The #michED chat is a grassroots effort dedicated to giving teachers, students, and parents across Michigan a bigger voice in the conversation about education in our state. We welcome all voices through a variety of projects, media, and social networking. We’re trying to address educational issues through apolitical conversation, spreading ideas and stories of success from Michigan classrooms across the state, and helping teachers and students regain the courage to connect and demonstrate that schools in Michigan are creating amazing opportunities for learning. We want the face and voice of education in Michigan to be a mural of shared experiences and positive examples of connected learning.
Hello everyone! I am an aspiring teacher ed major at Adrian College in Michigan. I can not wait to learn and discuss over the next hour! #michEd#TED108
First question coming up. Remember, this evening’s chat is focused on what to do when the “honeymoon is over” with students in October, although it may have been earlier for some of you. #miched
A1: For me, the honeymoon was always over when the first student tried to see if I was bluffing about taking their device away (I taught in a 1:1 setting) #miched
I believe that students will begin to act differently and maybe not be as excited in the classroom, the behaviors and mannerisms show when the “honeymoon” is over. #michEd#TED108
A1: At HS there isn't always a "honeymoon" period. I think it was more a reality of their schedule set in. Juggling 6 classes, late assigned homework with work and extra curriculars. More stressed, assingments not complete on time. #MichED
It can be difficult to talk about things that feel like they’ve gone wrong in your classroom, but losing that “honeymoon” feeling with students at the start of the year isn’t a failure. #michEd
Seeing students appear more tardy, more willing to talk in class, or just appear more indifferent seem to be signals that the “honeymoon” is over. #michEd
Yeah, once the subject and class schedule become repetitive I think I begin to act differently and not be as excited to go to class. The beginning of the school year is nice because it is new information and the schedule is new as well. #TED108#michED
A2: The post honeymoon period was always exciting for me as a teacher because it meant students were comfortable with each other, more willing to let their guard down to learning and building relationships. #miched
A2: Relationships kick in. The real work begins. Students are more "real" in not just in ways that are negative, or acting out. They can provide feedback and actively participate in planning their environment and learning. #MichED
Based on personal experience in the classroom, I think that students tend to act up less and do their work more. Most students realize that their grades are important so they need to focus on work in order to get those grades. #TED108#michED
Q3: How do you help lift up your colleagues and fellow educators when they like they’ve lost control of their classroom in October? Are there times when you’ve felt that? #michEd
#
I think you can lift up your colleagues by reinforcing confidence to them. I believe that if you sit down and talk with them and discuss the difference they can make on a students life they will be motivated to re-control the classroom. #TED108#michED
A3: I felt like I had lost control of my students one year when they told me they didn’t like the assignment Inhad given them and didn’t want to do it. Used it as an opportunity to ask them how we could make it better together. #miched
Q3: Listen and empathisize without comparing your experience. And, unless you're a mentor keep the unsolicitedd advice to yourself! And, an small intentional act of kindness. Favorite coffee or cold beverage to start the day. #MichED
You gotta bear each other's burdens. You visit. Listen. Goal set. Idea build. The classroom begins and ends with lesson design. So take the focus off of "those kids" and put it on stuff we can control together.
Help them see progress. #MichED
Q3: How do you help lift up your colleagues and fellow educators when they like they’ve lost control of their classroom in October? Are there times when you’ve felt that? #michEd

A3: Bring it: Every. Day. Is the honeymoon over? Or was there ever a honeymoon to start? Could it be that students are excited to begin the year because Ts are excited? then weather gets cold, monotony sets in, & Ts forget to bring that same excitement & positive attitude #miched
It's stress-inducing. That's why we see it as a bad thing. It's nicer if they just do what they are told.
Teachers have to step up their game. Which makes sense. Students should, by then, be able to step their game up, too. #MichED
A4: For veterans, are there any tricks, tips, or tactics you employee to push through October when students start “getting real” in your classrooms? #michEd

My mom is also a teacher and I know one thing that keeps her going as a is the fact that she wakes up every morning and loves her job. She loves working with students and even when it might seem hard to love her job, there is always good moments to enjoy. #michED#TED108
A4: When it came to getting through October, I would always make sure students could demonstrate how they were upholding the contract we made together in September. #miched
A4 - Make your classwork interesting and meaningful. Do everything on purpose. Be super positive with the kids and keep working on the community.
When they start dragging, go motivational speaker 10 times before you start yelling at them for dogging it. #MichED

A4: great time to reflect. Have students been involved in setting expectations? Choice in assignments and assessments? have you established routines and protocols, or do you need to be explicit in modeling and practicing expectations. #MichEd

It’s been a slow chat this evening, likely from conferences, exhaustion, and other realities that October presents. What’s one thing you can do to help push forward tomorrow now that the “honeymoon” is over? #michEd
Mix up how you greet students. Intentionally greeting each student with a smile is going to set the tone for the day/hour. I do this at central office too! #MichEd
