The Breakfast Club – #BFC530 – is a 15 minute, 1 question Twitter chat every weekday. We chat in 4 timezones Mon-Fri – 5:30am Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific Times. The mission of BFC is to empower participants to make a difference in education by engaging in consistent reflective practice in a supportive community that inspires and challenges one another.
Differentiation! My professor gave us varied experiences and tons or resources and guest speakers. She left us knowing that there is always a way to reach each student if you look hard enough #bfc530
Thining back to your professors in education courses in college; what was one thing they had right about being in an actural classroom, and the biggest thing they had wrong?

RIGHT: Relationships matter. I remember classes where I had a positive relationship with the professor who took time to get to know me.
WRONG: Mind-numbing lecture with our any formative assessment

If I really look back at my college classes I have to say it was almost an anomaly that one actually prepared me for my experience w kids today. It was being in my own moms classroom, helping her prepare, talking w her, watching what she did, that = a real degree. #bfc530
My 1st lesson in my 1st education course was to always be nice to the janitors and office staff b/c they make the school run & can make your life there easier or difficult And I have seen that as true time and again. #bfc530

The right was making the classroom activities authentic to the learner, the wrong was that there was not enough of an emphasis that teaching is a marathon, not a sprint. I will say @youngstownstate is a great place to earn my teaching degree. #BFC530

Good morning everyone-
Helpful: Doing ourselves what we'd expect Ss to do
Would have been helpful:
I wish we'd had a mini-course on organization- or at least brought Ts in who could help by sharing their own techniques.
#bfc530
My mentor in college was very awesome and he was right about most things:) I mirror my teaching style after his. He taught me by modeling the behavior, that you must have relationships and engage authentically with your Ss.

Not enough on classroom management (if anything), special education and differentiation wasn’t really a thing you taught back then, but it was something you did. #bfc530
I agree, the learning from being in the classroom, either teaching or just observing, is the most beneficial. In my undergrad a long time ago, we had to observe one day. Glad there is more of an emphasis on that before student teaching #bfc530

I think indoor water parks are a fabulous invention. Just to forget the gray dry cold air for a day will be magnificent 💫
Sorry about your parents though, I hope all goes well with that #bfc530
One college mentor was right when he said: You may be the most passionate person in the room about your content. Share the passion, pass it on. #bfc530
#bfc530 I can remember how all of my instructors repeated the importance of being flexible, which is so true. I can't think about what I wish we had discussed more, since the #teaching world has changed so much since then. We had to #learn about those changes as they came.

Thank you! Long journey ... Happy they are going to a wonderful place and only 5 minutes away. Going to be able to "visit" again, not just put out fires. #bfc530
I only had Intro to Education and Teaching Diverse Population as classes before I started teaching ... “how to teach” was a basic unknown to me when I started #bfc530
Good morning! PD "Wellness" day for us today - we are meeting at the school (kids have off) and have to wear "comfortable workout clothes". I hear YOGA is one of the items on the agenda! #bfc530
I argued once that the kids would hate the approach that he was showing us because it was boring and kids would be tuned out. I was right to argue. #bfc530
And I don’t mean to bash higher ed as I did learn a lot, just not about actual teaching and classroom management, you know? That’s the crucial stuff that can drive a t right out of the profession. We need to get student Ts in front of kids, w a mentor support right away #bfc530
The thing my profs got wrong was not losing a second of time off task of the subject matter and not enough on building relationships with your students. #bfc530
#bfc530 HARRY WONG! They had Wong 101 right! How to be an effective teacher the first days of school! Procedures are so important. The kids truly feel safety in boundaries mixed with #sel.
Off hand, I can’t remember anything they had wrong 🤔

As @msiwanicki just graduated, I feel her education at UCONN was stellar. There is always things they don’t prepare you for. Colleges need to watch to get the best cooperating teachers there are. That is where the real learning comes in. #bfc530
So true today. My professor didnt mention that b/c there were no tech people back in the dark ages of my undergrad (and probably not for another 10-15 years after that LOL) #bfc530#reallyoldschool
My teacher program was a long time ago and when I was starting out there was very little applicable to the day to day. However, having just finished my leadership program, I felt more prepared for my position #bfc530
Also student Ts need WAY more support and actual practical instruction about how to teach and support kids w special needs and how to cope w extreme behaviors and supporting extreme achievement diversity in one classroom #bfc530
❌ Reinventing the wheel and creating full lessons & unit plans from scratch... So many good activities online to try.
✅ Creating hands-on, engaging activities.

Looking forward to an NYC adventure for a few days with the ENTIRE family.
Rented an apartment. Revisiting favorite museums, etc.
Wharhol exhibit and HAMILTON on Broadway!!
Adventure awaits...
Have a great weekend. #bfc530
If I go all the way back to college, I think about my lit and writing classes and I think about how AP doesn’t align with the real deal. I didn’t study ed in my undergraduate #bfc530
#BFC530 LOL. the biggest thing they had wrong was .... only one day in abnormal psych to cover autism. “You’ll never have an autistic child”. Pre-RainMan days!!!!! SPED major.....
And you know those great all in one consumer shop classes we took in high school where you learned the basics of many things...how about that for Ts like classroom arrangements, how to manage paperwork effectively, how to make the most of your breaks, etc #bfc530
This is good in theory, but I also realize that many teachers look to me for my reaction ... I do not want to turn them off to something they may need because they assume me leaving is a sign that it sucks when in actuality I already know it. #bfc530
I think higher ed is training too many teachers for leadership positions. The number of people applying far out number the number of positions available. #bfc530
Agreed! Nor the health benefit of Chocolate. Scientific American reported a correlation between consumption of chocolates per capital and the number of noble laureates per capita. If you want to be smart, eat chocolate. After all correlation equals causation, right! ✅ #bfc530

You’ll find at least one good takeaway I’m sure. Even if it’s something a colleague tosses out anecdotally to you. Good luck, I hope it’s pleasantly surprising for you! #bfc530

Yes! I was assigned to a teacher who “needed a break” due to medical issues. Luckily I was not a kid but getting certified through a master’s, but I had very few edu classes and had to go on instinct. I’m still playing catch-up in some ways. #bfc530
I think a good teachers college assignment would be to take a lesson/activity from somewhere (@ddmeyer, @MrOrr_geek, @MathletePearce, etc) and show how you would adapt it to suit YOU #bfc530

Yes! #bfc530
Or even just teach it as is in your practicum or in class to a small group of peers & reflect on what worked, what didn't, & how you'd make it even better next time.
Lately, I’ve been talking to colleagues (and honestly anyone that will listen) about how I think we need more mental health support for our teachers, especially in high needs schools. Secondary trauma is real. #bfc530
#bfc530
Best thing I learnt at uni was deep breathing and projecting voice. No laryngitis.
Worst was lack of strategies for developing relationships with students. Yes you can smile before easter but yr also not their mate.
#teacherlife
About 90% of the job is paperwork and meetings. No, they didn't tell you that in college--and they won't, but persevering thru the parts that are less desirable is definitely worth the 10% that breathes meaning into your passions. Press on! #bfc530

My path to teaching was different. Started as ELED major, switched and then returned for a master's in Sec Ed after already being in a classroom as a long-term sub. I consider my colleagues and my students my first year as my most helpful professors.
#bfc530
I’d imagine it would be on site mental health staff for the adults in the building either permanently or visiting a few times a month. Teachers could do group therapy or individual sessions and the cost could be covered by our health insurance. #bfc530
Right: well organized & thorough unit plans allow for creative deviation w/o interruption or distraction
Wrong:
* teacher cliques exist; they’re ugly
* how to guard against the negative
* SPED is *not* another classrm. It’s YOUR classrm. we all learn differently
