Thank you for visiting #ksedchat. We welcome all educators to our chat that runs Mondays at 8 p.m. Central. Though many of our educators have their homes in Kansas, all teachers are welcome to pop in and join in on the learning.
Hi #ksedchat! Kara, HS Sci teach formerly from KS...now teaching in NYC. My winter plans include finishing unpacking into our new house. (We moved into our more permanent place over Thanksgiving).
HI, #ksedchat . Deb from De Soto, I teach 1st grade. My plans are to relax, catch up on reading and get ahead on lesson plans as I'm new to 1st this year.
Good evening #ksedchat Jill from Cheney, 7-8 SocStud & HS Teaching as a Career. Planning on spending time w/ family and attempting to get my 5 yr old to tie her shoe...
Q1: My greatest procedural struggle in MS this year has been getting my students to clean and tidy up our #flexibleseating after every hour and get it ready for the next class. #ksedchat
A1) Creating an independent center within our reading centers has been a challenge however breaking our reading time into 3 centers has been awesome! #ksedchat
#KSedchat Janet, FACS teacher from Southeast KS. Looking forward to a long break this year to spend time with my toddler (and binke-break him...wish us luck!)
A1-Challenge-getting used to 1st graders. Success-Ss are able to check-in like my 5th graders did, Ss are now in charge of their morning work tubs, & getting ready to take over end of day shut down. #ksedchat
A1: My greatest success- comments like "Mrs. Richard I love coming to 1st hour every day" greatest challenge: I fear I still have students who have never raised their hand and felt safe enough to contribute #ksedchat
#KSedchat Janet, FACS teacher from Southeast KS. Looking forward to a long break this year to spend time with my toddler (and binkie-break him...wish us luck!)
OOOO that is difficult. In first I tell my students to put them back in their "homes". If they can't, then they don't get to use them the next day. Good luck! #ksedchat
A1: it is a continuation from last year, my flexible seating. I love that it is focused on what the kiddos need. I still have at least 1, who doesnât use the seats as intended #ksedchat
Rolling in late! Heather 6th Grade from Neodesha. My winter break plans are to relax and recharge! Also, lots of Netflix! (Season 2 of The Crown!) #ksedchat
Paige Deathe - 6th social studies from Tonganoxie. A1: Implementing flex seating has been awesome for some classes and not for others. Working on finding the balance! #ksedchat
Keep it up! 1st graders will surprise you with what they are actually capable of doing. Structure, routine, and teaching expectations are key! #ksedchat
A1: I have one 9th grade chemistry class that has a lot of ADHD - so keeping them on track is a challenge, BUT - even with the tendency to give in to distractions, they are doing quite well! #ksedchat
A1: My greatest management success/challenge has been balancing 1:1 chromebooks given to us with no training! Itâs like Iâm so thankful, but so overwhelmed! #ksedchat
A1: My 8th grade has moved from project after project. Very little traditional teaching this semester. It's been awesome and I'm working to figure out how to model that for my student teacher in the spring & get through all her requirements #ksedchat
A1: Successes - many of my students talk about how much they are learning in class. They are talking about it to their parents and advisors too, which feels good! #ksedchat
Yes! I was constantly told they couldn't do things, but I'd try anyway. Most time successful. Now, I just tell them Ts told me they couldn't so they do just to prove them wrong. One day they told me to stop listening to those people. #ksedchat
Keep it up! 1st graders will surprise you with what they are actually capable of doing. Structure, routine, and teaching expectations are key! #ksedchat
A1: I've struggled this December, Thanksgiving break was so relaxing, no rush. It's been hard getting back to the swing (and rush). Having to really push through and show the kids there's no where I'd rather be than school. #ksedchat
A2: Creating engaging and attention-getting lessons/projects to where they don't have much time to act out. We are also constantly referring to our social contracts to keep us in line! #ksedchat
A2: Keep it going and keep it meaningful for everyone! Create something in your classroom that Ss will remember and be excited about after break. #ksedchat
A2- You have to care, be flexible, and willing to makes those last days memorable. Itâs better have quality community time with your SS than, waste time teacher low-quality lessons. #ksedchat
A2) Keep routines as structured as possible. Students who struggle with behaviors NEED as much consistency as we are able to keep leading up to Winter Break #ksedchat
A1 #ksedchat keeping kids motivated. This is the time of year they aren't getting a ton of exercise and they aren't spending much time outside. Vitamin D is low etc.
A2-We are doing STEM projects w/holiday books and their own makerspace projects. Whenever they can build, there are zero issues and total engagement. #ksedchat
As a first-year teacher, i'm learning about the time in between Thanksgiving and Christmas break. I try to keep our routines as normal as possible but also planning exciting and engaging lessons and projects! #ksedchat
A2: Projects, not worksheets! Do not fill with busy work. A little more planning is a lot less headache. We are doing Christmas Poet-Trees and inviting our functional SPED class to make snowflake peppermint slime! #ksedchat
A2 we are doing a highly collaborative and pretty high interest project this week. It offers them some choice. Day one went well.
Choice, high interest, collaborative activities have always worked well for me. #ksedchat
I have makerspace challenge cards I got from TPT Ss choose from three or four, but they can always pitch me a project. and then during break I'm looking at our curriculum to see what we can build. I'm pretty sure Native American homes will be one. #ksedchat
A2: I'm still making time for conferencing with students. Whether about what they are reading, what they did over the weekend or what they're feeling as winter break comes. They could be experiencing a lot too so it's nice to check in with some 1-1 talk. #ksedchat
A3 Class routine, agenda, warm up, creating a neat work space in the first 5.
Reminding what listen skills look like. Being on task when work is assigned. Treating everyone with respect and kindness. #ksedchat
A3: All the things that keep our classroom culture thriving. Morning meetings and greetings. Student of the week highlights. Our class mantra. We can't lose sight of our power together. #ksedchat
A3-Our school has an Expectations Day where we review school procedures. However, I'm sure i'll have to remind them how we check in for lunch, do tubs, etc. Although, they are pretty awesome kids so I'm thinking all will go smoothly.
I'm a rose colored glasses girl. #ksedchat
A3: All the things that keep our classroom culture thriving. Morning meetings and greetings. Student of the week highlights. Our class mantra. We can't lose sight of our power together. #ksedchat
A3: All the things that keep our classroom culture thriving. Morning meetings and greetings. Student of the week highlights. Our class mantra. We can't lose sight of our power together. #ksedchat
A3 "just because you CAN doesn't mean you SHOULD". REGARDING IPAD USE.
"you all will live longer, happier lives if you NEVER TOUCH ANYONE'S PROPERTY WITHOUT PERMISSION" #ksedchat
A4: I'm working on being more present in every aspect of my life. My Ss deserve it when I'm with them, my family deserves it when I with them... and I deserve it sometimes too #ksedchat
Have routines, don't allow too much time, have next activity ready to go so there is no down time. Depending on the age a song or chant may work as a time reference to complete the transition. #ksedchat
A4-Making Number Talks an everyday occurrence. Considering Google Classroom in addition to utilizing Seesaw better.Loved Google Classroom w/5th graders & think it would help management in 1st. #ksedchat
A4: I must get more organized with scheduling Tier 2 and Tier 3 interventions for struggling learners. I get so caught up in teaching, that I need to make sure ALL the kids are learning and retaining. #ksedchat
I'm wanting to use number talks too....so many things on the to-do list. I currently use Remind but I'm super tempted by Seesaw. Let me know how it goes! #ksedchat
I use Remind, but not all of my parents are signed up for either one. I think at conferences I'm going to have my Ss show them what they are missing. #ksedchat
A5: I have a lot of fun projects in 2nd semester so encouraging with building anticipation! They love doing anything hands on so ensuring lessons are engaging also. #ksedchat
A5 make sure the class look and layout looks like the first day. Maybe start with a team building activity. Digital breakout. Spend part of the class just talking and listening about break and what people are looking forward to 2nd semester. School related or not. #ksedchat
A5-Projects! Plus, they are learning to take pictures and video using @DoInkTweets . They will get to go train others in January. This means Ts as well. #ksedchat
A5: We've got to take care of ourselves! It's easy to think about everything on our to do list during the holidays but treat yo'self and relax a little! #ksedchat#stopteacherguilt
A5 Try to have SOMETHING planned, even just a little something, each day that would make Ss happy/excited they came to school that day. If you arenât having fun, they wonât be either #ksedchat
