Welcome to #flipclass we are talking “The role of class time” tonight. But first introduce yourself, subject, level, yrs flipping? What did or will you do the the first couple days of summer break #flipclass#flipclasschat
#flipclass#flipclasschat Hello I am matthew from IL and I teach HS math and have flipped for 6 years or so. I do construction in the summer and am reminded why I went to college
Hi there #flipclass and #flipclasschat!
Andrew from Mass. (gr. 8 SocSt) nearing the end of 5th year flipping but we still have 3 weeks to go....
The first days of "break" I will be prepping for #FlipTechEd#FTEC18!
a1: I usually have 80 mins. Students come in complete a warmup activity. I am asynchronous flipped so everyone is all at different spots in the pacing guide. #flipclass#flipclasschat
A1: I have 51 min class periods. On vid days, there is some sort of warm-up, then vid, then practice. On non-vid days, warm-up, activity, and closure. #flipclass#flipclasschat
So do you do the flipped mastery approach? I tried that with math last year using Standards Based Grading and doing grade conferences. #flipclass#flipclasschat
Yes, as much as possible.
I make sure they know the basics of a topic before we have deeper discussions and/or analyze related primary sources and/or conduct research for projects, etc.
#flipclass#flipclasschat
I love the elementary flip. It is almost always an in-flip varietey but Elem are masters at "centers" and flip fits that mold so well. #flipclass#flipclasschat
My goal is to figure out to do something like this in #physed classroom. Want my students to be more self directing. Love this concept. Would love to keep connecting and growing with you. #flipclass#flipclasschat
85 min blocks with A and B Days. We spend about 15 min reviewing previous class’s concepts and then either in-class flip or regular flip depending on the S and do activities, collaboration...whatever we need. #flipclass
A2: I don't have many year-long ironclad routines for #flipclass ... making changes throughout the year as my Ss seem to need them, and to fit curriculum topics
#FlipClassChat
a2: For me it is self predicting their score before each mastery check. They predict how they will do, self grade, and then re-assess. I found that this routine is best way to get Ss to own their grade. #flipclass#flipclasschat
I normally have 70 minutes in a class. Just started flipping it in earnest recently. Here is a pic from today; the first day of class. #flipclasschat#flipclass
A2b -- maybe all of them?!
I waver back and forth between in-class and out-of-class assessment for students' mastery-level understanding.
Pros and cons for both....
#flipclass#flipclasschat
A2b: I would like to work on having better warmup activities to work on number sense. Also want better routines for peer feedback. #flipclass#flipclasschat
A1: I normally have 70 minutes in a class. Just started flipping it in earnest recently. Here is a pic from today; the first day of class. #flipclasschat#flipclass
Yes. I thought about doing the "Give Me Five" From #learnlap@PaulSolarz Even like the idea of empower students to interrupt class to share something meaningful. #flipclass#flipclasschat
A2: The things I have added in are video lessons, video/audio/written discussion posts, podcasts, a digital portfolio, and a lot of student driven activities. #flipclass#flipclasschat
A2: Last year I didn’t have a really good routine! Usually a self led @PearDeck & an embedded @playposit I want to get better at screen casting content and also have a library on a site for students to start with according to need & student interests! #flipclasschat#flipclass
REALLY want to use @seesaw next year. I know @andburnett123 used it with his kids in maths class to help with #gradeless class. I think would helped in a #flipclass environment to show learning and communicate that home. #flipclasschat

I like that it can be teacher or student led and you can embed questions into it as well! Allows for that in the moment formative assessment! @nearpod is another similar resource! #FlipClassChat#FlipClass

I do it based on proficiency standards. Level 2 is the video and simple worksheet. Level 3 builds on level 2. And level 4, the A material, that’s for the Ss to research or design an activity for. #flipclass#flipclasschat
Cool. Played around with edpuzzle but our network firewall kept blocking it :( Maybe I will give @playposit a try. Also thought about having students leave reflection questions in @youtube video stream #flipclasschat#flipclass

A3: Need to be more mindful of the amount of time it takes to get activities done. Also need to have systems to help motivate students to stay on task on activities. I found that most of my students fell behind in the pacing guide. #flipclasschat#flipclass
A4 This is where both non-linear learning, asynchronos learning, and mastery really shine in that there is always something to be learned and done. #flipclass#flipclasschat
Feel the same way. I usually felt like I couldn't get them to even be ready for the "next Thing" Most of my students were so behind that no one really was ever done early. #flipclasschat#flipclass
A4: If the learning goal has been met, I don't worry about everything being finished. If we finish early, I try to have the next thing ready to go. #flipclass#flipclasschat
A4: I have a space in my classroom that has extension activities! Puzzles, lego sets, several @SpheroEdu , a thermal camera, books, other fun science toys that spark curiosity! I also set up extension challenges for Ss to work on linked to the content! #flipclasschat#flipclass
a4: I want to try to have a puzzle table next year. Want to have ways for my students to have #brainbreaks. Spaces where they can clear their mind or just stretch and move a little bit. #flipclasschat#flipclass
So you have a hard deadline in your class? I did flipped mastery. I did try to gather a group of students who where on the same topic and review with them. #flipclasschat#flipclass
I tried @nearpod but didn't like it. I keep hearing people talk about how they use it in their class. I think I need to give it another chance. #flipclasschat#flipclass

I had 1 class last year that was 40 minuets. Its so hard to get students going and by the time you do you feel like you have to wrap up. #flipclasschat#flipclass

A5: Timing has been & still is one of my challenges. Self-pacing helps. Over-planning helps. The hardest days have been when something hasn't taken as long as I expected & I have extra time. #flipclass#flipclasschat
A3: Activities are chosen by learning objectives first and by matching task to goals. Deeper topics get more things like graphic organizers and discussions. Formative assessments also help focus areas of attention. #flipclass#flippedclasschat
A5: This is the first year I have truly done in class flip and I struggled with the timing & how some students really would go back and process while others did not as much! Need to get some student voice at beginning of next year to see what they think! #flipclass#flipclasschat
I am curious how many other teachers Flip in their building? this was my first year and I found that I was fighting a culture battle for most of the year. #flipclasschat#flipclass
