Our chat will focus on the idea that we can lead and make positive change from any position in our school systems. Leadership is not about a title, it is a way of thinking and acting.

Super excited to check in with #leadlap this morning for a bit.
Welcome to #LeadLAP!!! We are Learning to Lead today!!! All questions developed by our amazing group of aspiring leaders. Please introduce yourself and let’s get this party started!! #viterbo636
Curt Slater Proud Principal of the @Jrwildcatsroar in MN! We just finished a full week of state testing but we also enjoyed a full week of Art in our school! Love watching our students use their creative side of their brain! State testing doesn’t measure that! #LeadLAP
My name is Sarah Olson, choir teacher in Eau Claire Wisconsin. YES. I just ate the most amazing cheese curd. Looking forward to chatting with you all this m orning. #leadlap#viterbo636
Hey everyone! I'm Taylor, I teach 7th grade SS in Eau Claire, WI and am an aspiring building principal. Can't wait to get a variety of opinions on leadership. #leadlap#viterbo636
"A title doesn't automatically annoint one as a leader. Leadership is comprised of a dynamic mix of behaviors, mindset & skills which are used to move people where a leader wants them to be for betterment of the org" @e_sheninger Leadership pg https://t.co/jPnn39hV6N#LeadLAP
A1: Model that very behavior. I know that the culture and climate of a school is exactly how the adults treat each other. Kids are drawn to adults who care about each other and are having fun! #LeadLAP
A1: I think a good exercise we've done is have people share things about themselves. The more people know about each other, they care more and build a team. #LeadLAP
A1: What a great question. Creating an environment of respect and rapport, building community is not easy, especially on the administrative level, but respecting each other's opinions is a great start. #LeadLAP
A1: Teachers will talk with each other when it is a shared goal and there is mutual respect. If those two are lacking than "collaboration" is forced and lacks impact. #LeadLap
A1) I think it's ok to talk about the kind of culture you expect. You can't "mandate" a positive culture, but if you set the stage people have a better sense of what's considered positive. #LeadLAP
A1 you have to be proactive creating relationships with people. Start by asking them about their day and when they bring someone else up ask if they talked with them about it. #LeadLAP
It begins with the leader and what they model…which then has a tendency to cascade across the organization, be that for the positive or negative. Creating environments of trust and psychological safety require constant attention and intentionality. #leadlap#viterbo636
A1: Create a culture of praise and encouragement by modeling the behavior we want at all times with each othe, our students, and all stakeholders. We mimic what we see modeled. #LeadLap
A1- As a leader, we need to model this in all interactions. Talking about people is small minded, while talking with people brings everyone closer together. #LeadLAP
A1: Constant modeling of trying to say & do the right things. Self-reflection: I’m constantly asking myself if I’m part of the problem or solution. #viterbo636#LeadLAP
A1: love this - it ain't easy! Start simple - vertical groupings for culture PD, break bread together regularly, have fun events that bring everyone together like making an escape room or having staff play games for the building #LeadLAP
A1: Modeling and creating opportunities is key. Also giving opportunities to get to know each other on a personal level is important. It helps personalize us all. #LeadLAP
A1 we’ve been reenergizing focus on professional learning process thru systemwide focus on conditions that create collective efficacy @Jenni_Donohoo work #leadlap
A1: I think the way to keep people from talking about each other is transparency starting from the top down. Most of the "gossip" coming from an organization originates from the not knowing rather than disagreeing. Transparency leads to great discussion #LeadLAP#viterbo636
A1 Creating a culture where people talk WITH each other vs ABOUT each other begins with genuine caring, LISTENING, knowing people's stories/situations, and creating an environment where people are working in their strength zones. #LeadLAP
A1: Model honesty. Your building should have a "safe space" feel. A place where it is safe to throw the "skunks" on the table and air them out. #LeadLAP
You are so correct the culture of the school is based on how people treat each other. The relationships of the adults sets the tone for the school. #umedtech#edl577um#leadlap
A1: set the example every day. Empathy should be actively practiced. Keep focus on common ground, common goals, all should understand theirs and others piecemeal contribution to the mission.
Bottom line though: give chances for people to genuinely like each other
#LeadLAP
A1: Keep the main thing the main thing. As leaders we must model focus our conversations through the lens of Mission and vision. Love your people #LeadLAP
A1: Building relationships as a staff needs to be intentional. As leaders we need to create opportunities to share, laugh together and celebrate #LeadLAP
A1: I agree with everything that is being said, and I would add be courageous to respectfully call people out when necessary. What we permit as leaders, we promote. #LeadLAP#viterbo636
A1: Absolutely model the behavior you wish to see. Build others up and smile everyday. Stay positive and support others personally and professionally by listening, encouraging, and inspiring all to be the best they can be. #LeadLAP
I created a positive behaviour form for any staff to easily ‘report’ the good stuff. All the reports end up in a sheet. It also pushes an email to me about using autocrat that I can forward to the kid/parents. #Leadlap
A1: I found the best way to develop this rapport is to 1: Not join the conversation but provide solutions and 2: Go to the source and engage in healthy conversations 👍#viterbo636#LeadLAP
A1: Creating a culture where we talk WITH each other revolves around building those relationships. Small steps that build trust, being more open and vulnerable (a little bit at a time - take baby steps), & hanging out away from school - BBQs, happy hour, karaoke, etc. #leadlap
A1: Be willing to have courageous conversations with your school community with the intention to build trust and build the culture that's best for students. #LeadLAP#viterbo636
a1 I'm thinking talking "about" others stems from a sensed need for self-protection. Leaders need to be intentional in getting followers to trust & appreciate each other.. #Leadlap
A1: Teachers will talk with each other when it is a shared goal and there is mutual respect. If those two are lacking then "collaboration" is forced and lacks impact. #LeadLap
A1: Having norms or expectations in place like #Top20Training can help. When you're tempted or hear someone talking about someone you can say/think "that's below the line" You already have a response in place to help shut down that kind of thinking/talk #LeadLAP
A1 Begins with being purposeful about assembling a team of Ts who are committed to the shared goals of the school. These professionals understand the importance of supporting each other to reach goals & won't engage in divisive dialogue #LeadLAP
A1: We have to model that both personally & professionally. We do a lot of work through our PLC process, and while we're not perfect, it's improving. I talk a lot about reciprocal accountability, because we have to be accountable/hold each other accountable. #LeadLAP#viterbo636
A1: Change the conversation. Redirect the focus. Learning about each other - making connections. So when the talk about each other is happening, it is about positive things. #LeadLAP
A1: creating a strong culture involves open communication, having open door (literally and figuratively), being willing to listen and taking time before responding. #leadlap
A1: Talking with each other comes from having an open culture, but it also comes from purposeful master schedules and PD plans that allow educators time and space to collaborate. When we have time to get together and discuss issues, we can make magic! #leadLAP#viterbo636#edchat
A1: Two things... 1 is to ensure that you never leave an elephant in the room and 2 is knowing when and where you need some form of protocol like critical friends training that @tvansoelen and others can provide. #LEADLAP
A1: It comes down to Connection & Communication.
To build that culture you need to:
1. Establish Common Ground
2. Use More Than Words
3. Stop Talking & Listen
4. Live What You Say
5. Ask Questions & Go Deeper #LeadLAP#Viterbo636
This is important. And I think beginning with relationships (as you say relationships first, relationships always) makes those tough conversations easier! #LeadLAP
A1: It's critical to create a culture where different approaches and strategies to instruction are valued and respected. Ensuring teachers not only see other teach, but also debrief - rationale for instructional strategy, etc.. about those experiences is helpful.
#leadlap
A1: "Check oursleves before we wreck ourselves" Set an example, too many educators are already on self made islands and feel the need to bring others to their island and bash those they don't want. Keeping channels open for all sorts of communication is a must. #LeadLAP
A1: Treating each other with respect. Talking and collaborating in a way that models the same behavior for our students. Allowing all voices to be heard. Respecting differences and perspectives. We are all in this together. #leadlap
A1: Model this by keeping our words with the appropriate parties and be mindful of having the tough conversations with the right people. Those it involves. Redirect conversations that go that direction. This is a lot harder than it seems sometimes. #LEADLAP#viterbo636
Yes. Those who observe Ts would be wise to maintain specific lists of what they do well, identify niches. There is something good we can say about every T but often T's don't know what that is #LeadLAP
Like the listening, encouraging, and inspiring components here, Diane. A team that is committed to achieving success constantly galvanizes collaborative efforts to get better each day #LeadLAP
A1: Tao into your courage, tenacity, and make this happen. Lots of work because tovyave to establish a ton of interactive opportunities to really nail this team element #LeadLAP
A1 we have to take the time to focus on the positive things that are happening everyday. The negative noise wants to trump everything. We have to listen but we don’t need to dwell on the negative noise. #LeadLAP
A1: Working WITH each other starts with you and how you perceive each member of your team. Do you value each of them? Encourage their contributions? Expect greatness? #LeadLAP
A1: High integrity every day. Do not talk poorly of others with your staff. Period. Build them up and be intentional about being authentic. #leadlap#viterbo636
A1: I think it’s okay to talk about one another when it’s because we are positively inspired. We need to tell our truth and share one another’s successes to fully appreciate what we have! #LeadLAP
A1 I think it starts with a culture of trust. Regardless of our roles when we have proven to be approachable, then meaningful conversations can happen. #LeadLAP
A1: As the leader - It’s not about you. It’s about those you serve. If you truly want to connect with your school community, you must put them first. You have to change your focus from inward to outward, off of yourself and onto others. #leadlap#viterbo636
A1: We’ve got to model what we expect. The way we talk about ppl, even behind closed doors, affects our school by either creating a pos climate or one of negativity. So celebrating people’s strengths & assuming pos intentions is so important 🙌🏼😊! #leadLAP
A2: Offer up opportunities to everyone. Those who are comfortable at the time will step forward. Also, provide opportunities with different things, as not everyone will have the same interests. Sometimes people need a nudge. #LeadLAP
A1 principals who flip faculty meetings to focus on professional learning work and level the playing field through leadership by teachers change the parking lot and lounge convos #LeadLAP@CaleElementary@deninejones is one of examples of this
A1: Part 2 - Leaders also need to create to time staff to get to know each other on a personal level. Learning about others interests, experiences, passions, etc... will support positive relationships.
#leadlap
3 WAYS- get to know your people, let people get to know you, provide ways for your people to know each other Words of Wisdom from the great @casas_jimmy#LeadLAP
A1: those with power need to create a culture that allows and engages in conflict instead of avoiding it. We need to appreciate when someone comes to us with honesty #Leadlap
A2: Don't leave people out of the process. Each person can find leadership in his/her own way. In fact, it's better if a school has a wide variety of leaders and leadership styles. Different styles find different kids. #LeadLAP
@Joe_Sanfelippo#Leadlap A1: A good leader should always listen & acknowledge what other say: I challenged myself to read all the tweets from Alaskan Educators for a year... Learned so much from listening! https://t.co/R0YtUNOYr3
For admins, I'm thinking that might be easier said than done bc if anything goes wrong...and they often have families to support. Rejection from one district will make it difficult to find another admin job, even in a big city. #LeadLAP
Welcome to #LeadLAP!!! We are Learning to Lead today!!! All questions developed by our amazing group of aspiring leaders. Please introduce yourself and let’s get this party started!! #viterbo636
A2: I invited any staff member who wanted to take on building leadership to meet so we could find areas of interest and strength for them to explore. All dept members should be part of the decision making process. #LeadLAP
A2. See a need, fill a need. Find opportunities for each staff member to excel in something they are passionate about and recognize their contributions to the school in specific and intentional ways. #LEADlap
A2: work to have everyone have the opportunities and allow leaders to grow organically. The pitfall is when ‘favorites’ are developed and provided opps others aren’t #viterbo636#leadlap
Speaking from an inexperienced perspective, many times a group of leaders will form on its own. Personalities emerge from the community who are willing to lead and do so without any nudging. Inclusion of everyone begins with respect, acknowledging every idea. #LeadLAP
I leave me door open so when gen ed T's walk by they can see and hear what we are doing in small group, drop in for a few seconds to minutes and ask questions. I love questions during group that my Ss can answer. #leadlap
A2: Include people in leadership groups based on their strengths. Giving everyone a voice makes them feel needed. This will create a culture of collaboration and unity. #umedtech#edl577um#leadlap
A1: Model the behavior you would like to see. Set up opportunities for people to get to know each other better and build an authentic community feeling. #LeadLAP#VIterbo636
A2: To build teacher leadership we often identify Ts who are showing an overt willingness and enthusiasm toward leadership, but we need to also look deeper at others who skills and talents need to be developed. Bring them along too. We can’t have enough good leaders. #LeadLap
A2: Depends on your definition of leadership. Do you see only one team as being able to lead? There is so much needed to make a school run beautifully. Leadership opportunities are everywhere. Match people's talents/passions with the right leadership role. #LeadLAP#viterbo636
A2: Let’s invite all to the table! We all bring something different. At the same time, reminding everyone to celebrate our own strengths & potential. We are all pieces of the whole, differences are good! #LeadLAP
A2: Ask different groups of people to lead different projects. Everyone who wants the opportunity to lead should be given the chance in some capacity. #leadLAP#viterbo636
A2: Be transparent with leadership opportunities and don't be exclusive. Have personal conversations with people welcoming them to get involved. #leadlap#viterbo636
a2 It might be a good idea to survey the pool about what their leadership aspirations are. The rock star may not be the one growing the fastest. #LeadLAP
Hi everyone! I am a preservice teacher from Trinity Christian College, I am a double major in elementary and special education! Glad to be here! #LeadLAP#troll209
A2: Constant conversations, especially 1-on-1 ones. Being Honest, Open, Transparent! Bldg. off of people’s strengths! Bldg capacity & realizing everyone has something to give the group! #LeadLAP#viterbo636
A2: Those who have traditionally been involved as leaders need to be more ok with feeling left out of the process of bringing other leaders along. That’s true #resilience#Leadlap
A2: There is always more room for great leaders! Being a now leader, and being the best you can be for your students doesn't mean you're a part of a "group" you're a part of being AWESOME!!! #LeadLAP#viterbo636
A2: Effectively communicate with others what your vision/goals are and keep on open invitation to those that want to help or share that common vision. #LeadLAP
A2: We include leaders in the process the same way we would include our students - ASK ALL OF THEM. We find out how they are "wired" - some don't mind talking in front of others while some need conversations 1-on-1 - and include them in the convo on THEIR level. #leadlap
A2 - We need to create a culture of checking our titles at the door. Communicating and setting expectations and talking to people about their roles brings more people into the proceeds. Eveyone needs a role in this work and they need to know where they stand. #LeadLAP
A2 Developing leaders means that we are purposeful in noting the leadership potential in ALL members of our team. This requires investing in 1:1, supportive, professional relationships that provide the leadership push. This allows all of be a part of growing together #LeadLAP
A2: Providing opportunities for leadership- Professional development, training, leading groups, partnering with another person to lead w/ them. Asking for volunteers, asking others who would be a good person to lead something #LeadLAP#viterbo636
A1: I always encourage working as a team and respecting each other. At the same time I tell my staff we are a second family and need to take care of each other and respect one another. Coffee hasn’t kicked in. #leadlap
A2 as @GrantLichtman says every staff member’s voice matters in the strategic design and action process - everyone needs to make sense together of why change, invest in “North Star” work, and participate in the feedback loop #LeadLAP
A2: Give everyone a chance to lead, and seek out those who don't always volunteer or take risks first. Give different kinds of ways to lead and make decisions together as much as possible. Keep the door open for everyone. #LeadLAP
A1: Model, create regular opportunities for staff to talk with each other, build family atmosphere, and work on relationships, relationships, relationships.
#LeadLAP
A2: hmm...I'm not sure - I want my focus to be on having every staff member feel they are being developed in a personal way - I have a ways to go still. Next year it will be "what's your 7?" Where they pick which framework piece they will be distinguished on! #LeadLAP
A1 Creating a culture where people talk WITH each other vs ABOUT each other begins with genuine caring, LISTENING, knowing people's stories/situations, and creating an environment where people are working in their strength zones. #LeadLAP
A2: Relationships - if you know your staff and what they are passionate about, you can tap people on the shoulder to assist in areas you know they'd be confident leading in. If the culture is a positive one, people don't feel left out or jealous. #LeadLAP
A2: Developing leaders is the key to effective and collective leadership. Outside of the core "leadership team", develop ways in which leadership opportunities exist for everyone. Offer opportunities to lead informally, and communicate all staff are leaders. #LEADLAP
A2:Set the expectation that everyone will lead. Develop the capacity of everyone to do so. Communicate listen then communicate some more and listen repeat and the rest will take care of itself #LeadLAP
Effective leaders have high levels of EQ, are strong listeners & are self-directed learners who look for ways to remove the barriers that impact learning! They model what they hope to see in others & give others the space to take risks. #LeadLAP
A1.2: Talking WITH each other requires us to respect, appreciate, and listen to one another. Talking ABOUT each other requires the exact opposite. #LEADlap#viterbo636
A2: 2 - You will still have those that see it as a competition, provide little to no support cause it wasn't their idea, then find every little detail that isn't perfect. This drives me nuts! Makes Q1: that much more important! #LeadLAP
A2: Share the wealth of opportunities and seek out places for ALL teachers and staff. Don’t necessarily make it mandatory, but make sure everyone knows there is a place for their talents to shine to make a different for the school and our students. #LeadLap
A2: Part of a good leader building capacity in a school is making sure that opportunities for leadership are spread around so all have access to all of the opportunities. We're starting to build task forces to work on processes as part of this. #LeadLAP#viterbo636
A2: Create a culture where when one of us grows, we all grow. It is a team, where we are looking for everyone to find their strengths and grow to benefit the entire group. #leadlap#viterbo636
A2: Making sure everyone knows their "why". Without that people do not feel that they are or can contribute. Help them define their strengths and help them build capacity in their weaknesses. #LeadLAP
We start every PD with some sort of community building activity. It has been a great way to bring us together, have some fun and kind of shake some sillies after a long day before starting PD. #leadlap
A2: Find ways for everyone to contribute. Some will want to lead by being out front. Some may lead behind the scenes, supporting those out front. Everyone can feel valued, everyone can see where they fit in to the puzzle. #viterbo636#LeadLAP
(art from TX) A2 - Educate all that they are leaders. We don't always realize it. But if we are intentional and come up with some simple goals, we can do great things in a short time. Lead on purpose, with purpose. #leadlap
A2: Everyone has strengths. We need to find them and create opportunities for all staff to lead (and support them to do this in a way that feels safe..not everyone wants to stand in front of the group) #LeadLAP
Personalized learning should be a part of leadership, like creativity, we all have leadership capacity, but it often lies in a variety of areas. Finding ways to expand upon that capacity is not always vertical, sometimes opportunities to expand are horizontal #leadlap#virerbo636
A2: Create an environment where people better themselves. Leaders will emerge and likely in places where you didn’t realize that you needed more leadership. #LEADLAP
Sometimes it ALSO means stepping aside and letting those who haven’t led before the opportunity to do so. If people step out but opportunities are given to those who always receive it, people will be less likely to step out in the future #LeadLAP
A2: You invite every one to the solution table. You have to engage and value each solution being proposed and then prioritize as a team what is the best course if action. Never criticize. #LeadLAP
Integral component identified by @TonySinais - Leaders have a responsibility to connect all activities back to the established vision. This focuses, and often re-focuses, collaborative efforts to build momentum to achieve goals #LeadLAP
A2: Start small and grow. "Start those snowballs" as @burgessdave would say! If someone feels on the outside, encourage them to join the movement! #LeadLAP
A2 in my experience Ts just want a voice-building a culture with opportunities for staff to be heard goes a long way just as it does with our Ss #LeadLAP
A1: In some schools, this is easier to do-maybe you have a lot of kind and trusting group of ppl. Other schools trust has to be built, which means serious team-building exercises. Offering sincere praise and modeling respect. #LeadLAP
A2: I believe the greatest legacy a leader can leave is having developed other leaders. Develop them as widely and as deeply as you can. #leadlap#viterbo636
A2: Open up opportunities to all and allow individuals to shine in a variety of ways. But, be intentional to find positive in all. Those notes of encouragement can help build confidence for someone to feel more comfortable sharing his or her voice. #leadlap
A2 provide opportunities for all to lead and be successful. Again a culture of WE goes a long way. If we are collaborating and partnering with each other it is much easier for everyone to feel as though they are a leader #Leadlap
A2: Another thought. Not everyone has to lead. There is something to be said for also having people who are good followers, Who believe in what you are doing and want to help in their own way. #LeadLAP
A2: Encourage others to take risks and do so yourself! Risk-taking requires leadership and sharing the success (or lack thereof!) shows leadership as well. Shared leadership is not only a good thing but necessary for sustained improvement! #LeadLAP
A1 Genuinely connect with each staff in order to be able to offer opportunities to lead - however big or small - that are responsive to their strengths and passions. #viterbo636#LeadLAP
A2: Engaging in capacity building is the most powerful theory of action I have ever used. Through it I have found people willing to lead who ever knew they had it in them to do so #LeadLAP
A2: With as much work as there is in schools, there are plenty of things to delegate. The hard part is providing the training or knowing the strength of Ts. #LeadLAP
A1. We as leaders can discuss that we need to work with each other in our discussions no matter if they are a positive or negative topic. Talking with each other solves many more problems than talking about each other. #LeadLAP#troll209
A2: If you want to leave a legacy, invest in people & encourage those you develop to pass on everything they learn from you to others who will do the same. People are what matter in this world—not money or fame or organizations or institutions. Only people. #leadlap#viterbo636
A2: Schools have a variety of areas in which leadership - both formal and informal - is needed. Make these leadership areas visible and let staff know about them. Everyone has strengths. The strongest teams are usually composed of staff possessing different strengths. #leadlap
A2: By finding ways to leverage all voices. Start with a problem solving summit with the design process and see which leaders naturally emerge. #LeadLAP
A2: Make time to connect with everyone, not just your leaders. Some of our best teachers do not aspire to lead, except within the classroom. We can honor their expertise by consulting with them. #LEADlap#viterbo636
A2: Relationships - if you know your staff and what they are passionate about, you can tap people on the shoulder to assist in areas you know they'd be confident leading in. If the culture is a positive one, people don't feel left out or jealous. #LeadLAP
A2 (cont.): Do daily check-ins with as many people as possible on a more personal level - "How are YOU doing?" "What's happening this weekend?" & asking about the progress from something that came up in a previous convo. #relationship#personalconnections#leadlap
A2 Genuinely connect with each staff in order to be able to offer opportunities to lead - however big or small - that are responsive to their strengths and passions. #viterbo636#LeadLAP
A2: Provide opportunities for others to be involved. Open doors for all. Meet others where they are and focus on small nudges towards what they are capable of they're achieving. #LeadLAP
A2 our #acps leaders also read a common text and apply in context to our work in our work together switch: how to change things when change is hard” for example #LeadLAPhttps://t.co/f2YpoHwT9y
A3: Allow teachers and students to explore new and exciting ideas. Let them share these ideas with their peers. Give teachers opportunities to explore and present new ideas and tools. #umedtech#edl577um#leadlap
The best leaders not only encourage innovation, they implement it. These leaders allow students' voices to be heard and ideas to be followed through. #LeadLAP
A3: Constant modeling by school leaders & staff! Showing that “failing” is OK & part of the learning process, which leads to ultimate success! #LeadLAP#viterbo636
Q3. Model, model, model. I share new tech with them so they can try in classrooms. Support them when taking risks then have Ts and Ss share what they use! Spreads innovation throughout the building #Leadlap
A3: Try to model expectations through my use of technology. Also share resources, encourage trying new things, and understand failure is a part of change...and that is okay. We learn through trial, error, and failure. #LeadLAP
A3 they model and share what they are learning on a regular basis, not just in PD but in all that we do we talk school and talk about what we have seen or read that we find inspiring or motivational #Leadlap
A3: Model what you believe is innovative. provide time and opportunities to build teacher capacity so they can also model what innovation looks like for students. #leadlap#viterbo636
Agree, Joan. Leaders must remember that there are team members who require time to reflect on information. Having an open-door policy allows these teammates to share their reflective thoughts and contribute to next steps #LeadLAP
a3: They focus on growth mindset which not only allows for mistakes but embraces them! Maybe even more importantly, they aren't afraid to try new things and share their journey (the good and the bad) #LeadLAP#viterbo636
A3: Model. Be the lead learner at your school. Let them see you learning risk-taking and being willing to fail. Share your learning and your mistakes. #LeadLAP
A3: When someone has an innovative idea they ask logistical questions that are important and may not have been thought about while also asking "How can I help with that?" They also encourage and ask "Is there a better way to do this?" #LeadLAP#viterbo636
A2: With as much work as there is in schools, there are plenty of things to delegate. The hard part is providing the training and supporting Ts with delegated assignments. #LeadLAP
A3: create a #cultureofyes where risk-taking and innovation are modeled and encouraged and failure is part of a growth mindset culture #leadlap#viterbo636
Teachers will duplicate what they see and experience! What is PD like at your school? What happens when a teacher tries something and it "fails"? What's the reaction of the school leader? Ts will risk when it's safe. #LeadLAP
A3 Empower them! Ask them for ideas. Encourage them to take risks and try new things. Support them when things don’t go right. Be approachable. Be present in their classroom. #LeadLAP
A3: Not to sound like a broken record, but this one is definitely modeling. Doing that in my current role...and in fact, in this chat right now. @gcouros says innovation is something new that makes something better. Everybody can do do that! #LeadLAP
A3: If we want staff and Ss to take those chances then they need to feel safe. That environment of a Growth Mindset and really using mistakes as learning opportunities #LeadLAP#EducatorsGrow
A2: Opening up leadership opportunities to all staff members & providing equal opportunities is crucial. I love creating a team that is diverse- one that even includes the naysayer to give a perspective that challenges the group. 👍🏼#LeadLAP
There is a whole section in #LeadLAP on ANCHOR conversations. It is a model for having conversations where people feel valued and you help push practice forward. #LeadLAP
In reply to
@LaneWalker2, @debbiejholman, @BethHouf
Coming to you from beautiful Las Vegas this morning. One way is not to think of it in terms of a legacy of success, but a legacy of significance. What role will we play in the lives of others? #leadlap#viterbo636
A2: Joining late...encourage Ts to take risks. Model risk taking as a leader is something I want to do and model more. Get staff sharing ideas and inviting each other into classrooms to observe great teaching. #LeadLAP
A4. Take risks early and often. Writing #HackingEarlyLearning was a very brave opportunity to show my staff I might not be perfect, but I am always learning. #LeadLap
A1. Focus on the positive! We model positive conversations, highlight positives, provide time for teachers to have positive and effective conversations, provide time for teachers to know and grow with their teams in a positive environment. We lead the way! #LeadLAP
A3: Strong leaders who model trying new things, are authentic, support growth, and connect to forward thinking ideas will foster an environment where people feel comfortable making mistakes and trying new things. #leadlap#viterbo636
A3: “The only way we can encourage innovation in our schools is to create a culture that is open to new things. Great principals find ways to say yes to ideas, innovation, and risk taking, empowering people to succeed and making the school better.” #leadlap#viterbo636@Jeff_Zoul
A3- Celebrate when others take are being innovative. Do not the worlds “this is how we have always done it” ever come out of your mouth. Be a life long learner. Be willing to take risks@yourself. #leadlap
A3: It has to start with Ts. If Ts don't model for Ss, it won't happen. I try to use every staff meeting to model instructional strategies/tech Ts can use in their classroom, and then make sure I note when they use it. #LeadLAP#viterbo636
A2: Sometimes we ask people we know will say yes...we need to ask and encourage those that have said no in the past. You never know when someone will be ready and able to lead and shine! #leadLAP
Observation: If the #viterbo636 crew didn't already know how fortunate they are to be learning from @Joe_Sanfelippo, this #LEADLAP chat might do the trick. Not your normal, sit and get class. :)
A3: Model innovation and create a culture that is safe to take risks. Share and celebrate the successes and grow and learn from the challenges. Plant lots of seeds (or snowballs!) and let them grow. #LeadLAP
A3 Encouraging innovation with staff means that we constantly ask the question "How can we do this better?" and actively engage in ideas to improve our practice. We encourage S innovation by crafting learning experiences that require them to think, innovate, & create #LeadLAP
Model, Model, Model! You have to practice what you preach. Take time and allow patience for failure because it can lead to something great. #viterbo636#leadLAP
A3 I think supporting Ts who are bringing innovative ideas to their classrooms is huge but leading with innovation is transformational for the whole culture of a building and beyond. #LeadLAP
A2. We have to make opportunities available for everyone to participate in. People begin to feel left out when they feel like everything is being done behind closed doors. We need To make all information available for everyone & give plenty of opportunities. #LeadLAP#troll209
A3: They show empathy, compassion and kindness. They ask for feedback, they trust their crew, they encourage and inspire, their passion is contagious, they are honest and they keep it real. #leadlap#Viterbo636
A3: Been trying to work on this lately, Listen more than talk. I often jump in when others are sharing an idea and insist that I help shape their vision immediately. I need to listen more to understand how they want me to assist. #LeadLAP
I have a little cheat sheet that I taped on my clipboard when Im doing observations with the Parts of ANCHOR! I’ve noticed how thankful my teachers are for the feedback! #leadlap#viterbo636
In reply to
@burgess_shelley, @LaneWalker2, @BethHouf
A3: Encourage safe risk taking, model being innovative, allow failure, give permission to your staff and students to be different and own it! #LeadLAP#viterbo636
A3 - Put the vision out there. Then give them time to play. It's a positive kind of pressure that says, "I can't wait to see what you come up with." Then, go look. Encourage. Encourage the leap. Regularly. #leadlap
This cracks me up. What personality informs others with, “I am your leader.”? Love the distributive leadership. Together. With your team is where and when the magic happens.#LeadLAP
A3: Always going back to the building vision. It has to be your "Northstar" for decision making and approach to addressing student, staff need and buidling goals. #LeadLAP
A3: Don't make innovation a big scary thing. Give people permission to "tinker" and "tweak". Innovation doesn't have to be huge... it is simply a new and better way of doing things. #LeadLAP
A3: What if a leader modeled making mistakes? What if we modeled creative problem solving when things did not go as planned? Let's model HOW to deal with problems as opportunities for growth and creativity! #leadlap#viterbo
A3: Model new ideas and strategies. Use faculty meeting to try new things so they can see that risk taking pays off and will lead to more engaging learning. Encourage them to do the same for students. We can talk about but we also need to demonstrate it. #leadlap
A3: The best leaders can encourage and expect a culture of innovation for staff & students by giving everyone involved freedom to express their knowledge & creativity - & give them opportunities to see/read about innovators, followed by PERMISSION to give things a try. #leadlap
We take chances on people. Too often leaders get burned by someone and they become guarded. Instead we have to continue to appreciate and elevate inspire of our wounds. #LEADLAP#viterbo636
A3: Allow them to make it better. My sworn enemy in life is the status quo 😂 and the most dangerous words in education are “we have always done it like this”. Allow for innovation and thinking outside of the box within our state, local and federal mandates. #leadlap
A3: Just say yes! Allow Ts to take risks w/out fear of judgement re: success or failure. The challenge is how to move those that don’t want to take risks. Same w/ Ss. Hoping that others learn by observing and then follow along w/ support. #LeadLAP
Observation: If the #viterbo636 crew didn't already know how fortunate they are to be learning from @Joe_Sanfelippo, this #LEADLAP chat might do the trick. Not your normal, sit and get class. :)
A2) Again, collaboration is key. The school environment thrives off collaboration between instructional and support personnel, parents, and students! This is what allows the school to be the perfect place to nurture a child’s mind and heart #LeadLAP
A3: Strong leaders encourage students & staff to be innovative by taking risks themselves, modeling a growth mindset, praising the process & by celebrating collective efforts of innovation.💡🎉And by always continuing to learn & to improve. #LeadLAP
I couldn't agree with this more. If innovation becomes a process like the design process, rather than a single path we'll be able to secure everyone along on the journey. #leadlap
A1 We take chances on people. Too often leaders get burned by someone and they become guarded. Instead we have to continue to appreciate and elevate inspire of our wounds. #LEADLAP#viterbo636#viterbo636
Too many times we missed what great things are going around the school. Celebrate great ideas is always so reinforcing, even for teachers. #leadlap#viterbo636
A3- Celebrate when others take are being innovative. Do not the worlds “this is how we have always done it” ever come out of your mouth. Be a life long learner. Be willing to take risks@yourself. #leadlap
Yes, in many ways not only will leadership skillsets need to change in a dilemma-riddled VUCA world, it also requires continuous updates to those skillsets and ongoing learning as the world shifts in a myriad of ways. #leadlap#viterobo636
It is absolutely essential. Your staff looks at you for guidance and leadership. They don't want toxicity in their school. When you are courageous, it changes everything. #LeadLAP
A3. I think we have to make it not a contest. Everyone on staff doesn't have to be the most innovative. Some will take small steps. Some will jump off a cliff. Both are good. #leadlap
A3: By interacting with staff daily and modeling how to take risks for better or worse! And truly emphasizing the team component of what we do! #LeadLAP
Q4: How do we as aspiring leaders seek out leadership opportunities in our schools without stepping on the toes of our leadership teams? #LeadLAP#viterbo636
A3: create a #cultureofyes where risk-taking and innovation are modeled and encouraged and failure is part of a growth mindset culture #leadlap#viterbo636
A4: Follow your heart & PASSION. If there’s a need in your school don’t be afraid to step up to the plate and fill that need/role in a positive & respectful manner. Communication is key! #LeadLAP#viterbo636
With Rural isolation our PD is weekly with staff meeting/PLC. PD is differentiated to meet T's need. T's report successes and failures. Failures are discusses and celebrated. This culture of Growth Mindset is evident with T's and S's #LeadLAP#viterbo636#RuralEdChat
A3: Innovation doesn’t exist in isolation, which means time has to be allocated to allow Ts to work together in think tanks, or innovation centers. The same is true for Ss. Current class structure must change. #LeadLAP
A2: Another thought. Not everyone has to lead. There is something to be said for also having people who are good followers, Who believe in what you are doing and want to help in their own way. #LeadLAP
A3: Don't make innovation a big scary thing. Give people permission to "tinker" and "tweak". Innovation doesn't have to be huge... it is simply a new and better way of doing things. #LeadLAP
A3: When people come to you with an idea they want to try, let them try it and support them in the process! Make sure people know that you are open to new ideas and feedback on ideas that came from you...it’s not personal, it’s collective improvement for the kids #leadLAP
A3: Trust their people to do what they were hired to do at the same time providing them opportunities to grow. When you really know your people and build relationships with them they will be willing to take chances. If it doesn't go as planned, allow them to try again. #LeadLAP
Such a great point. We must provide an entry point for everyone, and it will be different for everyone. Respect the different readiness of all. #LeadLAP
Q3: The best leaders define a culture of high expectations w staff, students & community first. They then model and create space for innovation for all within the school day. Also find multiple ways to celebrate and showcase creativity and innovation. #LeadLAP
A4: I look to other aspiring admins to see how they are contributing to their schools & communities. In my own school I offer to help with anything that comes up, believe in the power of "yes", and pitch ideas while supporting the ideas of others. #LeadLAP#viterbo636
Instead of focusing on failures focus on the design process where feedback is integrated throughout. Prototypes as evidence = evidence of growth. #leadlap
A3: Encouraging innovation requires us to allow creativity. Not everything needs to be "research-based best practices". Sometimes innovation precedes the research. #LEADlap#viterbo636
A4: I like when staff come in and talk about what they are passionate about, what their goals are. Then we can help find opportunities for them. We are always a team. #LeadLAP
Q4: How do we as aspiring leaders seek out leadership opportunities in our schools without stepping on the toes of our leadership teams? #LeadLAP#viterbo636
A4: Be subtle and just do. You don't need persmission or a title to lead and to be innovative. Lastly, be intentional and share what you are doing to people in leadership poistions. #636 #leadlap
A3: Inspire staff to take risks or try something completely different. Though budgets are limited, sending staff who want to grow/explore new ideas to workshops is money well spent. Often the result are many new ideas and practices that are shared with others.
#leadlap
A4. Oh this is a good one. Step up whenever possible. Best advice. Make your leadership a dead on reflection of you. Have a set of guiding principles...and then let it fly! #LeadLAP
Q4: How do we as aspiring leaders seek out leadership opportunities in our schools without stepping on the toes of our leadership teams? #LeadLAP#viterbo636
A3: I’ve never liked the phrase “risk taking” I feel like it can imply/ evoke fear or lack of safety. I prefer to promote innovation as an iterative process. Promote group metacognition. Thinking out loud is powerful #LeadLAP
Like your thoughts on expressing knowledge and creativity and seeing/reading about innovators, Eric. This alludes to team members engaged in consistent professional learning and incorporating ideas that link to the team's vision #LeadLAP
A3: Leaders who celebrate risk taking and success from students and staff will foster more innovation and positive culture than those who encourage status quo. #LeadLap
A4: The good news is that you can be a leader no matter where you are. You don’t need a title. You don’t need a position. All you need to begin is the desire to lead and the willingness to learn. #leadlap#viterbo636
A4:Again, I am not very experienced in this area, but I am learning a lot from the great people here. I would say to handle this delicately, with poise and stature, not to upset anyone and be sensitive to the feelings of others. #LeadLAP
Q4: How do we as aspiring leaders seek out leadership opportunities in our schools without stepping on the toes of our leadership teams? #LeadLAP#viterbo636
Make it known early in the school year that you are interested in taking on a larger leadership role. This way it is not a surprise when you ask for a leadership responsibility #leadLAP#viterbo636
A4: As leaders we should recognize when our strengths are needed. We shouldn't try to lead in a group that we are not strong. A good leaders knows when it is time to lead and when it is time to follow or be a part of the group. #umedtech#edl577um#leadlap
Q4: How do we as aspiring leaders seek out leadership opportunities in our schools without stepping on the toes of our leadership teams? #LeadLAP#viterbo636
#leadlap A4: I think if aspiring leaders finds a need that the current leader doesn’t have the capacity for at the moment, it creates the best win-win scenario!
Aspiring leaders should be learners first & leaders second! Leadership is about serving your community & creating opportunities for those you serve; know & understand those you serve (learn about them)! #leadlap
A4 talk with them. Ask them questions, see if they need any help. Any good leader will see they want to lead and will help mentor aspiring leaders. #LeadLAP
A4 - One way is to get "out of the house." Write. Blog. Podcast. Tweet. Put ideas out into the world. Interact with people who are doing what you want to do. Then, start doing it. Share it. #leadlap
A3: Leaders encourage others by their willingness to own failure, being transparent, having an open door policy, being and staying excited, sharing best practices! #leadlap#viterbo636
A4: this is how I accidentally became a school leader - found something I was passionate about changing - made a plan, asked around to staff and presented to admin the ideas that just needed approval - kept it up and then got an offer at the school to lead! #LeadLAP
The work of leadership is raising up the learning, awareness and possibilities of those they serve. Creating that environment of continuous improvement, allows people, as it should, the space to step up to those possibilities… #leadlap#viterbo636
The less you hold yourself accountable, the more you will be held accountable by others. There is freedom in taking full responsibility. Be free. Own your mistakes. And do the right thing every time all the time.
A2: Leadership roles can take on so many different elements that if we offer an array opportunities, then everyone has a chance to participate. And we should consider time limits to certain roles so that others have a chance. #leadLAP#viterbo636#edchat#leaders
A4. If it helps move the school forward and fits within the mission/vision/aspiration of the school I don't see how it someone could feel their toes being stepped on. Communication is important. Don't need to ask for permission if it fits and it's good for kids. #leadlap
A4 Be proactive in seeking out the opportunities... And then listen well when you are given the opportunity to join in on the process; you can learn a lot by listening well. #leadlap#viterbo636
A4: Jackie Robinson observed, “A life isn’t significant except for its impact upon other lives.” If you choose to influence others and become a better leader, I hope you will do so to add value to others. #leadlap#viterbo636
So true. Unfortunately, when you know you are not going to be supported, you either don’t move forward or you do it in secrecy. I often pursue the latter course. I don’t like being the rebel (all the risk falls on me) I prefer to be supported. #LeadLAP
A3: When people come to you with an idea they want to try, let them try it and support them in the process! Make sure people know that you are open to new ideas and feedback on ideas that came from you...it’s not personal, it’s collective improvement for the kids #leadLAP
A4 support people as they take risks, when people feel supported they are more likely to step up into leadership roles and step out of their comfort zones #LeadLAP
A4: We avoid stepping on the toes of our leadership teams by stepping right next to them! We need two feet to move forward! Otherwise, we’d go in circles! We can offer our personal take on things, our interest, opinions, actions. Stronger together! #LeadLAP 👣
A4: Could a leader be more effective at times by leading without being super visible? Intentional leadership does not involve being front in center all of the time. Empower others. Be intentional. Be authentic. #leadLAP#viterbo636
Q4: How do we as aspiring leaders seek out leadership opportunities in our schools without stepping on the toes of our leadership teams? #LeadLAP#viterbo636
A4: Leadership is not waiting for a leadership role. Look for areas of improvement that need attention. Start the drive to find solutions. #viterbo636#LeadLAP
A2 I think a large part of that is developing a language of expectation. We can generate leaders while fostering growth in those to come next as long as everyone knows there is a commitment to future opportunities. #LeadLAP#viterbo636
A2 I think a large part of that is developing a language of expectation. We can generate leaders while fostering growth in those to come next as long as everyone knows there is a commitment to future opportunities. #LeadLAP#viterbo636
A4: Find those that are eager to lead and have ideas but aren't sure how to progress. Include them, don't push them out. Have them involved from the beginning. #LeadLAP
https://t.co/7OQNJ08zvd I love all th educators who (sometimes don’t realize) that they are leaders by trying innovative things and sharing about it #leadlap
A4- Anyone can be a leader from any position, if they want to! Demonstrate leadership traits in your work, seek out new opportunities, and let others know your aspirations. #leadlap
Q4: How do we as aspiring leaders seek out leadership opportunities in our schools without stepping on the toes of our leadership teams? #LeadLAP#viterbo636
A4: I have never felt like an aspiring leader was "stepping on toes". . . I welcome his/her passion and interest and want to do anything I can to support him/her on the journey.
#LeadLAP
A4: With a risk-taking mindset becoming a partner in thought and action. Present yourself as someone that's passionate about building culture and investing in others. #leadlap
A1: I agree with everything that is being said, and I would add be courageous to respectfully call people out when necessary. What we permit as leaders, we promote. #LeadLAP#viterbo636
A4 I I am privileged to be able to lead an aspiring administrator academy in my district. It’s so exciting to offer a year-long apprenticeship to teacher leaders who are ready to step into the role of an assistant principal. #leadlap
Q4: How do we as aspiring leaders seek out leadership opportunities in our schools without stepping on the toes of our leadership teams? #LeadLAP#viterbo636
A4: Honor those who have led the way by going to current leaders on campus & asking how you can be help. Come with an idea (or 5). Is it a bad thing to step on some toes from time to time?! It gets those zombie leaders to react, & it doesn't have to be mean-spirited. #leadlap
A2. We must be knowledgeable of our Ts strengths and weaknesses, take the time to know our Ts and whether or not they wish to take on leadership roles and then provide those opportunities for them to grow. #LeadLAP
Questions for #viterbo636@Joe_Sanfelippo
1. Leadership is “caught” as much as it as taught. Among the people you know, who models a life of leadership that you find attractive and inspiring? How can you learn from him/her? #leadlap
#leadlap - Though egos shouldn't be an issue. It's a reality. IMO it's worth thinking about how things might be perceived. If some1 sees your work as being a problem, then you can get stalled. A few short conversations can grease the wheels of innovation.
A4: First of all, be a good teammate. Model what a good leader looks like, every chance you get. Take opportunities for leadership, especially in areas in which you are passionate. Take risks, and don't be afraid to fail. #LeadLAP#viterbo636
A4: Start by providing opportunities to lead for all..including Ss! Then it will become part of the culture. You don’t need a title to lead! #virerbo636#LeadLAP
A4: Find a need and fill it. Don't take over someone elses leadership role. Collaborate, demonstrate all hands on deck mentality to show your leadership ability. #leadlap#viterbo636
I told my principal a personal goal of mine is help build capacity with the staff. He has given me free rain to do this and even some $ to pay Ts for the PD I did with them instead of hiring subs. It has been great. #leadlap
A4: We avoid stepping on the toes of our leadership teams by stepping right next to them! We need two feet to move forward! Otherwise, we’d go in circles! We can offer our personal take on things, our interest, opinions, actions. Stronger together! #LeadLAP 👣
A4: Listening and gaining an understanding of the strides that have already been made and the hurdles that have been addressed are important first steps. #leadlap
2nd question for #viterbo636@Joe_Sanfelippo
2) What are your core values? Do you integrate them into your daily life or merely affirm them intellectually? #leadlap
A3: Creating a culture of #innovation is also accepting that sometimes innovation fails. Sometimes the idea doesn’t work, and that’s okay. Teachers & students have to know they won’t be punished for trying something without a guarantee of success. #leadLAP#viterbo636#edchat
A5: Start Small. Set them up for success & early victories. Model & help show them the way! There’s different ways to lead-At the forefront, Behind the scenes, Etc. Bld. On ppl’s strengths. Positive Praise! 1-on-1 conversations! #LeadLAP#viterbo636
Those leaders foster a sense of failure as opportunity. When people know trying something new isn’t deadly they begin the process of innovating and experimenting that leads to growth. #LeadLAP#viterbo636
A4: Relationships are everything! As educators, we make a conscious effort to build relationships. Offer our strengths, grow from the people around us who build on our challenges. When we benefit others, we can't step on their toes. #LeadLAP#viterbo636
A3 Those leaders foster a sense of failure as opportunity. When people know trying something new isn’t deadly they begin the process of innovating and experimenting that leads to growth. #LeadLAP #viterbo636#Leadlap
If that's the culture of your school/district, I agree with that statement. Point of either is to push outside the box and get a little uncomfortable. #LeadLAP#viterbo636
A4: Bring forth new ideas- design an interactive PD, apply for a grant to fund it, find ways to empower/ connect w others in the process. Remember that leadership isn’t only for those with a title or those who are part of a leadership team. #LeadLAP
Q4: How do we as aspiring leaders seek out leadership opportunities in our schools without stepping on the toes of our leadership teams? #LeadLAP#viterbo636
YES! We can say we want teachers to take risks, but the true test is how we react when a risk is taken and it doesn't go well. How we react in that moment will determine whether or not any more risks are taken. #LeadLAP
A5: Give them an opportunity to make it meaningful to them. Let them take ownership in the process and keep things simple for them. #LeadLAP#viterbo636
A3. I love the saying “Hire the best and get out of their way!” Can’t remember who to quote😬 Beyond that, provide them with the resources they need(within reason), create a culture where failure is growth and encourage the risks they are taking in the classroom. #LeadLAP
A4: This is about relationships. Have conversations about your ideas with your leadership team. Ask them to support you. A leader’s job is to help you grow. #LeadLAP
A4 Last year my colleague & I brought #LeadLAP to our principal & asked how we could bring her vision to life. We brought every PIRATE letter to our conversation & have ever since. We never know how much our own leadership matters unless we try.
A4: If an aspiring leader sees an area for growth within the school & has an idea about solving it, talk to your school leaders. As far as stepping on toes, this tends to happen if the approach to discussing the problem appears very negative or no solution is offered. #leadlap
A4: Simply making conversations and offering inspiration and help when needed.
I have emailed teachers and asked to pop in their rooms to tweet the great things our school is doing!
I also email admin resources I find and let them share out to staff! #leadlap
A5: Start small, not all leadership is a big thing. Talk to them one-on-one about what you see as their strong qualities to help lead something. Give them time to process. Keep trying! #LeadLAP
A5: Be genuine about establishing a positive relationship first. Find their strengths and empower them by utilizing their strengths. Everyone has a superpower! #viterbo636#leadlap
A4: Think about the things you’re passionate about and create a plan. Maybe it’s a spirit week or assembly. Maybe a breakout PD session to share with other teachers. Have a plan and know what you’d like to do and why. #leadlap
A3. I love the saying “Hire the best and get out of their way!” Can’t remember who to quote😬 Beyond that, provide them with the resources they need(within reason), create a culture where failure is growth and encourage the risks they are taking in the classroom. #LeadLAP
A5: This is part of the art of being a leader. We have to know our people so well. What makes them tick? What are their passions? What are the opportunities you can present to them where they just can't say "no". #LeadLAP
A4: Philosophically, an effective system recognizes that all are leaders. We don’t aspire to be leaders, because you just are. “Leadership” teams usually recognize the voices that have power & (should) invite others into the space of responsibility. #LeadLAP
A5: Seek out individuals who you think would do great in a particular leadership role. Make it personal to them and known that you believe that they are the person best suited for this role #leadLAP#viterbo636
They have to realize that what they are doing in their classrooms every day is leadership. Encourage them to widen their circle of influence with what they're already doing. https://t.co/q2uhkAojel#LeadLAP
If reluctance is “the opportunities are always designed for the same people, and not for me” look and listen for new opportunities that are outside the current norm #leadlap
A5: Not everyone is a willing leader outside their own classroom. Again, open doors, encourage ALL to walk through, especially if the door leads into their ballpark... #LeadLAP
A4: I don’t need a title to lead, and I could care less about stepping on toes. If I worried about stepping on toes, many of my Ss over the years wouldn’t have gotten the support they needed. I lead by being kind and fighting for my Ss. #LeadLAP
Our PD two years ago was carol dweck mindset book study with intentional and direct instruction to S's k-8. Celebrate failure! @casas_jimmy does a neat exercise to celebrate failure #LeadLAP#viterbo636#RuralEdChat
If they are a teacher, they are a leader. If they are leading their class in a positive and caring way. That's enough maybe for that person. Sometimes it's ok to be a follower. #leadlap
A5: Find their interests and strengths and build leadership opportunities from their comfort zone. They will extend themselves and grow when they feel comfortable. Lead them there on their own terms. #LeadLAP
A5: Identify their strengths. Pitch it to them. Let them know why you need them in that role and let them know you have the confidence that they will be successful. #LeadLap
A5: As a leader others need to feel comfortable taking the lead. Environment of no fear of judgement. People who are reluctant to step up just need to be reassured there is no fear of judgement. #umedtech#edl577um#leadlap
A5: love @casas_jimmy book #culturize makes a great point on refraining from the “gotcha” statement I feel staff are so under appreciated already if leaders approach this style it demoralizes any chance of staff stepping up. #LeadLAP#Viterbo636
A4: Toes getting stepped on part of leadership. If you're worried about stepping on toes (or your's getting stepped on) the you're a leader of one. Great leaders seek out opportunities to serve, as well opportunities for others to lead, because it's what's best for all. #LeadLAP
A5: As a principal I always encourage teachers to become the next leaders in education. I give them opportunities and place them in leadership roles within our SBDM to encourage them. #leadlap
A5: Find the function of their reluctance, what is causing them to respond in that way? Could it be a lack of skill, confidence, colleague issue? Work to build capacity and provide skill building if need be. Success will lead to more success. #Leadlap#viterbo636
A5. Notice out loud when things are done well. And remember those things, too. Just like you would for students in your class. There is magic in being noticed. #LeadLAP
A5: start small - highlight and praise a stength and ask them to share it with others - have others come watch it or ask them to talk/write about it and share with staff #LeadLAP
Our people are legit. You need to know them. Follow them herehttps://twitter.com/Joe_Sanfelippo/lists/viterbo636/members
SUPTS!!!!!!! Great leaders headed your way. #LeadLAP#viterbo636
A5: When we do ask people to step up, we also need to get really good at asking "What do you need from me?" "How can I help?" Let them lead, but be available and willing to support. #LeadLAP
A5. If they are a teacher, they are a leader. If they are leading their class in a positive and caring way. That's enough maybe for that person. Sometimes it's ok to be a follower. #leadlap
A4: I believe that good leaders should welcome the idea of improvement and innovation regardless of the source. New ideas and forms of leadership shouldn’t scare current leaders; it should ignite them. #leadLAP#viterbo636#edchat
A5: Constant encouragement and motivation. Point out their strengths and show why they are leaders. Also let them share ideas at staff meetings and other meetings #LeadLAP
A5: One of the best ways to inspire others and support them to take on leadership opportunities is to show them who they could be. People will go farther than they thought they could when someone they respect tells them they can. #allin#believe#leadlap#Viterbo636
A5: We can encourage reluctant leaders to take a leader role by sharing the vision about a specific opportunity once you know what makes the person "tick" (what their passions are). Tell them that you believe they can contribute, you trust/believe in them. #leadlap
A5: Get to the heart of their reluctance so you can offer the right support along the way. Remember that their timeline for leading might look different than what you envisioned. Show your confidence in them so they can build confidence in themselves.#LeadLAP#viterbo636
This goes back to talking with people and not about them. It's a hard mindset to change but great leaders need to inhibit this trait. #viterbo636#leadlap
A5: This is part of the art of being a leader. We have to know our people so well. What makes them tick? What are their passions? What are the opportunities you can present to them where they just can't say "no". #LeadLAP

A5: When we do ask people to step up, we also need to get really good at asking "What do you need from me?" "How can I help?" Let them lead, but be available and willing to support. #LeadLAP
A5: It depends on why they are reluctant. A conversation digging into the reluctance may shed some light. Letting people know your perception of their strengths with specific examples and how their leadership will benefit the school is often a good start.
#leadlap
A5. Ask with no expectations. Sometimes we don’t see in ourselves what others see as potentional. Be okay if people say No, or not right now-we never know what it is on others plates. #LEADLAP
A5: Not everyone is going to want to lead from the front, some may have great input on a new initiative, but may need to be sought out in diff ways- maybe checking in from time to time to learn their perspective- making all feel heard and valued 😊. #LeadLAP
A5: Another thought... if we want to encourage new leaders in our schools, we also need to be willing to make time to let them reflect and give them feedback. Don't let people sink or swim. #LeadLAP
A4. Reach out to your P or AP and let them know you are interested in learning as much as you can from them. Be at every event and watch what they do. Frame questions in a way that shows you want to understand their decisions for when you are in their position someday #LeadLAP
A5: Just like students, differentiate opportunities to lead. Not all leadership opportunities need to be labeled leadership opportunities. Find ways to plug in reluctant leaders and cultivate their best skills of service so they grow in confidence of their abilities. #LeadLAP

A4: When you are passionate about a challenge you identify in your classrooms, building and/or district, seek out leaders who would be willing to help guide you toward a solution. Value their guidance and let them see your passion toward coming up with a solution. #LeadLAP
Q4: How do we as aspiring leaders seek out leadership opportunities in our schools without stepping on the toes of our leadership teams? #LeadLAP#viterbo636

A5: If you've developed a relationship, you're choosing them for a reason. Ask why they're reluctant, then remove as many of those barriers as possible, and frame it as "WE need your help". Once they get rolling, look out! #LeadLAP#viterbo636
A5: Start small, allow them to get their feet wet in smaller leadership roles; at the same time encourage and support them in their journey and understand we may need to follow their timeline#viterbo636 #LeadLAP

A5: One-on-one conversations (as opposed to blanket emails) can easily empower reluctant educators to step up and make a systemic difference. #LeadLAP#HackingLeadership
A5 One chief responsibility of leaders is to recognize untapped leadership potential. We encourage reluctant team members by celebrating the work they are doing already & create opportunities to showcase this work on a larger scale. Encouragement provides energy to lead #LeadLAP
Just found another reason to admire PLN members with little people in their house. Tweeting at #LEADLAP while holding my infant nephew...not easy! What commitment new parents have to their learning and their families. #momsasprincipals#dadsasprincipals
A5: Discover something that person is passionate about and develop an opportunity in that area. But, if the individual is reluctant then I don’t want to set him or her up for failure. Instead, continue seeking out the positive and building confidence through support. #leadlap
A5: Encourage a T to co-lead in some way. Or, lead or co-lead a small group. OR...lead or co-lead a project that doesn’t involve presenting/speaking publicly. Perhaps beautification of school grounds or developing a way for students to blog. Behind the scenes leadership #LeadLAP

Love my principal! Allows me to lead but always sends a quick email asking if he can do anything to support me. Just nice to know he has my back :) #leadlap
A5: When we do ask people to step up, we also need to get really good at asking "What do you need from me?" "How can I help?" Let them lead, but be available and willing to support. #LeadLAP
A5: In the classroom, teachers work hard to build students' confidence through a thoughtful delivery of praise. Adults respond to encouragement and assurance, too. #leadlap

A5: When I have taken risks as a leader it has typically caused me to focus on my humility and ego. Am I afraid to take a risk because of the potential impact of how it may look for me? That is NOT an excuse to not take a risk. Great leaders can be okay with failing.#LeadLAP
I love my current director because he always tells me “let me know if you feel overwhelmed” and he will admit at times when he feels it too. Helps to know I have a safety net to not try to do too much on my own #leadlap
A6: Took a new job, at the district office, building a new Teaching-Learning-Innovation department. And then threw myself out there to learn, fail, tweet, blog, model. What great good could we do if we weren't afraid? https://t.co/U3Up3S8oOu#LeadLAP

A6 I think I have taken a ton of risks and sometimes they work and others they don’t but after reflection it’s what you do next that matters. Risk and adjustments are the most fun part of it all #Leadlap
