Yesterday the guys at @RunThePower published a podcasts I did with them. If you have an hour of free time, give it a listen. I talked about the life of a young coach in the business #hogfbchathttps://t.co/RqVvQS3MOd
SHAMELESS PLUG ALERT! @RiseAndFireCamp in LA is having linemen for the first time this year. There are 5 more slots to fill. If you have dudes that are interested in getting work in tell them to take a look! #hogfbchathttps://t.co/j2kJEB7lI0
If their are any small school coaches on tonight’s #Hogfbchat in PA, MD, WV Eastern Panhandle, or Northern VA looking for a game on October 25/26. Please hit my inbox. Looking for a competitive game to round our our schedule.
A1: I prefer my OL to drive off of their opposite foot at a 45°. They keep shoulders and hips square to ensure they are able to address any stunts or twists, and they can climb easier. Their read is the near knee of the DL. #hogfbchat
I think #hogfbchat should do Gif challeneges with themes! I saw like three different Chris Farley Gifs. God Rest em!
But seriously, I think it will be fun!
A1) Your target determines your angle so in some cases the angle may be flatter whereas in other it may need to be more 45 degrees or even close to straight ahead. Own the angle and you have a higher chance of success. #hogfbchat
A1) I want a step to make sure you don’t get beat across your face. Don’t care about angle, they have the tools and they are playing, they know better than me. #hogfbchat
A1: Do not run IZ. Although, on a down block step with near foot to near hip usually between 30/45 degrees and run the shoulder through the hip as if they were running the 40. #hogfbchat
Old school 45 degree angle on first step. Biggest coaching point happens before the first step. Load the mental weight and drive the earth with the backside foot. #Hogfbchat
A1) I’m a geometry teacher so 45 degree is what I say. Don’t open to much but enough to help influence the DL, if they’re well coached. If you’re uncovered taking a bigger step but still at that angle unless you’re piggy backing BS, then it’s drop bucket and run. #hogfbchat
A1: Lateral read step, eyes on the near hip of the adjacent defensive lineman. Second step is “in or up”. In to the down lineman if he plays to your gap, up to the backer if he’s away #hogfbchat
A1: for us depends on where you are in the combo. Shaded player typically a punch step to get foot in the crotch, b/s player takes flat to bucket to get correct angle. #Hogfbchat
A1: Depends on position/alignment of DL, but Yes! Get kids underneath in squat position to explode thru, avoided lunge step and initial stalemate. #hogfbchat
A1: We take a 4-6 inch step towards the opposite hip when we are blocking BoB. When double team, we take a step that same step but make sure our hips are together, and our off hand is pumping #hogfbchat
A1: In years past I’ve taught a 45 degree angle. 2 years ago we added a IZ with the QB opening up backside for a read. We started going to first step over and second step up for more downhill action. Worked well for us this year. #HogFBChat
A1) depends on the DL shade/covered uncovered and LBer alignment. I coach that the 1st 3 steps are the 1) POSITION(sets your hips up to cover DL)2) POWER (got nothing till it’s in the ground) 3) PATH (depends on LBer alignment) #hogfbchat
All depends where back is, where he’s aiming, & his read. Under center, have to cover them nose to nose, far to near. Backside side working vertical combos to cut-off. Angle on first step always determined by DL & LB alignment. #hogfbchat
A1: when at UWW we aimed eyes and hands far side number. Did not run a ton of straight zone but rather lead zone and split zone out of 12/21 personnel. Gave better combos. #hogfbchat
A1: Do not currently run inside zone as we are a flexbone triple option team. When I was coaching in the spread I taught 6'' lateral step then work vertical. #GoPanthers#JerseyMade#IPreferTheTriple#HogFBChat
A1: 45 degree angle while attacking half a man and climbing if playside; backside i.e. Center or backside Gaurd, looking to start with half of a man but then working to full. #hogfbchat
A1) we work a lateral first step. We see a lot of stunts so it gives us time to recognize and react. Probably not the most “by the book” way, but it helped our younger guys a lot this season. #hogfbchat
This weeks chat on Thursday at 6 PM MST will be all about special teams drills! So mark your calendars! In the mean time #HogFBChat is going on RIGHT NOW!!! Tune in for some high quality ball talk ! #WildBunchChat#YoungGunCoaching
Never understood the “give ground to gain ground” mentality. It’s not like you’re trying to hook them, you’re trying to displace vertically. Why not apply force through the ground and gain ground to gain ground? #hogfbchat
A1: What ever angle that puts you in position to attack the play side number of the defender. It’s going to vary based off of his alignment. #hogfbchat
A1 Covered: stepping play side aiming for In step of DL playside foot.
Uncovered: Far foot trigger Combo step.
Covered w/ combo: Far Foot combo steps
#hogfbchat
A1: we are going 45 degree step hip to hip on the combo, and towards the defender we are responsible for by the uncovereds. Naturally aiming point dictates angle.
#Hogfbchat
A1. It all depends on defensive alignment and where our targets are. But on inside zone, it is all predicated on identifying the Mike and following our rules from there.#hogfbchat
#hogfbchat A1: All depends on alignment of defender. If dbl team, FS should be working angle almost directly ahead to post up, BS works almost flat until half man ‘ship is reached then vertical. If far, gallop tech is preferred.
A1: Tricky question - there are some variables that come into play - Covered or Uncovered...Base or Combo Blocking...Frontside or Backside...Regardless, the key is to press the blocks vertically and not ‘drift’ laterally as the unit gets into their blocks.
#Hogfbchat
A1: The angle to get in position to drive the first level defender off the LOS and create a wall of OL as they combo up to the 2nd level. Depending on the player it can be different. I don’t want over extension to fall over. I just want movement #HOGFBCHAT
A1: Teach an opposite load to drive and gain ground with playside step. Get yourself moving at an angle. Tough to move people square to square. #hogfbchat
#hogfbchat Q1) To put it simply, key the knee of the next down lineman laterally, no immediate threat - climb to backer with gusto. @CoachCiocci is a great resource for zone
#hogfbchat A1: cont, if solo block, driving off back foot away from our intended angle dependent on where our defender is aligned. Working to be square to defender by pressure to pressure, then owning angle.
A2. Both guys block half a man. Get strong with your inside hand on the near breastplate. Eyes on the backer. Watching to see where he fills. #Hogfbchat
A1) 45 degree step playside regardless of covered/uncovered...being violent with backside hand in case of backside DL stunting towards the playside
#hogfbchat
Some years we have five guys that can get immediate push and displacement. Some years we have to fight like hell, get them going laterally, and let the back find a crease. Can’t recruit the guys we have, got to adjust to what our guys can do best. #hogfbchat
A2. Get hip to hip and don’t get split. Frontside take your guys to the sideline. Backside we want to cut off level 1 and drive level 2 to setup the cutbacks. #HogFBChat
A2: zone combos are all about “helping on the way” backside hand becomes a huge factor that has to be practiced while you’re on the way to your gap defender. Help your brother take over the BS as your on the path to your guy #hogfbchat
A2 we do not differentiate backside v playside. Looking for vertical displacement in both combos. Uses tags to change the back's spoke and aiming point. #hogfbchat
A2: changed up backside a bit this year, but FS will go skate (what I call drive-catch) with OS foot. 2nd to crotch for covered. UC will gallop I to defender. Covered man calls the “off” call. #hogfbchat
A2: combo guys are hip to hip, driving their inside hand through the chest with their eyes on second level ready to break off. Teaching them to communicate is a MUST! But the number 1 rule: First level is blocked before anything else! #hogfbchat
Q2big difference for us BS double can be thicker and much more like a PS gap double team. Fs doubles are much quicker and don’t always happen because of FSLB fitting underneath doubles. Big question for us evry game does center work with fs 3 or bs shade Try to do both #HogFBChat
A2: Do not run IZ. However, on a true double team block the post gets vertical push, drive horizontal to create a diagonal path through the first backer inside the double team We do not come off the DBL we just put the DL into the LBs path to give the back a two way go #hogfbchat
A2: As a rule of thumb, as I am sure it is with most OL, we want to maximize our double team blocks on each play... this is where the CROWTHER SLED is KING... hip to hip, hands together inside, off hands pumpin, eyes up for Level 2 #hogfbchat
A2 covered guy is aiming for playside number, uncovered guy is aiming for the backside number of the defender. Goal is to overtake the defender and get one of them to the second level #HOGFBCHAT
What we liked to use because of us playing a lot of odd fronts was full zone playside, combo between backside guard and center to front side backer. Backside tackle cut off backside LB and our TE stayed frontside and handled the overhang #hogfbchat
Teach playside and backside combos the same. Really focus on communication. Only real difference is aiming point for backside combo. Getting hip to hip, shoulders square getting vertical push. #hogfbchat
A2: Frontside “get the play started” by focusing on a vertical double team. Eyes up to backer splitting half a man.
Backside work to create a cutback lane with backer flow. #Hogfbchat
A2) Coach em to attack the playside number with eyes on 2nd level defender to determine who will release to get defender and who will overtake down lineman. Its a delicate dance...
#hogfbchat
In college, we got hip to hip and stepped in synch down his middle. Make sure to grab cloth with inside hand. Eyes on LB.
The way we learned, movement was important, but not as much of a coaching point as not getting split.
Can we talk about trap now?
#HogFBChat#jk
#hogfbchat A2: see my first part of A1 lol. We don’t reach the backside DT so our FS/BS combos are the same. If we were to, then backside OL on same DBL would work the angle to overtake, instead of dump overtop.
A2: Covered player takes a 45 step playside 2nd step throws a forearm roll. Uncovered player takes a lateral step working THICK to defenders V of the neck and playside number.
Drive the combo block vertical.
TAKE CARE OF LEVEL ONE FIRST! #hogfbchat
A2: Stay on the down guy!!! Constantly work on not coming off too soon. Defenses getting good at slipping off to inside. If next lineman climbs to soon, that’s a problem. #hogfbchat
A2: Combi Blocks are imperative. Practiced it everyday. Same rules apply front side and backside, because in the past I had all 5 guys learn all five positions. Teaching it the same simplified the learning. Just tagged different #hogfbchat
A2) Covered OL aims PS #, Uncovered aims BS #. Think I heard it on here but teach 90/50/10 rule. Uncovered SUCKS the air up between him and covered then GET VERTICAL PUSH! Inside zone is an A gap play and meant to be blocked with ILL intentions for the Defense! GATA #hogfbchat
A2: We don’t find ourselves with a lot of combos when blocking IZ, but on the plays where we do get a combo, we teach hip to hip, with hands on the near jersey number, eyes on the backer. Block the defender who threatens the gap you’re responsible to protect #hogfbchat
A2: p/s we are heavy to backer, hands on eyes up. Want to dent the defense. b/s aiming points are similar to o/s zone. Both players in the combo block work to play side hip of the defender #Hogfbchat
A2 Frontside: Far Foot first trigger step, 2nd step down the Crotch hip to hip. Don’t ever chase LB, drive the DL onto his toes.
Backside we will slip or scoop depending on the tightness of the DLs alignment #hogfbchat
A2: depends on alignment. I USED TO teach one hand on, hip to hip, shoulder to shoulder. But lately I’ve been leaning towards shoulder block and gallop technique. If defender is aligned in the gap and BS can reach it, then FS punches through shoulder. BS over takes #hogfbchat
A2) Guy who is being touched will step to post up defender with eyes over PS shoulder. Guy not being touch has all the responsibility to step and get hip to hip with his head on the BS shoulder. Both shoot hands into breast plate of DL. #hogfbchat
A2) Frontside & backside are different. C/PSG working to 3 tech = PSG driving to get vertical push on inside half of DL w C driving at appropriate angle eyeing near knee. Knee goes away can rock back on shade & work to LB; knee comes to must close gap b/w him & PSG #hogfbchat
A2: each lineman works to block their half of the defender then works eyes to flowing backer and makes the correct adjustment. I don’t differentiate between OZ and IZ for my athletes to help keep everything simple. #hogfbchat
We would love to ‘cut off’ all backside defenders but that may not be realistic when playing against some of the cats we see so at MINIMUM, we want to coverup all backside defenders and give our RBs 2 way go on the cut back, so our angles adjust accordingly.
#Hogfbchat
We try to keep the same on either side. Change the angle of attack based on the alignment, hip to hip on the angle with an arm free, playside man climbs to a linebacker usually #Hogfbchat
A2: we are a vertical push combo team lead man in combo maintains outside leverage with crowther flipper. Trail man drives laterally to near breastplate. We work. 2nd step for both will be vertical. Stay on until backer forces us to come off. #hogfbchat
A2: I like the F opposite the strength call to make them get the 3 away from where I’m going usually hAve the C/PSG combo with chip and climb by the G on the 1 until the C can get solid on him. Backside is more of a reach by the BST and the BSG chips and climbs #hogfbchat
A2: Covered linemen is still attacking the play side number of the down defender. The uncovered linemen is using the high knee gallop tech feeling the down defender with eyes on his gap/backer. #hogfbchat
A2) we like to get hip to hip. If we are struggling to get movement on a one we may down and wrap with center and guard. Depends on the dudes. #hogfbchat
A2: I really focus on playside and covered not committing their playside hand. I allow kids to flipper if they are more comfortable with that. We are undersized so it’s hard for kids to not overcommit that hand. #hogfbchat
A2) as a WR Coach, I teach my guys the same thing when we have a double opportunity for bubble screens...attack near number, hip to hip eyes on next level defender to determine who releases...
#hogfbchat
A2: On IZ we want to stay on the combo blocks as long as possible. Hip to hip w/eyes on LB. Vertical push on the DL = good things happening. Come off to the LB at the last second and let our RB make something happen. #hogfbchat
Q2: Sorry for late check in! For us, our combos do not change no matter the play. Only thing we change is ID. Makes it easy for kids to understand. #hogfbchat
A2: For Zone double teams, we want to push the playside double team vertical (vs nose, 1, 2i), on the backside (vs. 3 tech), the backside tackle tries to get his head across, pushing the guard through to the backside LB. #hogfbchat
A2 contd) BSG/BST vs shade = BSG driving for vertical movement & BST works up to BSLB. Vs 3 tech BSG must stay heavy on DL to give BST time to overtake as they work the dbl team up to BSLB (Blocking backside 3 tech in zone might be most important block) #hogfbchat
A2: we’re always hip to hip working 1st level 1st and do not differentiate front side and backside. Love putting a handshield between 2 OL’s hips and make them climb ground together on combos without dropping the pad in pre-practice drills.
#Hogfbchat
I feel like shoulder to shoulder, inside hand on breast plate, is easier to split because there’s less pressure and less surface area on the DL. That’s just my opinion. I also feel like hands on vs. shoulder combo is easier to get off on backer. We’ll see. #hogfbchat
#hogfbchat A2) “Universal Rule” - see Q1. We have different techniques that all support the universal, no gap threat “help your brother” by staying thick to backer. Want to avoid guys only worried about doubles instead of protecting from next DL spike
A2: post/ wheel. Post maintains vertical push and fit that stops flow to the ball. Wheel looks to get horizontal push away from the ball and work to LB. Backside has post/ wheel combo but post is not so concerned with vertical push as they are about getting to PS# #hogfbchat
A2) Think it depends on what system you are in and what the RB’s are being told. When I coached in pistol we were real vertical PS and looked to cutoff hard BS, our RB didn’t cut back behind center much. #hogfbchat
A2: all about communication and eyes. If you can’t play with your eyes chances are you’re gonna chase at some point and that leaves open windows for linebackers #hogfbchat
A2) doesn’t change...should be driving off the backside foot, catching w/playside foot, striking the near number w/the shoulder to help create displacement for his teammate who should strike w/near shoulder also. #hogfbchat
A2) Think it depends on what system you are in and what the RB’s are being told. When I coached in pistol we were real vertical PS and looked to cutoff hard BS, our RB didn’t cut back behind center much. We talked hip to hip and vertical push a lot #hogfbchat
Q1: Our steps depend on allignment. If you are covered then we call it lead drive steps. It is like a board drill! If we are expecting slants and games we will all brace gather steps(zone steps) to make sure gaps are all covered up #hogfbchat
A3: I don’t teach the flipper, I know there are 19 millions reasons to, but if the game is about controlling something, I don’t drive my truck with a flipper, you control with your hands. I teach hands #hogfbchat
A2: we’re always hip to hip working 1st level 1st and do not differentiate front side and backside. Love putting a handshield between 2 OL’s hips and make them climb ground together on combos without dropping the pad in pre-practice drills.
#Hogfbchat
A2. Depends on the type of combo. Sometimes ,against an even front, the center has to hard chip the backside shade/1 tech for the guard and get to the Mike. The traditional combo would be inside hips/arms working together with eyes up looking to get to assigned LB.#hogfbchat
A2: Lineman Block half the man. The lineman who comes off is the lineman who is getting the least amount of resistant. If the defender is giving you pressure you stay on and the other guy works to second level #hogfbchat
A2: We teach shoulder to shoulder, foot to foot, hip to hip, and one hand on each number. These are universal from frontside to backside as we combo to next level. #HOGFBCHAT
A3: we don’t work a flipper, we want to get hand on and drive the defender. I listened to @CoachHand talk at the Angelo Clinic last summer and I really like the flipper. More surface area to block and less likelyto get called for holding #hogfbchat
I like the flipper in our true Double teams. I like it because it allows are guys to not have to feel like they need to turn their shoulders. #hogfbchat
A3: Honestly dont know enough about the technique to make a y kind of opinion on it. Would love to learn and look forward to reading the answers! #hogfbchat
A3: gone back and forth. Like the initial flipper strike and then bring the hand into chest. Can get better leverage against defender. Also allows OL to have lower of level. #hogfbchat
A2: Linebackers make tackles, DLineman make TFLs/Fumbles - The PREMIUM is on Level 1 defenders. Move the DLs - gain yards.
We use Crowther based post fundamentals as the cornerstone to our doubles. Our ‘trail’ blockers work as the overlap on the post player.
#Hogfbchat
A3: I’m a flipper guy. I like the surface area that it provide, especially for younger OL and those developing strength still. Ultimately teach the pros and cons of both and let the kids decide what they are comfortable with. #hogfbchat
No flipper! Hands help us control the breast plate. This helps with turning a defender (push pull) and keeping a defender from spilling. Plus I feel like it lets the defender get to close, that may just be personal though #Hogfbchat
A3: No flipper. I want my guys to think of themselves as “driving the car” with their feet and “steering” the car with their hands and IMO, flipper doesn’t allow this. Also allows for extension to finish the block downfield #hogfbchat
A3: We went to a flipper this year. Reason - it just worked better for our guys. Better leverage. Better ability to get off to LB. It was more functional for our players #hogfbchat
#hogfbchat A3). THIS ALL DEPENDS ON HOW FAR THE DT IS FROM THE POST MAN.
Heavy Shade = Shoulder (thick)
Normal Gap (3Tech) = Flipper
Loose (4i) = Hand
Point of Emphasis - DO NOT LEAN BACK IN YOUR GAP! Hand and eye in gap is what we preach 👋🏻👀
A3: Never a Flipper. It's weak sauce. Makes me think of 1950's Football and leather helmets and pinning your best girl right before the sock hop. #hogfbchat
A3 Toolbox rule. I’m not a dictator, it’s our group and it’s my job to give them all the tools they need in their tool box. With that said I teach combos I will teach our normal low to high punch, I will also show or teach the flipper. It’s their choice on the tech #hogfbchat
A3 Ooooooh! Love this question. Flipper all the way. Have always felt it fostered an aggressive mentality, gave us the opportunity to hit on the rise, and was easier to master. I am a huge proponent for inside man on gap combos.
#hogfbchat
A3) flipper is GREAT for NFL caliber OL, for most HS guys I find it hard for them to have the shoulder strength/overall athletic ability to use it affectively #hogfbchat
A3: Flipper only at the first level; good, in my opinion, to help keep proximity to their man. Second level just bring the hammer on first threat. #hogfbchat
Depends on which OL is covered (PA vs BS). FS covered won’t get as much help so more wash-face in inside v. If BS is covered get heavy through the DL. Uncovered drive backside hand thru sternum keeping elbow down and drive backside knee thru crotch #hogfbchat
A2: We need vertical displacement of the DL by delivering him to the LB. now this ain’t always easy lol but both need to be aware of where the LB alignment and communicate when they decide to fill. It doesn’t change backside. Same concept #HogFBChat
#Hogfbchat
A3: No flipper. Physics dictate that while the surface area to make a block with a flipper are increased, the surface area cannot deliver and maintain the same amount of force as a tighter blow within the framework of the body's core. #hogfbchat
A3. Have used hand for years. Started teaching flipper for lead man this past year. I think it gives more shoulder stability and you get more surface area on the block. Frankly if they're successful I'm pretty agnostic.
#hogfbchat
A3: kind of semantics but no flipper. We use a shoulder puncture if the LB is tight enough to double team. If LB is + too far over only use hand. Use the punch to propel your next step to LB but 2nd step doesn’t change. #HogFBChat
A2: We don’t use Zone but from PS to BS on the combo block I do teach it differently from a footwork perspective. It is dependent on the DT position and how we want climb to the second level. #hogfbchat
A3
No flipper. Feel like a kid can achieve the same effect with hand(s) on. Also, we try to grab cloth. #HOGFBCHAT
But, interested in flipper theory for sure.
Flipper/High leg vs teams that are mostly stagnant because the amount of force that can be produced. Hands on the double team against teams that move a lot to be able to stay in control and feel the stunting better #hogfbchat
Q3: We do not use a flipper but we use a shoulder. Looking at our film though I am thinking about the flipper more and more. Maybe a slight upward movement with flipper after contsct? #hogfbchat
A3) I prefer the idea of using an open hand to strike b/c I feel like you can have better control of DL & get to LB easier but size/strength could limit the effectiveness so flipper/forearm has its place. Either way gotta practice on the Crowther sled right @CoachHand? #hogfbchat
A3: hand all day, every day.... had an old DL coach say “what are u doin? This isn’t electric football out of the Sears wishbook” I prefer being in control of our hands at all times...pass and Run blocking as well #hogfbchat
I personally love the flipper on combos. More surface area and a well thrown flipper punch will stun and create movement. Some kids like it and others hate it. I’m open #hogfbchat
A3: No Flipper, with vertical steps and staying square its a natural pressing motion with elbow tight to the body and the thumb up. Able to generate a lot of power if you time it with the same side foot stepping. #hogfbchat
A3: no flipper. I’m in the hands business and thou shall feel my hands strike fear into thee
I do like a little shoulder point in power though
#hogfbchat
A3: I use to be extremely against the flipper but I’ve open my mind to using it on the backside of zone cut off blocks to occupy more space for the defender to fight through.
#Hogfbchat
A3) I think it depends on the strength of who you have. If you have guys that can one arm punch and not get hung up..I like that; if your not there yet no shame in the flipper. #hogfbchat
A3: I HATE the flipper, BUT some of my guys love to use it. I tell them they can use it as long as they don't lean. We work dbl's enough that they've gotten good at knowing when, but when I see it on film I still cringe a little bit #hogfbchat
A3- No flipper, more control with hands. Sneak a hold and use defenders shoulder pads as steering wheel to take hom where you want. Although in a lot of crowther sled videos I do see the flipper used so would love to learn more about it! #HogFBChat
We teach the trial man to knock the spot man off. This keeps the trail man from losing leverage on the down guy when we get to 2nd level defender. #hogfbchat
A3: At times saw our feet stop and our pads rise with a flipper. Some really like it and it’s natural for them and gets them flowing through their half-man. Another one for the toolbox. #hogfbchat
A3 part 2: Our Hi-Leg guy isn't responsible for controlling the DL, so the flipper worked. The overlap player should fit hands under, lift and drive. #hogfbchat
A2-Fronts and scout report can change our combos. Base rules “stay the track” (see A1) and “feel the front, see the back”. An IZ combo is only good if we effect the LB #hogfbchat
A3: We teach aggressive root step and high foot or trail guy...locate 1st ILB to play side and work out our combos..no change from playside to backside #hogfbchat
A3: #hogfbchat No flipper. I have a hard enough time getting them to block the correct man the correct way. I think having them flip would just add to the confusion. I did it in college and high school. It's good if you have the right guys imo
My man @geoffschwartz has got me in a Crowther mindset today.
Posts, Drives and Chips are all fundamentals that can be taught on the Crowther Pan Sled. Here is a progression of drill work with game applications of those blocking fundamentals.
#TechniquesOverTactics#HookEm🤘🏼
A3: FLIPPER ALL DAY. Haha keeps your shoulder from getting destroyed while also being able to deliver more force through the defender. Whole lot more surface area on the flipper than your hand. #hogfbchat
Yeah 100%, I think that’s extremely important before they even take a step. Helps to position themselves effectively when they do take it, as opposed to being off balanced when moving laterally or at a 45. That’s how TFL’s often occur
#hogfbchat
A3) I love the flipper bc I think it can get the kids to use their hips more in the block and tie their lower half together with their upper half. Plus gives more room for error if you miss. Understand it’s not easy and can call for a lot of shoulder strength at times. #hogfbchat
A3: I want to use the outer part of the arm to lift the defender. One of my focal points are hip leverage (hips lower than the defender) & LIFT him!
This is not what I think of when referring to the flipper. Don't teach 1/2 bench. HIPS produce more force than 1 arm.
#hogfbchat
A3: #hogfbchat ooops I thought you meant flipping the line strong and weak. No I dont use the flipper. I want them to lift the front side shoulder with the meat of their palm. Other arm free and churning.
Well #hogfbchat world...looks like you got @CoachHand worked up on the ole crowther sled drill work! If you are a real OL coach and you dont have a Crowther...go do a car wash and fundraise for one! Check out the combos my man is blessing yall with tonight!
A3: I’ve done both but teach flipper currently. It’s a way for me to get my kids lower and therefore more displacement. Also they are less likely to commit a hand they shouldn’t. #hogfbchat
A3: Again, there are some variables that come into play here. We teach both and at times I tell the guys they have “dealer’s choice” based on those variables. I want the guys to have both in their toolbox though.
#Hogfbchat
A3: I teach as many weapons and tools as possible. Hands, shoulder pad/puncture/flipper to forklift on combos. OL are built different, so I attempt to teach multiple techniques and weapons to use. #hogfbchat
Q4: Power of course! Saw some film this year on how some teams release PST to OLB. Interesting! H kicks 4i (influneced by tackle out) and wrap to ID. Center and PSG double to BS LB. Only issue I can see is if OLB are walked up. But either way POWER! #hogfbchat
A1) I thinking sticking as close to theory as possible is best. That being said, I would teach to step lateral and make sure you are able to get to the next gap over. Push hard of the opposite foot to gain gain ground and prevent penetration. #hogfbchat
#hogfbchat A4) Duo - apply the universal rule to the frontside guard to help with the 4i. Duo takes the bad pulls out of power and allows for the 4i’s to be put in check. Both front side and backside 👊🏻
A4: #hogfbchat I will run IZ at it. I will run Dart at it. I will Trap it. I will run wide zone at it. So, basically all of my runs. It it's like ISU with the 3 deep safeties, we attack the inside hard, making them bring that 3rd safety down a lot. Then we Play action 95
Do we have an article coming out for #hogfbchat on this one guys! Check out the 4 and 4i article that @sdavischs wrote for @XandOLabs coming out soon! Ground breaking scheme and fundamentals for those cheating DCs that play 4s and 4is! Ask @coachgrimey about it! Some good stuff!
A1: We currently don’t run a lot of zone, but I believe the angle completely depends on the alignment of the defender and ultimately the players athleticism #hogfbchat
A4. We are IZ, IZ, IZ. Then when we want to run something else we run IZ again then OZ. Against this front our base IZ scheme is combo both 4i with G and T. Single block NG with C and have RB make him right #hogfbchat
A4: Speed Option! Punch and climb combo with the Guard and Tackle up to the Mike (load with a TE if we absolutely have to) and pitch of the overhang/force defender #hogfbchat & #meshpoint coming together!
A2: From a combo point I was taught to call combos on worst case scenario. Ex. A 3 play side worst case slants cross face so the center could help worst case. #hogfbchat
A4) Power. Vs PS4i, we reach PST to OLB, KO the 4i. Also Love MZ against that as well, puts a lot of stress on that PSILB, he has to be right, and be right quickly #hogfbchat
This Jet Motion GT Counter from Oklahoma is a thing of beauty!
- Weakside RB kicks out OLB
- Guard wraps for Mike LB
- Tackle wraps for Safety
If you play 2 high Safeties against 2 Backs and a TE, Oklahoma made you pay!
A4: It matters how you feel about your matchup at OT vs the 4i. If you want to know how a Tackle is measured in the run game it comes down to how well he can handle the 4i on cutoff blocks and frontside base blocks in Gap game.
#Hogfbchat
A2: We always try to get hip to hip. Work to the defenders midline. Focus on blocking half a man with 4 hands and vertical drive. 4 eyes on LB. BS is typically a lock with an RPO off of it. #HogFBChat
A3: For us it depends on the type of zone we are running,I like using the flipper for inside zone blocking and using the hands for more wide zone blocking concepts. #hogfbchat
A2: Cont. if the 3 Tech doesn’t slant the guard can take him while the center or backside player can rocket back and get vertical to the second level opening running lanes for the back. #hogfbchat
A3) no flipper, I don’t want them caught up in initiating contact when it’s time to climb. Too often linemen are focused on getting to a double team and using flipper. Secure the 1st level but this can be done with hands. If we don’t get the 2nd level we’re screwed. #hogfbchat
Great scheme and I know coaches who teach it simply as a variation to wide zone instead of having it as a totally separate scheme. Basically, the OL have the freedom to make the pin/pull call based on the look they get up front. #hogfbchat
All the guys saying Power, When gap scheming a 4i have you not found it tough on your PST to create movement on the 4i/stop penetration? If you zone combo the 4i ever had problems with LB run thru the open window before guard gets there? Always been scary for me. #hogfbchat

A4: I like outside zone as long as my guards are comfortable with the bubble playing with a lil more space it creates a lot of good cut back run opportunities. Split zone is one of my favorites against the 3 down front. #hogfbchat
A4) when I was I shotgun option I liked trap. More recently I like IZ with a wham by the H on the BS. Third option read him on zone read and arc the tackle. #hogfbchat
A4) we would pin and pull in our outside zone based on the rules. Center has fight like heck to cut nose off playside. Read backside 4i or cut him. #hogfbchat
A4: was just messing with some Tite formations. I would attack the C gaps and outside. Attack it horizontally. Once the Outside Backers start to flow outside you can attack the middle with Power and Trap. #hogfbchat
Please remember to follow your fellow coaches for weekly chats and collaboration! If you need help with something, chances are somebody out there is willing to help! #hogfbchat
A4: power, gt counter, iso in that order. Didn't hurt that everyone loved power. Our OT wasn't always up for it, but if he was working the 4i, I'm coming straight down with the iso. Might even wrap PS guard if we're feeling frisky (never happened this year ) #hogfbchat
If anybody has any topics or questions they would like discussed on the chat PLEASE do not hesitate to DM myself or @CoachDingus and we will get to them as soon as we can. #Hogfbchat
A4) Trap, tight counter W/H-Back, Dart, Outside Zone, Belly. If it’s this plus a 3 back box, I think you are screwed running most of this. Just zone it up. 2 backer box and all of this should be good. #hogfbchat
A4: tough to say without rest of defense in place, but counter is not bad here, especially if T can handle 4i. Old wing T belly with an X block call is good also. T down and G out on backer. Ran this in spread sutuationally too.
#hogfbchat
A1: I used to be focused on a 45 degree playside step on a tight shade, but Kirk Ferentz opened my eyes to prioritize the aiming point and the second step #hogfbchat

A3) trick question a little bit My opinion youth fb start with flipper. MS and older hold them until your caught. Because offensive line don’t hold unless they are caught #hogfbchat
#hogfbchat is brought to you by @GuardianCaps - padded helmet covers for practice. Great for linemen, good for others because IT STARTS UP FRONT.

A2: The only difference I teach is more of a cutoff angle if I'm on the backside, especially a TE/T (We call it trey) combo. Focus on working together to get movement on the DL first then come off when 'you can smell the LBs breath' #hogfbchat
A4: still like zone. Can fold the playside, arc and read the backside. All kinds of games you can play with IZ. I prefer Zone schemes to gap schemes vs two 4is (which we would just treat like 3s). Dart read also isn’t a TERRIBLE look, read playside (like power read) #hogfbchat

Depends on DL alignment if the DL is head up to backside of OL take small lateral step with toes north and south if uncovered open laterally with toes at 45 angle of block changes #hogfbchat
It occurred to me that I don’t know a whole lot about the flipper technique. Would love to learn more about it, especially if it puts the player in a better chance to be successful #HOGFBCHAT
