Hello #SSTLAP!!! I'm one of the co-hosts tonight as we look at "A Plethora of Pirate-y Pursuits". @CHitch94 and I thought summer might be a good time to explore what @dbc_inc has to offer beyond the original #TLAP.
Chris from Bloomington, IN. Teach world history for private online HS affiliated w/ Indiana University. I have Teach Like a Pirate and Mastering the Media by @julnilsmith#sstlap
Q1: #TLAP - The original itself! Any hooks you plan to include this year that you have not before? Any Pirate-y plans for welcoming kids back? #SSTLAP@burgessdave
I admit I'm a book-addict and I have several (but nowhere near all) of the books associated with #TLAP...and there are at least three that I've had to buy multiple copies of due forgetting who I "loaned" it to last. #sstlap
A1) I have rolling enrollment so not everyone starts at once but I love having Ss share what topics in history they're excited about. Helps break the ice w/ other students. #sstlap
In #tlap I share my first 3 days...it starts with the Play Doh lesson and then moves to a lesson I call "Stranded" that involves groups working together to come to consensus. #sstlap Every kid is a maker, every kid talks, works together right away
A1: at the start of the year I do a You Found A Wallet simulation to have students use context clues & inferences to begin investigating and thinking like a historian #sstlap
A2) Ok, so I'm REALLY excited to try more of this in an intentional way this term. If you aren't already familiar with @TalkinSS - we JUST did an episode with @Meems852 on this with LOTS of ideas for SS #SSTLAP

A2) I'd really love to incorporate badges into my online courses and find ways for students to "level up" after completing certain challenges. Need to think about this more. #sstlap
historyteachers on YouTube have some videos that my kids love. This one is their favorite so far. After listening they sing "ooh, fleas on rats" for weeks afterwards. https://t.co/rBKKvGMVIY
I have a hilarious story I tell my kids (with phone video) of some crazy college band singing a punk number about the plague - giggle fest for weeks (& then never forget to blame the fleas)! #sstlap
Q3: #ZenTeach - Creativity can wear you out & the exhaustion can make you a bit nuts. How do you center yourself when it seems like chaos? What’s your #ZenTeach move? #sstlap@thezenteacher
A3) I try getting quieter the more frustrated/annoyed I get. Use it in parenting as well. LOL But seriously, this Q is a good reminder that I need to get back into yoga regularly. #sstlap
Love this idea. Earning a badge brings a sense of accomplishment and pride that perhaps is more meaningful than a traditional simple letter grade upon completion.
I've been using @classcraftgame to keep track of points, and the rewards on there are great. I just started gamifying last year, so this year I'll be incorporating a lot more! I did a fun Civil War game that I blogged about too. https://t.co/SvKmaq0T7O#sstlap
A3) With teaching AP and being back in Grad school, I savor a good still moment without demands. I try to carve out somthing small for myself once a week - a bad novel, a pedicure, a movie. Something. #SSTLAP
This wek, it's a trip to Lake Tenkiller for the College Bassmaster Championship - my younger cousin is competing again for the last time & I've never seen him compete! #SSTLAP

A3: When I need to calm down immediately, I just sit and close my eyes and imagine the lyrics to whatever song comes to mind floating in front of me like a singalong. Focusing on that distracts me long enough to calm down. Netflix is great during down time too! #sstlap
LOL My work laptop has the most annoying keyboard. So many unintended double letters. 😡 Between that and laggy Tweetdeck, I need that Zen reminder. :) #sstlap
A5) I've built the rep, & I keep a copy of #XPlap & #TLAP on my shelf (hence the need to buy multiple copies - I'm eager to share!). I;m a bit mad at myself for dropping the ball for a site book study, but #OKteacherWalkout happened #sstlap
A4) My ELA colleague and I will be developing some PD materials for other teachers for our online school. Hoping to make it interesting & help all of us think of ways to make our courses more engaging. #sstlap

A5) I need to find some ways to do this in my online course. Challenge for me b/c there are no synchronous components. Need to get more creative in this area. #sstlap
A5: Spread the positivity! Give positive shout outs, show others that you appreciate their effort, and showcase awesomeness of students and staff! #sstlap
Such a good idea! I think in education, we tend to get beaten down by some negative feedback as do our Ss. Good to remember that we may be the one positive part of someone's day. #sstlap

A5) I try to remember that the more excited I am, the more the kids will be too. So...the kids are conviced it's not just tea in my big mug (ha!). #crazylady#ohTHATroomAgain#SSTLAP
Q6:#TeacherMyth - Perfect teachers are like unicorns, they don’t really exist! So, do you THRIVE as a teacher? #sstlap (insert Aaron’s graphic for the acronym). @aaron_hogan
A6) I admit to realy needing this reminder lately. I need to carve out more Twitter time - I need that build up more than I've given time for .
And @CHitch94 has been my keeper/kind reminderer lately #sstlap
I imagine that can be a really big challenge with online teaching. I think even in brick and mortar schools we have struggle with that. Everyone in their own room with their own students. I do my best to talk to colleagues whenever I can and learn from them. #sstlap
A6: This acronym is awesome! Rejecting isolation is something that Twitter has helped a lot with. I was half the SS dept at my district and the only one teaching the 5 classes I taught. Isolation was constant - but twitter helped me connect and find a PLN! #sstlap

That is such a good point, Matt. When I taught f2f, only for about 1.5 of those years did I have my own room so I got a lot of interaction w/ other Ts as I shifted into & out of their rooms. LOL #sstlap

Q7:#YourSchoolRocks - All that exciting stuff happening IN your room can lead to great things OUT of your room too! How are you letting your community know about the AMAZING things going on with your students? #sstlap@McLane_Ryan & @Ericlowe21
A7) I have shared some of my Ss awesome responses on Twitter (w/ their permission) but need to be better about that. I LOVE seeing positive education stories so put them out there!!! #sstlap
A7: We're going to start class Twitter hashtags this year. I'm in a new district and I don't think they have a Twitter account or hashtag - that could be something I start up and to share out the awesomeness! #sstlap
Thanks for joining & if you don't already follow Jerry...DO! He's a living, breathing Twitter library of resources. Def the first person I encourage Educators to follow! #SSTLAP
A7) I want to be better about this. I do share stuff, but in a general way. We do have an AMAZING AV department that really does a great job of promoting our school through fun stuff like #BALipDub#SSTLAP

#sstlap thanks @STLinOK and @CHitch94 for hosting tonight. Last night of soccer for the season. Ended with a W. Thanks to all who jumped in to keep #sstlap going.
@Braz74 We may have been a lighter #sstlap crew tonight due to summer obligations, but I really loved meeting new folks & getting to pick brains (I must be an Edu Zombie - is that a thing?)!
Thanks @cybraryman1 for jumping into #sstlap always appreciate the work you do to chronicle resources and your willingness to share. I have learned a ton from you over the years. Thanks.
