#oredchat Feel free to share an experience that is or is NOT education related! When have you been treated like a subject to rules and less like a person with a need or problem to be solved? More formal phrasing below.....
#oredchat A1: Empty restaurant at an airport. I went to sit down at the bar, order breakfast, watch a soccer game. Menu price was too much. Asked for just OJ. Bartender said I had to order a meal to sit there. Manager backed her up. The place was empty!!
A1: I think sometimes students feel like they are treated like "numbers" rather than individuals. It's important to make our interactions real and personal :-) #OREdChat
A1. When I was trying to better myself and I was being told I needed to work instead of finishing my education. Needless to say I finished my education.. #OrEdChat
A1b: When the state indicator used to evaluate Ts on S engagement mean a S can't read a novel of their choice in your class if finished with work because they aren't engaged in your content. #OrEdChat
#oredchat I'm sure many of you realize the importance of relationships. In this context, when have you discarded a rule for the sake of a better S outcome? More formally, see below!
A2: Recently changed the format of a common assessment to look more like the daily writing tasks my students do each week...sometimes just shifting the format helps students understand the task better... #OREdChat
A2. I allowed Ss to use cell phones for research and polls in my class when I was told not to do it by admin. It was an awesome Digital Citizenship lesson that continued throughout the term. #OrEdChat
A2: When a S is starving upon arriving to class, but the rule of the district is no food in class (class parties excluded), and I slip S a granola bar. S was able to concentrate from then on. Too hungry means lack of focus. #OrEdChat
A2: S was gone for the last two weeks of semester due to surgery. I argued that she didn't need to take a Sem exam in order to be given a fair evaluation for the term. She had no chance to focus her study before the make-up test date. Test was dropped. #oredchat
#oredchat Ts often post or hand out rules early, if not the first day, of the school year. Why is this good and important? Why might this NOT be a good idea? Give us your pros-cons.
