A1 Taking a closer look at independent seatwork is critical when it reflects a travesty of packets & time-wasting nothing. We must re-evaluate how we expend our time & energy. #G2Great

A1 great question btw! Ts need to look at seatwork and see that it’s meaningful and purposeful. Not just filler. Ask yourselves, “What’s the point of doing this.” What is the truly the purpose. #G2Great

  • svalter80 Jul 5 @ 8:37 PM EDT
A1: Independent seat work often falls into the category of “the way it’s always been done.” We need to ask ourselves how (if) this work truly showcases the thinking/learning Ss are capable of doing. #G2Great

Independent application is such an important consideration. How can we engage kids in meaningful purposeful productive AND authentic reading and writing? #G2Great
  • jerhende Jul 5 @ 8:39 PM EDT
A1: what is more authentic for students to be doing? Our instruction and activities should always be rooted in things that can be replicated in the real world #g2great

Okay now I’m happy. Hi Johnny! #G2Great
  • ThoughtfulRead Jul 5 @ 8:39 PM EDT

  • MelanieMeehan1 Jul 5 @ 8:40 PM EDT
Melanie from CT. Looking forward to some #g2great learning!
  • mollienye72 Jul 5 @ 8:40 PM EDT
A1: 1)how are you gauging “independence”? 2)Would there be an alternative way of allowing Ss to work on growing as learners 3)is the work authentic? I know that’s 3?s, but I’m passionate about changing the mindset. #g2great
  • KymHarjes Jul 5 @ 8:40 PM EDT
A1: Critical for teachers to remember & believe that THE most authentic form of “seatwork” we can offer is simply reading & writing...with conferring to guide & instruct the process #G2Great
  • DrMaryHoward - Moderator Jul 5 @ 8:40 PM EDT
    Mission accomplished ❤️ #G2Great

  • NowakRo Jul 5 @ 8:40 PM EDT
A1 How is this seatwork relevant and how will it push students to deepen their learning? A second wuestion would be, how were students given a choice and a voice in their work. In a time of heavy research, we need to focus on our kids, not graphs. #g2great
  • DrMaryHoward - Moderator Jul 5 @ 8:41 PM EDT
A1 Independent seatwork affords us freedom to offer instructional support in small groups/one-to-one. But ALL Sts including those working independently should benefit from the experience. #G2Great
  • franmcveigh Jul 5 @ 8:41 PM EDT
Love that, Tracey. Wish my friend @DyanSundermeyer was here to add the perfect "turkey dinner" meme! #G2Great

A1: I guess I define "seat work" as the things that we want to tackle with quiet, reflective thinking. It doesn't require meaningless packet work by definition. #g2great

  • IdeaShopPD Jul 5 @ 8:41 PM EDT
It’s what I call work that takes sooo long to explain and kids finish it in no time. Just. Like. Cooking. A. Turkey. Dinner. #g2great
  • LRobbTeacher Jul 5 @ 8:41 PM EDT
A 2 My WHY is to develop readers, students read self-selected books. If you want students to write, let them choose topics write & offer feedback & teach craft & technique. #g2great
  • DrMaryHoward - Moderator Jul 5 @ 8:41 PM EDT
LOVE both of those Roman (and especially love when I look up at my screen and see your face ❤️ #G2Great

Why is the greatest question we could ever ask kids. Building those text to self connections make teaching 100x easier because there is buy in #G2Great
  • ThoughtfulRead Jul 5 @ 8:42 PM EDT
A1: Is it engaging? @EllinKeene has some great attributes of engagement... #G2Great

A1 Is this the most authentic, engaging way this can be done? #G2Great
  • jerhende Jul 5 @ 8:42 PM EDT
A1: if we are using worksheets and such to keep students busy so we can do groups and 1:1, then we need to think about more meaningful things they can be doing. Like reading #g2great
  • franmcveigh Jul 5 @ 8:43 PM EDT
A2. WHY on earth would a T ever assign "Seatwork" ala something to be checked for "busy work" creating a problem with "requiring Ss to do it and the T to check it. #G2Great
  • Jreaderwriter Jul 5 @ 8:43 PM EDT
I love this question. It’s one I ask myself often. #G2Great

  • bsepe7 Jul 5 @ 8:44 PM EDT
A1: Tricky waters here...this assumes that my teaching partner in this case wants to engage in dialogue about this topic. A scaling question would work here,”on a scale of 1-5 (5 being most effective) where would you rate this work in relation to your ideal outcomes?” #G2Great
  • DrMaryHoward - Moderator Jul 5 @ 8:44 PM EDT
I’m so glad you included the ownership role Kurt. Too often we see it as something we do when the real power comes from having choice and engaging kids in that process! #G2Great

A2: Used to be because the Daily 3/5 or whatever told me too... now it is to get Ss working on skills to develop as readers while I'm free to meet in 1-1 or small groups #G2Great
  • johnnydowney Jul 5 @ 8:45 PM EDT
A2 I don’t love seat work and when I go back into the classroom I won’t be doing anything that looks or smells like seat work. Why? Because there is something better my Ss will be doing. Reading! #g2great
  • DrMaryHoward - Moderator Jul 5 @ 8:45 PM EDT
If we don’t know our WHY then how can we hope for it to truly have an impact. I love that point Liza! #G2Great
  • emilyfranESL Jul 5 @ 8:45 PM EDT

  • vrkimmel Jul 5 @ 8:46 PM EDT
A2 My why is actually a "how". How is the work I'm asking kids to do moving them forward in transferring reading strategy(ies) and thoughtful reader response writing? Is this work they're engaged in moving them toward being more independent readers/writers? #G2Great

  • KymHarjes Jul 5 @ 8:47 PM EDT
A2: when I ask Ss to work independently, I offer plenty of choice...as they read/write, some will choose to reflect in written form, others will wait to talk over their reflections during conferring or SGI #G2great
  • MrsPalmer23 Jul 5 @ 8:47 PM EDT
A1 The seatwork has to be meaningful and intentional. My question as we begin to reflect is how can we put systems in place to build routines that allow rotation of activity, perhaps weekly, so Ss stay engaged but have variety?#G2great
  • IdeaShopPD Jul 5 @ 8:47 PM EDT

A6 Offer them choices. For young kids #makerspace and #Geniushour facilitated or reading and writing that makes sense to them. Authentic, creative and NOT a program that promotes conformity and compliance. Ok my “rants” done @DrMaryHoward #G2Great
  • missbarton27 Jul 5 @ 9:18 PM EDT
A6: being a student now allows me to reflect upon the monotony of “busy work.” Right now we’re learning about digital literacy in a classroom and I would be excited to allow students to creatively reflect through blogs or social media #g2great
  • TraceyAnanmalay Jul 5 @ 9:19 PM EDT
Like all those ideas, though I think there is a place for "quiet", the work done in our own heads..in a seat...somewhere. #G2Great

A6 The replacement is Problem Based Learning- students investigate a problem they see as relevant to their world and work to solve it. No fake engagement, No worksheets to create, unending enthusiasm and authentic value #g2great

A6- I really enjoy the Layered Curriculum approach that gives kids a menu of options and allows them to work together. #G2Great
  • dubioseducator Jul 5 @ 9:19 PM EDT
Love it! Just tweeted something so similar #G2Great
  • DrMaryHoward - Moderator Jul 5 @ 9:20 PM EDT
A6 We must always ponder whether what we ask kids to do affords purposeful opportunities to reinforce & apply (thus transfer) what they already know. #G2Great
  • vrkimmel Jul 5 @ 9:20 PM EDT
What's baffling to me is that just allowing kids to simply respond in writing, discuss with peers requires so little "prep" work for the teacher and allows the T to move around gathering valuable information and opportunities to confer. #whatgives #g2great

A7. Independent means a S can do the task without any assistance. If this is true, then I wonder if the child is being nudged or challenged to push a bit harder? Why not give it a go with more R and/or W - not less because the S has to do busy work. #G2Great
  • IdeaShopPD Jul 5 @ 9:21 PM EDT
A6: I want classroom libraries that look and feel like book stores. With kids and adults putting the right books into each other’s hands based on reading passion, interest and needs. #g2great
  • KymHarjes Jul 5 @ 9:21 PM EDT
A6: any opportunity that gives Ss a chance to explore/discover/grow their interests is worthwhile...whether it’s pouring through a bin of books, jotting ideas on post-its, investigating on chromebooks or talking with others...this approach to nurturing the learner works #G2Great
  • LRobbTeacher Jul 5 @ 9:21 PM EDT
A 6 It has to be authentic! Every class, content subjects too, needs diverse well stocked class libraries! Immerse Ss in the best books and writing! #g2great

My 5 year old who loved school and his pre-k teacher asked if he would still have so many worksheets once he moved to kindergarten. Even young ones know when the learning is not authentic!

#G2Great I finally bit bullet &set up Edmodo for S book clubs for last book of yr. They LOVED it! After initial excitement abt the instant msg ability, Ss were able to dig deep and pose ?s for grp members as well as comment on notable events/lines. Need to find ways to integrate.

I’m independent, but I need my PLN to help me along, too! I like what @ColoReader just said. Independent—NOT “left to their own devices without support.” #g2great
  • NowakRo Jul 5 @ 9:22 PM EDT
A7 Using student voice to help find the right balance in learning for each student. Approaching every student for who they are with supports that they need for their personal growth. So excited to start the new year already! #g2great

A7 Rethinking my definition of seatwork and how Ss/parents/colleagues define it (the idea isn’t all bad, there are just some ineffective practices out there!). I will be even more intentional about the choices Ss have to showcase their learning. #G2Great
  • DrMaryHoward - Moderator Jul 5 @ 9:25 PM EDT
