Each Monday evening at 8PM EST, music teachers get together and share ideas about important topics within music education. It’s a great chance to interact directly with educators from all over the world and to get new tips and tricks to help you succeed in the classroom. The entire #musedchat discussion is organized and moderated by Joe Guarr.
A1: I had a history teacher in high school who had a big impact on me. I felt that he genuinely cared about me and made an effort to get to know me. #musedchat
A1: My saxophone professor, Dr. Jeffrey Heisler. Of course he has helped me become a better musician, but I will remember him for his kindness, honesty, credibility, and artistry. #musedchat
A1 #musedchat My HS choral director was influential on my behavior AND formation as a musician. No matter how many times I messed up she redirected and kept me focused without feeling like she was trying to 'mom' me. She's still teaching and I send my kids to her for festivals!
A1: My college trombone professor. She's incredibly caring yet demanding at the same time. Brought the very best out in her students, and made sure they were taken care of as well. #musedchat
Probably the most impactful teachers for me were my English and Art teachers in High School. My piano and voice instructors in college/grad school were the most significant due to their patience, support, and high expectations as I learned and developed my instruments. #musedchat
A1 One of my HS English Teachers. I loved her class. She somehow knew my mom was struggling to make ends meet & I remember her telling me about an AP test that she had quietly paid for me so I could earn a college class. <3 #musedchat
A1 I was also lucky to have a couple of math teachers in HS who were amazing at connecting with their students. Still in touch with one of them today. #musedchat
There's roughly a 50/50 split between music and non music teachers in these answers. Great to see that strong connections are happening all over. #musedchat
Hi friends! I’m Erin - a middle school band/chorus director from Gainesville, FL. I’ve been reading this chat for a few weeks now & I’m excited to finally join in! #musedchat
A1: most influential teacher was one of my university professors during grad school. She took the time to talk with me about balancing work, school, practice, & real life. I always think about her when I start to get stressed about “getting it all done.” #musedchat
A2 - Coop teacher I still visit. Mentor teacher at 1st MS was so helpful in getting through year 1 but he turned out to be a jerk in real life HA! #musedchat
A2 #musedchat Working in a private school, I had a coop teacher in my first round of undergrad who showed me how to account for my content area AND school culture. She passed a few years back, but I probably would have returned for advice if she were still around!
A2: Learned a lot about family/work balance from my co-op teacher. Usually reconnect with him during spring break over some tasty beverages and Easter gigs. #musedchat
A1- my elementary music teacher mentored me, my HS band director pushed me to be better, and my AP English teacher allowed me to be myself and be creative. #musedchat
I also still work with a colleague who encouraged me to finish my teaching license post-masters (performance) whose interactions with his students inspire me to be knowledgable and approachable while being a super cool teacher #musedchat
#musedchat A2. One of my college professors constantly reiterated the importance of giving specific positive feedback and that has impacted my teaching.
A2: Both of my cooperating teachers were fantastic. I learned so. much. from them. Mainly just learning how to sequence lessons and be effective in the music room. I wish I kept in contact with both of them more often. #musedchat
A2 I feel that my growth as a T has continually been impacted by my colleagues throughout the years. I have been able to work & collaborate w/so many great people, in music, art, & core subjects. But it is pretty cool to have my HS Band T clinic my Ss 20 yrs later. :) #musedchat
#musedchat A2. Finally, I had another college professor who was always in my corner! He picked me up when I was down, cheered me on, and always supported me! 😊
Had three good friends who became either accompanists for my elementary choirs or were mentors to me professionally. @dolenz5 , Mrs. Albright, and Mrs. Collins. Finding your "trusted tribe" can be an issue early in your career but mine were easily located! #musedchat
A2: I actually think one of my non-music colleagues has helped guide me quite a bit. She teaches PE and we’ve formed a great friendship as well as professional relationship. #musedchat
A2: My School, Culture, and Society TA from college. She helped me write my first paper to present at a conference and we still chat every few months. Just found out she got a job at Cal State, Fresno! #musedchat
A2: paired up with a teacher my first year teaching. She is still my major mentor, even though we do not teach the same subject. She has become so close that she is godmother to my children. #musedchat
A2: Also my cohorts who I went through school with and are now teachers. I learned so much from them and we all pushed each other to become better teachers #musedchat
Mouthpiece Mania, The Second Storm, Take Me Out to the Ballgame (thanks, @JPeske!), Heavy Metal, and Megiddo. Packed program but kids are excited! #musedchat
Q3: Mentors and co-ops have clearly made a lasting impression on us. What impression do you hope to leave on your own students after they leave your class? #musedchat
A1 Whoa I’m behind! My HS history teacher - taught us to think for ourselves, question sources, and let us do projects using our strengths - ie he let me make a song for one of our projects... cutting edge for 80s ed #musedchat
A3 I hope my Ss take away how collaborative music can be and how it connects them to other people who are different or very much the same. I want them to discover, create, consume, and be a rounded part of the music!! <3 #musedchat
A3) An absolute love for music and a strong belief in their own value as creative beings...That through perseverance and cooperative experiences, our Ss understand and become who they were truly created to be...#ktoy2018#musedchat
A2: HS English teacher for helping understand my creative side, my two bass profs for not accepting my excuses, and my mom, the best damn educator I’ve ever met. #musedchat
A3: I hope that my students are able to grow up and not be afraid to dance at weddings and sing to babies (or at church, or karaoke or wherever!) I hope I’ve given them a safe place to start the “30 year plan” #musedchat#firststepsinmusic
A3 My hope for my Ss is that they can have music in their life for the rest of their lives; that they know they can create, improvise on their own... I’ve been watching my Gr 5s do this for the past few weeks... love it! #musedchat
A3:As others have said, for them to be kind members of society who think about others before themselves. Also for them to feel a little more familiar and comfortable with their creative side.#musedchat
A2- honestly my mom has done more to shape me as an educator. She taught 2nd grade, writing, reading, and gifted, but she taught me more than almost anyone else. #musedchat
I want my students to know I love them like my own kids, that they can enjoy music to some level as an adult, and that they understand how much collaboration is involved in everything we do! #musedchat
Been actively engaged in #musedchat with fellow musicians...Yeah, I think Twitter might be my "new thing!" So happy to be able to participate with you!
