Hi ! Looking forward to learning from you all tonight! On a mission to personalize my ESL, college-level Ss' learning.
A1 Many students come with misunderstandings ...the reality is we have to help them thru the unlearning before we can teach
A1 Often younger students build basic misconceptions and must unlearn them to open their minds to new-real learning!
A1. We use a Priming Plan for the 1st week(s) of school to drive unlearning. Put Ss in charge as they walk thru the door.
A1) I often unlearn old habits + retrain myself for new learning. Just a part of being an educator! https://t.co/22ZUtB8WwP
RT A1: Here is an article worth a look about this Q: Unlearning is the most important thing https://t.co/zxlP3TOc9K
A1 The process of unlearning requires teaching students to reflect on their learning throughout the process.
A1 - The change of relearning is tough and takes time. we go slow to go fast!!!
A1: means I don't teach the way "it's always been done before". means I keep trying new ways.
I agree Mark. Also we need for learners to talk about their learning https://t.co/CwiznOPWvQ
A1 The process of unlearning requires teaching students to reflect on their learning throughout the process.
This is great - I'd love to know more about the Priming Plan - do you have a link? https://t.co/0aMgW5r6dN
A1. We use a Priming Plan for the 1st week(s) of school to drive unlearning. Put Ss in charge as they walk thru the door.
Kia ora, greetings from NZ - Joanne here.
A1: we as teachers need to model the lifelong learner disposition
Reflecting and talking about learning with students is key!
Welcome Joanne to ! Glad you could join us tonight from NZ https://t.co/MjYFmOfPeQ
Kia ora, greetings from NZ - Joanne here.
A1: we as teachers need to model the lifelong learner disposition
Go slow to go fast - what a concept you are so right about relearning takes time https://t.co/Qe9Xow951K
A1 - The change of relearning is tough and takes time. we go slow to go fast!!!
A1 promotes inquiry based learning Ss have a vested interest in what they are learning. they need to understand the unlearning.
Hi all . Library technology hs teacher coming in late.
Teaching students to find their own clarity! https://t.co/IYZKt2snvL
A1 promotes inquiry based learning Ss have a vested interest in what they are learning. they need to understand the unlearning.
Hi. Christine from the Sunshine Coast, BC. Math educator, doctoral Ss, school trustee. Great topic.
IMO, in the area of math it's easy to fall into the pattern of "the way it has always been done" https://t.co/qitRi5E7qv
A1: means I don't teach the way "it's always been done before". means I keep trying new ways.
Hello, Staci from Ohio here. Can't participate completely, but lurking when I can.
A1: Unlearning means beeing open to new ideas and willingness to try.
A1. With technologies changing and updating Ts & Ss need to be flexible enough to unlearn and relearn
Kia ora Joanne happy you are here from NZ - you are right about modeling lifelong learner https://t.co/F5zGehxtZZ
Kia ora, greetings from NZ - Joanne here.
A1: we as teachers need to model the lifelong learner disposition
Welcome to ! https://t.co/yYVaQXFtS0
Hi. Christine from the Sunshine Coast, BC. Math educator, doctoral Ss, school trustee. Great topic.
That's been one of the most difficult things for me to overcome as a teacher
A1 I have a poster on my wall that reads, "Find your own truth and own it"
Yeah is in the house!! Just jump in - your voice matters in https://t.co/rIZktu9nCR
Hi all . Library technology hs teacher coming in late.
Q2 is coming up in 1 minute!
A1: To me, unlearning is the TTWWADI. Ts need to push and try new ways of teaching.
A1 Ts are vulnerable and "humanized" so kids can see the constant changes that take place in learning based on inquiry.
welcome to Excited to learn with you!
Welcome so glad you jumped in to https://t.co/FvlOqmbQSR
Hi. Christine from the Sunshine Coast, BC. Math educator, doctoral Ss, school trustee. Great topic.
Hello!! Patrick from Kentucky here!
A2 Questioning! Get students asking questions and listen carefully. They will tell you what they need to Unlearn!
For Ss, I don't think of unlearning--more about adding to the repertoire of learning strategies. Many ways to tackle things.
A1. Unlearning & relearning require learners (me included) to trust & be vulnerable. Requires convincing. Habits hard to break.
relevant for Ts as well. Letting go of control.
thanks. Always loving to join . Logging onto
Yet it's about building culture so learning is based on inquiry & showing our vulnerability https://t.co/nb772rk8iA
A1 Ts are vulnerable and "humanized" so kids can see the constant changes that take place in learning based on inquiry.
Lurking is a great way to start!
Yeah is here in - we definitely need your voice on this topic https://t.co/kfFU3PWBnO
Hello!! Patrick from Kentucky here!
Absolutely! If we do not listen to what others do not know, we have no direction! https://t.co/Gfi2fRgtbr
relevant for Ts as well. Letting go of control.
A1: Unlearning means recognizing that students and their needs change. Looking for new and better ways to meet those needs.
A2: Don’t miss this reading: Learning, Unlearning, and Relearning: Lessons from One School’s Approach https://t.co/Nt5J8dUlD1
A2: Don’t miss this reading: Learning, Unlearning, and Relearning: Lessons from One School’s Approach https://t.co/RiHqBM1oTd
A1: Ts role in class is changing. It is very different from they way we learn and they way we are used to teaching.
A2: I think could be used for this. No two puzzles are the same. Think outside the box.
Paul from NJ jumping in late. Dean of Behavioral Management/Special Ed Teacher/Gamechanger. Excited to learn with
A2: since there are always new discoveries, keep an open-mind to unlearning things. What is set in stone?
A2: How to Stay Current and Get Ahead via https://t.co/LZqoyI9KDg refer to list in article on what to unlearn & relearn
A2 - Feedback from students as well as peers. Creating a safe learning environment will help us grow.
A1: I think relearn is going to be the new norm. Designing learning experiences for Ss will change based on needs of Ss.
A2: Reflective practice, convos w/students. Mainly reflective practice! And, of course, inspiring chats such as this one!
A2) If a former belief/habit is a barrier to new learning + advancing to a new level, then hit restart. https://t.co/MtAugGvCig
A2. Culture shifting. Best for Ss learning. To get collab learning, for ex, need to undo survival of fittest mindset. Worth it.
...because very often the teacher needs to Unlearn as well...
https://t.co/5WwON1l0Yz
A2 - Feedback from students as well as peers. Creating a safe learning environment will help us grow.
Sorry , Is stands for That's The Way We've Always Done It.
That's a cool idea breaks you out of the old way of thinking - outside the box https://t.co/a6PfoeQHQr
A2: I think could be used for this. No two puzzles are the same. Think outside the box.
A2: By developing trust based relationships. When S's feel safe and ready to be vulnerable, the picture becomes much clearer.
A2: as a librarian, I am always changing things in the library to make sure it has a fresh look. Ss and Ts need to be on alert
A2 Inquiry! Ss need to practice H.O.T. questioning.
Wouldn't that be great if all Ss felt safe as they learn? Thank you https://t.co/8DFBnhFatx
A2 - Feedback from students as well as peers. Creating a safe learning environment will help us grow.
A2 continued: to make sure they know where things are.
A2: Formative data is my go to guide to see what has worked and what hasn't. What's not working needs replaced.
A2: S needs. If I'm not reaching Ss then I need to learn a new way or approach to meet their needs.
A2: New practices, new technologies, new opportunities, new reality!
A2 - As a SocialStudies teacher sometimes we need to hit the reset button on attitudes toward other people ...
Yes ! Formative assessment is key to determine what needs to be unlearned and relearned https://t.co/V5LpZrt3HT
A2: Formative data is my go to guide to see what has worked and what hasn't. What's not working needs replaced.
Let’s talk about driving learning in Q3!
adapting how we use tech ... like using as a teaching tool rather than just a game.
Trusting your Ss and them respect Ts. Wouldn't that be wonderful!! Thank you https://t.co/aEJk8A7pQD
A2: By developing trust based relationships. When S's feel safe and ready to be vulnerable, the picture becomes much clearer.
A2: Know thy learners (Hattie) Know thy WHY? - educative purpose + context of school/community. Learn unlearn relearn - mindset
Really agree with that. Even how they use their phones inside and outside of Schools.
A1: These are driving forces. Each conversation begins w/ culture. Must be honest assessment of self/others to maximize growth.
Yes - I was a Social Studies teacher - yes we need a reset button on attitudes toward others https://t.co/JtkBHMdqpc
A2 - As a SocialStudies teacher sometimes we need to hit the reset button on attitudes toward other people ...
A2: we can shrug off student scores as something wrong with the test, but they are a valuable measure of student understanding
Excellent point ! https://t.co/ekyjhaG9Tc
A1: These are driving forces. Each conversation begins w/ culture. Must be honest assessment of self/others to maximize growth.
A3 When students partner with the teacher on the journey within the standards, they take a NEW priority and focus. Old is left..
Love formative assessment responses. Definitely. To form and inform learning. Dislike "we've always done it this way."
A3 Unpacking the standards and getting Ss to decide on the path
Great point! There first has to be a clear goal/purpose, choice of tool - after!
A2. Paradigm shifts: Ss control time; drives Ss learning; Ss self-assess & set goals; Ts as resources
A3 Unpacking the standards is a idea I learned from the IB world
Unpacking with the students to being a working common language and goals... https://t.co/O32pq013U6
A3 Unpacking the standards and getting Ss to decide on the path
It is wonderful Takes work but that work is well worth the investment.
A3: chart their own progress. I love it when ss ask to try things a different way. Their call, not always mine.
Form and inform learning - getting to know what Ss are really thinking - yes Thanks https://t.co/zBgz0Rz7BT
Love formative assessment responses. Definitely. To form and inform learning. Dislike "we've always done it this way."
A3 With good targets and success criteria, and student driven learning, we can erase the bad and grow the new!
A3: Ss should have "choice" and "voice" in the decisions about Ss learning. is key, too.
A3: Look the insights here on this topic: Growth Mindset and the Common Core Math Standards https://t.co/VvKaJ38PKm
A3: Look the insights here on this topic: Growth Mindset and the Common Core Math Standards https://t.co/UlYSgNqFEx
. Ss chose & demonstrated how they met standards & articulated what they learned? https://t.co/jsZkY0PN4I
A3 When students partner with the teacher on the journey within the standards, they take a NEW priority and focus. Old is left..
A3: with a data binder ss can go look back to check mastery and see where they need to improve or change the path to learning.
A3 Student ownership is STRENGTH! Help them to see the path and watch them take the journey!
A3: T's and Admin who value students over standards. We must be creative in our HOW's so S's feel their learning is valued.
A3: learners need to see relevance, be challenged, have ownership of learning/agency, clear pathway - how to get there
Love it! Ss charting their own progress - their call. I would love to see how you do that. https://t.co/hoEioEnDdP
A3: chart their own progress. I love it when ss ask to try things a different way. Their call, not always mine.
Now you are talking my language! You know I am the guy! A student in charge will take the lead https://t.co/4LM5fV0sM0
. Ss chose & demonstrated how they met standards & articulated what they learned? https://t.co/jsZkY0PN4I
A3 When students partner with the teacher on the journey within the standards, they take a NEW priority and focus. Old is left..
Absolutely! It's incumbent upon Ts to help Ss see how the CC fits into their problems of interest. https://t.co/jLwqJvrSSi
A3. Standards always changing. Not static. Learning should change as well. Ss find learning experience engaging & meaningful.
A3: With more global connections, Ss can see a problem from another person's perspective. Opening them up to new learning.
love the election process, but it is hard to keep things civil especially when it is not being modeled at home
to learning is key to unlearn and relearn in a standards base world https://t.co/D8RriEP0AW
A3 Student ownership is STRENGTH! Help them to see the path and watch them take the journey!
Visible Learning - clear progressions of where I am at, where I've been and where I'm going.
You could even use relearning when discussing American Revolution from the British perspective.
A3: I think it gives them different perspective and drives more questions. Ss become more understanding.
A3: Numbers don't tell all. Each learner has a diff story. If we don't know the history behind the mystery, we lose.
Yes Yes Yes -- relevance, be challenged, have ownership of agency - thank you https://t.co/fXBAcO7GT1
A3: learners need to see relevance, be challenged, have ownership of learning/agency, clear pathway - how to get there
A3 Real-world problems engage kids through "purpose, mastery, autonomy" () in classrooms. Unlearning required!
A3
S Data Tracking, Encourage questioning, digging. Ss set goals. Voice and Choice.
Have you had luck connecting with a class in Britain to do this?
they have a data binder with a STAR reading progress chart and ccss checklists that they color green when "mastered".
A3 In honor of standards, skills are more attractive to learn for students than just "stuff"..They can feel the growth.
I haven't yet, but I have had Ss just use British Websites to discuss. Relearning to be less US centric
I've done that and Ss have written home as the soldiers on what they saw in the colonies https://t.co/BE08iwFXqf
You could even use relearning when discussing American Revolution from the British perspective.
We’re saying good-bye to old paradigms in Q4.
That's a very good point. I loved watching them make adjustments in Robotics to master a challenge.
That is why skills in a competency-based system works for learners \ https://t.co/GQP6bpJLFo
A3 In honor of standards, skills are more attractive to learn for students than just "stuff"..They can feel the growth.
A4 Change is hard, we get set in our ways. Change is a risk and takes effort. Even when things are broken, we keep on...
When Ss learn what is real authentic, they have purpose - Unlearning is required - thanks https://t.co/d0F7jolrkb
A3 Real-world problems engage kids through "purpose, mastery, autonomy" () in classrooms. Unlearning required!
So so very true! https://t.co/TJeIMboa6F
That is why skills in a competency-based system works for learners \ https://t.co/GQP6bpJLFo
A3 In honor of standards, skills are more attractive to learn for students than just "stuff"..They can feel the growth.
A4: For Ts it is just easier to stay with the old paradigms. Ts must have Growth Mindset.
A4: it is hard to think of new ways, but get Ss involved.
Absolutely agree! Fixed mindset is #1 barrier to unlearning and relearning.
A4: honestly from my experience it has been convincing parents, not ss, that it needs to be done.
A4 It takes time for all teachers to "buy in" even when it is easier and for the better. Change needs to be celebrated!
A4 The fear that you may be the only one brave enough to change?
A4. Difficulty: communicating change to "outsiders" (e.g. Ps) who may not understand the change & WHY behind the change.
Habits & patterns are difficult to change. It takes 90 days to change a habut - need time to unlearn https://t.co/yzCPE1ima8
A4 Change is hard, we get set in our ways. Change is a risk and takes effort. Even when things are broken, we keep on...
We definitely need to be the explorers and champions on this or else no one will
A4 Truth: My favorite way to get people to follow me in change is to make them wonder what in the world is going on over there!
A4 When a paradigm is introduced we need to evaluate what was not working/irrelevant before. Risk-taking is hard but necessary.
A4: Fear of unknown. Lack of support. Comfort/familiarity. Concern over "new" being accepted.
A4: Thinking that the status quo model ain't broken! Parents/Govt/Schools/Ts know what they know. We need more, and less
True and sometimes Ss can help if they change in one class, why not in all.
A4 it's always about the devil you know
Often times, the time is not given and this overwhelms even the BEST of educators! https://t.co/LPnC7mnv0b
Habits & patterns are difficult to change. It takes 90 days to change a habut - need time to unlearn https://t.co/yzCPE1ima8
A4 Change is hard, we get set in our ways. Change is a risk and takes effort. Even when things are broken, we keep on...
That is why we admins need to support risk-taking https://t.co/FpatHTIzL0
A4 The fear that you may be the only one brave enough to change?
A4: the most difficult is not giving into the status quo. It's like not giving into a toddler's temper tantrum.
Especially is they are talking about the new ideas and the growth they are enjoying! https://t.co/w5kb2UzKe8
True and sometimes Ss can help if they change in one class, why not in all.
A4: leaving one's comfort zone, but only at first. It can feel great, especially when seeing Ss falling in love w/learning again!
A4. Fear: policy resistance. Little support from colleagues and/or school leadership. Fighting an uphill battle. Burnout
A4: The shift to putting Ss in control is scary and how that will impact test scores.
This is why we need our own and to keep us going. https://t.co/IwSY7MGdoz
A4. Fear: policy resistance. Little support from colleagues and/or school leadership. Fighting an uphill battle. Burnout
Support and partnership! Just like our students need!!! https://t.co/BPGz02l5wM
A4. Fear: policy resistance. Little support from colleagues and/or school leadership. Fighting an uphill battle. Burnout
A4) Stepping outside the box and into the unknown is scary. Need supportive and encouraging team! https://t.co/gGFdodIeId
Forgot burnout. Good one, Christine. Sad but very true in some cases.
A4: Can be extremely difficult if not on Twitter, not having an amazing PLN such as :)
Our Ss forget most of what we teach them. But they will remember their teachers forever.Begood and kind to them
Hi Gabrielle - Yes so true about not giving into a toddler's temper tantrum. Know that one https://t.co/Nq7EJKfKWW
A4: the most difficult is not giving into the status quo. It's like not giving into a toddler's temper tantrum.
So true! https://t.co/Ty77wzzl2I
Our Ss forget most of what we teach them. But they will remember their teachers forever.Begood and kind to them
yes, being the only one or the first one is risky! I know, but lucky to have great support.
So, What if we harness if is they remember and make it part of all of our teaching? https://t.co/3c7hPs8kfd
Our Ss forget most of what we teach them. But they will remember their teachers forever.Begood and kind to them
Find your tribe. I found mine outside of on projects https://t.co/dUrqSN8hLP
A4: Can be extremely difficult if not on Twitter, not having an amazing PLN such as :)
Great point. They will forever remember how they FELT in classes b/c of how they were treated. That stays with people.
Fasten your seatbelts, Q5 is around the bend!
Q5: How can mindset and perseverance be factors in unlearning and learning?
It's so important to create a caring and compassionate learning environment - thank you https://t.co/5bj1hxXZTY
Our Ss forget most of what we teach them. But they will remember their teachers forever.Begood and kind to them
A5 Unlearning and Relearning is hard work! It takes confidence, failing and picking yourself up again.
A5: It's EVERYTHING. We must meet them where they are at, while remembering they come to us with mixed views of education.
A5-Mindset and perseverance can empower learners to take baby to bold steps toward risk-taking! https://t.co/THA1AAJFth
Q5: How can mindset and perseverance be factors in unlearning and learning?
Tt - Ss relationships are more important than the way we teach
A5: growth mindset + beyond! GRIT, FAIL, perseverance - all dispositions worth teaching/learning for life
A5 - We need to praise effort and process, not just product. There is no finish line!
A5: we must believe that all Ss and Ts can learn
A5) The willingness to learn + unlearn requires a commitment to growth. Push through the uncomfortable! https://t.co/xhtLKFoUnk
Q5: How can mindset and perseverance be factors in unlearning and learning?
A5: Mindset is the car, perseverance - the engine. Have to have both as neither one will work alone...
A5: you have to have growth mindset to be able to unlearn. It's easier to repeat a pattern than it is to change a habit.
A5: Make unlearning and relearning a part of daily practice to create a growth mindset!
The finish line is the closure, not where the learning happens! Celebrate new ideas along the trail. https://t.co/RzJ9Xx6rk1
A5 - We need to praise effort and process, not just product. There is no finish line!
A5: Changing a behavior is hard. Without a growth mindset, old habits will inevitably surface
Yes need to have a growth mindset that we can learn, unlearn, and relearn Thanks! https://t.co/xYPiUwb7Pi
A5: Make unlearning and relearning a part of daily practice to create a growth mindset!
Teachers and students must believe that they can change and grow, only then can they have an open mind.. https://t.co/aW2pfbunlR
A5: Changing a behavior is hard. Without a growth mindset, old habits will inevitably surface
- Great point! Must encourage S's to believe just because they haven't YET doesn't mean they won't EVENTUALLY.
A5. I believe that what we want for Ss we must want for ourselves and do. Growth mindset matters. Open to change & take risks.
A4: Need the right environment. One that encourages innovation.
I've never heard that before about mindset = car, perseverance = engine. Thank you! https://t.co/zzsjW8YDNo
A5: Mindset is the car, perseverance - the engine. Have to have both as neither one will work alone...
Q5: Mindset and perseverance play vital roles in change. Try, try and try again, develop and cultivate.
A5 - We need a TEAM to develop any mindset. We can't do it alone but learning and great habits are sustainable with a TEAM
A5 A growth mindset can occur best when students are free to be who they are and learn with freedom!
A5: Even ss who constantly struggle with materials and skills will fight to keep the same work and study habits.
Mark you keep coming up with great sayings. I love this!!! https://t.co/hIlnewdcZg
The finish line is the closure, not where the learning happens! Celebrate new ideas along the trail. https://t.co/RzJ9Xx6rk1
A5 - We need to praise effort and process, not just product. There is no finish line!
A5B; We must win the heart before we attempt to build upon the mind.
Yes TEAM: Together Everyone Learns More is a must in developing growth mindset https://t.co/DXImah7rWc
A5 - We need a TEAM to develop any mindset. We can't do it alone but learning and great habits are sustainable with a TEAM
Yes. Be comfortable w/ the uncomfortable. Grit & perseverance plays a role here. Not resistance to change.
Sometimes Ts have so much paperwork & bureaucracy - need to break free & say "I can do it- take risks" https://t.co/UqneA59D61
A5. I believe that what we want for Ss we must want for ourselves and do. Growth mindset matters. Open to change & take risks.
My favorite part about teaching! No project is "final" in my class, so they can still learn it:)
Sharing ways to encourage unconventional thinking in Q6.
In order to teach ss perseverance we should recognize failure as often as we do success.
Ss - Tt relationships are more important than rigor , relevance , tech. Ss will learn if they believe Ts care about them.
A5C; Begins with the power of belief. Wrote a short post about this very "magic" today.
A5 "anti-GRIT" is a learned behavior. Someone taught our students they can't or it is too hard. We need to cheer on the GRIT!
A5 KNOW YOUR STUDENTS. Build relationships, and offer choices that match them. Make sure they know why! https://t.co/dtMObHHkH6
I am so enjoying the convos in on perseverance & growth mindset about learn, unlearn, relearn -Wow!
Agreed. A barrier to change & doing what's best for Ss. "Accountability" as policing needs to get out of the way.
Q6 How do you get kids to think differently and outside the box?
Too true! Only when the relationship is in place can a student move from their comfort zones. https://t.co/mGmDrR1etP
Ss - Tt relationships are more important than rigor , relevance , tech. Ss will learn if they believe Ts care about them.
Please share the link to your post https://t.co/oGToUisGRS
A5C; Begins with the power of belief. Wrote a short post about this very "magic" today.
and that's what makes you awesome. Bet your S's love your class. Keep on rockin'
A6 To help students think outside of the box, we need to start by burning the box.
There is no such thing as failure
. relationships matter for Ss & Ts - build trust/respect creates compassionate, caring class https://t.co/vfGp4pfqoo
Ss - Tt relationships are more important than rigor , relevance , tech. Ss will learn if they believe Ts care about them.
A6 Ss should have to work differently, whether it is in different classroom configurations or diff. websites or diff. partners
A6: Stop giving them the "box" before the learning
A6 Create a trusting environment and then take them into the question / thinking pit https://t.co/181EKp83yl
Q6 How do you get kids to think differently and outside the box?
A6 Students are taught to give the correct answer. When I say there is no correct answer,my students crumble. They need permission.
You have such a unique way of saying things. Get the matches! Quick! https://t.co/m9G8npNyze
A6 To help students think outside of the box, we need to start by burning the box.
A6. Don't tell them how. Ask questions. Ss ask questions. Create & cultivate curiosity. Develop love for leaning. Ss decide how.
Great point! That is a huge shift for many. Let's honor the process--struggles and all. https://t.co/jZDH4kiYmB
In order to teach ss perseverance we should recognize failure as often as we do success.
Don't just say it's about the kids, make it about the kids.
A6: By not constantly providing answers. Or even Qs!
Trusting environment is so important - great idea to call it a question/thinking pit https://t.co/6oXyh2UiIE
A6 Create a trusting environment and then take them into the question / thinking pit https://t.co/181EKp83yl
Q6 How do you get kids to think differently and outside the box?
A6 Students have to Unlearn that the box exists. Sad, but true. Too many rules without creative minds.
A6: I throw away the box. Take a deep breath and say let's get started without boundaries.
A6: The box comes from our experiences, our learning. We need to let their learning shape their boxes, or lack of a box
A6. Scaffold the unlearning process; start from day 1 - Let them come in and design the classroom!
A6. Don't tell them how. Ask Qs. Ss ask Qs. Create & cultivate curiosity. Develop love for learning. Ss decide how.
Yes! This! https://t.co/vPdGFJ6oFU
A6: The box comes from our experiences, our learning. We need to let their learning shape their boxes, or lack of a box
Or that there is only ONE right box:(
