A1: Without it, I am a pompous idiot in an echo chamber that just thinks he is right. Collaboration keeps me in check.
RT
Q1 Why is collaboration important in a COL?
A1: We're better together - collaboration is inherent in a COL
I punctuate text messages...
A1: Some of "my" best ideas were "stolen" from my colleagues. Not sure where I would be without my peers in person & twittershpere
A1: Collaboration is how innovation and great ideas happen. No great idea was born in isolation!
A1: Cultures aren't made up of "I's"...they are made up of "we's". You have to work/share/communicate/give/take with ppl
Hi Im TAmara, hailing from the island of Anguilla, ICT curriculum officer, hope I'm not too late
A1 Collaboration is fundamental to a COL. It is the base and the glue of the COL structure.
https://t.co/gNA9ldG2D7
Q1 Why is collaboration important in a COL?
A1: COL requires collab so that we can all grow together - that's how innovation happens
A1 In order for all to learn, all must collaborate
A1: W/o collaboration, we do not grow. We think things are being done well (they're not), and it only hurts the Ss education.
A1 Collaboration is important because no one can do everything but everyone can do something.
Q1. Collaboration enables us to expand views, reflect on multiple ideas=create new learning for all and ultimately for our students
A1 Collaboration is a fundamental component; without it you have no
A1: We model for Ss what successful work looks like. Gives Ss practice at a real world skill.
A1: My students have had stellar lessons because of collaboration. They've had multiple teachers planning lessons for them.
A1 You create a positive culture with collaboration. You create a negative culture w/out collaboration.
modeling cannot be undersold, either in school or life
You're not the only one...I have anxiety when people don't.
Steal away from tonight! https://t.co/jWjRTm1YqS
A1: Some of "my" best ideas were "stolen" from my colleagues. Not sure where I would be without my peers in person & twittershpere
A1 Ss must be specifically taught what collaboration looks like, sounds like, benefits, related challenges
A1: Isn't it better when "we" are in community with ppl...that happens with collaboration. Being on an island is lonely
COL helps us see other points of views and perspectives, it provides opportunities for unity and shared vision
A1: The best collaboration I've experienced has been with the wife- she happens to be a teacher as well.
Love this idea. How many of us were "taught" how to collaborate? Not me. I only think I know how to do it. https://t.co/vYhX966jjC
A1 Ss must be specifically taught what collaboration looks like, sounds like, benefits, related challenges
You're so right. Too often Ts assume Ss know how to collaborate. Model, model, model to teach collaboration.
Jeremey, HS env sci and biology. Lurking
As half of another teacher couple, I can second this!
A1 We learn best from each other & can make better gains when we use each other's expertise.
I hear that, our best family meals are when the hubby and I cook together
A1 Collaboration with those I trust challenges me share my strengths & to ask for help with my weaknesses. https://t.co/UnkWgLTSDg
Q1. Collaboration enables us to expand views, reflect on multiple ideas=create new learning for all and ultimately for our students
Many new faces here- Plz build your PLN!
A1 Collaboration is what families do, and what's more cultural than family?
A1: Collaboration allows ideas to percolate, generating more ideas...developing trust that no idea is bad.
Collaboration is the key. YouTube & Twitter have allowed me to collaborate and learn from others. Internet is great tool
Without collaboration from & wouldn't exist.
A1 the knowledge and expertise is present on all staffs. We must collaborate in order to tap into that knowledge and expertise
Truth - some are resistant to collaborate because they see no value. Model the benefits. https://t.co/abil0uRs5N
Love this idea. How many of us were "taught" how to collaborate? Not me. I only think I know how to do it. https://t.co/vYhX966jjC
A1 Ss must be specifically taught what collaboration looks like, sounds like, benefits, related challenges
Hi Jeremy. Lurk away or jump on in!
A1: bc EVERYONE needs SOMEONE to make them better. It ignites ideas, fuels passions, motivates in the valleys, celebrates the peaks.
True...individual think time is also important ala -need balance between collab and independent?
A1 Collaboration requires norms of collaboration which must be taught & modeled; Ss need practice with feedback; yes even HS Ss :)
Q2 Does your classroom/school foster collaboration among Ss & among Ts? How?
ESPECIALLY HS students :) https://t.co/Xbkf1VBSTQ
A1 Collaboration requires norms of collaboration which must be taught & modeled; Ss need practice with feedback; yes even HS Ss :)
Good point. My 'car time' is special. I need time for myself too. Good ideas come when driving.
No doubt...but those who isolate typically aren't interested in collaborating...ever! https://t.co/t2TbTVBnAe
True...individual think time is also important ala -need balance between collab and independent?
They see no value or are fearful to put themselves out there
A2: Sadly, I think we, including I, could do a better job. It happens mostly by accident between classes. No real structure.
RT Q2 Does your classroom / school foster collaboration among Ss & among Ts? How?
RT
Q2 Does your classroom / school foster collaboration among Ss & among Ts? How?
A2: We have focused on the Kagan Collaborative Learning strategies to teach and model positive collaboration in the classroom.
A2: Continuous work on our culture + one of the standards of behavior for students.
A2: Classroom = YES; School? = TRICKY - req'd collab (PDP), but no time carved out. How can we make it happen?
A1: collaboration can lead to synergy. Gives us even greater ideas than we started with in the first place. 1+1=3
A2: 's teacher lab model is one to strive for. It increases with no pressure or hoop jumping.
Good point-I think isolate is different than ind. thinking and reflecting
A1 Collaboration pulls us of our islands & shines a light on things we are doing well, things we can tweak & things we can let go.
A2 Our T lab structure fosters collaboration among educators.
Kudos to & for facilitating labs!
A2 Yes, made evident by support for developing & implementing PD with at least one other T
A1:Collaboration is important bc life isn't lived & learning doesn't happen alone. We need to checkin & bounce ideas off each other
Trista - elementary principal from Iowa. A little late.
Can you tell me more about your "teacher lab"? I'm intrigued!
Looking at the whole district, it happens in pockets. We need to be more explicit.
Absolutely Absolutely true - no vulnerability.
A2: Through our Ss collaborate & problem solve constantly to make their product better every time
A2 scheduled team time every week for our grade teams. Support staff invited to attend monthly. Half days on PD days for team time
A2: Ss, yes. Ts schedule doesn't easily lead to collaboration. We're bulding more collaborative time for Ts into the schedule
Can you share more about the T Lab?
A2: We try to find time for Ts to collaborate. We are creating time for Ss to collaborate. Ts=Common planning; Ss+Socratic Seminar
A2: Everyone is involved in school improvement process and contributes. Subcommittees feed into the steering committee.
A2 We try to collaborate. It is difficult to collaborate as a building but we do a great job of sharing ideas when possible
True..the learning is the work...must build relationships through the muck of doing :)
A1 As an administrator, I can't forget direct negative relationship between working alone & teacher buy in, which is bad 4 schls.
A2: common dept. planning period daily SHOULD foster that teacher collaboration - we still need to grow!
Time is finite resource. Leadership needs to re-structure priorities to make space for collaboration. https://t.co/gB2maUu6CM
A2: Classroom = YES; School? = TRICKY - req'd collab (PDP), but no time carved out. How can we make it happen?
A2 When I think of teacher labs, MTSS, and SBG...then I have to go with a BIG yes.
A2 GAFE has made collaboration easy in schools. Also urging Ss to read/comment on other Ss' blogs to share voices & perspective
Such an interesting observation - some Ts naturally find e/o, others need direction
This. https://t.co/GEUquZD6Gf
Time is finite resource. Leadership needs to re-structure priorities to make space for collaboration. https://t.co/gB2maUu6CM
A2: Classroom = YES; School? = TRICKY - req'd collab (PDP), but no time carved out. How can we make it happen?
CRITICAL Ts need time to plan, reflect, moderate S work- this is how we all grow as professionals
A2: This yr started a snail's pace process of starting PLC process with T. W/ Ss we ask them to "work together", but really collab?
A2 T's have common planning time during the day & every morning. Required once a week, but often meet more
A2.2: Our late start Weds. are set up for collaboration time for Ts. We reflect on our practice and what is working in the school.
A2 Student blogs, classrm OneNotes+other collaborative software, Ss planning/creating in small grps https://t.co/uO1oTKep7I
Q2 Does your classroom/school foster collaboration among Ss & among Ts? How?
A2: Is required collaboration through meetings true collaboration?
Noticing TIME coming up in A2. We prioritize things that are important. If collaboration is important, TIME will be made for it.
A2 There is an expectation we are to work together; provide one another feedback; admin above invites it
A2 YES, common planning, grade level/cross level meetings, fostering "talking classrooms" not compliant, silent ones, EdCamp PD
We all need to grow. Common time is needed. https://t.co/PmfY5ys12m
A2: common dept. planning period daily SHOULD foster that teacher collaboration - we still need to grow!
Glad you're joining us tonight! Welcome Committee.
Important distinction b/w "group work" and real collaboration https://t.co/LPvyEfczND
A2: This yr started a snail's pace process of starting PLC process with T. W/ Ss we ask them to "work together", but really collab?
In that form, not really, bot often I have found the means facilitate the ends. Thoughts?
Yes. First step is defining collaboration: knowing that we will create something together we couldnt apart. https://t.co/7dRp5kSgsx
Q2 Does your classroom/school foster collaboration among Ss & among Ts? How?
A2 Yep tech should help make some time/space where collab. couldn't happen before, though no cure-all https://t.co/zmMiFunCYr
A2 GAFE has made collaboration easy in schools. Also urging Ss to read/comment on other Ss' blogs to share voices & perspective
When we think we're done, we will be...in the negative sense.
A2 Our current system is not designed to foster collaboration; in fact, it often works against it; no R&D time for Ts
Struggle is for a time when admin can collaborate. Many meetings, but not always collaborative time
Nope. Especially not when it happens once a month at a faculty/dept meeting
Yes. Everyone is at a different place in the journey. We jeep modeling and giving opportunities.
I don’t understand why after schl is rarely treated as common planning time. Little bit each week goes a long way.
Q3 How do we create a culture of collaboration in our school communities?
"If you think you're done, you've just begun," is a common phrase in my room.
When this starts to happen - you know COL is growing at the school
I definitely think it's important to meet as a school community, just wondering how you build real collaboration
A2: Tip: Be greater every day and be grateful for every day!
Tool: Great Twitter chats like and
. Nope! In that case, you’re doing it working. :)
A2 How about modeling collaboration by collaborating to solve school issues w/Ss?
A3: putting on thick skin, inviting people into our rooms, authentic PLC time.
Thank you!!! Glad to be here. so much to learn from all of everyone
Our culture is if you don't coach, get outta there. You're right though.
What if....
YES! https://t.co/x97PIR3G5y
A2 How about modeling collaboration by collaborating to solve school issues w/Ss?
A2: with the flipped classroom, my Ss collaborate almost daily. Peer instruction, discovery, turn to your neighbor, and teach-me's
RT Q3 How do we create a culture of collaboration in our school communities?
A3: We have to be willing to listen to others and understand their strengths to build a culture of collaboration
Thick skin LEADS to allowing people into our rooms - so important https://t.co/0Lg9Z9mDcj
A3: putting on thick skin, inviting people into our rooms, authentic PLC time.
A3 Let’s be better about sharing T work that isn’t perfect. Good, bad, ugly w/ honest reflection time can help get Ts used 2 fb
And we from you, I'm sure!
Collaboration takes time. We've followed and created a repository for called for PLN's and celebrations.
A2 Ts observing/supporting each other, sharing prof goal progress. https://t.co/uO1oTKep7I
Q2 Does your classroom/school foster collaboration among Ss & among Ts? How?
Friend might say, "Required" indicates more a "contrived" school culture than a "collaborative" one.
A3: Ts can't expect time to be scheduled, so we need to make time outside school hours. Pub PD? PD and a Meal? Whatever works.
A3: Model. For Ss. For Staff. For admin. As Ts we don't' have to wait for admin. to tell us to collab. We can just do it.
A3: Start by talking...ask questions...get out of comfort zone and find out about ppl...then partner up...do something creative
Flip it.
https://t.co/n8RqRHNEXi
A2: with the flipped classroom, my Ss collaborate almost daily. Peer instruction, discovery, turn to your neighbor, and teach-me's
A3 True collaboration begins w/ trusting relationships. Think about those you collaborate with who push your thinking or affirm it.
A3: I think building a school community with common goals is a step to build true collaboration. It's hard to get everyone though
That's what we're working on and hoping that through GAFE we would see more T collaboration
A3: celebrate, highlight and reflect on good collaboration. Gather data on what happens for Ss when Ts work together and SHARE
Thank you! I will follow . https://t.co/zMsSyRYjVm
Collaboration takes time. We've followed and created a repository for called for PLN's and celebrations.
Admin need to be vulnerable as learners too then...otherwise, not safe for Ts
A3: Find times to bring parents and business leaders to help celebrate Ss. Positive collaboration is so powerful!
This highlights the importance of a strong, consistent school philosophy. Everyone operates w/the same WHY https://t.co/7c8Uo9iM4t
A3: I think building a school community with common goals is a step to build true collaboration. It's hard to get everyone though
A3: Model what we desire. Our school community is not much of a community if it is centered on one person's ideas/beliefs.
KaBoom - that's the word of the day TRUST = the beginning of collaboration - without it nothing can happen. https://t.co/uer59Dthcr
A3 True collaboration begins w/ trusting relationships. Think about those you collaborate with who push your thinking or affirm it.
A3: minor emergency at the house. Cuddle time w10.y.o. Thanks 4 the connections, sorry have 2 leave so soon!
A3.2: We have incorporated Peer Observations this year. Open door observations for one week/quarter. Been awesome for feedback!
Thanks , it is a slow, steady process predicated on trust & relationships. Creatively collaborating w/new tech. tools.
Sorry PLN... have to jump out for a bit as my kids need me for some collaboration time. :)
A3: Make time for staff to talk with each other while admin joins and/or listens.
. Yes. I’m always leading with ?s & processing rather than answers and demands. Tough to prove sincerity, though.
A3 Leadership models relationship building, trust & growth mindset as collaborative culture foundatiion. Same for Ts in classroom.
Agree, if it is forced upon you, it's not collaboration, it's coercion
Absolutely! You need those people in your lives that challenge you! https://t.co/CTQTaf8Hay
A3 True collaboration begins w/ trusting relationships. Think about those you collaborate with who push your thinking or affirm it.
on what we spend our time is a true indicator of our desires and beliefs https://t.co/utENaZkAtK
Noticing TIME coming up in A2. We prioritize things that are important. If collaboration is important, TIME will be made for it.
Agreed. Asking tough questions & pushing people's thoughts. Calling out great things Ts & Ss are doing
I love to have peers drop in unannounced - esp. if they leave me notes or share a doc
A3 Model it. Make it a goal. Make it a part of what you do every day. It becomes the culture. https://t.co/oZbZhBeXMI
Q3 How do we create a culture of collaboration in our school communities?
A3 collaboration in a COL demands inclusion of all. Islands or pockets will not effectively sustain momentum. Purposeful.
A3.3: Peer Observations have taken the sting and nerve out of formal observations. Barely notice when people come in anymore.
A3 Leaders should model listening to new and differing ideas, giving value to all. Give airtime to those willing to share. Listen
A3 Through sports our schools communities come together, it is the one time of the year the teachers , students & parents are one
sounds like the teacher labs!
. and that needs to begin as a grassroots effort - spreading from Ts to Ts
Well put, Michele! I am grateful to be surrounded, supported, & challenged by an outstanding team https://t.co/wqDDUQl6Zj
A3 True collaboration begins w/ trusting relationships. Think about those you collaborate with who push your thinking or affirm it.
was easy to be sincere with focus at our school :) am proficient :) have been open w my questions
A3 please, please, please encourage in-person convos. Value eye contact and tone, it helps https://t.co/KFsA6sciV3
Q3 How do we create a culture of collaboration in our school communities?
Q4 How do you create global connectivity to collaborate outside of the "four walls" of your classroom / school?
We've developed a form for feedback to the T and to admin It's been a great way to build community between Ts.
A3 Love that we can collaborate on so much - Hattie, evaluation, MTSS, best practice, STEM, etc etc - with admin.
Rt
Q4 How do you create global connectivity to collaborate outside of the "four walls" of your classroom / school?
Yes, but everyone plans sometime outside of school day. Can’t get it done otherwise
A4 We really don't have an option, on a small island we must connect, Most Caribbean islands are good at connecting w/ each other
A4 Have worked with Ts on building powerful PLN through Twitter and chats like
A4: Leading some PD next year on being a connected educator. Hope to have all the Ts collaborating with the world!
GOOGLE, tech is fantastic enhancement of great pedagogy and instruction....key word
A4: Intentionally connect with people outside of Gen. Cty to expand my PLN and learn from everyone- like on
Agreed. Can be done in 10 minutes before or after school -No need to be formal
A4: Skype in the classroom, Google hangouts.
. Same. Love working w/depts outside of my experience. Forcing my support and processing lens.
Please feel free to share & join in our growing daily PLN . It takes a village... https://t.co/VDK3Y7QXE9
Thank you! I will follow . https://t.co/zMsSyRYjVm
Collaboration takes time. We've followed and created a repository for called for PLN's and celebrations.
A4: well, is a great start. Edcamps have helped me a ton. Detroit edcamp is here: https://t.co/MnezzRleWF MidMichigan is great too
A4: I find Twitter edchats 4-5 times per week to collaborate with different groups. It's helped guide me down a great path.
A4: Purposeful conversations with people outside of education- we need different perspectives!
A4 has connected w/ classrooms around the room through communities
A4 The world is flat. Time to get global. Like right now. How many of you are duplicating something like this 4 your Ss?
This needs to b a priority...made huge difference in Ontario turnaround
A4 Twitter, skype, Google Hangouts, and yep we still use the phone ;)
Jim Rohn says "we are the average of the five people we spend the most time with" Choose your friends wisely
A4 Do you have immigrants in your community? Invite them to share experiences from their home or culture.
A4: I participate in chats, visit edcamps in and out of my state, and share my experiences with my Ss.
A4 Skype for classroom connection to others outside the school. https://t.co/e5EGOsIWG4
Q4 How do you create global connectivity to collaborate outside of the "four walls" of your classroom / school?
A4: You start by being a part of !!!!!!!!
A4: Twitter chats have been my main go-to. I recommend them to teachers all the time.
A4 - Finding professionals that are willing to connect & share through skype, GHO, or Facetime
A4: TRYING to get peers connected with Twitter chats. Most are resistant still
. Reality is that there will NEVER be enough time for everything during day
Watched my T leadr facilitate work for our team...incredible skill! No way I could have done same-
Technology w a purpose....
https://t.co/aZrEXLs8eC
A4 - Finding professionals that are willing to connect & share through skype, GHO, or Facetime
A4: I also use to encourage S/T collaboration. Ss and I post Qs, share resources and cool math things.
culture of collaboration is key-fostered by interactive protocols, trust, bldg of relationships. A3
A4 Encourage TwitterPLN for prof connectivity and growth. Outside viewpoints break away limits to ideas https://t.co/e5EGOsIWG4
Q4 How do you create global connectivity to collaborate outside of the "four walls" of your classroom / school?
A4: Bring seniors in the classroom to work with students-especially the at-risk Ss. Lots of research supporting this.
A4 Struggled with this one for Ss. Tried Global Read Aloud. It was difficult to organize. District or county might be more doable
Thanks Megan for reminding me, we also use Edmodo
Q5 How has technology helped you communicate and collaborate with others?
. Getting the right people on board is best way to build .
Just crazy busy. Joined local School Committee. Also seems budget cuts are pushing another job search.
RT
Q5 How has technology helped you communicate and collaborate with others?
RT Q5 How has technology helped you communicate and collaborate with others?
A5: Twitter of course! And being a 1:1 school, Ss have access to communicate about learning from home.
:) Agreed..all my people have to be the right people :) so must invest in all! ALL means ALL-
we are stuck! Please help me give my students new technology. These kids are special to me please donate. https://t.co/muZYp9h2KR
A5: Twitter is a huge resource, but tools are also amazing for collab on all sorts of projects
A4 EdCamps, Twitter, blogs, Pinterest, Facebook, district PD, ISD PD
A5: Tech has helped build a PLN across the state. Helps in the classroom by allowing Ss to "talk" to each other in different ways.
A5 By using Google Apps to develop the first fully online course at a local university, to grow in my profession such as
A4 Create global connectivity outside school by chatting across regions, blogging, GHO, blabbing.
This is a very interesting perspective. Afterall, "water does seek its own level." https://t.co/0D9uFTUAjx
Jim Rohn says "we are the average of the five people we spend the most time with" Choose your friends wisely
This is so true. I've worked in schools where informal obs/peer pop-ins are the cultural norm--such a difference!
A5: Without tech I would not experience - building my PLN every week
I can communicate and collaborate with people not in my hallway!
A5 OPENED THE FLOOD GATES
A5 has added professionalism & confidence to student work, all student-led conferences daily https://t.co/Lyp7nYu6vY
RT
Q5 How has technology helped you communicate and collaborate with others?
A5 Starting to love what can do to suppport collaboration in the classroom and across a faculty https://t.co/OeCq1uj0OK
Q5 How has technology helped you communicate and collaborate with others?
How do schools get to a place where that IS the norm? Who starts it?
Google has changed the way we do business. We can work on the same project and analyze data from the same file at the same time.
Be well all. Gotta go. Thanks!!
A5: It is super important that we teach Ss how to use their technology for collaboration &the appropriate ways to use the tools
A5 It has torn down the walls of our building - there is no excuse any more for not connected. Tech has made communication 24/7
a5: since no one has said it yet...Twitter
And Voxer
I'm back! What did I miss?
Surround yourself with greatness!

A5: Google Docs has allowed me to collaborate with many people across the globe- what did I do before Google??
...closing time, one more call for...Oh I guess you weren't gone that long.
and sometimes right across the desk from me.
A5. It has opened the door to a new world like Columbus discovering America. Opportunities are unlimited to learn and grow
ABSOLUTELY! Model & show Ss the positive power tech can have on connecting & collaborating https://t.co/ez5ZgQ58IQ
A5: It is super important that we teach Ss how to use their technology for collaboration &the appropriate ways to use the tools
breaking down the silos to collaborate - YES!
A5: It was hard to actually collaborate on a document before OneDrive or Google Drive. Now you can truly work on something together
Admin suggested it, we loved the idea. Ts can go freely anyday, but have 1 week/quarter planned.
Does everyone participate? How did you get Ts on board?
Perfect timing . We are talking collaboration and learning outside our "four-walls" https://t.co/HXxk6Hy7Fm
"I want the kids to have a learning community where I am just a PART of it"
Collaboration for adults is easy...how do we get Ss from different schools, towns, states, & countries collaborating?
With technology to solve problems that they have questions about.
Q6 RESOURCE SHARE: Please share some resources that help us move away from competition & towards collaboration.
HERE'S the question - I created for my seniors to try to get them out into the world! https://t.co/aeJVRP5pPK
Collaboration for adults is easy...how do we get Ss from different schools, towns, states, & countries collaborating?
A5: Edmodo is used with Ts to collaborate in house. G-Classroom for T/S interaction. Twitter and other Soc. Media for T/T Colab.
Think about that one colleague you click with. Others will notice; maybe it becomes 3 or 4 (or more!)!
Those who invest in the next generation are the real heroes. Thanks for all you do.
A5: It's easier to see how the process of collaboration occurs rather than just the end product. How people build off of others
Start where they are :) invitation will build to - same w any change
RT Q6 RESOURCE SHARE: Please share some resources that help us move away from competition & towards collaboration.
Why is not trending when is? https://t.co/yUqXLsxaXt
Those who invest in the next generation are the real heroes. Thanks for all you do.
A6: Model vulnerability and trust - with peers as well as students.
Was a slow process, but by Jan. most were on board. It has slowed a bit recently, but still happens.
A6: Big fan of Padlet to assist others in seeing the work in real time. Nearpod is good for this too.
Right on! Keep doing what you do as well! TY
A6: Twitter chats, suite, discussion boards via TurnItIn or Nabble, blogging, SM (not a dirty word!)
Most, if not all participate. It's awesome because you get a chance to reflect on your own teaching.
That is awesome! Thanks for sharing
Great question indeed ! This is a perfect teacher/admin partnership opp. Maybe it is voluntary & that's ok
SShe has done that 10,000 times on my notifications column - time for pause
Technology has allowed us to cross regions, states, seas to connect and learn alongside each other. Amazing times! A5
A6 Student AND Teacher Collaboration Resource with BOOKS as the focus:

It is all voluntary, unless you're a new teacher.

just like w/Ss, "meet people where they are"
TodaysMeet https://t.co/WMBvIICK2K is a great, simple tool to help foster collaboration in any meeting or classroom.

Best thing to do? Suggest it. Get the ball rolling.

The doors to learning should be open at all times so Ts can share their best practices & learn from each other. A6
