Welcome to #ATchat. Our topic tonight is Rethinking Microsoft as AT. Microsoft has been late to the game but they are now aggressively moving into the Education market. Looking forward to an interesting conversation tonight.
#Microsoftedu had a strong presence at CTG, ATIA and especially at CSUN in San Diego last week.
This was just published today - integrating OER curricula into Office 365 apps. #ATchathttps://t.co/2j2LuCnCuf
I am glad students have more options. I have some questions regarding new tools. Looking forward to asking them tonight. I will read this after the #atchat tonight.

A1: I hope it means more students have acess to these tools. My main concern is the implementation of them. Without proper implementation the tools won't be used. Also Office 365 only works online correct? If so what are the implications of this #atchat
A1: I think office 365 is a a great way to give access to all students with many similar features to google docs. Personal 365 accounts allow you not only access to the online suite but to the full featured desktop apps not sure if school accounts are the samr #atchat
I agree-Implementation is critical with ANY tool. Office 365 (and G-Suite apps) will work offline. Then your work syncs when you connect to the Internet #Atchat
A1 I am very interested in seeing what is available from Microsoft for students with disabilities. Where can we find descriptions of what they are offering? #atchat
I’m fairly new to assistive technology and how it’s being used in schools, let alone for individuals who can’t speak or need help showing how they’re feeling so I was very intrigued to see what #ATchat would help me learn!

Have you tried the text-to-speech function offline? I tried it and didn't see it as an option. But it may be the special Florida State version I have. #atchat
Wish I could join you. My 97 year old mother broke her hip, and I am providing her in home therapy. Check out how she participated in Palm Sunday services via live streaming. Will catch up with the discussion later. AT rocks! #ATchat

Yup, I had no interest in #microsoftedu until I saw them present at CTG, ATIA and CSUN - so many great features. I'm definitely rethinking implementation. #ATchat
q2: Still learning about them but I am happy the tools are built into the system and the options like speed and color can be customized. Does anyone know if you can correct the pronunciation of text-to-speech for certain words? #atchat
Not sure. I don’t think the colors are customizable either, like in Immersive Reader. The one unique feature of Immersive Reader that is EXTREMELY useful is the syllabication tool. It’s great for kids still working on phonics skills. #ATchat

Right? We have been F/Timing her great granddaughter in CT, and her son in NY. Can’t wait to read the Microsoft discussion. It blew me away at ATIA #ATchat@ATIAorg@MSFTaccess

I'm just now starting to redrink the #microsoft koolaid. I don't have any districts using it but I'm rethinking. It has a lot of use for instruction. #ATchat
Some of the color coding is good for parsing out the different parts of speech in sentances. Also, students can look at well written sentances and see different grammatical comments in colors and model there sentance structure after that. #atchat
I can see using the color coding to structure lessons on conventions of standard English looking at digital mentor texts that could be viewed in the tools or perhaps using it as a tool to self-check student writing for verb use, adjective use, etc #atchat
A3: I have not used the sway form and did not find the office one too helpful. But I might just have supper technical questions regarding text-to-speech #atchat
Personally, at least for students with #dyslexia and other #LD, I think the @Microsoft tool with the most AT promise is the onscreen Touch Keyboard of Windows 10 - it has dictation, word prediction, AND handwriting recognition. Would love to see TTS added to that. #atchat
Be careful, though. All the research that Karen Erickson has done that shows symbol supported text can be a detriment to literacy skill development https://t.co/HrCk6S3oQq#atchat
#atchat curious because I see so many ways teachers and students can use to highlight/annotate etc for close reading. I'm just not seeing much of it really happening. I don't know if it that people don't understand close reading or how to use tools or how to combine both!
I have been working with Microsoft education for many years now, and my passion for #assistivetech really came from my exposure in the Microsoft Hackathon a few years back when we created Learning Tools. I love the ability to help people of all abilities at scale. #ATChat
My teachers work on annotating in a variety ways with students including highlighting! Snap and Read, Read and Write for Google and Kami are all great tools for annotations. So important for close reading! Best way to help students locate the text evidence they need #atchat
From my experiences working students and professors they may know how to guide close reading on paper but the implementation of it in digital way is more challenging. Also some instructors (like biology instructors) don't know how to teach this #atchat

#ATchat my children attend HS@LWWestWarriors that is using Office 365 , it’s been a learning curve from past platforms. Excited about new #accessibility features #Atchat
I'm anticipating the future - people talk about the advantage of print and ability to visualize text on the page after reading, that is lost online but with color coding, that could change. #ATchat
#ATchat Q4: I LOVE using office lens. I like the ability to scan a document, send it to OneNote so that they can have it read back to them with immersive reader.
Seeing AI is really an amazing tool. a bit glitchy at times but incredible potential for on the fly decoding, tts of both text and handwriting. #ATchat
A4: I frequently use and absolutely ADORE, #OfficeLens and the #MicrosoftTranslator is hands down the best there is. Real-time translation and very accurate. #ATchat

Nice to see, the way @MicrosoftEDU is helping educators around the world by providing wonderful tools, which can be used/integrated in classroom teaching easily! #ATChat
I certainly will relook at @MicrosoftEDU again! I need to see how Office 365 functions on Chromebooks since schools have invested so heavily in them. #atchat
The depth of features available in these tools deserves another look. Plus, all the web based tools work on the CB. I am using them now on mine! #ATchat

When you are in a lab working on research with everyone at the table from a different country with a different language these tools are critical. But some incorrect translations lead to problems from time to time. #atchat
A5. We have been using most of these @MicrosoftEDU Tools/Apps here at @YCISBJ. Unfortunately, few important features are not yet available in Mac. @mtholfsen, please help us and release Mac update with Learning Tools in @OneNoteEDU ClassNoteBooks. #ATChat

I’ve started experimenting with handwriting recognition / OCR with graphic novels. Until now, they were inaccessible. Handwriting recognition may be the #AssistiveTech breakthrough that makes them readable for everyone. #ATchat
