Welcome to tonight’s chat!
I’m Keshia Seitz, Associate Director of eLearning
Hi all! I'm using our Participate Learning Chat home page for the first time. Pushing myself to try something new.
and I'm Diana Gill, Instructional Technology Coach at
Tonight’s topic: What does “thoughtful” tech integration actually mean?
Tonight's topic:What does "thoughtful" tech integration mean? How can SAMR, TPACK, 4Cs etc. support what we do? Are they equal?
Let's start out by introducing ourselves! Tell us who you are and where you're from!
Hello friends! I'l l be in and out tonight, but wanted to jump in to say hi! Amy, principal from Angola!
Tonight the questions will come to you in a new (to us) form- let us know what you think!

Hi, Susan!! Glad you could join us tonight!
Hello! Chris Tucker here, assistant principal at Western Boone HS.
Thanks for joining us, and
Welcome Tom! I'm excited to hear your ideas and thoughts on tonight's topic!
Good evening, Library MS from Indy, going through basketball withdrawal.
We won't be retweeting the moderators' questions tonight. They will be very visible. Keshia and Diana will alternate.
Question 1 is on its way! Be on the lookout for our Q's in the format of pictures tonight!
Awesome! Love those Chrome Extensions!
R1 Integrate technology in a useful way, not just for technology sake. Use technology to improve something you already do.
Chris from Bloomington, IN checking into & a bit late due to uncooperative children.
Welcome Susie! Happy to see you in tonight's chat. I've been in a sad, depressed state since my Hoosiers lost. UGH!
R1: Making sure you're still focusing on task over tool. Tech should improve task.
R1) Thinking about what Ss need to learn and how, then choosing technology to fit those goals. Not making learning fit tech.
R1: there is a vision for what will be accomplished through the integration; you have goals.
R1: Not just using an app/website & calling it good. The tech has to enhance Ss learning through relevent, engaging prjct design.
R1-As says, "Pedagogy trumps technology". Tech should enhance our practices, be purposeful, Student-centered
Steve from Hammond Gavit. Chromebook carts/BYOD getting a workout at these days. Looking forward to chat.
Oh my goodness. I completely understand. Mine are still awake. :(
Exactly, -student learning has to be at the center of it all (hm...does Participate add in reply? Testing...)
R1 Being sure the instruction is improved for the Ss, not just the same stuff, different tool
Absolutely! I always ask T's - What do you want your S's to learn? and...then I can share ways for tech to help!
YES!!! So many times we use tech for the sake of tech. Yes, it is engaging, but the focus must be on the learning!
Start with the instructional goal
and we engage with the learning, not the tech!
R2 I look at goals for my lesson/unit and see if there is a new way to enhance lesson, i search a lot to see what others have done
Glad you are with us tonight! I'd love to hear your perspective and ideas on tonight's topic!
R2-Ask: What do we want Ss to know & be able to do? What are the different ways they can demonstrate that understanding?
PBL-start with end in mind, craft driving question, scaffold what students may need, look for tech to help meet needs.
R2) Struggle w/ this b/c many awesome things out there I want to try but hard to find time. Less variety but lrng goals stressed.
This reminds me of backwards mapping..you have to focused on what should be learned/achieved before designing a lesson.
do you find giving Ss options of tech tools helps with this? One goal, lots of ways to get there?
R2 PBL-start with end in mind, craft driving quesion, scaffold what Ss may need to knoe, seek tech to help answer their N2Ks.
A2 I know it sounds cliche but you need to start at the beginning with a goal for the learning
R2 Learning goals clearly, but really reevaluate what you've always done; reconstruction may surprise you on what's essential
Yes. I think this is a great way to think about tech int. What is the learning goal in this? How can tech enhance it?
It can be overwhelming! But, sometimes less is more too. More focused, less shiny, cool stuff all the time.
Trying to do this (teach online). Have Padlet wall w/ lots of creation tools & enc Ss to try but stick w/ Gdocs.
R2: Start by substituting technology for "normal" everyday tasks/activities & then work toward redefining education
Absolutely, it may fail if there's not been an open culture, but I always advocate for allowing choice https://t.co/jAd1sBg2bT
do you find giving Ss options of tech tools helps with this? One goal, lots of ways to get there?
Matthew from BNL, Asst Principal- jumping in late!
Deb Blaz checking in late...free movie, Brooklyn & couldn't resist...
Come on in! The party's just getting started. We're on Q3. Tonight's Q's are in picture form!
R3: We generally use SAMR in my district...so far :)
Prob 4 sim reasons as why Ts struggle - do Ss have time to figure out new tools when easier to use what they know?
Welcome, Deb! Never too late to join! We're on Q3. Tonight's Q's are in the form of pictures!
A3 SAMR right now. It was the easiest to introduce.
R3 We use SAMR in our district
Sherry SCSD1 Checking in late.
jumping in late director of tech integration indy. We just started introducing samr to our teachers this year.
R3: I've always used SAMR at my schools
I am a future teacher and I have been focusing on SAMR, thanks to
R2 personally prefer not to give too many tech choices. Introduce 1 or2, get comfy, then 1 or 2 more, THEN let Ss choose
R3: A group @ my school just created a framework centered around 3R’s, hoping a as we dig in, the tech int. will come as needed.
R3: I personally like TPCK because it incorporates the knowledge aspect and includes content and pedagogy into learning w/ tech.
also think Ts can reflect on what we are asking Ss to do. How can we personalize the learning so they want to explore?
Welcome and you got here just as we hit the acronoyms! Now it's teacher talk time!
Welcome, Megan! What is appealing about SAMR to your district?
1 year in, time to look at it again with a more critical eye!
We are introducing SAMR! And the key for me to reminder is it starts with S & we are learning together as we move to 1:1 next year
R2 Start small. But use a framework to keep your focus on progressing toward deeper integration.
I agree! My T's seem to like the comparison/analogy with Blooms. Is that something that your T's express?
Started 1:1 last year and SMAR is a topic we are still working on.
I'm curious about talking about several with my Ts- and letting them make it all speak to them
I'm curious about talking about several with my Ts- and letting them make it all speak to them
it was the easiest for our prin. to relate to (accountability). We created levels & goals for teachers to achieve
I try not to compare Blooms and SAMR. I think they are different and need to be treated as such
Loving all the staggered arrivals! It's never too late to jump in!
OMG. is AMAZING! Learn all you can from her. She inspired me to embrace eLearning.
Jason! I'm glad you could join us tonight!!!
This is important, but necessary to provide common skills/etiquette for Ss to use with many tools https://t.co/UwKGqOJVoi
do you find giving Ss options of tech tools helps with this? One goal, lots of ways to get there?
That's interesting. Why do you feel they are so different?
R4 When you're evaluating a framework for adoption, I think the first question is what purpose do we need this to fill? 2Bcont...
we look at samr not as a ladder but set out own levels using x amount of each letter which helped teachers see that uses vary
many levels to blooms--fewer with SAMR. Muddy to combine the levels of Blooms to make them work with SAMR
Have any of you found a really great way to introduce to teachers?
Awesome , I was just getting to that. Don't select a model that'll freak folks out-your goal = provide focus not fear
R4: I often hear SAMR misinterpreted. I've seen others view it as a ceiling. The ladder never ends!
A4: the student success and growth can help measure the success of the framework
R4: SAMR is language for dialogue. I hate to see people use it like a roadmap.
there us a chart that combines samr and blooms
we found a great coffee example that helped teachers understand.
yeah. I actually have it in my office. Just still not sold on it
. it's important not confuse critical thinking with application. Skills and tools are not the same
Yeah, that's how it was introduced to me when I first learned about SAMR
R4 important to focus on standards first, then look at tech for a good fit to help reach mastery, not use tech because cool.
Treat it like anything else, get a few Ts on board and then let them fuel the fire.
They both have their place
First off you have to support Ts where they are in their level of integration.
R5 It's important to help Ts navigate and feel comfortable, at their level. Let them know it's a tool not a replacement.
Well Dr. Bailey when you show up, you come in force! SAMR is not a roadmap! Can some please sketchnote this?
R5: Ts often self-evaluate using SAMR in convos. Use it as an opportunity to reinforce what SAMR discusses
There is a Summer of eLearning theme that this fits nicely in...
that's a valuable takeaway!
A5 It is important to celebrate the successes so they see the need to continue to work through it
Hello, ! Chantell from Angola checking in late!
R5: At the risk of sounding cliche, model!! Ts want to see iy in action not hear about it at a meeting
Agreed. And to understand that they may have some things that fail and that's ok
We launched SAMR w large group PD. Follow up with informal supports and making space for T collaboration.
An important reminder! How do we support Ts who have Ss ready for higher levels of integration? https://t.co/g8mPVzTdTn
First off you have to support Ts where they are in their level of integration.
A5: It's brand new to 95% of my Ts. To reinforce it, Ts must use it when requesting badges for PGPs.
we are just starting to look at badges would love to talk more about what you do outside of this chat
R5: Led 2 Tech Tuesdays last yr. Asked Ts to bring lesson plans, then we brainstormed ways to "level up" together
I like this. Sometimes we all need other people to bounce ideas off and to get ideas from.
Interesting , do Ts submit evidence to claim badge? Be curious to learn more
we did similar as an inservice all teachers brought a lesson and discussed as departments
Definitely! I've created quite a few this year so I'd be willing to answer any questions.
I am passionate about SAMR. Some of Indiana's best 1:1's lean on it for continuous improvement.
Yes, each badge has a set of requirements that the Ts submit evidence for to earn the badge.
It was great collaboration! Wish we had time for it more often...some Ts make time, but having it scheduled helps!
Lots of SAMR resources here as my thinking around it continues to evolve-by far my fav work https://t.co/SnUAiEzSGY
SAMR + 4Cs is a powerful combo for me
R6 Tech allows expression previously not conceivable; a shy student speaks up; the nonartist creates; the off tune can sing
R7: yes principals need to hold teachers accountable or some will never change.
R7: We have- loosely, but we have.
R7) As T, I do agree that it should be an area of evaluation. Ss need to know how to use tech productively for C&C readiness.
Oooh, this would be cool for dept. PLC time - early adopters model, group tunes up lesson plans. https://t.co/ATcEmNylIL
R5: Led 2 Tech Tuesdays last yr. Asked Ts to bring lesson plans, then we brainstormed ways to "level up" together
I do believe it should remain loose too. for now
R7 That's a tough one. Some do a great job without tech, but at the same time Ss need tech integ to prepare for future
A7: For part of eval, yes. Otherwise some Ts are not preparing students for 21st Century life after school.
R6 As Ts dive deeper into SAMR, teaching looks more like PBL with authentic tasks and audiences
R7 this is not a black & white question-like earning badges...what is being evaluated, who is involved...and levels of PD/support
R7: From a student stand point, I think teachers should be required to use technology to it's fullest potential
R7: Rise does mention integrating tech, but not sure if it should be a focus for evals. since the focus should be good instruction
I would love something like this.
R7 Yes, if tech is important for your school/district, it should be 1 piece of the hiring and eval processes
love it! That's the direction we are headed. Giving them some motivation to grow/learn in ways that make sense.
R7: Worth a discussion on what is "appropriate integration" of tech. I'm biased (obvi) but not opposed to my eval incl. tech use.
Ah, NOW hiring using tech integration as a factor is A OK in my book!
R7: agree! Definitely not a focus but I believe that in order to be a good teacher today you have to use tech.
If for nothing else other than to relate to the students and prepare them for the future all though I think it does so much more.
R7: When interviewing new teachers, I make sure to ask about tech. integration since I find it important for student success
I agree, & from this parents' perspective, my student deserves a teacher willing to walk the "lifelong learner" talk
and when hiring admin, too!
R7 but there's tech & there's Tech. Just having Ss read online instead of hard copy, type instead of use pencil -real integration?
We want a more tech-rich enviro. Handful of Ts have been advance scouts, now they're trying to pave the way for more.
A fair and reasonable question. Can we assume in that "tech" is about meaningful integration? https://t.co/dVVAlVGU2L
R7 but there's tech & there's Tech. Just having Ss read online instead of hard copy, type instead of use pencil -real integration?
Hopefully, I will be "that teacher" in just a few years! https://t.co/RvticNt788
I agree, & from this parents' perspective, my student deserves a teacher willing to walk the "lifelong learner" talk
Good point & that should be part of expectations from outset - defining what tech integration is.
Definitely. admin/leaders have to use the tech to show they're willing to learn and take the risks as well.
Wrap-Up: If you were to create your own tech integration framework, what would the most important element be?
I agree. Admin/leaders must model the use of tech!
That's the end goal. It may start out with substitution, but it should progress.
advice for getting them to do that? Examples of how?
just like a class lesson, today's interview shouldnt look like my grandma's would have
is the best modeling admin I know!
Wrap-Up: My main goal would be to use technology in a way that stops ALL regurgitation & allows REAL learning to happen
If you were to create your own tech integration framework, what would the most important element be? I think the WU was lost!
First of all, TY to our moderators for a thoughtful conversation! Glad everyone made it tonight. My framework would include GROWTH
WU Mindset that tech is an integral element of solid pedagogy today. Focus on its relationship to S outcomes, not the shiny tools
As always, this hour went too fast! thanks for a great chat tonight!
Thanks, everyone! You rock!
thanks for a great chat! Have a great week everyone!
Great hour of & ! My brain is full & my teaching spirit is refreshed as always. Have a great week everyone & thanks!
