Join #ICEilchat for the last Thursday of the month at 8pm CST as we discuss topics on ed tech, collaboration, building a PLN, professional learning and so much more!
Sean from Orland Pk IL. Dir of Instructional Tech at Marian Catholic HS. Trying to figure out how I can have a spreadsheet open on one screen, the Cubs game on TV, and #iceilchat on this screen.
Hi friends at #iceilchat! Excited to join you all! Jennifer, Education Strategist from @participate and professor at @SaintLeoUniv! Proud #ICE18 presenter :) Let's get this party started!

A1: Engaging professional development is responsive to the moments that we are living through. Social media and conversations like this are extremely powerful components of the process. Official "PD" providers are slowly incorporating this mindset - but can do better. #ICEilchat
Love the fact that you used the term Responsive. Best PS is when we respond to people's needs when they arise - not when we feel like covering the topic. #ICEilchat
A2: I like that the PD at #channahonpride is related to what we are doing in classrooms with our students and takes into consideration teachers' interests AND is often led by our teachers. They know the culture and our learners and what they need. #ICEilchat
A1: High quality professional learning is: relevant, collaborative, hands-on, inspiring, includes support/follow-up, & directly impacts students. #ICEilchat
#iceilchat we have an Ed Tech Task force, so, we help others in our school with technology, designed and wrote online classes for seven years and back in the classroom https://t.co/eJc482D7mL
Such a valuable point! Needs to combine Ss and Ts interests and be related to what is going on in the moment. LOVE that it is also led by Ts! #empowering#ICEilchat
A2) We are aligning our PD to our SIP goals and focusing on student engagement. Also our district is trying something new with "Turn-Key" pd #iceilchat
so true! what we began experimenting with 8+ years ago - these chats - are becoming more refined. it's now an expectation that a responsive environment that draws upon every voice in the room is part of the PD mix. or at least it should be. #ICEilchat
#iceilchat q2) we have an Ed Tech Task force, so, we help others in our school with technology, designed and wrote online classes for seven years and back in the classroom
We are basing our PLC's off Ts needs & where they are in edtech integration. Base data/survey created from ISTE standards. Ts self identify their level. Build PD around that. #ICEilchat
A2 At the moment we're really trying to get into the groove of getting out of our comfort zones and (bravely) try new strategies that involve edtech. This is the reason why I've been recently active (and been loving) in Twitter chats like this. #ICEilchat
A3: this chat is an example. try having an inservice with another district outside of your area via Skype, Hangout, etc ... Cloud-Based EdTech Camp! #iceilchat
A3 One thing I love most about Twitter chats is when PLNs generously share cool, helpful edtech tools that they have tried. We try to go over these tools with my colleagues and look for possible integrations in Senior High courses that we handle. #ICEilchat#CollaborativePD
A3: Documents in the cloud are easy to access anywhere and easy to SHARE. Educators can connect across multiple platforms to get new ideas, meet new people, and work on projects together #ICEilchat
Will do! Thanks, Sean. Looking for something where we can do pre- and post-assessments but really design on the needs of attendees. Love that it is built on #ISTEStandards#ICEilchat
A3: #EdTech can help teachers customize their PD to meet their needs, allow them to find exactly what they want, and give them access to experts and sources they might not normally have access to. #ICEilchat
They're a little hidden in there. I felt the ISTE language is really good for us in the know, but for newbies its not language they can easily wrap their minds around. #ICEilchat
A3: It's not as much "edtech" as a recognition that technology and social media are constantly impacting our practice and our lives. This is true both by interacting with students and our own habits. Support comes from having a cultural mindset that responds to this. #ICEilchat
I'm looking forward to seeing more ways that EdTech can change my classroom and help me to engage more of my students. I want to more options. #ICEilchat
A4: I am always trying to push myself out of my comfort zone to learn/try something new and do things that will benefit teachers and students, which is why I decided to apply to be a #GoogleEI#DEN18 -- eek! Results next week! #FingersCrossed#ICEilchat
#iceilchat hoping to integrate vernier probes technology with our chrome books so students participate and gather real science data https://t.co/NAhSb6xHa6
Karen, Library Information Specialist in Vernon Hills. 3 imply ppl in my learning journey I’m tagging into this chat are @RoselleSD12@ktwaggz@drkareno#ICEilchat
Q4: I’ll try anything once. Each class, each school year is unique as well as each learner. I’m hands-on, some are readers, and others need active stimuli. Games require decisions ever few seconds, how often to you present Ss with a decision? #iceilchat
A4 My Ss and I have recently discovered @Flipgrid. The positive response was so unexpected. I love seeing them expressing themselves while being creative and collaborative as well. This can make me sleep even better at night, but don't wanna stop there. #ICEilchat
A4: Teamwork & Collaboration this year. I've spent the last 5+ years bringing ideas back & passing them along. This year I want to collaborate & build something new & AWESOME! #ICEilchat
Isn't it awesome when they tell you to come see what you showed them? It makes my day to see it implemented and the kids benefitting from it. #ICEilchat
A4: Currently enrolled in a Coursera course on my own but find it hard to keep up without actual deadlines looming. Also, since I now do marketing for ICE, would love to shadow others who are especially successful with social media marketing. #ICEilchat
totally. and even for those who don't do the chat thing, there is still an immersion within social media (Facebook, Insta, whatever) that is influencing how we think and behave. may as well own that at this point. #ICEilchat
A5: We use our LMS @Schoology to share ideas through a 'teacher course' where we can share resources and discuss ideas w/ online discussion boards if we can't meet face-to-face. #ICEilchat
A2: We’re given time to collaborate as grade level teams District wide. We also fill out surveys after each D experience & are given the chance to offer feedback & suggestions that are actually valued & help steer future planning of PD. 👍🏻 #ICEilchat
A5: our admin team is taking a leap with 365 OneNote to collaborate and communicate. Seems simple but using it effectively is still a process we are perfecting so as to model for T teams& depts. #ICEILChat
A2: Our next district wide PD day is made up of “choice” sessions similar to the ICE conference format! Making good use of all the experts in our district. #ICEilchat
A5: Twitter -- sharing what is learned while at PD events. Creating shared folders of resources received from PD events. Blogging. All ways I try to document/save/curate/share what I learn. #ICEilchat
A5 Let "outsiders" speak of your competencies. Get certified in different #EdTech tools if this is part of your PD and professional learning. If we do this, our Ss can easily tell that we really walk the talk. #ICEilchat
OMG!!! I just had an amazing idea reading through these while watching the Cubs game & Grey's Anatomy. Thank God for my lack of focus. It's going to involve AR/VR & Classroom visits. #ICEilchat
A5 you have to keep a track of your learning. I might be a log or some notes. Then create a doc and share it. If you don’t share what you have learned, why learn #ICEilchat
I have been hearing about @msonenote a LOT recently! Need to take some time to look at it more closely myself. Change takes time but learning together can be so powerful! #ICEilchat

A5) I know I'm a little late to the @Twitter parties but there is a lot of good stuff on here. And it's always good to learn and grow with peers #iceilchat
Q5: I think vlogs and blogs are great tools to archive your adventures so that you can look back on ideas, reflect on what the results were or remember what you forgot to try all while sharing your experience. #iceilchat
Sean, if you were not one of my favorites before, you are now! A continued @GreysABC fan here as well! Impressed you can be multi-tasking that well! :) #ICEilchat
Q4: I have a green screen and stand this year, I’m excited to support teachers in using it with their PBL projects. For example, “weather forecasts” for severe weather unit projects using green screen and DoInk app. I’ve never done it, but I’m excited to try! #ICEilchat
A4: my counselor and I created a MSForm and held minute meetings with each student! We will use the data to share with Ts specific info such as...what is their biggest stressor at MS level. Supports my goal to know all of my students by name. #ICEilchat
Kids in my district LOVE doing green screen videos! They will get super creative finding ways to make it fit with what they are currently learning! They are so motivated by it! #ICEilchat
#iceilchat we use badging at our school and we need to provide an artifact to receive the badge, I also used badging when teaching python to students, badge for learning, a loop, string, else if statement. https://t.co/ysmw2nIip9
A6: We have created stickers for teachers and students to put on their Chromebooks for different learning experiences or being proficient in different tools. They are super motivating for the students AND teachers! #ICEilchat
Wow! This is @sgorbatkin following along on #iceilchat while multitasking this evening. So impressed with the reflective participation from numerous educators throughout @ice_il.
Q7: ISTE Teacher Standard #1: Learner encourages us to actively participate in local and global learning networks.
What learning networks and communities support you as a learner?
#ICEilchat@iste
Our kids have accounts with @WeVideo so that's what they use. It's really easy with WeVideo. I haven't used anything else because it's been so successful. #ICEilchat
This is AMAZING!! Way to go, Laura! I would love to hear more about this if you blog about it or share more info in the future. #studentvoice#ICEilchat
A6: Really can't get behind the badging system. I'd rather have Ts share reflections, and let those be the guide as to who knows what. & who you can turn to. #ICEilchat

A6 I post in my social media account and tag some co-Ts. Their curiosity of such micro-credentialing leads to really good conversations and informal coaching within our department. Hope to reach more of our faculty, specially those in college. #ICEilchat
Q7: ISTE Teacher Standard #1: Learner encourages us to actively participate in local and global learning networks.

#ICEilchat@iste
A7: I use Twitter, of course :-) I rely heavily on talking and working with my friends/co-workers at #ChannahonPride. I also learn a lot from other Google Certified educators/trainers/innovators. #ICEilchat
Wow! This is @sgorbatkin following along on #iceilchat while multitasking this evening. So impressed with the reflective participation from numerous educators across the country. Thanks to @ice_il for supporting networking and collaboration across the educational community!
Q7: I get amazing support from all fellow educators from my district and all I’ve come into contact with. I’ve never had an educator discourage me. When I first started it was @TCEA who got me on the right track and helped me find my way. #iceilchat
A8 At the moment, I'm blessed to exchange ideas with members of #AsiaEd and now #ICEilchat. So happy to finally discover the good stuff in Twitter edchats.
A8: I rely so much on @JeremyMcBrayer -- I'm sure I must annoy him most days :-) He has such great ideas and inspires me! He has really helped me move forward in the work I do! #ICEilchat
A8: It goes without saying (although I am right now) that my particapeeps continuously inspire me. @smgaillard is my brotha from another motha. @LauraGilchrist4 is out there in the best of ways. @andycinek has some crazy, smart and fun ideas we can't wait to share. #ICEilchat
Q9: If you could take an online course on any topic to gain a new or deepened understanding in an area within education, what would that topic be?
#ICEilchat
I can see the reflection being part of the badge. I think badges are a personal thing w/ my swim coaching history. My swimmers didn't get ribbons, they focused on achieving goals & resetting them. #NoRibbons#ICEilchat
I think these are great ideas. I am with Sean - there needs to be some kind of reflection. And then maybe another badge would be taking that reflection and iterating to make improvements based on what was learned. #ICEilchat

A9: My favorite type of learning is always learning about others--their beliefs, their truths, their histories, and their hopes! Not sure what to call that though. #iceilchat
Q9: If you could take an online course on any topic to gain a new or deepened understanding in an area within education, what would that topic be?
#ICEilchat
Agree - or it should be one part of what leads to the badge - if we're talking open badges all of this could then be included in the badge (or at least a link to it). #ICEilchat
I don’t think we are talking about something that is based on a score. It would have to be more of a qualitative solution that determines the badge #ICEilchat

A9: I'm taking a class now called "School Law for Teachers" because I've always found law to be interesting. And the class IS interesting -- and realllly challenging! #Legalese#ICEilchat

A9: Data collection. So many of our decisions as educators are best made when we have solid data to support, but I’ve found many struggle with the tools and methods for useful data collection...asking the right Qs to lead to desired results. #ICEilchat
A9: Definitely more from @ProjectZeroHGSE I think they are one of the most underutilized gems in education. Real, positive, growth - amazing. #ICEilchat
