I'm Shauna, an author, educator and consultant in Toronto. I'm not afraid of too much, but eels give me the heebie jeebies!
my daughter was introduced to tech education by her amazing 5th grade teacher and it influenced me to look into tech more
what about being buried alive
I have a similar one. I'm back in HS. I missed a whole semester of classes and am sitting down for the exam.
Now that I think about it, I’m pretty sure I’m afraid of sharks. Yeah, that’d be a huge one.
Jeremy, parent and education communications professional from Connecticut.
AH! I can’t count how many times I’ve had it. Such panic. Then relief.
I think about being buried alive all the time
I'm Lee, an instructional tech coach from NY, and my greatest fear is that the WiFi will be down at one of my buildings.
One T can make the difference!
well I am wearing glitter pants while being buried alive
a justifiable response, but not a justifiable excuse.
A1: Fear is the THE WORST response to digital age tech and tools. Get information instead of falling for fear mongering.
A1 fear is the mind killer. Father the sleeper has awaken
An excellent distinction. Fear can't stop us from moving forward https://t.co/sI8953YSkQ
a justifiable response, but not a justifiable excuse.
GAGA borrowed my red glitter outfit. I am waiting for it to be returned
A1) Fear is a feeling, which isn't justified or unjustified. It is understandable. Change is scary. https://t.co/6MnjoFrn31
A1: fear is the comfortable response, change is inevitable and it's how we embrace it. Tech is the new target for naysayers
A1 fear slows down learning. Dump fear to the curb
A1: I think fear is a natural response to any change, but we mustn't mistake fear as reason to abort a mission.
Also, fear begets more fear. Maybe they've been misinformed and believe the negatives they've heard.
A1(cont’d): I always harken back 2 the fact that we’d never accept fear as an excuse from our Ss or children. Why others?
Whoa! Neither did I till you pointed it out! Do they make the US flag?
We poke fun at how the past viewed modern meds, the internet, even checks, at what point do we learn
not mismatched. They are the flag
On a personal level I agree, but we can't discredit the fear of other's in the process. https://t.co/iwJEz2RAhO
A1 fear slows down learning. Dump fear to the curb
ATTENTION! ATTENTION Lee came to play tonight! Great quote
A1: Fear, no. Awareness, yes. It is imperative that we be aware of tech & how it impacts teaching, learning & overall- life
Thanks, Zac! I don't hold back. ;-)
we should help them over come fear. Must trust and take a leap
Long Island FTW! I’m originally from East Setauket!
A1: I think fear can be of the unknown for some. Learning about the possibilities can provide is important
strength and trust is the power of the Darkside. Thank you very much
A1: With change comes resistance...fear is resistance manifested into something negative and more powerful.
Evening ladies and gents! Chris, NJ & host of podcast checking in for some
Dump to the curb the pride & prejudice that can result from fear! https://t.co/RJPNIoUBNu
On a personal level I agree, but we can't discredit the fear of other's in the process. https://t.co/iwJEz2RAhO
A1 fear slows down learning. Dump fear to the curb
Starting w why and how can improve S learning can win over those in fear https://t.co/wajbHcBjZO
A1: I think fear can be of the unknown for some. Learning about the possibilities can provide is important
A2 blog your story. Tweet pictures. Pin ideas
. A1had to adapt to everything digital. especially when my daughter started to need help the fear of not being able to help
Hey Chris thanks for joining us
Love the convo at tonight, but I'm losing steam in my 3rd chat of the night. Signing off! See you next time!
happy to be here! Just got home from a long day!
A2: Overflow positivity. The world has enough haters. “This doesn’t work. That doesn’t work.” Showcase greatness
A1 I'm still learning along with my daughter she is so smart with the tech digital world. she creates a lot with tech
A2: Focusing on the why is essential, if our “pitch” to the resistance is that’s a great “gimmick” we lose all credibility
A2: We are the music makers and we are the dreamers of dreams.
If you want to impact the story then have an impact on it.
A2: How Ts model response to is so important!
A2:Avoid seeking community "advice" on Edtech! We are the professionals! Offer the community your insight & your expertise.
I agree! Ts who model anything poorly are doing a disservice to Ss
We must avoid the bells 'n' whistles approach
. How can you be a good tech model for Ts and Ss?
Seek professional advice period. Don't ride on the whims of the community https://t.co/S2N9OaNGag
A2:Avoid seeking community "advice" on Edtech! We are the professionals! Offer the community your insight & your expertise.
A2) Non-teacher here. Is controlling the narrative the goal? Or working with students to create it? https://t.co/c2UdU5lKa0
A2: SHOW YOUR WORK!
Share the crap out of every digital thing you do!
Brag about your Ss, Ts and school!!
A2: With tech there's usually instant buy-in before evaluation & qualitative testing. It becomes "keeping up with the Jones
As said, “A Doctor wouldn’t survey his patients to see if they were healthier”
A2: by showing why edtech is important and how it can impact our students
Agreed. Oftentimes the “problem” can be such a small bubble of minutiae, yet, it’s enough to halt mindset
depends on the students. Having Ss input is crucial and they are often overlooked when making decisions
Get Ss using 😄 Seeing their Ts use socmedia for good inspires them to do more than selfies https://t.co/V0GqJXKbzl
. How can you be a good tech model for Ts and Ss?
. my daughter drew some pictures and brought it to life using her DS looked like a cartoon
A2: Ts can be the voice of positivity for sure! Love showing my Ss & team my learning process with - makes it real
Controlling the narrative in edu space WITH Ss, not in spite of them. Some stakeholders’ viewpoints r skewed
These kids are braving the great unknown! Pay attention, world. We're trailblazers! https://t.co/zfHQwjbVzh
A2: SHOW YOUR WORK!
Share the crap out of every digital thing you do!
Brag about your Ss, Ts and school!!
ok. It makes sense if we're talking about changing the narrative in a way that doesn't induce and reduces fear.
A3: Tools of transparency. Windows into what we can DO with , not bells/whistles. Class Youtube, communication, etc
A3: Empower Ps and Community members. Schools are places for learning - invite them for a Tech Night.
A3: Supply parents & community stakeholders w/ workshops & participation/engagement activities.
A3: Collaborate with other community ctrs - library, senior ctr, recreation dept. - and get all people learning!
A2: control the narrative by providing tools/space for Ss to connect and grow, while walking beside and guiding
A3: and are great resources that approach media openly and honestly. Plus it's user friendly!
it also helps them see the value in social media and importance of "netiquette"
If a P thinks the narrative is “here’s an iPad, now learn,” we’ve failed them.
A3: Support, communication & sharing. Creating a culture of transparency between stakeholders & ownership of responsibility
Love the term "netiquette" https://t.co/ZrvKBBSbC6
it also helps them see the value in social media and importance of "netiquette"
Showing anyone the value is the battle we face w/anything
Schools and districts should invest in the entire community - Seems weird right?
ah I know it's been in a while. Saw your tweet joining the chat and I hopped right on!
A3: A classroom website with a lot of information, links to useful websites, a twitter feed, and more app suggestions.
It takes a village! Why not make the village global with ?
Not weird at all https://t.co/Gp7PIDKIWP
Schools and districts should invest in the entire community - Seems weird right?
After all we ask the community to invest in the schools? Technically we owe it to them to provide more than test scores
A3) Students! They're liaisons. Ease parents' minds by including them. Share your classroom online. https://t.co/qrM5x8H6e7
Welcome aboard! Hope you don’t mind random gifs in the middle of our chats.
I have a S teaching MANY other Ss email and social media etiquette, and she's only a junior!
no doubt, you teach more than students.
A3 leads a Parent University on ! Parents love the opportunity to become digitally literate!
A3: Knowledge is power 😀 Having Ss share experiences w/ helps show the importance in today's classroom. All in!!
Learning from the very users who use the technology the most? Whaaaaaaat?
And literacy is more than just books :-)
My district is hosting parent tech conf w an "expo" area for Ss to showcase work. Great opp for all https://t.co/2W07NSryxH
A3: Empower Ps and Community members. Schools are places for learning - invite them for a Tech Night.
Sometimes we have to educate the parents, too; the non technical parent isn't able to help the Ss.
This is absolutely true, and yet undermined by the “it won’t be on the test” argument :(
Super cool! When is that happening? Is there only 1 night or multiple?
This may seem silly but the infrastructure has to be there, if Ps can’t get online with the tech at home, they won’t buy in
and 's Geek Squad are perfect examples of this revolution! https://t.co/VeHhXYH7c2
Learning from the very users who use the technology the most? Whaaaaaaat?
I just may steal this idea! Awesome!
Education and understanding! Elem parents often see iPads and tech as synonymous with "games".
You pay taxes. Ask them for it. :-)
Their tech savvy + Ts' experience and wisdom should = a win for all.
I've said it time and again, school would be great except for the tests... :-D
I think you may have some Ss who agree ;)
Student-led PD for teachers and student-led tech workshops for parents.
An amazing learning experience for all involved!!
My 6th-8th gr. Ss published their own iTunes U course full of tech help for Ts and others! - https://t.co/HcE04zhcGV
Tech literacy vs info literacy
happy to be here with this great crew. I'll keep this on my radar for the future.
Glad you’re here with us!
A4: There will always be madness. Look at the 1/2 century long battle on school reform in general. Education needs to...>
Students can teach the technology and teachers can infuse the pedagogy... Match made in heaven https://t.co/1TVmAlmN53
Student-led PD for teachers and student-led tech workshops for parents.
An amazing learning experience for all involved!!
A4: (cont.) continue promoting effective integration and teaching the skills that will make Ss successful in a tech world
Preach, I said this the other day, “we are expertly preparing our Ss for the world…of 1960” https://t.co/CKlS0aefYt
A4: There will always be madness. Look at the 1/2 century long battle on school reform in general. Education needs to...>
A4: I think it’s changing course all the time. We were once blaming Ford for inventing cars—the downfall of our youth!
Yes! Even students as young as my third graders can put on an awesome presentation. https://t.co/Hx0XSREqat
Student-led PD for teachers and student-led tech workshops for parents.
An amazing learning experience for all involved!!
It gets Ps into it. Tho when it's not a school-wide practice, we're disappointed when it ends.
As said, there will always be madness!
A4You can't reason w madness. Instead, find the "movables";sell them on the "why" & accept that there will always be crazy.
We can be proactive and write the story or we can be reactive and put out fires, either way we’re together in this
Just imagine all the happy-face and positive hand-gesture emojis for this one. https://t.co/DSDb0gbsYA
Student-led PD for teachers and student-led tech workshops for parents.
An amazing learning experience for all involved!!
A4: At one time even the calculator was new tech....that died down. Something new will always come along to be mad about.
A4: there will always be some kind of madness. Embrace it.
I love when I hear, “Kids just look up the answers on their phones now.” Well, what are you going to do about it?
“What do I do about kids playing on their device”…Plan a better lesson
A3: Parents/stakeholders need faith that teachers will protect and guide their children in edtech world. Relationships
Love that. We should start asking better questions then. https://t.co/qmACr0TMt5
I love when I hear, “Kids just look up the answers on their phones now.” Well, what are you going to do about it?
Instead, focus on the fact that tech allows us to witness a Ss processing skills like never before! https://t.co/Pp5YGQzcdN
I love when I hear, “Kids just look up the answers on their phones now.” Well, what are you going to do about it?
Drill + Kill instruction—I’m sorry, someone please…do you have the heart to tell it it’s fired?
A4: "Madness" will probably continue... Learning to go with the flow&embrace the changes is important. Adapting & thriving
Absolutely! If you’re worried about kids googling the answer, you’re doing it wrong.
They are using skills that never existed before!
Q5: When met with resistance to change from community or within how should a school respond? https://t.co/13LwOQwCTc
If the answer is a quick google, the question needs to change.
This is an excellent point—while building on skills we still teach!
But, Julie, they won't know the joys of searching through a Rolodex?!
A4: when there is a revolution, there will be opposition. Lead by example-ignite passion in Ss and it will be contagious
A5 In response to community resistance to schools should do what they do best - !
a5: Should the school be the constant? Tech is used for learning, creativity, collaboration and innovation. Why change?
Worksheets on iPads r still worksheets!Anyone can consume content.Use tech tools to CREATE content!
https://t.co/RSQ5IWTrIk
I wouldn't say the wrong answers are wrong but if that's where you start that's great!
A5:A school's response is informed by its implementation. If they fail to implement w purpose they will fail their response
A5: School should not waver in tech/learning goals due to poor survey results or frustration.
A5: resistance to change happens when people don't buy in. Show them why/how and all the awesome ways tech impacts students
Q6: Our final question… What will you do tomorrow to calm the anxiety in the hearts and minds of those with EDTECHMADNESS
Have a plan to begin with & get buy-in FIRST before chance to resist https://t.co/fez7CNsjtY
A5: resistance to change happens when people don't buy in. Show them why/how and all the awesome ways tech impacts students
A5: of course listen to concerns, and then do what you need to do in the best interest of Ss. The goal isn't to please Ps
Plant the seeds among T Leaders, huge key to implementation success https://t.co/YJtxd53ph7
Have a plan to begin with & get buy-in FIRST before chance to resist https://t.co/fez7CNsjtY
A5: resistance to change happens when people don't buy in. Show them why/how and all the awesome ways tech impacts students
Also, 1:1 plan survey data ALWAYS takes immersion and testing to see growth. Why do beta tests exist?
Pleasing Ps just leads to a boom in the trophy and ribbon industry
This is my favorite quote all night.
A5: with same response given for other expectations. Resources for those less experienced, and encouragement to T unwilling
and they should. Tech isn't a benefit on its own. It's the tool. You still have to know how to use it.
A6: Open lines of communication and not seeing naysaying as a roadblock but a challenge
Its been a great chat we hope it stirred your mind to action. Dont forget to follow ur favs and connect with your PLN daily
A6 's mission: calm anxiety by helping schools plan, develop, and collaborate with the community.
A6: Tech tip Tuesday newsletters, ' idea of "snack n share" tech meetings after school
I would love to connect with many of you as I am always looking for great stories to share on the podcast
pleasing them in what way is your concern? How does that relate to tech?
A6; Keep on Keepin' on! I'll be the change I want to see in the world. Keep creating responsible, global, digital citizens.
Follow on ! All resources shared are curated and easily accessible!
Thanks for a great conversation
Too many districts back off moving forward because there is push back from Ps. That hurts Ss in the long run.
What an AWESOME chat tonight!! I'm so glad I participated. Thanks for moderating, Zac!
we will be in touch for sure!
A5: Continue to educate about . should be implemented and active. Ss are beneficiaries - always!
TY all for an awesome chat! Thank you also to the new followers. I love connecting!
Huge thanks to the always dashing for moderating, and to for co modding with me!
A6 Set up "tech" office hours for staff and parents.
We might have a guest moderator next week, I just had a cool idea lets see if it plays out…
A6) Keep using it. Just be a model. Barriers are from within. You can't push people to your side. https://t.co/XDjQZFY8wS
Q6: Our final question… What will you do tomorrow to calm the anxiety in the hearts and minds of those with EDTECHMADNESS
I'm "on your side" on tech but I'll push back a little on Ps being a barrier...
Thanks for swimming by , hope to see you next week :)
