#NVedchat is dedicated to increasing communication and collaboration of education related topics in the State of Nevada. Originally, created by Mr. Snehal Bhakta.
Kevin from Indianapolis. I like the clean smell after a nighttime thunderstorm of the Midwest. The decreasing humidity in the middle of the summer adds to it. #NVedchat
Steve in NW Indiana (Chicago-ish). When we lived in LV I appreciated the rare cloudy day. Back in the midwest I'm at max cap for snow right now and I'm looking forward to soaking up some sun on the beach. #nvedchat
Exactly. One "size" or type of learning does not fit all. As educators, we have to provide a variety of opportunities in the hope of having #equity. #NVedchat
R1: This will come across maybe not the right way but equal isn’t always fair. Sometimes providing opportunities for certain populations isn’t going to seem EQUAL to others. #nvedchat
@LCHS_Bio I agree and sometimes I have to have this uncomfortable conversation with Ss, but I'm often surprised by 4th graders ability to comprehend this concept #NVedchat

R1: every experience for a child will be their opportunity unique to them. They need to take ownership of their learning with guidance from the adult in the classroom. #nvedchat
A1: Unfortunately, stereotypes still lead the way where STEM is concerned. I am glad to teach tech and STEM to show girls that we rock in STEM! #nvedchat
A2: I've read before that in a typical classroom boys often blurt out answers and takeover hands on materials before girls; being aware of this can help us build a classroom community that allows equal opportunity for participation and engagement #nvedchat
a3) It is important to have role models available that are close in age to the students. So they can see what is possible and develop proximal goals. #nvedchat
Q3: Many female & minority students express interest in #STEM but don't pursue college or careers in those fields. How can we ensure #STEM is for all students?
A3-Show them that it is possible. Highlight the role models and mentors that are out there. Sometimes they are hard to find, but showing them that they aren't the only ones will demonstrate that it is possible for them to be successful in #STEM. #NVedchat
Q3: Many female & minority students express interest in #STEM but don't pursue college or careers in those fields. How can we ensure #STEM is for all students?
R2: There are stereotypes developed by many generations that say women cannot accomplish and succeed in these fields. Look at #HiddenFigures as a road map to this. What truly has changed? Many stereotypes. #NVedchat
Q3: Many female & minority students express interest in #STEM but don't pursue college or careers in those fields. How can we ensure #STEM is for all students?
A3: I agree that finding diverse #stem role models can help all Ss see themselves as #stem learners. My school recently added many of these books on @edutopia list to our book room! #NVedchat
R3: For me, it's a matter of personal invitation. I will recommend girls in my math classes to take my engineering classes. It helps to have a relationship built first so I can connect the invite to areas of their interest or strength. #NVEdChat

A4: Right now we are building our robotics program. I am working with counselors for a more balanced M:F ratio next year. The girls I have are amazing! All the kiddos are. #nvedchat
A4-Reach out and get the community involved, especially female/minority professionals in #STEM. If students see others like them, then they are more likely to pursue it. #NVedchat
We have an awesome computer tech at our school who runs a fantastic robotics club after school- she is an amazing role model to all of our students, so lucky to have her! #NVedchat
R4: my former school partnered with @DowAgroUS to send Ss to @SHPE jr program in Maryland, Seattle, and Kansas City. The opportunity for our Hispanic and Latino Ss to learn from experts from similar backgrounds was great. Even better is it is all inclusive for all Ss #NVedchat
Thank you for joining tonight’s #NVedchat on Equity in Education, specifically in #STEM. Don’t forget to follow us and all the great tweeters from tonight.
#NVedchat Tika, here a little late. A1 Equity in Education means "fair isn't always equal." Every teacher also needs to build relationships and not make assumptions about any of our students. #growthmindset
R4: My wife co-founded a non-profit that pairedmiddle school girls in our community with professional mentors in STEM fields. The organization is now closed but some of the girls (now in college) still credit that experience with leading them to pursue a stem major. #NVEdChat
#NVedchat A2 Female students may be under-represented, but I know in CCSD girls are highly encouraged to enroll in STEM and STEAM classes as well as our Magnet and Tech Schools. My daughter is a proud member of the first class of Cashman Middle School AMSAT:)
A2 A2 #stem topics are not always represented as options for girls, or they can become discouraged easily when there are few girls interested. #NVedchat
#NVedchat A4 #STEM field trips are the MOB museum, the Children's Museum, and to the Container Park. Activities include room transformations and hands-on performance tasks. I also love seeing the art projects in so many of our schools that support STEAM (water bottle art).
Case in point today I picked up my four year old daughter from pre-school she was the only girl at the building table, she is feisty & fights for building pieces she wants, proudly explained her structure to me. But I sat there for a minute, she was the only girl #NVedchat
