Question 1 in a an easier format How are you addressing those skills in Tier 1 instruction with the students you support? Do you use a literacy program that addresses these areas? Does your curriculum provide systematic, sequenced foundational skills instruction? #teachNVchat
Tika, hi! I work with a fantastic 5th grade teacher at my independent school and have a good friend in the public school in my town if you ever want to collaborate with them. I teach Ks and we love google hangout, real penpals and @flipgrid. :) #teachnvchat
A1: I have a strong dept with scaffolded instruction. By the time Ss get to me as AP seniors, they have a strong skill set that I get to kick up a notch. My goal is fine tuning and strengthening skills. College prep and real-world application.#teachnvchat
A1: Yes! Phonemic awareness (unfortunately) gets thrown out so easily... we use 95% to hit those print concepts, phonemic awareness and phonics skills hard. Then move to PRESS for fluency. Seems to be working really well! #teachnvchat
A1 In 5th grade Tier 1 instruction, I focus on the RF Standards during our Literacy Block (roots and affixes). We also reiterate these standards in the writing block. #teachNVchat

A1 man you need serious literacy skills just to get through the Q, LOL we use Fundations which is heavily scripted & sequenced then we revisit those skills focuses throughout the day, during read aloud chapter book, when talking, individual reading & writing #teachnvchat
Q2 Students may best remember these important foundational skills if they are taught with intention, purpose and fun! How do you infuse fun into your i.e. phonics lessons throughout the week and year? #teachNVchat
Our approved reading program does have foundational skills embedded. However, that forces most teachers to go lockstep with the reading program unless they have a strong sense of teaching foundation skills. #teachnvchat
A2: as a HS teacher, I love to keep reading, writing,& analysis fun & engaging by designing interactive projects, choosing high interest, yet challenging texts, and portfolio or process method. #teachnvchat

A2: I always love using silly poems that focus on certain spelling/phonics patterns. A lot of hands on games and activities as well. My Ss have also had fun using interactive phonics notebooks that they get to cut, glue, and color #teachnvchat
Yes - I agree Carol but having a sequenced, systematic FS curriculum with decodables is golden! We're hopeful that Ts pick up a strong knowledge base through additional PD opportunities. #teachNVchat
In the early grades I embed the foundational skills in chants, gestures, songs, poems, shared readings, oral word games, phonics games. Even that works for ELs and others. #teachnvchat
A2 I’ve had kids write/build words in snow, we’ve been working on suffixes so we took iPads to find examples in hallway, then isolate root/base words #teachNVchat
Question 3 What systems do you have in place for monitoring your students' progress? How and when do you make time to reteach while also continue to move forward? #teachNVchat

A3 periodic assessments/Fountas & Pinnell for reading, writing is ongoing and always a conference led process but I’m a big believer in a watched pot never boils, you need to allow them the space & time to progress without stress or hovering #teachNVchat
A3: We do weekly progress monitoring with FastBridge which is AWESOME! More informally, checking the Ss work and understanding daily helps to gauge where to go next. Working with small groups all day makes reteaching much easier #teachNVchat
