We're chatting about using edtech for social good! How can companies and teachers work together to envision a better world?! Chat with Empatico, Jen Williams and more educators!
happy to join you this is my first chat. I'm studying #edtech at Missouri Baptist University so I can't wait to join in on the conversation to see what I can learn. #edet543#edtech4good
Welcome to #edtech4good! Honored to be here with @EmpaticoOrg & @participate here tonight! Please introduce yourself & tag in your 3 favorite Edu-Do-Gooders!
Hi! I’m Jenny. I was a MS teacher/literacy coach for 6 years in NC public schools before 5 years (& still counting) at edtech companies. Sometimes I feel like I have one foot in both worlds-both education & the corporate space-but don’t quite fit in 100% in either. #edtech4good
Hi! Nancye Black, CEO/Educational Consultant of The Block Uncarved -- instructional design and PD, educating for limitless potential! Happy to be here! #edtech4good
Hello hello! Kristin from @empaticoorg currently in NYC -
so excited for this conversation. Hope it's the start of many. Much to learn and share. #edtech4good

Hey everyone! Excited to hang out with you all tonight :) I work with teachers, principals, Supts, and just about anybody in between. Usually focused on capacity-building #edtech4good
A1 This may not make sense, but the ability to question well. Going fast with a knee-jerk idea might "work," but will it really enable the kind of good you want to see? What if there's something even beyond what you're thinking, just over the horizon? #edtech4good
Mike, Tech Integrator from NY here for #edtech4good chat. Tagging in 3 favorite edu-do-gooders @MrsMurat@ProfeEdTech@JoyceBronwyn. Hoping they can tag 3 more and so on, for a chain reaction of good.
Wahoo!! Working on another one tonight! I totally need to send you the one I did during the @participate meetup. Just realized that I didn't post it! #edtech4good
A1: Using social good in the classroom fits hand in glove with design thinking and PBL with the added bonus of actually addressing the soft skills we always talk about but are incredibly hard to address like empathy #edtech4good
A1: It starts with the mindset that compassion, empathy and collaboration are not only the right things to do for the human race, but also pragmatically integral tools for teaching and learning at any level #edtech4good
A1: The big competencies for me related to social good are being comfortable with ambiguity and flexibility because things never go the way you think they will. #edtech4good
A1: When I think of social good, I think of empathy, respect, appreciating diversity, ethical responsibility, identifying problems and collaborating to solve them. #edtech4good
A1 I'd like to see skills developed such as empathy, commitment, resilience, communication, systemic and creative thinking, self reflection, collaboration & storytelling (you'll need others to believe in your cause to create a team effort). #edtech4good
A1 The skill I most want to foster in my classroom is the ability for my students to effectively collaborate with their peers and across the curriculum. These are skills I feel they can take with them when they enter the workplace. #edtech4good#edet543
Hi #edtech4good Jennifer TL from Newmarket, ON & author of #socialLEADia I want Ss to be empathetic and to consider the perspective of others both in person & online.
A1 to help Ss understand other perspectives, seek ways to connect with community, globally to help solve problems, build new connections, develop SEL skills, work with peers #edtech4good
A1: great question! I like to see my students contribute to the constructivist online learning community. They create tutorials to teach others. Take what they know and share it. #edtech4good
Right on! I believe these skills are essential for our kids to learn especially as they begin interacting in a globally interconnected world. sometimes its easy to forget a person is on the other side of the keyboard. #edet543#edtech4good
A1 I'd like to see skills developed such as empathy, commitment, resilience, communication, systemic and creative thinking, self reflection, collaboration & storytelling (you'll need others to believe in your cause to create a team effort). #edtech4good
A1: We at @speechanddebate are working to help our members (coaches and students) truly understand that their #wordsmatter and to provide a platform for their voices. With that though comes respect for those with whom you don't agree! #edtech4good
A1: One of the biggest successes of using social good in the classroom is that it combats learned helplessness at a very early age. Even small projects reinforce to Ss the ability to make a difference with their education #edtech4good
Too many times we set limits on the how long a explanation can be. That is one of the drawbacks to somelike flipgrid. Length can be too short to get demonstrate deeper learning #edtech4good
A1) For my Ss to realize that there is a great big beautiful world outside of our walls that is waiting to be explored by them. I want them to realize that we are more similar to each other than we are different. Celebrate differences, but look for commonalities.♥️ #edtech4good
A1: Building a classroom culture where things are consistently modeled in the classroom and in the school by adults sets the stage for all the things people have been listing. #edtech4good
A1: I want to knock down the classroom walls with tools like Skype and Flipgrid. I want to help Ss and Ts have global mindedness and empathy via connections! #edtech4good
Reminds me of @SirKenRobinson saying, "Collaboration is the real vitamin of creativity." Amazing what we can achieve when we work together! #edtech4good
A1: Being curious about, seeking out, and exploring other perspectives. Magic happens when we combine our collective experiences and perspectives. #edtech4good
A2 have been trying to do this through #pbl going to have students look at the #SDGs and learn more, extend their learning, focus on an area of interest, work independently or in teams #edtech4good
Q2 Library card is my number one answer. All the books. Being aware of other ideas. Thinking about those on the margins. I can't participate in creating social good without being aware of the needs of those around me and the ways I'm *not* reaching far enough #edtech4good
Yes! Me too! So many amazing resources to #teachsdgs. I miss my 3rd graders, but I love working with teachers all over the world and developing global education resources. #edtech4good

A2: I think there are many educators who are amazing resources for social good. It's quite the honor to be surrounded with a diverse, brilliant think tank. #edtech4good
Say it louder for the people in the back! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Happy to be here with this awesome group. Chats involving the word GOOD always bring out the GREAT ones. Honored to play a small part in contributing :) #edtech4good

A2: I'm no longer in the classroom, I'm constantly reminded that we as adults need to model empathy and respect. Our Ss are seeing a lot of "bad behavior" in our world today and we need to demonstrate qualities that are worthy of being seen! #edtech4good
I always get excited when I hear folks advocate for adults modeling the behaviors they want to see in their Ss. So much more effective than speaking at kids! #edtech4good
A2 We preach this all day long, but the SDG's really are the perfect template to start building impactful, well supported lessons. @TeachSDGs#edtech4good
A2: So many great resources to bring focus to social good in classrooms! This also applies to PL & corporate training too, especially in designing edtech products for all, like WCAG 2.0, dylexia simulations, or @chrisulmer 's work #edtech4good
A2: Our School Mission Statement: “Practice Kindness, Aim High, Work Hard, Show Respect”, developed by school community, students, parents, staff. Modeling this Mission Statement daily. #edtech4good
A2 one of my favorite resources to use is CNN:10 everyday they have number of stories that Ss can discuss and brainstorm about how they could contribute. #edtech4good#edet543
A2 I think @Buncee is a fabulous resource. We focused on social good of well being through #BunceeBuddiesMilesOfSmiles. Schools from near and far contributed. Everyone could use a smile. It's contagious. Also LOVE @EmpaticoOrg examining local and global communities. #edtech4good
A2: People! I have a real need to know and connect with others and because of these connections I have been humbled and inspired again and again. #edtech4good
A2: This conversation between Bill Gates and Steven Pinker from last week's NYT is a great overview and resource for all of us. Arguing why it's in humanities best interest to do well by doing good: https://t.co/As5A6ClZwH With data to prove it! #edtech4good
Q3: How can #edtech companies better support teachers in their endeavors to bring focus to social good in their classrooms and in their practice? #edtech4good
Been compiling research and designing projects that strategically build bridges social capital and generalized trust in students which are critical. Also, love #citizenscience projects for cooperation around real world problem solving. #edtech4good
A2) My biggest resources are my Ss and their awesome families. Being able to learn and teach about their individual cultures is a special moment for all involved. Spreading diversity when it is in your real life environment is powerful. #edtech4good
Q3: How can #edtech companies better support teachers in their endeavors to bring focus to social good in their classrooms and in their practice? #edtech4good
A2: If you are wanting to get your kids involved in SDG projects, Participate has amazing resources that we have supplemented with paths on our platform that teachers around the world are already working on right now. #edtech4good
It’s the simple things sometimes that get so much bang for the buck! Expectations of positive behavior is huge for me. They will have to encounter that everyday of their life even if they forget some of the skills I teach them. #lifeskill#edtech4good
I always get excited when I hear folks advocate for adults modeling the behaviors they want to see in their Ss. So much more effective than speaking at kids! #edtech4good
On a related note, I'm a huge fan of @CNNHeroes as a source of inspiration. I have had my MS Ss research their stories and think about what motivated them to put aside other activities/responsibilities to change the lives of others. #edtech4good
A2 one of my favorite resources to use is CNN:10 everyday they have number of stories that Ss can discuss and brainstorm about how they could contribute. #edtech4good#edet543
A3 it has to be a core component of the product offering. You shouldn't be able to use the product without knowing how it's contributing to bettering the lives of others (in your classroom, community, state, beyond) #edtech4good
Q3: How can #edtech companies better support teachers in their endeavors to bring focus to social good in their classrooms and in their practice? #edtech4good
A3: #edtech companies have the opportunity to be the bridge connecting and bringing learners together- this comes with accessibility and access! #edtech4good
Just discovered citizen science projects in 2016. Was a math teacher prior and didn't know of these before being a tech integrator pushing for some global collaboration. Powerful! #edtech4good
A3: continue to provide resources accessible by all Ts, leverage partnerships to build and sustain grass roots educational efforts such as #edcamps. Help Ts connect Ss from around the world. #edtech4good
A3b I'm a *huge* fan of companies that are willing to be people. Teachers should know that the company has their best interests at heart. Profit should be seen as votes of confidence from consumers that *love* what you do and who you do it for #edtech4good
A3: Teachers are everyday innovators and entrepreneurs. Proving a voice and resources for teachers to implement real change in organizations will not only provide support, but increase innovation and productivity throughout the organization #edtech4good
A3 I think that many edtech companies are doing an amazing job at providing assistance to lower income school districts. The tools that are constantly being developed have completely changed the way I view education. #edtech4good#edet543
A3 By bridging use of a tool with class curriculum, ideally through global collaborative project & also an opportunity to use that same tool to help someone else improve their life/world. Create space or project that uses the #edtech4good to enlighten/change lives for the better.
Q3: How can #edtech companies better support teachers in their endeavors to bring focus to social good in their classrooms and in their practice? #edtech4good
Q3: How can #edtech companies better support teachers in their endeavors to bring focus to social good in their classrooms and in their practice? #edtech4good
A3 honestly, I really on edtech like @activelylearn and @CommonLit to do my homework for me and remind me of celebrations, holidays, topics, accessible readings - I don’t always use the lessons but I ALWAYS use the reminders and inspiration #edtech4good
I was going to respond similarly. A majority of educators are in this to make a difference and to enlighten our Ss. Any company we work with or product we use must align with this vision. It’s all about the kids or I’m not with you. #edtech4good
A3 it has to be a core component of the product offering. You shouldn't be able to use the product without knowing how it's contributing to bettering the lives of others (in your classroom, community, state, beyond) #edtech4good

Q3: How can #edtech companies better support teachers in their endeavors to bring focus to social good in their classrooms and in their practice? #edtech4good
Q3: Companies must ask Qs & LISTEN! (PS. I'm so excited to read through all of these responses.) We aren’t missing great business leaders in edtech; we’re missing more great teachers' voice DURING product development (not as merely end-users w/ feedback then) #edtech4good
A2: Having just completed a PL on equity was an incredible eye opener for me and really made me look at how we, as educators can have a profound impact on the social development of our Ss. WE teach them by modeling, by being that positive voice in their lives. #edtech4good
A3 let’s be more explicit about mission in #edtech. We need to be here for equity, access, Justice, and peacebuilding before anything else. Plaster this mission everywhere and foster the relationships that support it. #edtech4good
A3c I wonder how products might change if we shifted the conversation from "I made this for you" to "I made this with you" or "We made this together" #edtech4good
A3) Our Ss and Ts are not cookie cutter images of each other. We are all unique and should be treated as such. Appealing to a wider audience makes your platform more appealing for use in the educational realm. I want my kids to SEE diversity in action. #edtech4good
A3c I wonder how products might change if we shifted the conversation from "I made this for you" to "I made this with you" or "We made this together" #edtech4good
Q3: How can #edtech companies better support teachers in their endeavors to bring focus to social good in their classrooms and in their practice? #edtech4good
A3 Nathan is abstaining from this question do to some treatment of friends by some companies. Have a better support model when teachers have trouble #edtech4good
A3. For a hands on experience and updates on what can be done better , it's imperative that companies and teachers work in tandem...for teachers' professional flgrowth and general awareness also it makes sense #edtech4good
A3 There was a divide between the Ed and the Tech since the edtech boom began. We have noticed that the more ed we are, the better the tech becomes. #edtech4good
No one understands the realities of the classroom more than teachers, no one else is more qualified to advise and work with edtech companies in any endeavor... including bringing focus to social good. #edtech4good
A3c I wonder how products might change if we shifted the conversation from "I made this for you" to "I made this with you" or "We made this together" #edtech4good
Yes, you will really appreciate the resources at @RootsandShoots. Both projects to join in on and the resources teachers and students need to scaffold their own! #edtech4good

A3: Parents, Administrators, Tts & Ss want data to show progress, to prove mastery. Tts constantly need to provide proof. Make the data accessible, retrievable, and in a lay person’s language! #edtech4good
Q3: How can #edtech companies better support teachers in their endeavors to bring focus to social good in their classrooms and in their practice? #edtech4good
This is just the BEST. You need to see what @MuskanVOfficial is doing for social good. She has a book on gratitude and also a foundation for the homeless. She's in Grade 6! #inspired#edtech4good
A3: many #Edtech companies are already involved in social Good. Encourage students, educators to participate and support their involvement to make it happen. #edtech4good
A3. My answer is always that need everyone working towards #SDG4 by supporting teachers and girls education, which is the key to sustained progress on all of the #globalgoals#edtech4good
A3: Teachers are everyday innovators and entrepreneurs. Proving a voice and resources for teachers to implement real change in organizations will not only provide support, but increase innovation and productivity throughout the organization #edtech4good
A3: Edtech companies need to ensure they are not allowing inappropriate content to spoil the learning experiences of students who are connecting to others in the world. Reporting mechanisms should be prompt, effective. #edtech4good
Q3: How can #edtech companies better support teachers in their endeavors to bring focus to social good in their classrooms and in their practice? #edtech4good
I agree with @ellenperezEd. Ts have to do the heavy lifting, but little mini tidbits and freebies go a long way in supporting the teacher and help them spend their energy on the teaching and not on creating things from the ground up! #edtech4good
A3 let’s be more explicit about mission in #edtech. We need to be here for equity, access, Justice, and peacebuilding before anything else. Plaster this mission everywhere and foster the relationships that support it. #edtech4good
A3d Teachers, you should also actively invite people to your classroom, even if it's virtual. Companies, you should have a "bring us to your classroom" link on your page. Don't wait for serendipity. #edtech4good

Last week, @Malala and @Apple CEO @tim_cook met in Beirut, Lebanon to discuss their new partnership. They spent the day speaking with Syrian refugee girls and listening to their stories.
