Hello! I'm Krista from Iowa. There are so many great global heros, but anyone who works to get their message out there in order to bring change. #globaledchat
My global hero is... probably my mom. She taught me that it is possible to work while traveling, which completely changed how I saw my work and lifestyle possibilities as an adult. Sorry if that's a cop out answer #GlobalEdChat
I'm connecting from Bogotá, I'm the author of @globaledguide and my #globaled global hero is Nelson Mandela because being a part of ending apartheid in my youth, through boycotting and other activism, changed my view of what individual voices could do in concert. #globaledchat
I'm Michael Suiter, current student teacher who just passed edTPA. My Global Hero is Gandhi. Inspiring many other leaders of various nations to follow a method of peaceful protest #GlobalEdChat
A1: Global education to me means teaching about multiple perspectives in a way that is informative, respectful, and teaches tolerance/understanding. I expect students to model that respect and tolerance for perspectives different than their own #GlobalEdchat#sssvpln
Global Education means looking at other cultures celebrating the differences but showing how much we’re really alike. Students who are exposed to diversity are more empathetic & less bias #globaledchat
A1 For simplicity's sake and in my particularly #edtech context, I like defining global education as globally connected teaching and learning, but it's so much more. #Globaledchat
A1: Global education means for my students and I that the world is larger than just the rural Midwest. The world is truly interconnected and available right at our fingertips. #globaledchat#ssvpln
A1 Interestingly, when many people submit proposals for @GlobalEdCon, they are missing components that you all are mentioning. They think it's about general education. #Globaledchat
A1) Students often believe they understand the world because they are bombarded with information about it, but for me global education means restructuring the information students believe to be true about the world from the media and personal perspectives. #globaledchat
A1: #globaleducation is about equitable, asset-based relationships with people around the world, working collaboration to make life better in their communities. In my new school in Colombia, I hope my students think of it as feeling deeply & meaningfully connected. #globaledchat
A1 Knowing the location of countries is not the same as knowing about the countries ... #globaleducation is about understanding the world beyond the news sound bytes #globaledchat
A2: It's critical that we learn to respect and empathize with people who are different from us. #Edtech can help if you are in a more isolated area. Some examples are here: https://t.co/rEAO2xx9nt#globaledchat
I need to start blogging about how it's going here, but that means having time to think & write! It's an amazing, #pbl school: https://t.co/u0wtFFM980. We are always glad to accept visiting teachers who want to check out what we're doing and work in classrooms! #globaledchat
I think the term "global education" is vague and many educators are still new to the term "global competence". And I think education for all is also seen as synonymous with global education. It's part of it, but the whole... #globaledchat
A2: It is critical to cultivate, as the world is more connected now than ever before. I try to incorporate this perspective through the discussion of current events that aren't in the US, and recently introduced Non-Aligned Movement in discussion of Cold War #GlobalEdChat#ssvpln
A1 Perspective is all that an individual has to make decisions, so the wider, the more global, the better decision makers our students will be.
#GlobalEdChat#ssvpln
A2 I would love to have my kids to be able to view the world without being judgmental. However, right now I can't get them to see beyond Republican or Democrat ... we're working tho #globaledchat
A2: Our world is more connected and the problems are as well. There is a lot of diversity in my class, so I take opportunities to get them to talk about their culture. #GlobalEdChat
A2: The easiest (hardest?) way is living outside the country you grew up in. Right now, my life is almost pure Spanish, & I'm building new cultural competencies every minute. It's about walking together--that's why it matters. We're in this together. #globaledchat
A2) Even in areas with diversity, students may not be able to understand people who are different than themselves. Focusing on cultural values that are universal like family and love helps close the gap. #globaledchat
A2: The continued growth of globalization is making our world smaller everyday. Because of this we must understand others perspectives for a better future. We first need to help Ss understand this. #globaledchat
A2 It's important to help students develop a global perspective because, in order to solve problems affecting our globe, you have to curiosity about the world. #Globaledchat
A2: It is important to make sure students can feel connected with people around the world, so they can find communities that feel most comfortable to them & make educated decisions in the future. I do this using the internet, and programs like @ProjectZeroHGSE 's #globaledchat
A2: Too many reasons to put in a tweet! Diversity in our communities and the world, interconnectedness, the future of our planet and humanity depends on global solutions and empathy... #globaledchat
A2: Students need to realize that there are multiple perspectives in the world other than their own. It's important to foster critical thinking from an etic perspective so students can relate to and understand the world through different len's. #globaledchat#ssvlpn
A2: Sorry I’m late but global perspective is important because we are a global society. There is no way to be able to function in a silo anymore. We have to be willing to work with all cultures and all types of people to solve problems. #Globaledchat
A3: #socialimpact grows naturally out of connecting deeply with people who live differently or suffer a lack of rights. Our students are born empathetic; we just have to keep cultivating those connections so the empathy lasts. #globaled partnerships are key. #globaledchat
A3 Ingraining action into lesson planning is important, but also planning as a grade or a school to involved community action into daily life. Make action common, not extraordinary.
#GlobalEdChat#ssvpln
A2 Perspective is all that an individual has to make decisions, so the wider, the more global, the better decision makers our students will be.
#GlobalEdChat#ssvpln
A2.2: You build that global perspective through reading about other places, communicating across the globe, collaborating with people from all over and asking a lot of questions to gain insight and understanding. #Globaledchat
That's very true, which is part of why #globaled partnerships are so important--and quite manageable even in underfunded schools. Make a deep, real and humanizing connection across borders, and it changes everything. #globaledchat
I don't have much ability to, since I am often outside of the classroom doing my work... but when I'm teaching, I like to work together w/ students to create projects that will allow them to engage with their local communities. #globaledchat
A3) Sharing stories of young people throughout the world who have made an impact can be inspiring to students. Documentaries can be a great way to achieve this if students cannot interact virtually or in person.
https://t.co/V5CDjRHLWi#globaledchat
So right about students being born empathetic. Unfortunately that’s lost for most as they move through the school system. That’s why I️ love being a part of #GlobalEdChat. Seeing so many educators working toward this goal is inspiring!
A2: It is important to cultivate a global perspective because when you learn about others differences you will break down social barriers. A way I like to do this is in my classroom is to show my students videos, photos, and use stories. #globaledchat
A3: Students need to see that their actions can inspire change. Giving them tasks that allow them to follow their passion to make an impact is the only way to build a culture of social impact. #Globaledchat
A3 we really need to create opportunities for the kids to see that what they can make a difference ... their work matters too. They could change someone's life in another country #globaledchat
A3: Providing students real-life/contemporary examples of social action is important to allow students to see exactly how they can "Be the change they wish to see in the world" #globaledchat#ssvpln
A3: I think act local, think global is a great mantra to answer this question. We’ve had quite a few local service Learning projects inspired by global issues. #globaledchat
Our world is growing ever smaller! We can communicate across the globe in seconds and our ss have a myriad of opportunities to increase global and cultural competencies. I hope to foster more opportunities for ss/ts to connect globally through my work #GlobalEdChat
A2) It is imperative that Ss develop a global perspective b/c it takes understanding and depth to transition global initiatives from theory and discussion, to practice and action. #GlobalEdChat
A4: Teachers can inspire and empower students to be the change they want to be in the world. Global competence is a toolkit for real-world action. #globaledchat
A4: We can encourage our students to speak to and learn from people that come from different backgrounds and thought processes with an intent to listen for understanding. #globaledchat#ssvpln
A4: Today I saw a group of French 3 students using Google Hangouts to communicate with a student's French-speaking friend in Paris. Technology like this can help students form connections and commonalities with people across the globe #globaledchat#ssvpln
A4) Travel locally and internationally with a focus on interacting with people from other cultures. Volunteer with organizations that help settle refugees and teach new immigrants English. #globaledchat
A4: Some kids don't need encouragement, if they are living in communities where they can use their global skills (such as a place where everyone speaks a 2nd language) or... #globaledchat
A4 pt 2: ...if they have some other internal motivation to use those skills (such as talking to people around the world via an online chatroom) #globaledchat
A4.1: Bring in people who do extraordinary things. Give students opportunities to get involved in local or global initiatives. Help them see how their talents can be used to make a change. #globaledchat
A4: As with Q3, I've found that once students engage globally, they live globally-connected lives naturally. Most of my alums have taught abroad, gotten involved in international development work, or even just stayed home and made change in their own communities. #globaledchat
A3: I incorporate #globalcompetence to encourage #socialimpact in my classroom by having students be participants in service projects. They love making a difference and they learn by taking part in the process. #globaledchat
A4 I think we can encourage #globalskills skills beyond the classroom by making what we teach as relevant as possible and by creating as many content and skill connections as possible is key!
#GlobalEdChat#ssvpln
Mike, MD. EL LMS, Still figuring that out but anyone who works at adding global competence, conversation, or collaborative work in a meaningful way #globaledchat
A4: Plant many seeds! Encourage sts to think about study abroad early, tell them about related goings on in your area, suggest books, movies, tv shows from a target culture #globaledchat
When I grew up, I went to a school with mostly black and white students, but without, say, many latina or indian Ss #globaledchat It was constantly called "diverse"... but whether or not it really was is debatable.
A4: Some kids don't need encouragement, if they are living in communities where they can use their global skills (such as a place where everyone speaks a 2nd language) or... #globaledchat
A5: #globaledchat Sadly, I feel my district as well as many others do not have professional development programs with a global focus. This is a big need for us.
A5: Our School is prompting personalized and project based learning this year with a focus on critical thinking. Not specific global ed but certainly can lead to that depending on student interest. #globaledchat
A4: Teachers can encourage students to use their #globalskills and #interculturalskills beyond the classroom by participating in community projects with friends and family. #globaledchat
A5: Unable to answer this, as I am traveling-- but it's about time for me to leave anyway :) Thank you all for an informative and fascinating chat! I love being able to discuss these issues with others #globaledchat
A4: My Ss are very sheltered because their families have money, so I spend time trying to educate them about what other ppl go through... #GlobalEdChat
True - we are still constrained by time! I work daily with colleagues in China and Turkey - it is an obstacle but we manage to make it work. How can we do that with students....? Video messages are a start! #GlobalEdChat
A5) Unfortunately this is still an area of need for many schools. I have reached out to find my own opportunities like the University of Iowa's Global Education Institute for Teachers #globaledchat
That’s true. But also helping them recognize how to take that beyond their school community is important. We have a lot of refugees, immigrants & first generation Ss who still need support in figuring out how to go global in their initiatives. #globaledchat
A4: For example, I spent some time in the Amazon doing volunteer work, so I have talked to them about life there. It is in Brazil but it is a world they know nothing about. #GlobalEdChat
Yes-- even when talking about an international school, I'm curious about the socio-economic diversity there. I don't know enough about international schools myself #globaledchat
A5: My school has made it a requirement for Ss to do community service. I have a group that I work with as a mentor and help 5 Ss connect with an NGO. #GlobalEdChat
Several years back my G/T students participated in the In Our Global Village project. What an experience and incorporated so many "core" skills while fostering global perspective! https://t.co/1HbFWADn0R#GlobalEdChat
A5: As a student teacher it is difficult to know the direction of where my placement school will be going as my time there is coming to a close (far too soon!) But my school has provided workshops to familiarize teachers with the increasing diversity in the district #GlobalEdChat
#vted Invited children to create 3D shapes with different materials... Asked what if.... Amazing at what 5 and 6 year old children want to know! Sharing our ideas with friends in Hong Kong. @mdmhk#globaledchat
A5: The Globally Competent Learning Continuum is a free @ASCD tool for Ts to self-reflect on their global competence journey and find resources to help them improve https://t.co/qKtAoWERxf#globaledchat
A5: We participate in a teacher exchange program with other countries. Recently we had educators from China come learn about our school and we have sent educators to visit their schools to learn about best practices. Knowledge is power! #globaledchat
It's been my biggest challenge so far. I hope to change it through scholarships and visiting student/teacher programs, but it's not going to be easy. #globaledchat
Check out @levelupvillage. I was impressed with their offerings. I need to do a little planning but am looking forward to trying them out #GlobalEdChat

@jdeborahklein, @faria_lila, @mr_hayes, @LevelUpVillage
Yes! Emphasis on the some. I don't know how to go about non-intrinsic motivational lessons, but maybe there is a way to connect these Ss to situations that will both allow them to feel safe and connect to more people like themselves? #globaledchat
A5: We participate in a teacher exchange program with other countries. Recently we had educators from China come learn about our school and we have sent educators to visit their schools to learn about best practices. Knowledge is power! #globaledchat
A6: Resources I recommend to integrate intercultural understanding and encourage social action are having students participate in global learning projects. Check out @iEARNUSA#globaledchat
A6: As one who conducts training internationally on character education, I have found that values, attributes and beliefs are universal with often a desire to have an impact beyond one's class or school. #globaledchat
A6: I always love @facinghistory and @WEMovement for resources and PD for social action, the @ihmec for PD, and small/local/global orgs like @ablfk_ghana for their insight & involvement in helping Ss make a difference. #globaledchat
A6 Have Ss do a Walk for Water and raise $ and AWARENESS for the global water and sanitation crisis. Ss feel empowered through social action! #globaledchat
A4) If we desire Ss to own and seamlessly use global skills, then Ss must be immersed in Global PBL Projects that utilize Personalized Learning Techniques. Ss need to own the process by experiencing and publishing their learning journey. #GlobalEdChat
Sorry but I have to go early, #globaledchat. Heading to the airport to pick up #globaled superstar @IBPBLJill for a week of deep #pbl work w/ my teachers--and a few beach days in Cartagena! Thanks to moderators & participants; great conversations! #globaledchat@globaledguide
A5: We participate in a teacher exchange program with other countries. Recently we had educators from China come learn about our school and we have sent educators to visit their schools to learn about best practices. Knowledge is power! #globaledchat
A6: Like I've mentioned before, incorporating current events from outside the US helps encourage students' understanding of intercultural issues. GlobalEdChat is giving me more resources to look into as I think about preparing for my own class #GlobalEdChat#ssvpln
It was actually unintentional. We do a global exchange w/ Ss in #SriLanka & when we went to visit them, we were able to go to their school w/ them & talk to the Ts! So I would like to do a more formal one at some point in my life #GlobalEdChat
I wasn’t able to make it but my school had a community Thanksgiving for refugees the other night. This helped to connect a variety of people from in and outside the community. https://t.co/daPacGvpgn#globaledchat
A6: For lang tchrs, Hathi Trust has some materials in world languages, it is free but you have to dig thru it. Social media that is popular in other countries too, WeChat, LINE, WeiBo, can b used to learn about other cultures #globaledchat
A6: My focus is a little different. I don’t have to go far to find needs. There are favelas close by. The opportunities to help are endless. #globaledchat
It also helps to get past the very Americentric view that so many have. Watching or listening to other country’s news is so important to get outside of our bubble. #globaledchat
A7: I'll keep hosting #globaledchat and the Global Learning blog. If anyone is interested in hosting a future #Globaledchat or contributing to the blog, let me know!
A7: I think that I will use @Flipgrid with my students to talk about global issues. I think it will spark social action. Flipgrid is an amazing video response tool. #globaledchat
A7: I will keep working with Ss to help them find their passions and take action. That has been my classroom motto for years and it works for so may different areas of my work. #globaledchat
A7: This year my hope is to take part in 3 global learning projects created by others, start my own GLP, we participated in Trick-or-Treat for @UNICEF, and I would love to do a fundraiser to help others in another part of the world. #oneworld#globaledchat
Thanks for believing in me! It's been a fabulous ride! It has really filled my bucket! Def a career not a job! I still love going to work every day! #globaledchat
A7: I'll keep doing my international current events and include global perspectives in my US History class, which often get left out. Teaching civics to students can help them understand what they can do as individuals to affect larger change #GlobalEdChat#ssvpln
