A2- our community is very small, so it’s easy to know parents by their first name and even who their teacher is. I see patents of previous students around and I am sure to connect with them with more than just a hi. I ask about how their activities (soccer etc) are #LeadLAP

A2: I worked in customer service while in college, so I feel compelled to greet each visitor in a friendly way with eye contact & a smile. It’s the least we can do, but the message it sends to visitors is H-U-G-E!
#LeadLAP
I have to second this sentiment Jay!! Love @wenders88, she is amazing!! Love that @TaraMartinEDU joined the @dbc_inc team--the four of them together are a powerhouse that never disappoints! #LeadLAP

A1: I loved when I worked for an organization that used to encourage research and reading at work. They set aside time for reading and refecting together. This effort exceeded my expectations. #LeadLAP
A2: In my classroom, I have a Student Ambassador! This student greets our visitors w/ a handshake & introduces themselves. The S then proceeds to engage our guest, informing what we’re doing in class, and welcoming them in. We focus on @adamdovico S.P.E.C.I.A.L.! #LeadLAP
A2: First impressions are everything, especially when you are greeting others. Shake their hand, smile, and most importantly, know their names
and who they are.
Knowing names—both what they are and how to pronounce them is key, especially with so many blended families. #LeadLAP
We have a TV in our front entryway that we have pictures of the students scrolling. If people have to wait, they have something to watch and we get to showcase our amazing Ts & Ss! #LeadLAP
Even BEFORE people walk through the doors, they can be welcomed with signage and a clean campus. Our office staff is AMAZING at making people feel welcome! #LeadLAP
A2: We've transformed entrance to our school w/emphasis on S created art. Collage art from Ss hang over windows, origami around office windows & just added 20th anniv. handprint mural. Trying to send message that S creativity is valued here, part of #ROYALhabits#LeadLAP
Thank you @united for getting Greg to his mom. This kind of going above & beyond really matters. Greg, I'm glad you were surrounded by good people w caring hearts during that time. #LeadLAP
A1: I was trying to get back east before my mom passed away and got stranded in an airport. @united went above and beyond. But more than anything, they just showed that they cared. #LeadLAP
A2:create a welcoming atmosphere. Schools are busy places and front offices can be hectic/chaotic at times. A smile and calm demeanor can do wonders for a first impression. Be warm and welcoming. #leadlap
A2: The four secretaries that I get to work with at the two elementary schools where I spend my days are INCREDIBLE. They are ambassadors of positivity and encouragement. They make everyone feel welcome. They’re PIRATES, too! #LeadLAP

In my experience you know what the culture of the school exudes as soon as you open the door. In my last school ALL students K-6 took the leading welcoming visitors #LeadLAP
A3: Being able to share information out in numerous ways. I think the best thing is making learning visible. Twitter has allowed Ts to show this to our parents & greater community! #LeadLAP
Absolutely!! They are our special VIP guests!! ❤️❤️ We must welcome ALL into our school community because we want to leave an everlasting imprint on their heart ❤️ #LeadLAP@burgess_shelley@BethHouf
A3: Try to meet the where they are. Email them weekly @SmorePages newletters with pictures and video. Also put it on FB to make sure everyone knows what is going on in our schools. I tweet and FB daily from classrooms #LeadLAP

A3: one thing is setting up a team for fast responses. A reply after traditional business hours goes a long way. Don’t need to be 24/7 but a lot happens from 3:30pm-9pm.
#LeadLAP
A3. We use SM as ways for students to create videos about their learning experiences and then send to parents. Seeing and hearing the student experience is powerful. #leadlap
A3 the program that I am principal primarily uses sm in an extremely positive manner. The truth is my director has been modeling to me the power of it. #leadlap
A2: Our front office ladies are AMAZING! Consistently trying to improve processes for efficiency. Always giving a smile and being helpful. We have books in the front for children to read while waiting and a TV that shows tweets from the district and NCISD events. #LeadLap

A2: When people come on campus and don't know how to get somewhere, don't just give directions. Walk them to where they need to go and engage in conversation. #LeadLAP
Our district has an intentional plan to communicate with frequency and regularly. Social media is our newspaper and the stories (posts, blogs, newsletters, etc) of our district are shared on multiple platforms to reach all. #LEADLAP
A3. There are educators like @KymHarjes who tweet out what her students are busy learning each day on Twitter. Wonderful way to involve families. #LeadLAP
A3: Mrs. Crouse does an outstanding job running our social media accounts at @MMSMustangs14! She keeps the posts positive & informative! So thankful for her! #LeadLAP
A2- GM! Creating a culture that you would expect to see when you visit your own children's school is important. There are never too many Good morning's, Have you been helped already? or How can I help you? to make parents feel good. #leadLAP@mreruchie
Vernon, I believe we need to do this in life, with every person we interact with, every day. This is how we change the world for the better. Thank you for your work. #leadlap
A3: It’s important to stay up-to-date with communication. I operate our school’s social media accounts but that’s only reaching a certain audience. We use Remind, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. We have to remember that good ole’ flyers home still reach an audience. #LeadLAP
A3. Working on that. Currently teaching a Social Media Marketing class. Having students create a Marketing Campaign for my colleagues, hoping to exceed their expectations:)
#LeadLAP
A3: I tell our story every chance I get. If you don’t, someone else will do it for you. Feel free to follow Los Lunas High School!
Facebook: Los Lunas HS Tigers
Twitter/Instagram: @LLHSPrincipal#leadlap

A3: We share out the positives on a daily basis via Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Our teachers use things like ClassDojo to share things going on within the classroom. #LeadLAP
A3: Our parents want to be part of telling the story. On our Facebook posts we ask for parents to share pictures and stories as well in the replies. Great to get multiple perspectives. #LeadLAP
This is key...Over the years I've worked with parents that felt for various reasons they were not being listened to, and then their paths crossed mine. One of the things I've learned over the years is that people want, need, and crave reassurance. #LeadLAP
A3: Try to meet the where they are. Email them weekly @SmorePages newletters with pictures and video. Also put it on FB to make sure everyone knows what is going on in our schools. I tweet and FB daily from classrooms #LeadLAP
A2 Similar to my fav car dealership,
I welcome them by name,
reassure concerns,
show them things that give them confidence about the future,
chat w/ Ss passing by,
inspire them w/ engaging lrng on the way to the clsrm
where the real 💜 of our sch is! #LeadLAP
A3: Whether you are with your colleagues, parents, visitors, or MOST IMPORTANTLY students, always #BePresent#BePresent#BePresent Put the paper and/or phone DOWN, make eye contact, and SINCERELY listen with OPEN ears and a mindful brain #LeadLAP@BethHouf@burgess_shelley
A2- GM! Creating a culture that you would expect to see when you visit your own children's school is important. There are never too many Good morning's, Have you been helped already? or How can I help you? to make parents feel good. #leadLAP@mreruchie
#LeadLAP A3: Need to meet parents and community where they are at with communication! Newsletters, Facebook, Twitter, readerboard, text, email, face to face...gotta hit em all! https://t.co/j0wRL5aAAN
Love this! Our campus is huge! Our own teachers sometimes say that there is a whole other #BeRoyal world on the other half of the campus. It's important that others realize this and offer to help visitors and others get to where they need to go. Personalized touch! #LeadLAP
Something I’ve been chewing on- social media as more than marketing; building an engaged digital community is potentially more impactful #LeadLAP check out @josieahlquist for a lot of great ideas on this
A3: Also love the power of Facebook Live to let our families see school in real time. Often there is a perception of what is going on inside the building that isn't always accurate. #LeadLAP
A2: To me exceeding expectations of visitors is just to keep doing the task you are doing with full focus. Everyone deserves our focus and sometimes visitors can be a distraction. If the visitor is supposed to be our focus this would change to fully involve them. #LeadLAP
Q3 social media messaging is a team effort. It takes superintendents, central office leaders, campus leaders, tech leaders, teacher leaders and office leaders working together to ensure that our school’s complete story is told #LeadLAP
"...in a parent's home language" What a great way to show cultural awareness and relevance simply by being responsive to how parents wish to communicate with us. #LeadLAP
A3: We use twitter with our school hashtag #LMSPATS and with our entire district we use #TeamDCS to share all the awesome things going on in our own school and all the schools across the county. #leadlap
A3: I ❤️ being able to communicate & share what’s happening in our classroom via SM!! Ps have commented on how special it is for them to get to see what’s going on each day & they love all the pictures! Ps can engage Ss in convos about what they see we did that day! #LeadLAP
A3: I always have a bunch of things going on so when I am needed, I put down my phone, close my computer, take out my headphones, & put away the DBC book that I'm reading. So that I can be fully present when someone needs my attention, help, support. #LeadLAP
A3: Our parents want to be part of telling the story. On our Facebook posts we ask for parents to share pictures and stories as well in the replies. Great to get multiple perspectives. #LeadLAP
A3: I remember that an email, a post, or a text; does NOT replace a face to face conversation. I always attempt to have those meetings in person to avoid any breakdowns or miscommunications. #LeadLAP
A3 Honestly, this is an area where I need to improve! I seem to go in spurts and need to be more consistent. You can never communicate enough! #LeadLAP#underperforming#committed
A3. I like this one from https://t.co/GmbosPMIAH as it spans the spectrum of participation levels. Starting with watching and moving to producing. #LeadLAP
Something I’ve been chewing on- social media as more than marketing; building an engaged digital community is potentially more impactful #LeadLAP check out @josieahlquist for a lot of great ideas on this
A3: I use @Seesaw as my primary tool to communicate with families. I letbour communications department know when something is going on so it can be included on the district Facebook page. My principal snaps pics and tweets them out with distric hashtags. #leadlap
Social media is where our families are everyday! Using it to communicate just makes sense. I want to exceed expectations by encouraging teachers to share what’s going on in their classrooms! #leadlap
A3: In this day and age, there are so many ways we can connect with staff and families, and we can do most from our phones:
📲 Phone call
📲 Text
📲 Remind
📲 E-mail
📲 Twitter
📲 Instagram
📲 Facebook
📝 Newsletters
📝 Handwritten notes
🗣 Face-to-face conversations
#LeadLAP
A3: Our team at #FMSTeach is amazing! Our staff tweets from the school all day, @EricaJHogan and I copy to Facebook and Instagram. Our stuco uses Snapchat for announcements. #LeadLAP
A3: We post a #GoodNewsCalloftheDay everyday on FB & our Students of the Week every Friday. We send home a paper copy of our weekly bulletin so ALL families have it, but post it & text it out, too. We make sure we always celebrate the +, because there’s so much +. #LeadLAP
A3: Social Media has allowed me to reach all parents. My parents were tagged in photos of their child’s schoolwork and conferences were made via Messenger (many parents changed #s occasionally- but messenger stayed the same!). #LeadLAP
A3. How about this idea to get the youngest students in your school involved? They can add their Twitter ideas to have shared out into the box. LOVE this idea!! #LeadLAP
Good morning #LeadLAP! Nili Bartley from MA trying to jump on for a few-A3 I started using Instagram to reach my middle schoolers, families, & community-I take tons of pics of the amazing learning I see & post a video of those pics on Fridays using @Quik_App -so much fun:)
A3. How about this idea to get the youngest students in your school involved? They can add their Twitter ideas to have shared out into the box. LOVE this idea!! #LeadLAP
A3: I think sharing the good that is happening daily is important! We share through FB & Twitter the good happening in the classrooms and on campus daily. We send a monthly newsletter to parents, have a marquee to announce reminders and update our website continually. #LeadLap
Try to put time in your calendar where that 30 minutes is set aside to communicate with families. If you don’t have any students struggling, it’s a great time to send a message of praise. #LeadLAP
A4: The more we can make it student centred the better. I think Ss and Ps are always excited when we provide so much choice for students. Listening to them & their interests is important for relationship building. #LeadLAP
A4: We have afterschool clubs, teach 3rd graders chess, and have many extra events offered by the PTO that enhance our students' experiences. #tlap#LeadLAP
A3: We use twitter to share what's happening in the school and classrooms, and we live stream concerts. Our twitter account is on our webpage so families who do not use twitter can simply go to our website. #LeadLAP
A1: continued, social media allowed me to invited the public into my classroom. The parents that were timid to visit the classroom no longer had to feel timid to visit. The parent that always got THAT phone call now received positive calls and instant check ins were made #LeadLAP
A3. @aaron_hogan shared the perfect idea for encouraging more educators in your building to tweet out each day.
Would this work at your school? #LeadLAP
This is a beautiful way of committing to the work. It's also important to keep cultural responsive pedagogy present in our thinking about education. #leadlap
A4. We strive to make the academic experiences as rigorous and relevant as possible. We invite in professionals and have our kids present to authentic audiences. #leadlap
A3: Work in progress for us. With ideas from #LeadLAP workshop in Lexington, KY we have ramped up our Twitter presence with #BeRoyal Golden Hashtag contest with Ts with great results. Parents run our Facebook pages & we contribute. Changed to using S'more for newsletters.
A3) Our school uses @BloomzApp to communicate and send pics. Really easy way to share what’s going on at the school with photos and notifications. #LeadLAP
A4 This actually makes me think of all the extra curricular activities we offer at our K-5 school. Ts offer such a variety that involve academic, physical, creative, technological options and more. We definitely make sure there is a place for every student. #LeadLAP
A4: I am in a unique position where I get to provide both Ss & Ts w/ academic experiences. Mon, I get to play board games with Ts & have discussions about how to incorporate them into their classroom, giving their Ss amazing experiences while learning! #LeadLAP
#LEADLAP if you do not have the culture, if you are not having FUN, if there is no "bye in" organization by in, you are “dead in the water”! Kids, everyone, suffers and never reaches their potential!
A4: We work with our local universities to provide opportunities for students to earn college credit in several courses, including a nurse’s assistant program and welding. We can’t be all things to all people, but that doesn’t mean we won’t try. #leadlap
A4. Toss out those silly cabinets in your hallways that are housing items that need to be tossed and create reading nooks that speak to your school's focus on literacy. #LeadLAP
A4: This year there was a need for students to “lead”; so many experiences involves our scholars taking the helm of activities and social events. Always ask: “Are students being heard & seen?” #LeadLAP
A4: It’d be pretty cool at the middle school level to offer diff variations of core classes instead of your typical 7th grade ELA... i.e. Graphic Novels, Poetry, Mythology, etc. #LeadLAP
A1: ordered catering from a local bakery; they arrived early to deliver & set up; one man, wheeled everything in on a cart; set it up; twice as much food as expected, yummy, arrived at the end of the day to clean up; bowls were “to go”, very lil clean up; positive #LeadLAP
Listen to community needs local and global, team with educators, kids and families to provide opportunities both flexible and scaffolded in intentional ways #leadlap
A4 I think one way to do this is leave no stone unturned or no staff member unused when it comes to having programs and plans that help support kids in all areas they need. Always looking for new ways to do this as well #LeadLAP
Depending on your students age...with high school, I have found that local businesses are willing to host interns who can support them w their social media game. We worked with @FBISanDiego as well!!! #leadlap
Sooo excited that we're able to provide a space camp simulation experience for our kiddos thanks to some generous grants and administrative support! #LeadLAP
Love this! What a great way to show and communicate the school's mission, vision, and everyday impact on student learning by using a TV. Let's also remember that many of us are visual learners and using the TV tailors that communication to our primary learning style. #LeadLAP

A3 We invite Ps in often! Our blog posts are full of pictures of the Ss doing the actual work (always sent on Wednesdays.) I've moved to "blogging formatting" to make it easier for Ps to check by phone. I called every P for a positive call in first 3 weeks of school. #LeadLAP
A4. Reading nooks can be created in all sorts of spaces.
First, we have to promote literacy and be certain students leave to attend MS as strong readers. #LeadLAP
A4 Sometimes we invite special guests to work in our classrooms with Ss and Ts. Two weeks ago we were lucky enough to have @mraspinall join us. The Ss and Ts were so excited and engaged in their learning. #LeadLAP
This is key...Over the years I've worked with parents that felt for various reasons they were not being listened to, and then their paths crossed mine. One of the things I've learned over the years is that people want, need, and crave reassurance. #LeadLAP
I recently held an optional tech PD opportunity for Ts. I was so happy that Ts showed up even though they didn’t have to because they want to learn for their students. They definitely exceeded my expectations because I know they’re busy, but they chose to come! #leadlap
A4: Leading career readiness & CTE for juvenile court & community schools...I seek out grants to build career exploration & pathways that expose our most deserving youth w real career opportunities. We offer paid internships, industry certification. #LeadLAP
A4:Reflecting on learning exp. for Ts & Ss.Ts are in control of their PD based on their professional learning goal choice. For Ss-we are looking closely at what we are doing&the WHY. Is it b/c we’ve always done it?Is it for”the test” or is it BEST practice for kids? #LeadLAP

When I was a campus administrator, I stressed this to my custodial staff daily, and we came together to realize how we could visually engage our community through the appearance of our campus even from the parking lot to the school. #LeadLAP
A3 I think replying to inquiries after hours let’s people know you care about their situations—even when they don’t happen from 8 am-3:30 pm.
I used Voxer for the coaches & teachers I served, email & sometimes, the situation called for a phone call or a house visit. #LeadLAP
A4: I teach kindergarten. For some it’s their first formal school experience as a student or as a parent. It’s impt to build a strong foundation to know learning is fun, but can be hard. We can do hard things. Clear and consistent communication w/Ps - paramount!! #leadlap
A4: Leading career readiness & CTE for juvenile court & community schools...I seek out grants to build career exploration & pathways that expose our most deserving youth w real career opportunities. We offer paid internships, industry certification. #LeadLAP
A3: Although I'm a huge fan of social media I still speak with parents through FTF conversation. Today we can use @skype or @GoogleHangout. I can't wait to use the @flipgrid guest mode with parents! I would love to develop social media use within our district. #LEADLap
This is key...Over the years I've worked with parents that felt for various reasons they were not being listened to, and then their paths crossed mine. One of the things I've learned over the years is that people want, need, and crave reassurance. #LeadLAP
A4: Many times the programs that really connect students to school are not the "tested" ones. Supporting the arts, extracurriculars, and CTE type programs is important. I wrote it about here: Where Does Excellence Hide at Your School: https://t.co/zxgGOpVZlf#LeadLAP#tlap
A4: Willing to explore new ideas, not afraid to try, but need to remain focused on what is best for kids. Teacher support in this is critical - STEAM Labs, #GeniusHour, What I Need classes, all feel risky, trust Ts & be active in what is needed to make these a success! #LeadLAP
Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes. I cannot even put "yes" enough to this. Fear and self-doubt does all kinds of things to us & even just a little reassurance can make all the difference in the world! Thank you for bringing this up @Carlameyrink@thewrightleader & @JennMBarnes! #LeadLAP

A3. Has your school shared a document like this one with families and community businesses/members? I believe I still have the template if you're interested. DM me :-) #LeadLAP
A4: Within my classroom, I look for ways to engage my Ss in hands-on learning experiences that help create lasting learning! This includes adding a little “magic” or using a good pirate hook to transform the experience for my Ss! #LeadLAP
Heard from a school principal that because one of our students had certification, once released from detention, got a job making $2 more/hour . Those $2 more changes lives. #LeadLAP
A4) We get to become even more creative during our summer session (year round school) so we have enjoyed cooking, coding, creative writing, theater! Loads of fun, has helped me teach better this year too! #LeadLAP
The first paradigm shift for some is to realize that social media is the primary platform of communication for many parents. We can either be defensive and wait to react or be responsive and shape our communication to what's best for kids and the community. #LeadLAP
A5: Creating spots where students want to work out of their classrooms is exciting. I really love when our Ts have students show their learning & work outside the building! #LeadLAP
A5 tough question. It’s not always easy with a minimal budget and staff, but if you model pitching and helping out your staff will follow. Picking up a broom has never hurt anyone. #LeadLAP
A5: I try to cultivate a place where I want my kids to go to school. People, staff, teachers, community, and all things associated with the entire school. Huge challenge but that's the goal.
#LeadLAP
A4: we also have a house system this year... so much more positive than “move your clip!” Kids are working as a team across grade levels & lifting each other up! #LeadLAP
A4 this yr I started every class telling Ss I only want to build lessons with them I’d be inspired to do myself. This commitment has carried me to reaching new levels of engagement w/connection, PBL, digital creation, & most certainly w/sharing our passions. #LeadLAP
A4: We made the decision a few years ago that our release teacher should run our STEAM Lab, MakerSpace, @ School Garden. They’ve become the ❤️ of our school. They give ALL students the chance to create & see themselves as creative. Mad props to @nanwill6 for making it! #LeadLAP
I have figured out the sure fire way to never argue...

2. When you’re not right say to the other person, “oh, you’re right, let’s do it your way.”
3. Repeat

A5. We must have a “visionary leadership” and think what kids need next yr, in 2 yrs etc...We did a Design Challenge with our kids in previous years to create a Maker Space. Awesome for kids! #leadlap
A4 We follow the lead of the children. When they pose ?s abt engaging topics & brainstorm ideas for how to lrn, we do it! When Ss & Ts co-create curr, we're all more engaged, research, rd more, lrn new things. Our lrng takes on a life of its own - & it's never the same! #LeadLAP

A5: One simple thing we did was remove all posted signs that focused on what students and parents were not allowed to do. Everything we posted back up used positive language. How we say things matters. #LeadLAP
A5 Over the past few years we have worked with a fabulous artist who does mosaic tiling. She helped our Ss and Ts create mosaic benches in the front and back of our school. She also helped turn our school mission statement into a mosaic at the front of the school too. #LeadLAP
A5: this is definitely an area where I want to improve. It’s definitely something I put off, but I do think students, teachers, and families appreciate it! #leadlap
A3. How about this Back to School Twitter Challenge? Couldn't it just as easily be Start the New Year Off with Twitter? #B2SBlitz shared the idea. Run with it!! #LeadLAP
A5: This year we wanted to exceed expectations by creating a positive space for staff so we made over the teacher's cafe. And we change the decor with the season. #LeadLAP
#LEADLAP Schools need to help students (and their parents) discern “passion and professions” It is GREAT if they are one and the same. Sometimes you need to have a profession so you can do your passion!
A5: Our school just pulled up a bunch of overgrown bushes and cleaned up the entrance -it made a huge difference in the first impression of our school! It feel so much more welcoming now! I love the images of Ss that surround you when you walk in, too! *Looking for pics* #LeadLAP
Our Principal takes great pride in improving our facilities each year. Ts even joke with him about all his signs and statues, but it really shows pride in our school. We also have a hall of fame that showcases what the kids accomplish and I kinda like it:)
#LeadLAP
Partnering with universities, community colleges, community based organizations, and business is exactly how we provide our students w all they need...critical thinking, healing, opportunity, exposure, community #LeadLAP
A4: We work with our local universities to provide opportunities for students to earn college credit in several courses, including a nurse’s assistant program and welding. We can’t be all things to all people, but that doesn’t mean we won’t try. #leadlap
A5: Been blessed with $ for large pieces like indoor turf field/studios/performance classes ... but the real exceeding expectations comes with what we can do with the "normal" to make classrooms and common spaces exciting for ALL students, everywhere, ALL the time. #LeadLap
A3: Meet parents & community where they are at! Use multiple social medium platforms to reach a diverse group! Use teacher leaders, students leaders, admin to tell the schools story, positively! To communicate events, schedules, etc! @ParentSquare is used in my district #LeadLAP
A5: Our crew is amazing! The pride they have in our facility (& grounds) is so evident. Our teachers have that same level of pride within their learning spaces. Student artwork is all over the hallways which makes the boring halls beautiful & inviting. #LeadLAP

A5: working w/custodians to make sure our school is clean. Ss deserve this. As a new principal, I’ve looked through a different lens when it comes to this. Our awesome maintenance dept.cleared bushes, shrubs, trimmed trees, etc. Much better 1st impression! #LeadLAP
Love the ownership of the culture through student work. I saw this firsthand at a PBL school I worked at. Two students new to the school were about to fight, and one of our students looked at both of them and said, "We don't do that here." Fight over..Culture Won..#LeadLAP
A5 Recently, I had a lot of fun decorating our conference room/PLC room to make it a homey, inspirational space where we can focus on kids and learning. I need to take pics! #LeadLAP
A4: We have started Genius Hour this year and offer programs/events involving our community and PTO as much as possible. Literacy nights, Math & Science nights, Dual language and GT showcases, musical performances, field day. #LeadLap
A5: Our school @KirkElementary is almost 20 years old, but it has transformed in the past 4 years when @O_L_Mayers became our principal and we implemented #blendedlearning. I’m a bit partial to our #TLAP classroom this year which includes #flexseating including a boat!🚢 #LeadLAP
I like that the environment is welcoming! Our parents walk through a “gate”, it’s outside; I’m thinking, how can we decorate this better for parents & students? #LeadLAP
A5: Our custodial crew does a great job - and we reinforce it by ensuring that we have our students clean up after themselves in common areas. We also have student work everywhere to try to reinforce that the school belongs to them-not us! #leadlap
A5: Also, if I see something that needs to be done, I do it. We send a powerful message if we are walking the halls and just step over trash/ignore something broken/etc. #pride#leadlap
A5 With our newest grant, we have built learning pockets per gr level in all of our Lawrence schools—many of them have tall windows, beautiful colors &all of them have flexible seating. These spaces provide a place for Ss to learn outside the classroom. They are amazing. #LeadLAP
A5. 🤚 Raise your hand if you think this "over the moon" idea is something you would like to start at your school! 🏫
This is one of my favorites!! #LeadLAP
I agree! One thing we do with our Ss who are leaving the school is have them all put a painted handprint on the ceiling tile with their final year written on it. The tiles are at the entrance of the school. They look great coming in and Ss often come back looking for theirs.
A5b here is a picture of one of our latest murals done by STUCO members who were also in art club they included several members from a variety of classes #LeadLAP
A5: At beg. of the year we share pics of learning environments in our school memo to inspire Ts to get creative in their learning environments, use flexible seating, decorate, etc. Currently in memo, sharing pics of T work displays, ways to recognize S growth #LeadLAP
A5: I want my classroom to be a safe & encouraging environment for my Ss! Positive words cover my walls, bright colors, flexible seating, and music fill our space!! It’s our home!! #LeadLAP
A6: Being available to my staff outside of school (within reason)! If someone texts me after school or on weekends, I know something is important to them. I want them to know it's important to me too. Communication is so key. #LeadLAP
A5: To exceed expectations, it takes a community effort. It takes everyone. This summer, families, staff, Rotary, and high school students came out to help spruce up our school. It was amazing! #LeadLAP
Absolutely! Every graduate school program should have an enhanced emphasis on this skill as part of the formal coursework and also the practicum. Great point! #LeadLAP
A6: Social media, returning phone calls and emails, attending student games and performances ... The day doesn’t end at 2:30. The job can’t either. #leadlap
A6. I wrote a grant once that included a month of field trips during the summer to all of the historic places within a day's drive. Students had experiences they will always remember. #LeadLAP
A6 model the behaviors outside of school that you expect inside the school. This is especially important in small communities. I rarely go to town and not see a few of my students. #LeadLAP
A5: I want my classroom to be a safe & encouraging environment for my Ss! Positive words cover my walls, bright colors, flexible seating, and music fill our space!! It’s our home!! #LeadLAP
#LEADLAP it seems we educators get so hung up on the “dance” (doing it right) that We don't not hear the music (education and empowering kids)!! Need to refocus / reboot?
A5: Working at "low-income" schools...there always seems to be some mess physically falling apart right around the corner. Put on those gloves, grab a mop & together w staff, students, parents & community do the work to keep space clean & safe. #LeadLAP
A6: I facilitate 8 different clubs before and after school. I love this informal time with Ss, getting to know them "outside of school". I'm super proud of each group & how self-sufficient they are. It's all about building leadership capacity in Ss! #LeadLAP
A5: Principals must pick up trash, sweep, mow, pull weeds..kids have to see that we will do these tasks. It’s up to ALL of us to keep our school clean! I now have kids picking up trash and cleaning up messes that aren’t theirs. Model what you expect to see in others! #LeadLAP
I try to be available for families outside of the school day. I give them my cell number and let them know it’s okay to call or text me anytime! #leadlap
A6: We are doing our first skype on Thursday with Jian an - A sister school in China - This will be our 3rd graders first experience with anything like this. Looking forward to it #LeadLAP
Absolutely you're right Carla! When I was in an instructional role as an administrative intern years ago, I realized that coaching on the pedagogy was one thing, but coaching through the "lens" of reassurance was quite another. Both are essential to effective coaching. #LeadLAP
A6: Staying on top of my own professional growth is important. Being visible to parents, students, and staff at events and in the community is also a good way to build relationships. #LEADLAP
A5- My classroom was and my office and the PD libraries are now places that are well taken care of so that people (Ps, Ss and Ts) see that I take pride in my space as well as those that I care about. #LeadLAP
Also, gotta hold either District or building owners (if Charter School) accountable for keeping schools in good repair. I've seen some disgusting conditions. Our kids need us to fight for healthy school buildings. #LeadLAP
A5: my Ss know our classroom expectations for keeping our room and school clean, neat and tidy. We work to help our custodian to do his job, not cleaning up a mess that adds to his already hard job. #leadlap

A6: We have a district wide committee working on Equity that is community based. Much of the work happens outside school hours because it is important for what happens inside school hours #LeadLAP
A4: our school just increased #cte courses that are very popular & pathways! I still think Ss should be surveyed regularly! Ss decide courses based on friends, who teaches it, what they’ve heard, etc #LeadLAP true marketing on courses & true signups should dictate what’s offered
Absolutely! Now that I'm older, I realize people truly need reassurance about their littles, their rdg abilities, the types of work we do, everything! When they know we're on the same team w/ their child at the center, they can finally relax & join in the lrng, too! #LeadLAP

A6 Going to Ss events outside of school hours can be a great way to build relationship with Ss and their family. I also think that within reason, replying back to parents during non-school hours can be helpful. I also love @JayBilly2 books he reads online. #LeadLAP
A5: Pride of ownership reinforces the efforts of all, esp. those who may not have the strongest voices or the highest profiles. I agree strongly w/ Jay. We must find multiple avenues for our Ss to gain a beam of the spotlight. "Find the good, & praise it." Alex Haley #LeadLAP
A5: The one thing I like is when the kids paint the walls, their work fills our school. When they can walk through and say, "I did that!" That means a lot. #LeadLAP

A6: Leading a “Future Leaders” & Eagle Ambassador club with @MVESgoalgetters after school! Also, communicating w/families & staff happens a lot outside of the school day. Working w/ leadership team to brainstorm ideas.Started home visits this year for my K families. #LeadLAP
A2: we communicate via twitter, Facebook, Instagram, our school YouTube channel and a parent Smore newsletter. Most teachers also use Remind for their patent contact. I ask each teacher to make personal positive parent contacts once a month along with positive referrals #LeadLAP
A4: As a teacher I have control over my classroom, providing meaningful feedback to administrators, and listening to students. The key is to always adapt to make it the best educational experience for each class as they all are different. #LeadLAP
A6 you post things on social media wishing people well on holidays and sharing inspirational quotes, video newsletters, give shout outs to alumni and the community, be visible get involved in organizations and charities. Go see your students extracurricular visit clubs #LeadLAP
Answering phone calls, emails timely. Even if Ps or Ts need to talk outside of regular hours, if needs a listening ear, I’m there to provide that b/c they are important and need to be heard.
I just walk the hallways of TwitterLand and permanently borrow amazing ideas from educators who are making a huge difference with students each day :-) #LeadLAP
A5- Our school has student art and work displayed throughout the school that promote student learning. Even parents have participated, this piece was done by the parent of a current student. #leadLAP@mreruchie @HthPrincipal
A5; when we host a PD we try & transform the environment based on a theme like in #TLAP. Decorations, costumes, snacks, coffee, music, visuals, it begins in the parking lot! We are modeling what their classroom should be #LeadLAP#piratePD
A6: I also READ a lot, & push myself to grow professionally outside of the school day! We have to keep growing as leaders! We can’t just do the daily tasks of the job & be done! #LeadLAP
A6: Every year, I inform my Ss if they let me know of their extracurricular activities that I will do my best to attend!! It’s great to be out in the community supporting my Ss away from school! The Ps love it & Ss bean with pride that you’re there!! It’s my favorite!! #LeadLAP

A6: The best thing you can do outside the school day is to CONNECT.
CONNECT w/students. Attend their extracurricular activities.
CONNECT w/families.
Make home visits.
CONNECT w/other educators & schools both w/in & outside your district & beyond.
CONNECT via Twitter. #LeadLAP
A6: Communicating gratitude allows us to recognize each other while affirming positive acts. I write notes of gratitude to staff & leave them on their desk, chair or computer. It's a personalized way of saying, "I see you." #LeadLAP
A7: I hope my staff sees & feels that I work on building a positive environment! Trying to ease the stress with laughter, pranks, notes of encouragement and anything that can take their mind off the hard stuff. #LeadLAP
A5: Maintenance and custodians do a great job ensuring school is clean and maintained. Staff picks up after themselves. Workroom is inviting for PTO to volunteer and work in. Bulletin boards extend the learning in the classroom. Lots of flexible seating. #LeadLap
A7: Even on the rough days, I try to keep a smile on my face. I try to see the positives and be a listening ear to those who need it without falling prey to the negativity that can come with those times of listening. #LeadLAP
And music... always playing music - it's therapy.
A6: I love attending after school events (concerts, sporting events, plays, etc.) for students I no longer work with. It’s great to see them in this light & keeps me connected to them & their families. I want them to know that they will always matter to me. #LeadLAP
A6: We started doing FB Live Read Alouds this year because of ideas we read about in #LesdLIT by @mandyeellis. They’ve let me connect with students and families about books. They’ve helped us teach important lessons. They’ve changed our school culture. #LeadLAP
Unfortunately, as history has shown, some of those same leaders miss the paradigm shift. I remember buying records (78's and 45's) at Sound Warehouse, but they are long gone. See The Shift..Be Nimble..Move Not To Where The Puck IS But Where It Will BE - Wayne Gretzky #LeadLAP
A7: This has been a hard week - I started to question if I have done enough. Luckily, we have strong teams that were able to remind me #youareenough and just to keep being me. #grateful#LeadLAP
A7 I try to always approach the day with a positive attitude and smile despite what may be going on in my own life or what transpired the day before. I work hard , send thank you msgs to staff and am available even outside of school hours if needed. Relationships matter! #LeadLAP
A6 One thing I do is pretty much beg Ss to tell me what they’re involved in and I do my absolute best to show up. Attending a recent musical with my own kids was one amazing experience-of course I posted it on Instagram immediately. #LeadLAP
A7: With staff, the biggest thing I try to do is appreciate the hard work and effort every single day, support without holding back and presuming positive intentions. #LeadLAP
All of this communicates love. I know it's traditionally not ok to talk about love in schools, but that is what this is. LOVE is powerful. Our work is an act of love and hope. #LeadLAP
A7: I keep in mind Todd Whitaker’s quote “when the principal sneezes the whole school catches a cold” to remind me that I have a responsibility to maintain a positive and caring environment for my students and staff #LeadLAP

Our time together is coming to an end! As always chatting with this awesome #LeadLAP crew is a great way to kick of my Saturday. Thank you! Have a wonderful weekend.
A5: I exceeded expectations in my physical space by incorporating flexible seating. It's not much but I did what I could do to make Ss comfortable. Also, no rules are posted except for the cell phone charging station which reiterates our learning environment. #LEADLap
I have always believed this as well. However, this year my staff has told me they appreciate that I'm vulnerable when I"m having a hard day that they can support me too. It's what my next blog post is about! #LeadLAP

A6: This is an area of growth for me; trying to keep my life in balance! Want to do more with my Sts and families, but have my family of 3 boys and their activities to attend to. Love the responses here, getting many ideas! Thanks! #LeadLap
A7: Bring laughter & show gratitude daily!Ex- treat trolley, 12 days of holiday cheer, written notes to staff, etc. I also model that I am learning ALL the time along w/them by leading book studies. Fac mtgs are now PD & collaboration. It’s about fun & learning!#LEADLAP
Once I had a student tell me he appreciated that even if there was an issue the day before, we started fresh each day. It meant so much, and I try to live by that with students and colleagues as an administrator. #leadlap
A2: Giving tours to prospective students and their parents is my favorite, because I don’t have to do a thing to sell our school. I just have to walk around and let them see that children are the center of everything we do. We’re not perfect, but we’re always growing. #LeadLAP
A7: One of the most powerful things I do every year is “shadow” each team member individually so that I see what their work environment is like and so we can compare notes about strengths and challenges and how I can better support team members. #LeadLAP
A7: I’m trying to get better at listening to staff, greeting them by name, and stepping into their shoes before asking a question or having a conversation with them. I can’t forget that THEY are stakeholders, too. #LeadLAP
A7: We do the best we can to celebrate small things and promote healthy culture. We ask for feedback (and then do something with it!), run a woot woot wagon (idea from @BethHouf), feed people, and rent a bowling alley for staff and their families for a couple of hours. #leadlap
A7: Celebrate the great things they are doing, treat them like family, support them, listen, model kindness & a positive attitude daily, acknowledge them (in person, notes, staff announcements, etc.). #LeadLAP
