A1: Our current district mantra is "Challenge + Care = Success". Community building is assumed in this statement as everyone is operating with the same vision that has been cast...to challenge our students in a caring environment with the outcome being success. #122edchat
A1: We focus a lot on team building/class building. The staff at my school truly does have kids best interest at heart and knows our community well and there is strong focus on relationships w/ our families and kids #122edchat
A1: We strongly push the idea of family in our building. We are only great when we support and encourage each other. We need to continue modeling this with each other as colleagues in order for students to "buy in" and contribute positively to the culture. #122edchat
A1: We're working intentionally to become a true community school. Through partnerships in our community especially w/ the help of @ABC_Partnership we've been working hard to serve our community & embrace the strong traditional yet unique community we are at our school #122edchat
Culture is a huge part of our work/play together as a school community. We hosted a book tasting. We are reading #TLAP and #kidsdesrveit - game changing books for sure. As an instructional coach it is important to me that my words and actions align. #122edchat
A1 Although community is present in the mission/vision, it is not fully embraced/evident in daily interactions/decisions. We need to create more meaningful partnerships & innovative ways of collaborating to truly create that sense of community. Status quo must change. #122edchat
A1: Faculty & staff are connected by our “WHY,” but sometimes I think we forget that! We hurry to “do a job” or forget that we’re ALL in it together. Community building should be intentional & often. We’re a work in progress at my place! #122edchat
A1: We follow the 7 habits, mostly relating to bettering yourself to help the community! We are all constantly reminded that we are a school family, and our success is together. #122edchat
A1: School and community events. Sports often bring a lot together in the small town. It is awesome seeing the kids cheering and the seniors with their popcorn too. Drama productions are a hit as well in building the community. #122edchat
A1 I think being present in the mission and being executed is different. Everyone wants it but do they really work toward it? Thanks to @elawson1977 I have a pic in class #122edchat
Kristen from PA. I teach 6th grade physical science. In my activity today, they had to make a selected item out of another selected everyday object, on cards. One of the cards was a whoopie cushion and the everyday object was a grocery bag and a water bottle. #tlap#122edchat
A1 Every classroom starts each day with @responsiveclass morning meeting. We share a morning message, greeting, share out and have a game for 20ish minutes to start the day! #122edchat
A1: Building relationships is the bedrock of my practice. I do a lot of work to make my class a safe learning environment where Ss feel comfortable to take risks. #122edchat
A1: Community is included in wording, but needs to be present in everyday practices. I'm excited to see how out 1:1 next year enables more community interaction.
#122edchat
A1: After searching on our website and facebook, I realized that we don't have building community in our mission statement. This might be a great place to focus on. #122edchat
Anthony from Oklahoma here!
A1) We've been building community among teachers while sitting down at the capitol over the past couple of weeks. #122edchat
A1: The school is trying with theme days - like different dress up spirit days, but it could be better achieved with more interactions between classes and grades. Chances to work and play together #122edchat
A1: Certain schools within our district are much better at building community for sure. Some things they have tried are innovative ways to make connections both linked to education & outside of education. #122edchat
A1: It’s not my time,
It’s not your time,
It’s r-time!
Everyday we do community building from 7:50-8:10. It’s purposefully planned into the master schedule for teachers to build the classroom culture. #122edchat
A1: We are a small school in a small area. Our staff feels like family. We go out and hang out together. For our students we promote community service, go see our students do amazing things at extracurriculars (and sponsor some too). Love the Clarke County Community #122edchat
A1: There is definitely a feel of family within the school building. Lots of victories this week and the excitement spreads. Working to build connections with those outside of the building. #122edchat
A1 I had to google my school’s mission! Our last line starts we are a team. Let’s not get confused with what a mission/vision statement says and what really happens. You can say anything you want but it’s what you do that counts, right? #122edchat
A1 We are clearly working in a true partnership with our students for growth and community. It is a community full of passion and compassion. #122edchat
We have Ts volunteer after school tutoring, programs (drama, running, art, reading, art, sunshine Math, STEM, science team, etc), attend student extra curricular activities. We have an amazing PTA, mentor program, & community support from first responders & businesses
#122edchat
A1 @CaldwellElemen has an amazing community, largely thanks to our house system. It gives Ts opportunity to get to know Ts from other grade levels subjects they normally wouldn't see much and give Ss a sense of serious school spirit! #WeAreCaldwell#122edchat#LeadersAndLearners
A1) community is present in our vision...we are fortunate to have a big factory in town and our new Super is great about getting in touch to ensure our vision provides skills for the vision of different professions! #122edchat
In tonight's chat #ycsdchat we are discussing Hands on Learning. As the weather starts to warm it is important to keep students engaged and interested in the lesson. #122edchat#edtech#edchat
a1 One of our new "things" is to be more emotionally transparent to build relationships. I love to laugh with my Ss & can't wait to share the best with my husb when I get home. #122edchat
A1. Our mission is to be the premier middle school in Central KY. You could see community as making out community so strong that we are the best! #122edchat
A1 - We always focus on “ why, what and how.” It not only drives instruction but more importantly the culture. There is always room for improving. I’d love to see more kids understanding what it means. #122edchat
A1: I have tried enhance community engagement through school twitter and instagram accounts so they can see what we are doing. Interactive newsletters. Still looking for more ideas. Many parents come to building as guest readers and for events. #122edchat
Building community is not explicitly stated in our vision statement but it is a vital focus @CaldwellElemen - participating in community events, giving back to community, inviting them into school #122edchat
A1: We provide an environment where students can grown emotionally, academically, learn self-control, self-respect, and respect for others. Relationships and community are integral for these components. #122edchat
A1-2) I think the kids in our schools want the community, but it's not always understood what that means. They want to build, but need to push through to know what the kids really want, on a HS level. #122edchat
A1: Building relationships - we are a family. We celebrate each others successes. I'm working on incorporating community into each unit thanks to @RaeHughart & her amazing ideas! #122edchat#TeachFurther#masterychat
A2: I feel that Ts do a great job of sharing the experiences of the Ss throughout the day allowing all to see what is going on in the building. #122edchat
Q2 Every school has a story. By looking at your school’s social media accounts/website, how are building a community and building relationships present in your school story? #122edchat
Q2 Every school has a story. By looking at your school’s social media accounts/website, how are building a community and building relationships present in your school story? #122edchat
A1.Our school offers alot of opportunites for parent engagement events at the school where P and S come to participate in events from Math Game Night, Creative Writing Night, Scavenger Hunt's, etc. To build culture and community along with relationships! #122edchat
A1: Our Drama club motto is #family so that's a huge community builder right there. Also, we do a lot of fundraisers and events for local charities like making dinner at the the Ronald McDonald House. #122edchat
A1: When everyone feels safe to take risks, when there is trust, when you are corrected in private and celebrated in public, when leadership is embraced and encouraged and everyone helps out to find solutions rather than unconstructed criticism. #122edchat
A1: We really focus on establishing the family community of our school! We are 5 houses = 1 School! We are all in it together & we remind the Ss that teamwork makes the dean work! We need everyone on board to move our school! #122edchat
Q2 Every school has a story. By looking at your school’s social media accounts/website, how are building a community and building relationships present in your school story? #122edchat
A2: Very evident. Most staff is actively engaged, sharing the @simmonsknights1 story on Twitter thru the #simmonslearns, #rsd122cares, + #122edchat. The question always returns tho, "But what about the people that are not on Twitter?" Gotta find other avenues to share our story.
A2: This has been a huge shift this year in my school and district to start telling our story #WeAreNES#ADayInSchool. It's been wild to watch many of my staff begin to share out our story but what you can most see is kids come first and we're pushing boundaries #122edchat
A2: In our school community, we like to share our successes whenever possible. Twitter has been a great medium for this, since so many of us don't get to physically see each other on a daily basis due to schedule differences. #122edchat
A2 As a whole, the story is a mixture of many different events or periodic activities, there isn't necessarily a coherent flow in the story. Schools need to focus on the narrative and heart of a school and share their meaningful, authentic journey with their community. #122edchat
A1. St. Andrews School challenges itself to be a safe and supportive learning community for all. We build this upon a foundation of collaboration, essential learning and meaningful relationship. #122edchat
A1) One of the mission statements we have is "Serving the diverse needs of the community" Community building has to be between all stakeholders. It is great when all three - T,Ps,Ss come together for a project/initiative. #122edchat
A2: Teachers do a great job getting their stories out. If it is the awesome Ag and Art things that are being done or cosmo or robotics or Math my school and the staff do a great job getting the message out that learning is fun. #122edchat
Q2 Every school has a story. By looking at your school’s social media accounts/website, how are building a community and building relationships present in your school story? #122edchat
A2: We certainly have tried to provide some positive PR and tell our story through social media. We are also creating our story through #GoogleExpeditions to showcase York, Maine and why we #LoveWhereYouLive#ysdmindset#122edchat
A1: We focus on team building, cooperative learning, restorative practices, and building a sense of community within our classrooms and school. We could always do more to reach out and connect outside of the school and globally! #122edchat
A2: MHS began sharing news, successes, and classroom happenings on facebook. We don't have a school presence on twitter, but hopefully that will change soon. #122edchat
Q2 Every school has a story. By looking at your school’s social media accounts/website, how are building a community and building relationships present in your school story? #122edchat
A1: Community is definitely present in our school mission/vision, but it wasn’t always. Our principal, @O_L_Mayers, has transformed @KirkElementary. From families to business partner @EagleBurgmann, it’s present. EB donated $250k to our school too! Largest in district. #122edchat
In reply to
@NowakRo, @O_L_Mayers, @KirkElementary, @EagleBurgmann
#122edchat In our school we have All Pro Dads. Once a month dads eat breakfast with their child, hear another dad speak, and share about their child. Amazing program our principle set up
A1: we have a small school, small community. Some of my colleagues I had as teachers. The building has a family atmosphere, helping one another out. We often share ideas and starting a book study soon. #122edchat
A1: We have pictures of what goes on, we have motivational quotes on social media and lots of pics of what goes on. Our calendars have emphasis on academic, athletic, and club life. We try to make everyone feel at home! #122edchat@ERobbPrincipal@KGT_Educator
A2: Our school's twitter account @Simmonsknights1 is always highlighting the works of its great Ts & Ss. It allow us to see the amazing things we are all doing since we can't all be in each others classrooms. It's an amazing network of support & encouragement. #122edchat
A2: I've noticed that our school website/social media accounts are not very up-to-date. There is great information and it's accurate of what our school has to offer, but it lacks in the building community area. #122edchat
A1 We have a district wide character education initiative. There’s a a large focus on community wide events. One of my favorites is our multicultural feast! #122edchat
A2 my campus has a giant TV screen that constantly scrolls tweets from our school # In The Hallway. Students are always checking screen to see the cool things that are happening in each classroom #122edchat
Q2 Every school has a story. By looking at your school’s social media accounts/website, how are building a community and building relationships present in your school story? #122edchat

A2: Twitter presence is strong. You can get a snapshot from different classrooms and pull together and support one another. Also great outside connections and Ts building PLNs. Need to expand to other outlets and get the good news out there.
#122edchat
Q2 Every school has a story. By looking at your school’s social media accounts/website, how are building a community and building relationships present in your school story? #122edchat
A1: Building community is a part of our mission statement. However, I think that those of us teachers that really value it need to keep doing what we do and spend the word through PD opportunities. #122edchat
A2) We push out community through YouTube to show everyone what we can do. Social media has been tough to avoid the negativity, so we push #lovewhereyoulive#122edchat
A2: Social media is something we are currently developing! As of now, our AP is working so hard to show the hard work of the students in their daily schedule! The students feel so proud to see themselves on social media! & the twitter interactions #122edchat
A2b: It is important for us to tell our story, if we don't, someone else will! Also, the community may not have direct ties to the school, so how will you make them believe?
#122edchat
A2) We have a long way as a school (and district) in building our social media presence. Right now we share a few things here and there, but it's mainly a way to give announcements and not as a way of building a community. #122edchat
A2 I always think we could do a better job here. We share a lot but definitely not enough. So much awesome happening that a lot doesn't get shared. I try to do my part on Twitter and with #edtechlsc news. We do have some publications but SM seems were many folks are. #122edchat
A1: We are a small school in a small area. Our staff feels like family. We go out and hang out together. For our students we promote community service, go see our students do amazing things at extracurriculars (and sponsor some too). Love the Clarke County Community #122edchat

Q2 Every school has a story. By looking at your school’s social media accounts/website, how are building a community and building relationships present in your school story? #122edchat
A2: Twitter allows all of us from Simmons to support each other by getting glimpses into their classrooms that we otherwise wouldn't be able to see. I feel so much more connected to my colleagues who use social media than those that don't. #122edchat
Exactly. School culture is varied and I worked in some schools where togetherness and respect for kids and colleagues is real and in regular practie and other places not so much. #122edchat
A2: We are just beginning to move beyond student accomplishments and helping our community understand the breadth of our program with the hashtag #DidYouKnow#122edchat
A2: Building relationships is a key part of who we are at our school. We take the time to get to know our students and their academic, social/emotional needs, and their likes and dislikes at school and outside of school. #122edchat
My school embeds Full Values into our school day and lessons. Focusing on being here, being safe, being honest, committing to goals, letting go and moving on, and caring for self and others #122edchat
A2: we recently had a flood and one thing about New Richmond, during times of need - there is no place like it! Very community oriented, people helping each other out. #122edchat
Q2 - Our school has the typical accounts. While it is a start, there needs to be a greater emphasis on involvement. The issue is that many teens use different types, I.e. Snapchat, instagram. We focus on Facebook and Twitter. #122edchat

Q3: Just having a basic conversation is the first step that leads to listening and actually hearing what people are saying. This leads to being a kind and caring person that helps build relationships #122edchat
Q3 Great relationships are built on positive interactions. How are the different elements of kindness part of your relationship building process? #122edchat
Q3 Great relationships are built on positive interactions. How are the different elements of kindness part of your relationship building process? #122edchat

A2: We are just beginning to move beyond student accomplishments and helping our community understand the breadth of our program with the hashtag #DidYouKnow#122edchat
A2 We celebrate success by sharing good work being done in classes, sports, music, clubs. etc. We have a pretty good reputation to begin with so social media just adds a visual, a inside look. It’s important to show families/public what we’re about & give a peek inside #122edchat
I do have to add that our community has been behind the teacher walkout. There have been donation drives to bring food/gas cards/food gift cards to teachers traveling (1 hour each way) to the capitol over the past week and a half. #122edchat
A2) Social media is HUGE for us @CaldwellElemen because WE get to tell our story for the community to see. I feel as though it's brought us more support from parents, community members, etc. #122edchat
A3: EVERYONE has a story. Listen to it. Being observant of the non-verbal statements that Ss and Ts are making is crucial. Let's be honest, we might be the only people hearing them. #122edchat
A3: Starting each day with as clean of a slate as possible for each and every student allows me to continue building relationships without letting one bad day ruin things for me or a student. Grace and patience are beautiful things. #122edchat
A3: Kindness has so many elements to it from transparency to honesty to real to openness to helpfulness to willingness and support. Those are the things I try to center in my relationships as they are built. #122edchat
A3 I focus all of my energy on relationship building, on celebrating and uplifting, encouraging, listening. I try to make others feel special, to feel seen and feel important. It is important to lead with heart to build a culture of kindness, learning and empathy. #122edchat

#122edchat Q2 hi I’m Mary! Jumping in late. My principal does an incredible job tweeting out day to day accomplishments and fun memories of our Ss! It shows a clear pic of what our school’s about. She’s been inspiring most of us to keep up on our Twitter accounts to share!

Q2 Every school has a story. By looking at your school’s social media accounts/website, how are building a community and building relationships present in your school story? #122edchat
A3: this year I’m sitting down more, having more conversations, listening more, and asking more meaningful questions: how are you? What do you need from me? #122edchat
Being relationships are key to any positive interactions! I started a chapter of #GirlsontheRun at my school which helps create positive relationships, not only between students but between teachers and students! #122edchat
A3 I'm inspired by @digcitkids. They taught me how to #usetech4good. Since I am part of the #edtechlsc team I try to find ways to #bethatKINDofteacher and get Ss learning globally. It builds empathy and kindness is often in the air...or the cloud! #122edchat
A3: Smiling, having fun, and listening makes a huge difference! I always tell my Ss I am their safe keeper while they are at school. I'll do everything in my power to keep them safe. This allows them to feel safe to share feelings of frustration, sadness, etc. with me. #122edchat
We noticed that a post made on our FB page was shared by our community on their FB page. We need to make sure we are following our community and sharing their information. Thanks for the heads up on that. #122edchat
A2) I'm not sure my kids' schools are doing much of this, and it's a lost opportunity. School websites look the same across the district, which is important for branding, but there's little feel for the individual schools. And social media is limited or absent. #122edchat
Q2 Every school has a story. By looking at your school’s social media accounts/website, how are building a community and building relationships present in your school story? #122edchat
Love this! INVITE them into the school. If we want our stakeholders to feel like they have value, have them come over to see what you are doing. #122edchat

A4 I try to involve the community as much as possible in learning. Bring business owners in for authentic job interviews, include volunteer at food bank in lessons, create RAK assignments to make a difference in the community. Learning needs happen in & with community. #122edchat
A3 Kindness starts with why one becomes a teacher to children in the first place (It’s clearly not for the money, lol!). We teach because we love and respect kids and want to help them along their learning journey. #122edchat
A2. We are each other’s cheerleader and support system! We build each other up! We also push each other to take a risk, try something new- We uplift each other! Family sticks together! #122edchat
A3: this year I’m sitting down more, having more conversations, listening more, and asking more meaningful questions: how are you? What do you need from me? #122edchat
A4: We host "Parent with Technology" events in the evening each year. It's a great way to connect with parents. We have a presentation, but it's very informal & the parents love the ability to ask all kinds of questions at these events. Just need more attendance! #122edchat
A4: Really hoping to do more work in this area. Involve parents in more meaningful ways during the school day. Need to look at more ways to reach the outer community. Would love to hear what others do that works. #122edchat
A1 I think being present in the mission and being executed is different. Everyone wants it but do they really work toward it? Thanks to @elawson1977 I have a pic in class #122edchat
A4) I don't spend much time with parents, but kids always come up to me when they see me out and I think that reflects well with the community. My focus is always on family and the kids, I think they get it. #122edchat
A4: Our schools have many clubs that reach out to the community, community service hours, and I hope to start community tech share nights to support our 1:1 next year!
#122edchat
A4: An ex. of involving community within our school is Curriculum Night. Ps & Ss are invited to learn about their Ss curriculum in Math, ELA, & STEM. Math did an edu breakout box which was a blast! Ps also volunteer to help out at events like our recent Astronomy Fair! #122edchat
"Devote yourself to your community around you. Devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning." - Mitch Albom #122edchat (image quote)

A1 My school embeds Full Values into our school day and lessons. Focusing on being here, being safe, being honest, committing to goals, letting go and moving on, and caring for self and others #122edchat#122edchat
#122edchat A4 We have some pretty fun all school events throughout the year but I’m in contact daily with my Ss parents... I email out to them each morning “3 questions to ask your Ss at dinnertime” that relate to our day! This way they feel in the loop!!
Not required, just encouraged. Ts w/out accts had option of being photographed with a sign telling their why for #LoveMySchoolDay2018 which they school would post for them, but that was also not required. Not everyone is comfy with social media and thats ok #122edchat
A3. Some of the elements which we model in classroom are respect, empathy, kindness, sharing. Thinking of others and how they feel! Positivity, spreading kind word and gestures towards others. #122edchat
A4b: Our guidance departments and offices also do a great job of maintaining their websites to support the community with great information!
#122edchat
A4.2: After a rapport is built, our connections happen mostly via Remind. As a parent, I wanted to be with my kids to see what they were experiencing. Remind makes that possible. Daily I share pictures and videos of the kids so parents feel connected and cared for. #122edchat
A4: We host "Parent with Technology" events in the evening each year. It's a great way to connect with parents. We have a presentation, but it's very informal & the parents love the ability to ask all kinds of questions at these events. Just need more attendance! #122edchat
Hope they find their way here! I think we could do better in this area as well. Maybe they are at the store picking up an appetizer and are coming late to the storytelling party. If you don't do it, unfortunately someone else might tell it for you. #122edchat
A3 I'm inspired by @digcitkids. They taught me how to #usetech4good. Since I am part of the #edtechlsc team I try to find ways to #bethatKINDofteacher and get Ss learning globally. It builds empathy and kindness is often in the air...or the cloud! #122edchat

A4: We invite our families to events where our kiddos share their learning. Our PTA does a fantastic job encouraging our families to come in, volunteer, and be a part of our school family, too! #122edchat
A4: Our PTA is really involved and holds so many events for the kids. Talent show, help with field day, book fairs, game nights. We are fortunate to have their support #122edchat
A3: As you know, Roman—I am a huge advocate of POSITIVITY! Recently, I have started #ThankfulThursdays where I write sticky notes to both Ss & staff. Last week—pineapple sticky notes (pic coming). Tomorrow— 🍎 I’m going to tell them why they are the apple of my eye. #122edchat

A4. We have a very active PAC as well as various volunteer opportunities. Amazing support and attendance for special events, celebration of learning. #122edchat
A4: I’ve always tried to pull in community members to volunteer in my classroom or come in as guest readers!! It takes a village!! I want others to know that they are always welcome!! I 💙 having people believe in & support my Ss! #122edchat
"Devote yourself to your community around you. Devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning." - Mitch Albom #122edchat (image quote)
A3
For Ss, most important for me is letting them start fresh daily.
For Ts, making sure put them before myself. Today’s example, watched classes so Ts could go get parfait (spell?) early instead of waiting till special area.
#TeachersDeserveIt#122edchat#HappyTeacherHappyLife
Q3 Great relationships are built on positive interactions. How are the different elements of kindness part of your relationship building process? #122edchat
A4 Our high school does amazing things with their yearly SMAC (Stillwater Makes a Change) week. Fundraisers and so many different activities every year. High school students even go into all the other schools to interact and get them involved. #122edchat
A4 We bring the community in by going out to them! We help with city events, being a part of Rotary, supporting local business during the summer with staff luncheons...when the see us...they want to come and join us! #122edchat
a4 #122edchat Parent/teacher nights I would have a rotating silent film of ss signing, posters etc With better LMS it can be online too if you have tech savvy parents in the school. Even samples of my signing "helmet" included them.
A2 my principal does an awesome job of keeping parents in the loop on social media! Facebook is a key way for parents to see how awesome their children are at school! #122edchat
Q5 What is one thing you can do, as an educator, to help add building a community and fostering positive relationships as integral parts of your school’s culture? #122edchat
Q5 What is one thing you can do, as an educator, to help add building a community and fostering positive relationships as integral parts of your school’s culture?
#122edchat
A4: I'm hoping to make a lot of community connections very soon! Connecting each unit I teach to a career & tying it directly to our community! #122edchat
I know folks who are adamant that twitter is the devil (no thanks to high profile twitter abusers) and many don't want to be told what to do. Requiring or "strongly encouraging" staff to use social media makes posts ingenuine, no? #122edchat
A4. Parents are offered opportunities for volunteering in the school and in classrooms. Parents can come in and have lunch with their child! #122edchat
A4: We have had Family Fun Days for our elementary students. Parents were able to come and spend a couple hours with their kids and do various activities in stations. This is really in area we could improve though and something we have discussed. #122edchat
A3: when we were still following our basal txt book I "modified" the LEQs/UEQs to include #choosekind. I take lessons/articles from the website "Teaching Tolerance" we discuss in class. Today I had my first morning meeting (I called it a "kindness circle") #122edchat
Q3 Great relationships are built on positive interactions. How are the different elements of kindness part of your relationship building process? #122edchat
#122edchat A2 We try to post as much “real time” information about our classes as possible. My teachers do a great job providing me with pictures/information or invite me in to document what is happening in the classroom.
A3 building relationships are key to positive interactions! I started a chapter of #GirlsontheRun at my school which helps create positive relationships, not only between students but between teachers and students! #122edchat
A4 We also work to show the community a great deal of gratitude and appreciation - school t-shirts, pictures with @heycubbybear, invites to special events etc.... #122edchat
A5: Be visible. Be available. Support students, staff, and the community alike. Don't be "above" any task that comes along! If you see someone in need, be what they need. #122edchat
A5: Continue modeling a positive outlook on relationships and school culture, contributing my time and effort in various activities whenever possible. #122edchat
A5: For me this means continuing to learn and serve my community. I've started to build relationships this year in my first year now it's time to continue building and sustaining relationships. #122edchat
A5 I will always go forth with a positive and kind attitude. No matter the hurdles, the negativity, I will spread joy and gratitude. I will uplift and celebrate and make sure the positive covers any other obstacles that may exist. I will LEAD. #122edchat@MrsHankinsClass
A4: My school partners with a local bank. Once a week, they set up a booth inside our front door for students to set up a savings account and make deposits. They also provide snacks and food for school events. #122edchat
A4 Personally I do authors shares like Camp Tell A Story and Poetry Coffee House.
Our school invites with musicals, kick ball, All Pro Dads, Parent Nights through the year
#122edchat
A4) Start early! In @SBSDBOE EVERY Kg parent has an individualized 1:1 meeting with the T & the student BEFORE the school year begins. We call this "Wishes and Dreams" meeting. It is ahhhhmazing and so proud that we do it! Our Ts are superb and it helps to build a comm. #122edchat
A4: Invite them in! We use #skype ,#volunteerng , anything! We have Skyped with meteorologists, the local PD has come in to help us out! Get the community IN your room! #122edchat
I think there's a tendency to sit on good reputations -- why start something that invites criticism? But there IS criticism and there ARE other stories out there.
#122edchat
A5) Just keep working on the positive aspect of the kids and focus on their successes, especially when they sprout from failures. Know that it might not be immediate, the slow game can reap the best rewards. #122edchat
A4: Family Reading/Curriculum Night is the first step, but so many more opportunities available that I'd like to start accessing within the actual classroom. @mdeegan122 and @RaeHughart are already doing this. I can't wait to watch & learn more from them!
#122edchat
A4-@CaldwellElemen does a fantastic job going out to our community and serving with them! This builds strong relationship with our community! #122edchat
A5: I'm trying to get the other classroom with Remind. This year parents don't forget days off or activities they committed to.And the best part...you can sit down in the beginning of the year and schedule all announcements! #122edchat
A5: Constantly model building positive relationships, especially to Ss. Reach out to colleagues to help brighten their day! A small compliment can go a long way. As for building community, I would like to involve parents in math more, need to brainstorm ideas for this! #122edchat
A5: Transparency and Trust. Transparency to share the triumphs and the failures, the breakthroughs and the growth.
Trust to share without hesitation, take risks to best reach all students, and to value relationships over any grade.
#122edchat
A5: I am really working to get more social media going with our staff and the community at large to support our culture. We do so much and such a great way to share! #122edchat
Hey Danielle! Have you guys considered letting the kids take the wheel in promoting what you guys are doing via social media. Maybe a "social media internship"? Great way to teach digital-citizenship? #122edchat
That is so true. I have been impressed with the way my admins use the tech they think we should try...during PD. They don't have to say, "Try this." We see it. #122edchat
Id rather have an overwelming amount of positive noise that is constructive, if not totally genuine, than more hate, yelling, and finger pointing on social media. That juice is worth the squeeze for me. #122edchat
A3: slow to criticize, quick to support. Active listening, offer help, don’t gossip, lie, and keep promises and secrets. Ask about personal things and follow up. Be authentically enthusiastic about ideas and share your great ideas. Try to avoid complaining. #122edchat
A3 taking time to get to know the S and their family, finding out what interests them and trying to be a part of that. I go to my Ss afterschool/weekend activities. I love doing this bc I support the S and spend time with the family #122edchat
A5: Transparency and Trust. Transparency to share the triumphs and the failures, the breakthroughs and the growth.
Trust to share without hesitation, take risks to best reach all students, and to value relationships over any grade.
#122edchat
A5 - Twitter! Ripple effect of positive press. Also, modeling those actions and activities that students feel connected with. Most parents aren’t truly excited over things, unless they see the value for their child. #122edchat
A special THANK YOU to our gracious hosts and ministers of kindness, @NowakRo and @MrCoachEli, for leading #122edchat this evening. So grateful to be partners in the education process with you both.
A4: We have a "Community in the Classroom" day. A local group that provides grants seeks out volunteer teachers and pairs them up with community members so they can come into our schools and learn more about what we do. #122edchat
A5: Don't partake in parking lot conversations and whispering behind doors. I think we choose our influence on community. Do we build or tear down? #122edchat
Q5 What is one thing you can do, as an educator, to help add building a community and fostering positive relationships as integral parts of your school’s culture? #122edchat
#122edchat A5: Building strong and frequent communication between home and school. We are all on the same team!! I adore how involved my parents get once I invite them. It helps me gain reinforcement when I need some help with a Ss’s particular need.
A5 Smile more, support more, listen more, share more. I do these things but perhaps doing them even just a little bit more could make even a bigger difference. #122edchat
Q5 What is one thing you can do, as an educator, to help add building a community and fostering positive relationships as integral parts of your school’s culture? #122edchat
A5: We are always looking at new ways to include more of our surrounding community with our schools. @RupBoysDad have been out in the community a great deal lately filming to tell our story on #GoogleExpeditions#LoveWhereYouLive#122edchat
A5: Be available, be transparent, be welcoming and inviting. When people see these qualities they are more apt to want to be involved and come to school to help! #122edchat
A4 - I saw someone else mention food so I guess I can't use that answer 😉😉
Some parents will always be hard to involve - working multiple jobs, many siblings at different schools, etc. Have to be flexible with time of various events to maximize potential #122edchat
A5 Continue to model how to build and sustain relationships while continuing to share the power and significance of them! Relationships of the heart of what we do...Our “Ubuntu” House represents Unity “I am...because we are...l #122edchat
A5 I send emails (like a newsletter) for my class often to help parents know what is being taught and how to help them help their child. When it comes to middle school math, many parents don't know how to help (or understand) the topics being taught. #122edchat
a5 #122edchat Teaching ss that it was proactive to ask for the things they needed to build their learning world, led to some crazy group projects. Community can go when you are all pitching in. This is me showing how to "be the baby" in a script. I am not an actor.
Agreed - and tweeting the good work we do with and for kids is one reason why using social media can be valuable. As a working parent, I'd love to see more of what my kids do in their classes. #122edchat
A5. Welcoming P in for activities, sharing pictures with them of their children, having the Ss show P their work in classroom, Talking to P and welcoming them inside the school! #122edchat
A3: I am trying to spread positivity through health and wellness with the staff. I started a water challenge last month and in that time I was able to have some positive conversations with people I never really spoke with. #122edchat
Q3 Great relationships are built on positive interactions. How are the different elements of kindness part of your relationship building process? #122edchat
A5: I always try to be that positive, fun person. I like to walk down the halls with a smile-greeting people with a hello, high five, fist bump, hug, or pat on the shoulder. I strive to be there for staff and students when things get tough. #122edchat
And since we're talking about relationships, listen to parents' stories, too. Many mixed experiences with school. They'll want to know what's better. #122edchat
A3: EVERYONE has a story. Listen to it. Being observant of the non-verbal statements that Ss and Ts are making is crucial. Let's be honest, we might be the only people hearing them. #122edchat
Thank you everyone once again! Thx @MrCoachEli Don't forget to join #BeTheOne tonight with @sheehyrw at 8:45 pm EDT/7:45 CDT.
Keep being amazing and inspiring for kids and educators! You are amazing.
Had a wonderful time learning tonight! Enjoy the rest of your week. #122edchat
Thank you for sharing in our learning journey about Building Community. Your insight was greatly appreciated! From the bottom of my heart, thank you for participating in this chat. As a learning community, we can go further. Thank you @MrCoachEli for co-moderating. #122edchat
A3: I greet each student at the door with a smile and high five every day. I try to smile and laugh frequently. I say thank you. I compliment people. I listen. #122edchat
A5 fight the negative with your positivity. Lead the charge for your students and peers with your interactions with everyone. Realize that as an educator you don’t get to have an off day and not pay the consequences #122edchat
Q5 What is one thing you can do, as an educator, to help add building a community and fostering positive relationships as integral parts of your school’s culture? #122edchat
Q5 What is one thing you can do, as an educator, to help add building a community and fostering positive relationships as integral parts of your school’s culture? #122edchat
Our schools do a tremendous job. We fortunately have career areas and for example our cosmetology students will go to a nursing home and have a day of beauty for the residents #122edchat
#122edchat I am proud to work at @mulberryes
I keep in mind I am a school teacher not a class teacher.
I make sure I am aware of the people around me & get to know them
Know names, & be someone they tell their story too bc you care enough
Q5 What is one thing you can do, as an educator, to help add building a community and fostering positive relationships as integral parts of your school’s culture? #122edchat
#122edchat A5: At my 1st school, parents & students came in a week before school to see the classroom... they got to place their name tag somewhere and we did reading assessments....and spent a bit of 1 on 1 time together :)
A2: Our school is definitely new to the social media scene. However, it’s amazing to see so many great things going on in classrooms right next door. I’m excited to see how many of our teachers have jumped right in! Love it! #122edchat
Q2 Every school has a story. By looking at your school’s social media accounts/website, how are building a community and building relationships present in your school story? #122edchat
A5) I set up a monthly challenge that encourages them to walk through rooms, “steal” ideas/boards/techniques/strategies! There is always awesome participation #122edchat
I need to sit down with my administration to help discuss why it is important to be more present on social media. Many are afraid of it (because of the horror stories they hear) #122edchat
SO MANY PROJECTED FEELINGS. I tell my parents just as often as I tell my students if there’s anything you need or that I can help you with let me know I’m here!
#122edchat
a5: I refuse to keep "the count" (days left b4 summer break) - when other Ts (or my daughter) tell me I purposefully forget. For many of our Ss, school is their primary source of food, safety, routine, and LOVE, so "the countdown" is not happy. #122edchat
Q5 What is one thing you can do, as an educator, to help add building a community and fostering positive relationships as integral parts of your school’s culture? #122edchat
A5: I can keep building relationships and keep reminding myself that not every student is their to learn, sometimes they just want someone to listen and want to be a part of something special/unique. #122edchat
A2: We have a Twitter feed for our school hashtag on our website. Teachers and admin sharing great things students & staff are doing- shows the relationships we have. I think we can do more to include our community though #122edchat
Something fun you can do at the end of the year or summer is Pizza In The Park. We invite families from our classes (mike and I) to play and eat. The families sometimes bring sides. So much fun!
#122edchat
A5) Always do what it takes. You are never too big, higher up, etc. Do what it takes (teach a lesson, cover a class, clean the cafe tables, drive the bus :) Model that everyone has a role and we are all valued and appreciated #122edchat
Was getting food today and saw one of my students and his dad. The dad said, “all of my kids thought you were an amazing teacher.” It will always be about spreadibg a love of learning and kids. #122edchat
A5: I will always be positive and spread joy. Whether it be from a smile or a hug, making Ss/staff laugh, writing notes, or my daily/weekly quotes on Twitter—my goal is to be a positive role model. Being positive is definitely contagious & something worth catching! #122edchat
A5 I think my school is lacking a bit in this area. A few of us are trying by making sure we say hi to every S and staff member we see in the hallways. Its a small and simple start that I think can catch on. I also always try to learn other Ss names. #122edchat
A5 Tech can be a value added tool in community building. For ex: using @padlet to have discussion with classes across our district, @Flipgrid convos across states/countries too. The Q is how cozy or how big do you want this community? Possibilities = endless. #122edchat
Love your thinking here. Trying to avoid may only put you further behind in the long run. I like think bigger picture. #WhatIf we invited the criticism and used it to fuel being better or building relationships with those who see things differently. #122edchat
A5: Be positive. People don't want to be a part of something when all they hear is complaints. Let's start sharing the positive, amazing things going on in our schools. Let's ask questions and listen to the responses. #122edchat
@jmattmiller says safe teaching is actually risky teaching. Huge risk in what doesn't happen. I think the same mindset applies here. Safe storytelling is actually risky storytelling. Share your story! #122edchat
I think there's a tendency to sit on good reputations -- why start something that invites criticism? But there IS criticism and there ARE other stories out there. #122edchat
A3. Kindness is always present in our building/room- My kids have used @Flipgrid to wish 3rd, 4th, 5th graders Good Luck on testing- we have put cards on staff cars, walked and delivered Snowman sooo to our police and fire dept. sent packages to our twitter friends #122edchat
Super interesting idea, Anthony! This is why I love this #PLN & #122edchat! Thanks for sparking something in my mind! I am going to explore this idea at my place!
This looks and sounds awesome. How have you expanded an "open door" to people even eager to push it down? In other words, is there diverse engagement from families and the community? #122edchat
A1. Our primary focus is FAMILY❤️ doesn’t matter if a child isn’t in my class they are still apart of our family! Our school is a family unit and we invite community all they Year- door always open! #122edchat
I agree. We can't just stick kids on devices and then go do what we need done.
We have to show parents how technology can be meaningful and purposeful. Building better learners #122edchat
Honestly, that is where we see the most problems, so it just makes sense to include parents in the conversation as well. We cannot control everything, but we certainly can be a support system to educate everyone.
Mike's one word is leader so he took that on full blown.
Being a good teacher, and church leader, and playing with those sweet girls. He is doing great. Wish you guys got to see him but we are enjoying him here for sure. He said this summer he will get back on #122edchat
An important message to "top" districts. You don't just #TellYourStory for reactionary reasons, in response to criticism or misinformation or lack of understanding. It's for all schools and districts, and it should be as constant a process as teaching and learning. #122edchat
Love your thinking here. Trying to avoid may only put you further behind in the long run. I like think bigger picture. #WhatIf we invited the criticism and used it to fuel being better or building relationships with those who see things differently. #122edchat
I jump in late due to work timing conflict. David, from Covina, CA. Teacher/tech mentor. I have no selfies in th class. Too busy working w/ Ss. #122edchat
I'm big on "sharing the good." I also see a value in sharing the growth and learning that comes from the not-so-good. Think of what that models to students. #k12prchat#122edchat
#122edchat
A3: Every day is a new day. Gives each student a chance to start over and start fresh. Focus on the positive & listening to what they have to say. Its important to them so its important to me. #122edchat
A3: Kindness is key to building relationships with our students' parents. I love for the parents to know that I am available and willing to connect whenever/however it is convenient for them. This is usually through the Remind app. #122edchat
A2: its in development. It’s not so much part of the everyday. The website is the main portal and is updated daily. SM accounts moreso from athletics and ASB. #122edchat
