Welcome to #3rdchat! Excited to discuss #LCInnovation.
Introduce yourself and share a GIF to describe how you are feeling after coming back from winter break.
Hi! Lesa Haney, Dripping Springs Texas. I am pumped to be back to work. Mornings are still a little rough though...gotta keep it real. LOL #LCInnovation#3rdchat
Q1: If we, as educators, settle for what is instead of what could be, our students lose out. What is an aspiration you have for the learners you serve? #LCInnovation. #3rdchat
A1: Promote Student Competency. I love working with teachers to empower students to solve problems with the tools they have. Students can do more than we give them credit. We are working to draw the learning out rather than cramming content. #3rdchat#LCInnovation
A1: An aspiration that I have is to provide more opportunities and resources to support learners to solve problems that matter to them. #LCInnovation#3rdchat
A1: An aspiration I have for the learners I serve is that they own their learning and become lifelong learners. I want kids to feel confident taking risks, making mistakes, and challenging themselves. #LCInnovation#3rdchat
A1 My aspiration for my students is that they feel empowered as learners. I want them to pursue their interests and discover their unique, individual strengths. #3rdchat
A1: my aspiration for my kids is that they know their own worth. Each person has different strengths. I want each child to find their own and be proud of that. #3rdchat
A1: My aspiration for learners is that, instead of telling students why ELA matters, affording them opportunities to apply it to their own lives. It's not enough to hand students the master key, we have to let them open some doors with it too! #3rdchat
A1 - An aspiration I have as a coach is to help teachers become the facilitators and increase the student engagement with more creating and showing of what they know instead of the teacher feeding them information. #3rdchat
Q2: In a constantly changing world, the role of the educator will continually need to evolve? Share an example of how your practice has evolved to meet the needs of learners you serve.
#LCInnovation#3rdchat
A2: My practice evolved in the area of #StudentVoice. Apps like @Flipgrid & @Padlet allow me to collect & listen to student input. The game-changer is empowering students to listen & respond to one another. Recommitted to listening & speaking skills too. #3rdchat#LCInnovation
Q2: As I continue to evolve, one thing I try and do more of is ask people what they need rather than assume. Result is more buy in and usually way better solutions than I would have though of on my own.
#LCInnovation#3rdchat
Jessica jumping in late. A1 I work towards students being lifelong learners that are independent thinkers. I also work hard on social emotional skills, self regulation and the ability to use the engineering process in multiple situations. #3rdchat
A2: I have learned to take a back seat in the classroom. I encourage the kids to be the leaders and teachers in the room. As often as I can I put students in charge. Kids seem to listen better to other kids best these days. #3rdchat
A2: The way Ss view information has changed. Though I still think we should teach knowledge, we need to be conscious of the new paradigm. We need to talk more about why we learn. We need to make learning authentic. We need to provide frameworks to navigate new knowledge. #3rdchat
A2: This year has taught me a lot about changing my teaching to meet the learners. We have a very low cohort and we have had to adjust by using more concrete math models and more guided reading. We are working to find some tech tools to help us meet their individ. needs #3rdchat
A2: this made me lol! My teaching has evolved SO much. Every year looks different because it all depends on their needs! This year we’ve definitely spent more time on the social emotional piece! I’ve really tried to bring in a variety of literature-sharing all cultures #3rdchat
A2 My practice has evolved in the area of classroom tech. Devices used to implode if I stepped anywhere near but now I use them all and am willing to try new things to help my students find new ways to share their voice and create new meaning. #3rdchat
Discussion around SEL needs are continuing to grow... just talking to a friend today about how important meeting these needs will be in the future of our county #3rdchat
A2: My role as a classroom teacher has changed so much in the past 10 years! Of course technology has evolved but even the allowance of student voice and choice has become so important. I'm much more a teacher of the whole child now than when I started. #3rdchat
Q3: Think about a learning experience that really impacted you. What are the characteristics of your most significant learning experiences?
#LCInnovation#3rdchat
A2: There are so many new ways that students can collaborate and share their learning via digital tools (@Seesaw, @nearpod, @BookCreatorApp, etc.). These digital platforms have been a game changer in giving my students voice and choice. #3rdchat
A3: My most profound learning experience was an opportunity that I had to be a learner in a PBL experience. My final product was to collaborate to create a product to explain my role in a newly created innovative coaching position. (1/2) #LCInnovation#3rdchat
A3: This was a rare event in my schooling...One teacher allowed me & a couple friends to create a skit to teach some geometry content. We mastered the content, creatively communicated it, shared the responsibility, and had FUN. Thank you, Miss Ruane! #3rdchat#LCInnovation
A2: I offer so much more choice than when I started teaching. Also want kids to know they matter, they can lead, they can make a difference, and they have a voice that impacts others #3rdchat
A1: I want my Ss to leave my room LOVING school, so eager to learn more, and to be curious about the world about them. I want life long learners! #3rdchat
A3: It was challenging, frustrating exciting, engaging, and thrilling all at the same time. I couldn't wait to work on it with my colleagues. We were so engaged that we had to make ourselves stop to go home. (2/2) #LCInnovation#3rdchat
A3: THE STRUGGLE! I was always a "good" learner growing up, but my most important life and educator lessons have been drowned in a good healthy dose of hard work and a dash of frustration. #3rdchat
A3: immersion: I learned about poverty levels around the world through a two day cultural immersion that mocked countries around the world. We felt hunger. We had to barter for food. We slept in a drafty barn with no blankets. Learn by doing and experiencing #3rdchat
A3: In third grade, I participated in a Land Run (im from OK). We dressed the part and our lunch had to only be what they would have eaten! It was something I’ll never forget because they created an experience, not just a lesson. #3rdchat
A3: My most significant learning experiences have been the result of having ownership in my learning. I'm thinking about times that I was encouraged to pursue an interest, passion, or question and have personal choice in the process and product. #3rdchat
A2: Over the last couple of years I have evolved by becoming stronger with TechEDU - It's not a fad that is going to slowly go away and this is one way to meet the needs of the current generation of students #3rdchat
A3 my most significant learning experiences came when I was working with teachers whom I had relationships with. They really listened to me and supported me while also pushing. I was allowed to fail and and then encouraged to try again. #3rdchat
A3: I think my most significant learning experiences were centered around collaboration. Working in a cooperative and structured manner is real life! That's a skill we all need to practice and learn. #3rdchat
A4: I am working on stopping getting caught up in every "new" idea. Of course, I always want to be learning and trying new things, but I want to be more mindful and focused on what new tech, strategies, etc I introduce. Sometimes less is more. #LCInnovation#3rdchat
A4: I am subtracting over-scaffolding. Replace it with inquiry, predictions, wonder, and productive struggle. We need to give students room to think. #3rdchat#LCInnovation
A4: One thing that I am really working on is the right balance of structure and support embrace the learning process rather than perfection. A work in progress... #LCInnovation#3rdchat
A3: When I was in third grade, we learned about our local government and went to a council meeting to present our findings. We also researched rain forests and built one in our entire library. I would say authentic audience is what these projects had in common #3rdchat
A3: I've experienced a lot of incredible learning experiences recently! The biggest realization was that #learningtransfer can help me (and my Ss) better understand the world. It's helped me create more moments where my personal passions bleed in to my professional ones. #3rdchat
A2: I have evolved from my classroom being teacher led to student led. From being clip chart and teacher disciplined to being relationship based and more compassionate. Our room is our home. #3rdchat
This is a good one! There is so much to do and so little time - I have to be mindful about the "fun" lessons I create and how long they will take ... and that I don't have to do everything in order for it to be comprehensive. #3rdchat
A4: talking! I have really made a conscious move towards keeping mini lessons MINI and letting the kids do the talking. I could talk about books all day, but stop so the kids can share what they are excited about #3rdchat
OH!!! I miss this PLN so much - I really need to learn how to balance ... It's going well! I have such an awesome group of kiddos this year #3rdchat How 'bout you?? Would luv to catch up soon :)
A4: moving away from whole group teaching.. it makes such a difference getting your hands on those babies in small increments. Small quick lessons, with hands on real world experiences are way more powerful #3rdchat
A5: Last year, my colleagues & I used Google Hangouts for Simulcasting. We team-taught a lesson LIVE from our own classrooms. We were able to communicate through video conferencing. Students loved seeing other classes & we got to model teaching practices for each other. #3rdchat
Instead of controlling every aspect of the process/product, I'm looking for ways to give my students more academic choice. Sometimes it is a messy process, and things don't always go perfectly, but my students often surprise me with their creativity. #3rdchat
A5: Twitter has done that for me. I never knew what the teachers in the other elementary schools in our district did each day. @MrsEGrade3 gives me a glimpse into her room so often through her posts! I love it! #3rdchat
A5: I have done some Skype sessions and also use Seesaw daily. We encourage the kids to seek outside experts when working on projects as well. #3rdchat
A3 A design challenge on a Professional Development Day impacted me in a profound way. This was during a workshop lead by @krlinton where we worked with a partner on a full design process with empathy at the center. 1/2 #3rdchat
A5: I would LOVE to be able to do this more. I know a lot of teachers feel stress with visitors and comparing data and such. I would like to help people feel more comfortable! #3rdchat
A5: always loved field trips (my Ss don't have many experiences to pull from) - Some of my faves: Nature Center, Farm, Perf. Arts Center, Local Library
I've also exposed my Ss to webinars thru @Seesaw & connected w/ other classres via #FlipGrid - Thx to @Ron_Martiello#3rdchat

That's awesome! So many teachers are afraid to give up "control". Once teachers transform learning, many come back to me saying how amazing it is to watch and listen to their students. Students can do it! #3rdchat
A5: I've become very comfortable with an open door. I've allowed myself to show others that we have challenges. I welcome helpers, guest speakers, observers, partners. I ask parents to share an area of expertise then stay to work with kids #3rdchat#3rdchat
That has been a game changer for me. I love when my district colleagues tweet of what is happening in their classrooms. It is great to see how others approach the same concepts. #3rdchat
Q6: Building a community of learners that can collaborate to solve meaningful problems empowers learners to exceed my wildest expectations. #LCInnovation#3rdchat
A6: In math, I empower students by putting the problem first. Students find their own ways to solve the problem. I use 100 Questions for Math Discourse to ask the right questions. Students persevere better and grow stronger. https://t.co/mhuYvYwE1J#3rdchat#LCInnovation
A5: (1/2) I think it's great when students share their learning across classrooms and grade levels. Our school's sixth graders invited our 3rd graders to take part in their world history showcase about their study of countries around the world. #3rdchat
A5: (2/2) This provided the older students with an authentic audience and the younger students got to learn, experience, and ask questions. It was a great learning experience for all! #3rdchat
It's so gratifying when I hear and see my Ss taking ownership of their environment and learning - The Happy Habits from @TheLeaderinMe are something I teach throughout the year #3rdchat

This experience OFFICIALLY sold me on design thinking, even though I had already dabbled in it. I got 2 know my coworker in a genuine way- the start of collaboration and friendship. If a design challenge can do that 4 me, I asked myself: what it could do 4 my students. #3rdchat
A5 Twitter has opened the walls for me. I have loved looking into the classrooms of others in my PLN - very . inspiring and has challenged me in so many ways. #3rdchat
A6: Concept based instruction and #learningtransfer have been pivotal in helping me help my Ss ask better, more nuanced questions. By showing students the interconnectedness of the content and their lives, they get hooked on asking questions and finding patterns. #3rdchat
A5: We can make learning public through service learning. My sister and I were just discussing this last night! Getting our kids out in the community to do for others is such a powerful experience. #3rdchat
A6: I think it's important to encourage risk-taking in the classroom. Ask questions that prompt students to reflect on the process, rather that simply encouraging "right" answers. ("How could you solve this problem a different way?") #3rdchat
A7: Tomorrow, I can't wait to work with teachers & promote student competency. Looking forward to planning and working side by side with some great professionals. Going to empower students to make choices and believe in their ability to be problem solvers. #3rdchat
A6 By accepting and encouraging creative thinking, listening to students ideas and building upon them, make school a comfortable place to share your voice. #3rdchat
A6 The right questions are the ones students can’t wait to figure out. I teach researching skills & use design processes within authentic contexts. Through the year the skills are internalized & the topics can go into the children’s hands. This transition brings us joy. #3rdchat
A6: Having 3 classes limits time to form relationships. Relationships & community create an atmosphere where Ss can feel open to share & think outside the box creating questions. We do a quick greeting at the beginning of each switch to come together & learn about each others
I find this to be so important in Math. "Answer getters" call out answers and everyone's shoulders drop in defeat. Talking about the process levels the playing field and gives everyone a voice. #3rdchat
A6: My kids actually like sharing their mistakes with their peers and then telling them what they learned. It's fun to hear kids say, "I made that mistake too!" We love the #growthmindset#3rdchat
This year I've tried a new strategy in math - Ss check their answer w/ a peer & if their answers don't match then they need to work out the problem together to see who had the correct answer ... This has helped with Ss becoming more aware & being able to explain errors #3rdchat
