Hello everyone! I'm Staci from Ohio. I teach 5th and 6th grade language arts & social studies.
A1 Sometimes admin looks at engagement as compliance, even when learning doesn't exist. Engagement is authentic learning!
Glad to be here and ready to learn.
Thank you! So hlad I am able to participate.

Lisa - Northern Ca teacher & TOSA Great topic today!
A1 Engagement is when Ss are so entangled in the lesson that they can't think of anything else. They say, it is over already?
Hi Renee White from Apex, NC. 1st grade.
A1: I agree compliant doesn't mean engaged. When I was in the classroom, my principal called it organized chaos!
A1: Here is an article from ASCD - Strengthening Student Engagement: What Do Students Want? https://t.co/t1d2gJdgGE
A1 engagement should be authentic! Should show Ss hunger for more knowledge
and your time runs out and you don't even notice!! Happens in the library all the time!
A1 great question! I think that too often what we are seeing is compliance. SS want to please- Ts, parents. Can look similar.
A1: I honestly think it's a bit of both. I feel ss are engaged when they are the ones who extend the activity and discussions.
That is when everyone is so engaged the lesson can go on for days!
if students are engaged from motivation it is authentic but if it is just because it is complaint
in York county. I went to a neighboring college to grove city. SRU
A1: authentic engagement happens when the students have a vested interest in the content.
so how do we get the Ss that may not be as enaged, involved into the convo?
Yes & I've heard kids say - "no - I can't stop. I'm right in the middle of learning." https://t.co/XmVqOysaQM
A1 Engagement is when Ss are so entangled in the lesson that they can't think of anything else. They say, it is over already?
Thank you! I am so glad to be here.
Relationships. Find what sparks these kids to get them engaged.
A1: Engagement should be authentic, but most see student compliance as engagement.
and vested interest comes when they have a choice in the matter
A1: Authentic engagement! Unfortunately we have "taught" students to be strategic compliant.
authentic learning is what brings engagement.manipulating, discussing and interacting, that is engagement !
A1: In authentic learning Ss should be engaged. Some learning may look compliant bc Ss require certain skills to complete proj.
relationships! such a good tip to remember https://t.co/hHt2hmMrTw
Relationships. Find what sparks these kids to get them engaged.
So true. https://t.co/Cp0s8LPzRh
A1: Authentic engagement! Unfortunately we have "taught" students to be strategic compliant.
Some admins see a compliant classroom as wonderful! Not necessarily!
A1: I love when ss look at me at 3:00 and say" but we just got here! "
A1: also heard from HS kids "what do I need to do for an A?" or "Is it going to be on the test?" How do we change this thinking?
Real engagement is when students are starved to know more and they can't learn fast enough. Compliance=Nap time.
Real engagement is when students are starved to know more and they can't learn fast enough. Compliance=Nap time.
A1: Engagement = autonomy, self-directed. Compliance = classroom management
When I hear the" aweeee" when its time to clean up, I know learning took place and I did my job!
It is even better when they say “Can I stay after school to work on this!”
Love this! https://t.co/Cy7RXxnold
authentic learning is what brings engagement.manipulating, discussing and interacting, that is engagement !
love that idea, has definitely helped me in my own schooling, to own my work!
Agreed. Just because students are sitting still and staring at the teacher doesn't mean they are engaged.
A1: All of us were taught compliancy. That's why transforming teaching & learning is so difficult. Many comfortable w status quo
A1: Ss are more likely to be engaged if see purpose of "practice" material. =.
Hi, all! Lisa from Pittsburgh - mod for running late. Looks like a great chat so far.
A1: depends on task; if it's a passion it's authentic; if not its compliant; Ss will not be engaged if it doesn't interest them.
Today one of my kids said, "Wow! Today went fast! I'm not ready to go home yet! What music to my ears!
In Q2 we’re discussing your learners’ position on the Continuum of Engagement coming up next!
Welcome Lisa to ! Jump in the convos!
Not only HS students. Here these in elementary school too. https://t.co/XqWXl2qeCs
A1: also heard from HS kids "what do I need to do for an A?" or "Is it going to be on the test?" How do we change this thinking?
Yeah! love that - that's how I feel after one of these with all the amazing educators! https://t.co/ID8VVkNuk0
When I hear the" aweeee" when its time to clean up, I know learning took place and I did my job!
Agree! And they are asking questions that go beyond clarifying what they need to do for the assignment.
Get rid of grades & testing; can assess in other more effective ways https://t.co/HRLACOJO6X
A1: also heard from HS kids "what do I need to do for an A?" or "Is it going to be on the test?" How do we change this thinking?
Welcome Lisa so glad you were able to make it tonight! Jump in to https://t.co/DGQ3RlUE46
Hi, all! Lisa from Pittsburgh - mod for running late. Looks like a great chat so far.
A1:Such sad words to hear. Ask sts how what they are doing connects to their interests and passions. https://t.co/lggNHEyzVa
A1: also heard from HS kids "what do I need to do for an A?" or "Is it going to be on the test?" How do we change this thinking?
I think authentic learner engagement starts with authentic classroom relationships Ts to Ss and Ss to Ss
A1: when my Ss were authentically engaged they didn't hear bell & if they did, they refused to leave.
A2 Students need to be part of the "engagement" discussion. They need to teach us what is engaging to them!
Yes This is why we need to transform learning right from the beginning - to keep curiosity https://t.co/NZxY6zguqV
Not only HS students. Here these in elementary school too. https://t.co/XqWXl2qeCs
A1: also heard from HS kids "what do I need to do for an A?" or "Is it going to be on the test?" How do we change this thinking?
Q2: Give them an environment in which they feel safe to learn and make mistakes.
Yes, relationships are critical in creating environments where all learners thrive.
That would be amazing!!! https://t.co/r87rF8Q6jN
Get rid of grades & testing; can assess in other more effective ways https://t.co/HRLACOJO6X
A1: also heard from HS kids "what do I need to do for an A?" or "Is it going to be on the test?" How do we change this thinking?
So hard!This is why ❤️geniushour proj.Tests 👎🏽😄.The process & S choice & voice is more important. https://t.co/OaViEtlLMZ
A1: also heard from HS kids "what do I need to do for an A?" or "Is it going to be on the test?" How do we change this thinking?
A2 looking for advice on this!
I agree! Get the state department to get on the bandwagon!
A2 as I am still a student myself I can say most of us are in commit but those who really strive fall into connect/flow
Ah, yes. You're making me question whether the tasks where I noticed high engagement were actually good tasks.
A2 Learning must be authentically exciting to Ss. We need to move beyond the quiet, teacher centered ideas.
applying older skills to something new. Turing the bulb on from a distance. Engaged and building on skills and independence
A1 in authentic learning, Ss should be involved in the planning process for their learning.
We need to have that conversation. Why are we continuing to do practices not good for kids? https://t.co/RqWhxfhfA5
For some reason I'm not seeing the Qs today ;(
Looks interesting. What were they working on?
A2 Ts need to know their Ss. Trust them to take us to their place of engagement and passion!
Yes!!So often engaged classes are quite the opposite! There is a buzz & at times noise. 😮 https://t.co/dJ6d9Z4cMk
Agreed. Just because students are sitting still and staring at the teacher doesn't mean they are engaged.
A2: constantly asking ss what they want/what we should do differently. Ss surveys are a big part of our classroom.
So, I guess that's where I should invest more time, yes?
And beyond ask, listen to what they are telling us even when we do not ask! https://t.co/XhgZUSRBfS
A2: constantly asking ss what they want/what we should do differently. Ss surveys are a big part of our classroom.
Yes! https://t.co/Ncsq8XTF0a
Get rid of grades & testing; can assess in other more effective ways https://t.co/HRLACOJO6X
A1: also heard from HS kids "what do I need to do for an A?" or "Is it going to be on the test?" How do we change this thinking?
A2: Right now we are in the Flow in the Continuum of Engagement in . Where are you in your classroom?
Authentic conversation. Honesty and partnership from day ONE!
A2: Where are your learners on this continuum?
Maybe they are engaged in something else?!
A2: In middle school, moving up the ladder. Need to unlearn compliance & learn how to learn
A2: Mine are still little learners & new to independent learning so they are currently between commit & connect & ❤️it!
A2: I struggle with the kids who need you to hold their hand.. i go back and forth if they can do it or if they truly need help
A2: Students can be at all levels of engagement, but as a facilitator our job is to help students move to full engagement.
A2: I'm in Flow; self motivated to learn I still in my Ss
when I look at this, I wonder if it depends on what SS are learning and their personal interest or connection to it?
My kids decide daily what will excite them, engage them. Have no time to waste on robotic compliance! https://t.co/wpA8aend4A
A2: Right now we are in the Flow in the Continuum of Engagement in . Where are you in your classroom?
So true it is difficult to move up the ladder if we are in a compliant system - https://t.co/16H3zl04Vs
A2: In middle school, moving up the ladder. Need to unlearn compliance & learn how to learn
very well said! It is so easy to fall into the compliance pattern. Kiddos do not know how to think for themselves
Yes! And spending those few extra min each lesson to help Ss develop habits that will last forever https://t.co/A2qEjGu5IN
A2: Students can be at all levels of engagement, but as a facilitator our job is to help students move to full engagement.
A2: During my Ss are more in flow stage & very driven.
And watch as well? then reflect - hopefully as a team, to ask what learning was really going on here?
A2: if you get rid of grades & testing then you can really ignite their passion & learning; learning to learn.
Yes Paula we have more Qs on that - how to move to full engagement is challenging https://t.co/9WTv4SLzz9
A2: Students can be at all levels of engagement, but as a facilitator our job is to help students move to full engagement.
Encouraging learners that they can try and succeed may give them enough to let go of your hand.
We were taught compliance as students, we were evaluated on compliance before as Teachers. The shift is about being real!
In Q3 we’ll discuss learners committing to the learning process.
Absolutely, Ss are always engaged in something. Make sure they are engaged in their learning.
Absolutely! plays a huge role! https://t.co/cJZjtbe5eZ
when I look at this, I wonder if it depends on what SS are learning and their personal interest or connection to it?
Get them talking about learning and the process! We all can use some reflection! https://t.co/QuzX9UcmIr
And watch as well? then reflect - hopefully as a team, to ask what learning was really going on here?
Gradually, w/ feedback and modeling what is expected in a true learning environment. Lots of reflection https://t.co/aE5fhEuUpG
How do you go about doing that?
A2: Ss need to drive their own learning to reach & stay in Flow.
A2 I'd liketo think Im on a constant trip to flow. As long as Ss are given choice based on their learning style, you're close.
Nice diagram. What if Ss never associate flow with school learning? Why would they climb the ladder?
Jumping in the conversation around engagement
A3 to show them all they can achieve and allow them creativity in their own work
A2: Between commit and connect depending on the Ss. I teach a wide variety of instructional & Gd. Levels at the same time.
Reflection is important. If you can not relate or apply it to something personal...why learn it in the first palce
A3: Make sure learners understand the "why" of what they are doing/learning ?
A3 Forced learning hurts us all. No one like to gag on a lesson. It has to be mutually engaging and help both sides!
so, the more we can help learners make connections, the more likely they will be truly engaged.
A3: Ss are motivated by success. Showing them that they can be successful helps.
A3: Encouragement.introducing the material as meaningful to their own lives...will they use what they are being taught
A3: By consistently presenting them w/evidence of their own successes. Often times Ts only tend to the mistakes.
A3 If students get to own their learning and see it as rewarding, they will lead their own journey and ask what they learn next!
Yes true. Is it also possible they don't want to climb ladder - easier to be compliant n coast?
Yes, and have learners talk about their learning to make connections to prior learning
A3 my experience with kids is working at summer camp, I've learned there to be yourself and listen to what they need
Well put! Then learners wont feel need to be compliant for sake of being compliant-just to themselves https://t.co/zzTHY5arOh
A2: if you get rid of grades & testing then you can really ignite their passion & learning; learning to learn.
A3 Make it meaningful. Involve then in the process. Guided Inquiry.
A3: let learners follow their interest and passions
A3: Ss goal setting and goal choice has been very successful in our building.
we need to change that; more open curriculum w/ no tests & grades
A3 Ss that are feeling like they are getting some control of their learning will become self-regulated learners for life!
A3: Choice, actionable feedback, and working in teams
Welcome Patti for joining in love what you wrote about encouraging Ss w evidence of success https://t.co/efIVXCEtnW
A3: By consistently presenting them w/evidence of their own successes. Often times Ts only tend to the mistakes.
A3: sharing progress with others will motivate learners as well.
I think sometimes it is easier. learning new things can be a challenge some just do not want to try.
Im interested in how do you do this in math https://t.co/Svdcr9H84Z
My kids decide daily what will excite them, engage them. Have no time to waste on robotic compliance! https://t.co/wpA8aend4A
A2: Right now we are in the Flow in the Continuum of Engagement in . Where are you in your classroom?
A3: Teach, model, & stress . Teach them how to question as a learner.
growth mindset!!! yes! https://t.co/pNfxqQ9KHe
A3: Teach, model, & stress . Teach them how to question as a learner.
Exactly! If they can just explore & learn w/o fear of grades, they can soar! https://t.co/m8OoeCuD2w
Well put! Then learners wont feel need to be compliant for sake of being compliant-just to themselves https://t.co/zzTHY5arOh
A2: if you get rid of grades & testing then you can really ignite their passion & learning; learning to learn.
I can not agree more! Goal setting is a skill that is lifelong and valuable!
yes! Evidence of success Thinking about self created rubrics too
That sounds good. I wonder how we can learn from summer camp n organise our classrooms better?
If students have control they will want to contribute and perhaps teach themselves without even knowing..
I explain what our goal is and then we decide what skills and modes we will use to learn the content. https://t.co/VfaFK9JuKZ
Yes Mark hope to see examples of your Ss getting control of their learning very cool! https://t.co/fHPQfsHZ3K
A3 Ss that are feeling like they are getting some control of their learning will become self-regulated learners for life!
My Goals! Self-regulated students by the end of each year! https://t.co/sMGGDLEFRO
If students have control they will want to contribute and perhaps teach themselves without even knowing..
Ts should find Ss preconceptions about topics/ideas. It may be they unsure what they could be passionate about? Make a spark
A3 As says "get a dream, get a goal, go for it!" Promote the environment to allow this to happen
Yes! They need to see the real world connections behind what they are learning. https://t.co/bTNMklqtGe
A3 Make it meaningful. Involve then in the process. Guided Inquiry.
Spunds good. How did you get them to monitor/track their goals?
A2 Love the ladder, on holidays and surrounded by my curriculum planning docs, wondering where to start PBL & begin to climb!
Video? https://t.co/cwJPsnycJG
Yes Mark hope to see examples of your Ss getting control of their learning very cool! https://t.co/fHPQfsHZ3K
A3 Ss that are feeling like they are getting some control of their learning will become self-regulated learners for life!
A3 Ss need to understand the value. Make it valuable. Make the experience so enticing that it's irresistible.
I would add meaningful to their own lives right now not meaningful later in life. https://t.co/nazQL9u0j9
A3: Encouragement.introducing the material as meaningful to their own lives...will they use what they are being taught
Provide the answer, and let the Ss figure out how to get it. Discuss the varying ways.
this also relates to doing S surverys throughout the year https://t.co/9W3RaMCtJW
Ts should find Ss preconceptions about topics/ideas. It may be they unsure what they could be passionate about? Make a spark
You are right here with me! Yes! https://t.co/9ghieP3ZGa
Provide the answer, and let the Ss figure out how to get it. Discuss the varying ways.
at the kindergarten level I have taught the Ss to ask why to pretty much everything...can you figure it out on your own..
Agreed! This is why we need a more open curriculum & exposing them to a variety of literature & info https://t.co/wli2sRLnQU
Ts should find Ss preconceptions about topics/ideas. It may be they unsure what they could be passionate about? Make a spark
Great idea! Summer camp is experiential, relevant and connects to real world - https://t.co/1H8QKp4IjH
That sounds good. I wonder how we can learn from summer camp n organise our classrooms better?
Nice! I reckon I could build more convos on this w Ss, helping them to get to next rung of ladder too.
My classroom is an open learning lab for all to experience. I love it! https://t.co/h3pQvV0J6s
Awesome! I'd love to see this in action sometime! sometime?
Curiosity and pursuing interests coming up in Q4 in 1 minute!
Hi friends,Spiri from PA, tardy to the party tonight
Q4 How can we provide opportunities for lrnrs to develop their own curiosity & pursue their interests? https://t.co/zD3HPrYAQp
Yes done this with 8th grade math Ss w each group had a diff standard to solve one answer https://t.co/njEr4t38VL
Provide the answer, and let the Ss figure out how to get it. Discuss the varying ways.
Good question. A tall order building this into daily maths. Maybe a big maths-based inquiry sometime?
A4 have Ss particpate as much as possible in creating things like the rubric
Once y hey choose their goal they set their time specifics and how they want to measure their learning.
So glad you are here Spiri jump right in - your voice matters in https://t.co/EBn0lBfFwE
Hi friends,Spiri from PA, tardy to the party tonight
A4 Practice! Ss are not used to being curious in the classroom. Often they have been taught to only learn what is taught.
A3 student created questions, curation & freedom to explore & make connections led to flow here: https://t.co/6KP4oMZMHs
A4: Frame learning outcomes broad enough to allow room for connection to learner passions
A4: Build relationships first, knowing their interests can aid in what to tempt them w/next. "OMG I wonder what this is??"
Kindergaretn covers so many topics, how can you not find something interesting if only the state would leave learning alone..
I'm wondering, where did that fear start? What makes it continue?
A4: has to start w/ open curriculum & letting Ss read, read, read a variety of genres. Have discussions in community circles
A4: We have EI (enrichment-intervention) time in our daily schedule for this very thing!
A4 allow 4 your classroom to be a place where they can b thmslvs if need be connect what u r teachin to their interests
Any time I see the word associated with and I know it has to be a great thing!!
A4 We need to nature and celebrate curiosity daily. Never let a question collect dust. Inquiry teaches us to feed curiosity!
A4: take learning outside & connect w/ community organizations.
Yes! Inquiry!~ https://t.co/cqknkL6sQY
Good question. A tall order building this into daily maths. Maybe a big maths-based inquiry sometime?
A4: Give them time to explore in & ! Stimulate by modeling & w literature & videos
Sad but true. https://t.co/9mCfuTs1w6
A4 Practice! Ss are not used to being curious in the classroom. Often they have been taught to only learn what is taught.
A4: model excitement. Sometimes I get so excited about what I'm teaching, I lose my breath. excitement is contagious
A4) Ss need TIME to pursue passions. It's a precious commodity in most schools.
Same here. N me realising I need to have my Ss here to help me w planning process!
A4: its okay to be wrongor have your own way of problem solving...Ts need to stop saying no do it this way
I'd love to learn more about EI time from Lynn - sounds really interesting! https://t.co/br6o7YEnck
A4: We have EI (enrichment-intervention) time in our daily schedule for this very thing!
A4 Ss need to know that their "what-ifs" are doors to new learning and new possibilities. Leave the door open for them!
3A) Ss commit. depends on Ts commit, minimumnot enough, find solutions for challenges, Ss learning is our daily breath of life
A4: 20% projects/genius hour. You can also tie curriculum into college&career. Ss want to weld? Have them research ancient tools
B/c it focuses on product & not process. Ts need to assess as they work not at end. 1/2 https://t.co/cV5yfldHmo
I'm wondering, where did that fear start? What makes it continue?
so important especially at the younger level!
Woohoo! New mantra for my classroom!
In math Ss think they have to be fast to be good & that it's all about algorithms which isn't true 2/2 https://t.co/cV5yfldHmo
I'm wondering, where did that fear start? What makes it continue?
Absolutely! Modeling is so important!Amazed how many look lost given time to create, search wonders, etc. https://t.co/nTQQCt5atZ
A4 Practice! Ss are not used to being curious in the classroom. Often they have been taught to only learn what is taught.
A4 Ss curiosity creates thinkers! DO NOT stop the thinking, instead give it room to grow!
my kindergarten kids came in with the fear of being wrong....why is that at 5 years old....
A4: Allow Ss to be, act, engage in curiosity through out the learning process. Set the tone to let them take risks, fail
A4: in math for example give Ss the answer & do math in marker; can see their thinking thus focusing on process not product.
4A) Create environ for Q-ing to be a strength, it's welcomed & desired in classroom, make Qs. a habit, model why/what if/how Qs
A4: Discover "Inspiration Time"
A4: Give Ss choice about how they learn and demonstrate learning (learning target = constant, learning activity = variable)
A4 We come to school to make meaning together, don't we? Wonder how we can reveal common personal cares/interests?
A4: Thanks for saying that we set the tone to let them take risks https://t.co/7sstsndTLc
A4: Allow Ss to be, act, engage in curiosity through out the learning process. Set the tone to let them take risks, fail
because of standardized testing..the pressure is on to think one way and to be different is wrong..that explains a lot
Where the rubber meets the road: recognizing engagement in Q5.
It is all about the learning environment! Questions welcome! Curiosity required! https://t.co/NTqbn8w1Dg
4A) Create environ for Q-ing to be a strength, it's welcomed & desired in classroom, make Qs. a habit, model why/what if/how Qs
is now trending in USA, ranking 48
We have amazing school in my district - School In The Woods-They have done just that!
What a great way to describe it! Questions welcome! Curiosity required!
A4 know your kids. listen more/talk less. My kids make their own rubrics. Immediate feedback.
Hey, you in your trackydaks avoiding holiday-housework like me?!
Take time to build relationships so you can reveal common personal cares/interests - TY https://t.co/jY40XaPvuk
A4 We come to school to make meaning together, don't we? Wonder how we can reveal common personal cares/interests?
A4: Let go of the answer we were planning on getting, take what they gave and run w/it.
Q5 Engaged students do not want to be bothered, they are intensely engrossed in what they are learning. They will BITE!
A5: When they forget to look at the clock!!
That would make a great door sign! Wonder if we expect the same of our teachers during PD? https://t.co/JL6bmAx8Fx
What a great way to describe it! Questions welcome! Curiosity required!
they show it, you can see a fire burning inside in them, it is truly a sight to see when it happens
A5: no sense of time; ask/generate their own Qs; seek outside resources; very independent.
A5: When they are asking if you'll write them a late pass so they can stay and finish just 1 more thing!
A5: Ss are asking questions, making connections, and are explaining the process in their own words.
A5) When they don't want to leave at the end of the day! ;)
Nice idea. So I guess then they really understand the language of the assessment.
A5 when they are bringing back more information from home to fuel more of a conversation
A5: When they look forward to their work, get sad bc times up, & look back over work & question & revise or add to it.
And they do it with such excitement that they forget that it is school! https://t.co/Nl39sdwn4E
A5: Ss are asking questions, making connections, and are explaining the process in their own words.
A5: Student Gallup Poll: Measure What Matters for Student Success https://t.co/xfgTUmrmN6 Polls from 2015 includes engagement
Yes, When they ar win the flow and do not want to stop!
Absolutely! Loving holidays- great reflective time
A5 They want more. Their extendtheir thinking without prompting. They're invested and excited.
A5: True engagement and investment in learning process is happening when students are too busy to worry about the grade.
