybyDesign project focused on re-imagining the criminal justice system.
Q3: Charles Ellis states “Technology offers students resources, tools and environments that can connect them to the world outside like never before.” How have you used technology to offer the world to your students? #edtechchat
Even better why not visit your Ss neighborhoods, attend community events and celebrate differences - we’ve created VRs of these events in the past to share with broader community #edtechchat
A2) As teachers, I believe my role is to explain social issues to the students & make them aware of why they are present and to teach them how to critically think about the issues. I think they should be discussed honestly with the students #EdTechChat#EDCC336
A2) As teachers, our role is to honestly explain social issues to students by emphasizing the importance their actions and voices have in our world. Students need to know that they absolutely can make a difference #EdTechChat#CCED336
I agree--this is more active sometimes and good teaching may require being uncomfortable by speaking up, even fiercely, and NOT overlooking/pretending not to notice injustice #edtechchat
#edtechchat in some cases finishing isn't the goal. They and their parents need to see them included and involved. Its hard to play if the rules are out of your reach.
A2) As teachers, our role is to honestly explain social issues to students by emphasizing the importance their actions and voices have in our world. Students need to know that they absolutely can make a difference #EdTechChat#CCED336
A3 - I've been able to bring guest speakers to my classroom through video google hangouts, which has afforded my students the opportunity to "meet" business professionals they would not have otherwise been able to meet.
#edtechchat
A3: all the time! Need to use tech to connect Ss globally to talk about #socialjustice and #equity issues - start w/ a big idea and driving Q and go from there...create a YT video together, have a Twitter chat, Skype, become social change agents and get voices out! #edtechchat
A3 technology gives students a chance to share ideas, see multiple viewpoints and connect with like minded folks. Knowledge is the new currency and students need to know how to share it responsibly #EdTechChat
A3: Love when Ts break down the walls of the classroom by taking part in #MysterySkype#GlobalCollaboration I love when @stemboss says "You can't be, what you can't see"
Open the window/doors/cracks of your classroom!
#edtechchat
I can agree with that… but my goal is always to have them achieve the same level. Does it always happen? No… but everyone deserves to be taught the material, some just take more work to get it. Our job is to help them get it. #edtechchat
A3 I used @edmodo to connect w/ other classrooms in Spanish speaking countries for our #pbl and #TeachSDGs and then @Flipgrid and @padlet to share videos and pictures and discussions #edtechchat
A3 So important to me #edtechchat I use a tool, Read Ahead, to let students apply multiple lenses to texts before being told how they are “supposed” to read it.
Q3: Charles Ellis states “Technology offers students resources, tools and environments that can connect them to the world outside like never before.” How have you used technology to offer the world to your students? #edtechchat
You offer the world to students when you allow them to see it. For geography, ArcGIS is a great software programs for students to understand and analyze real life issues regarding poverty, literacy rates and places of drought! #ElonEd#edtechchat
Q3: Charles Ellis states “Technology offers students resources, tools and environments that can connect them to the world outside like never before.” How have you used technology to offer the world to your students? #edtechchat
A3: Our Ss have prototyped and designed Apps, worked at internships, programmed robots based off of books and visited tech-rich companies like Uber. #edtechchat
A3 We also made @Buncee to share who we are and posted on a Buncee Board and shared with the other Ss so they could learn how to create . them, and also through Skype @MicrosoftEDU#edtechchat
A3: In my 4th-grade class we use platforms like @Newsela so my children can get differentiated current events to read to spark any questions/curiosity about our 21st century world. #edtechchat
A2: As a teacher, I want to empower my students to become advocates for themselves when navigating social issues. I want to remind them that they have a voice and they are not powerless, even though it may feel like that at times. #edtechchat
A3: I haven’t yet but I’d like for them to use digital platforms like Twitter, YouTube, etc. that allows them to extend their learning beyond the classroom. #edtechchat#diverselearners
Q3: Charles Ellis states “Technology offers students resources, tools and environments that can connect them to the world outside like never before.” How have you used technology to offer the world to your students? #edtechchat
A3: I have played around with arcademics website, kahoot, GoNoodle. Hopefully by the end of this year my students will be doing their own research and type up their writers workshop activities. #edtechchat#diverselearners#csudh
Q3: Charles Ellis states “Technology offers students resources, tools and environments that can connect them to the world outside like never before.” How have you used technology to offer the world to your students? #edtechchat
Welcome@ We are on Q3: Charles Ellis states “Technology offers students resources, tools and environments that can connect them to the world outside like never before.” How have you used technology to offer the world to your students? #edtechchat
A2: As education we are guides for students, mentors or even counselors going over different social issues in history or a current issue students maybe facing. #Edtechchat#diverselearners
By student teaching at a 1:1 iPad school, we must use technology everyday. I find that it offers many students “the world” by making content more accessible to all EL and SPED students and their needs. #edtechchat
Q3: Charles Ellis states “Technology offers students resources, tools and environments that can connect them to the world outside like never before.” How have you used technology to offer the world to your students? #edtechchat
A3 Technology can provide a means for equal access to content otherwise unavailable- providing devices 1:1 and supporting Ts, Ss, and Ps in their use and implementation (including home wifi) meant even Ss with limited means could participate in #edtech lessons! #edtechchat
A3: Technology is a great way to interact and connect with people that you could not before (the pen pal upgrade). You can use communication tools to meet and have conversations with leaders, other students, and people from all over the world - even in space :-) #edtechchat

Not always - sometimes well meaning parties put down the other side just to have you think negatively about the other even though they may agree with the concept. #edtechchat

A3. Technology allows us to connect to people we never could have before and gives us easy access to vast amounts of information, thoughts and ideas from these different people and perspectives. I'm excited to hear how teachers are using tech in their classrooms #edtechchat
Q3: Charles Ellis states “Technology offers students resources, tools and environments that can connect them to the world outside like never before.” How have you used technology to offer the world to your students? #edtechchat
#edtechchat A3: I already use Google Classroom in my 3rd grade class, but I want to use that as a platform to get my students blogging like on KidBlog. I’d also like to start using @Flipgrid in my class to allow students to make videos to share their learning with the world.
A4. Understanding the why - what's the end goal; is the tech needed; how will my learners be more empathetic, globally-focused individuals. Start there before preparing to use tech. #edtechchat
A4: Gonna go all technical on everyone...got to have bandwidth & devices!
Srsly...have convos w/Ss about being respectful of differences & realizing they are learning opportunities
#edtechchat
.@Raspberry_Pi enabled blessing box our Ss designed (Hack on the original Little pantry concept at most places — client said they couldn’t keep track of inventory remotelt) that takes pic when doors are closed and sends to twitter bot. #EdTechChat
A4: Not sure you need to make any extra provisions for technology in this case. I think communication with parents, though so they know what is going on will be critical. The technology is just a tool, not the end game. #edtechchat
A2: As an educator, I attempt to be the person I needed when I was a child, the person my dog (students) think I am, & the person children can count on to love, nurture, & encourage them. #edtechchat
A4: Remember that for all tech to work, all must have the tech, connectivity, and support wherever they are, not just in the school building. #edtechchat
I wish I did have those self advocacy resources, but I'm also an Intervention Specialist on campus & meet often w/Ss that are having trouble navigating HS. I do start small and show them how to self advocate by being able to write emails and talk to their Ts #edtechchat
A4: at the end of the day, tech empowerment for social justice if going to look different depending on the issues and the region. Be open minded and flexible and let the students lead the way. #edtechchat
A3: google expeditions has been a favorite. The look on students’ eyes who have never left nw GA when the look around the moon, mars, or Statue of Liberty’s inspiring #edtechchat
A3: I assist Ts with planning lessons/activities that allow students to share their thoughts & ideas globally, to amplify student voice, & facilitators of their own learning. #edtechchat
A3: we have used google sheets to produce data of a random population to produce a graph based on fitness and allele frequency for a small population n=25, n=1000 for 10 generations. #edtechchat#diverselearners
A4. Understanding the why - what's the end goal; is the tech needed; how will my learners be more empathetic, globally-focused individuals. Start there before preparing to use tech. #edtechchat
A4: By first foremost assuring there is ample tech available at school as well as reliable connectivity. You can’t implement any type of consistent tech if an entire school is fighting over one cart of iPads and old laptops. #edtechchat
A4 It takes more than just equal access. For many they will experience their first meaningful interactions with technology Some will have a significant learning curve. We need to have systems in place to help get them up to speed. Back to that whole equity thing again #edtechchat
A4 the teachers should know what they are doing when it comes to social justice. You can't just start without a background of knowledge. Once they have become well versed then they need to show how tech furthers white supremacy. Have those tools ready to show them #edtechchat
A4: Like most tech use, a reminder about digital citizenship. There needs to be a conversation about having an open mind and respect. Respecting others, their cultures beliefs, norms, etc. to avoid cyberbullying - intentional or not. #edtechchat
A3 . I haven't done it near as much as I would like, but one I love is "Exploring by the Seat of Your Pants" https://t.co/aK4t0LDrjO They play the middle man to many excursions. Students can interact live with scientists, authors, electricians, etc #edtechchat
A4. Understanding the why - what's the end goal; is the tech needed; how will my learners be more empathetic, globally-focused individuals. Start there before preparing to use tech. #edtechchat
A4 the teachers should know what they are doing when it comes to social justice. You can't just start without a background of knowledge. Once they have become well versed then they need to show how tech furthers white supremacy. Have those tools ready to show them #edtechchat
A4: always has to be a purpose - what is the learning goal? What habits of mind will be cultivated? Have to teach background information and be mindful of time differences. #edtechchat
A4. Preparing to use any tech, we should ensure all students have access and whichever tools we decide to use protect student data and privacy #edtechchat
A4: sometimes the tech is not needed - start by having conversations and ensure understanding -it's a huge topic w/ so much involved...Ss need time to think, reflect and discuss. #edtechchat
A4: equal access, not just to tech but for information. Digital citizenship plays a huge role. A recent study showed that the average “made up” news was shared five times more often than real stories on Facebook. How to tell lies disguised as truth is huge! #edtechchat
A4: I think it’s significant to discuss the issues of social justice. They need to gain understanding of what it means and grasp their feelings around its narrative. #edtechchat
A4: teaching on what digital citizenship means. teaching on how to respectfully disagree without being disagreeable. teaching about how to make a point without attacking others just because you can't physically "see" them #edtechchat
A4 not to be contrary but how can you answer q4 without speaking about race, gender, SES, or sexuality? Access shouldn't be much of an issue in school. Outside of school yes. Is anyone teaching how technology shapes thoughts about intersectionality? #edtechchat
My mom attended Hale County training school to learn to be a maid, she couldn't go to the high school because... well brown v. board didn't exist... only on paper #EdTechChat
A4: sometimes the tech is not needed - start by having conversations and ensure understanding -it's a huge topic w/ so much involved...Ss need time to think, reflect and discuss. #edtechchat
As we have seen a lot lately, what you post can follow you forever. The internet never disappears. Also a confused message can be taken out of context. A focused message finds allies. #Edtechchat
You need to put this together and show it off - this has NCEA, PETE&C, ATLIS, and a whole lot of other conferences where this would be welcomed with open arms #edtechchat
In reply to
@Learn21Tech, @Raspberry_Pi, @Chabizzle10
A5: technology should not be the priority here; at least not in the beginning. the priority should be understanding the history of marginalized populations and issues related to #socialjustice- where we were, where we are and what we need to do close the inequities. #edtechchat
A5: I saw an activist on Stephen Colbert talking about how social media formed the basis for communication and organization. With @TEDTalks and other avenues, can’t first hand accounts assist? #edtechchat
A4: Like most tech use, a reminder about digital citizenship. There needs to be a conversation about having an open mind and respect. Respecting others, their cultures beliefs, norms, etc. to avoid cyberbullying - intentional or not. #edtechchat

This summer I had 3rd graders recite a fable or fairy tale they’d written using @flipgrid. Ended up finding out a lot about them from the activity. The he middle school library assistant even wanted to participate. They wanted me to come back with another lesson. #edtechchat
A5: once Ss have time to dissect, examine, and discuss, then tech can come in to share the learning and Ss develop their #digcit and #habitsofmind as well. #edtechchat
As in most parts of education, technology is just a tool that we use to learn and connect things together in new ways. We need to make sure the tech doesn't obscure the issues #edtechchat
A4: equal access, not just to tech but for information. Digital citizenship plays a huge role. A recent study showed that the average “made up” news was shared five times more often than real stories on Facebook. How to tell lies disguised as truth is huge! #edtechchat
My bi-racial teens live in it...it's amazing what kids see and learn. I remember when my daughter declared the new president looked like her. That was good, but didn't do enough. #EdTechChat
A6: I will continue to bring the ideas and suggestions I’ve learned from chats to educators when I help them plan and am a part of their team meetings. Many of them follow me so they see a lot of good ideas I RT. #edtechchat
A6: I am checking out arcademics, explore by the seat, and using our next training time to have a discussion about best practices in credible sources in our classrooms. Great talk tonight, and great questions! #edtechchat
A6 - I had two AMAZING Ts on our MS campus put on a social justice expo by G8 students. Blew my mind. I am tagging them for them to review this and see how we can continue to deepen empathy in our kiddos. #edtechchat#kispd@karcallahan@megnolia09
