Alright, you magnificent mathematicians, it's time for #KaganChat! Today we're talking about using Kagan in #mathematics.
Please be sure to use #KaganChat and include A1, A2, etc. on each tweet.

#KaganChat Rick here. I'm from Orlando, Florida, but I'm tweeting tonight from Los Angeles where I'm working for a couple of days. I'm stuck in traffic, a couple of blocks from my hotel. Hopefully I will be able to participate fully in a few minutes.

Hey #KaganPals! Chatting from Wichita, KS. I’ll be in and out bc I have to live up to the Best-Aunt-Kris-Ever status to help nieces with sight words and spelling words. #KaganChat

A1 Math curriculum today tends to forget to evolve with society. Engaging students through PBL, giving student choice/voice, integrating technology and engaging using coop. learning is going to be 🗝 #KaganChat
Q1 Biggest Challenge is for some it is just not developmentally appropriate. Structures like Rally Coach help bring those students up to speed #kaganchat
Q1 #Kaganchat I think a huge challenge is to help parents understand that mathematics is not merely memorization of rote facts, but depends on thinking skills, creativity, problem-solving, and application skills!
A2: I would think that structures like Rally Coach and NHT would work great for this because Ss need to explain their thinking and check each other's work. #KaganChat
A2 When s’s have to say what they are thinking and be accountable for their thinking and in a safe way this assured helping with that. (PIES *coughcough) #KaganChat
A2 love sage and scribe at the beginning of the learning and then rally coach after a couple of days! Of course #edheads together is always great, too! #KaganChat
Q2 #Kaganchat I understand something on the concrete level when I am able to do it, I understand it much more deeply when I metacognitively can explain my thinking to someone else. Kagan structures ensure that ALL students are answering!
A2 Because we use structures alot in Math I can c their understanding grow. Ss are working w/each other 2 b able 2 explain their thinking. They collaborate & come 2 consensus. 2 come 2 consensus they have 2 explain their thinking. The more they do the better they get #KaganChat
#KaganChat & working on different problems at same time. I saw math teacher do this last week in Bermuda! The Ss had to do 1 step of problem, hold up the paper until everyone had completed one step, simultaneously pass papers, check the work, and complete the next step. Brilliant
A3 There is a lot of vocab involved w/ geometric concepts and retention and recall are also huge to process these so there’s an even greater need to utilize peer interaction to assure a sense of auto recall #KaganChat
A3 While teaching geometry w/Kagan structures Ss get the chance 2 explore concepts 2gether in a comfortable/safe environment. Because they feel safe, Ss are free 2 enjoy learning. If they are enjoying, they are learning! #KaganChat
A3 #Kaganchat I saw a high school geometry teacher having students determine line slope of angles by engaging them inQuizQuiz-Trade. It was powerful! It made me jealous because that is not how I learned it 😟
A4 Utilizing structures to check for understanding and provide constant practice and feedback. I love that structures allow me to do this every step of the way whether it’s review, application or assessment #KaganChat
A4 #Kaganchat@MyrissaDix showed me a great app once that is perfect for RallyTable where students take turns adding virtual objects to a virtual balance scale to get the scale balanced, and then create a written equation to represent it.
A4 Algebraic Thinking is not something learned quickly. It is a process. We explore multiple approaches 2 problems, display relationships in different ways (visually, numerically, verbally, etc) and interpret the information. #KaganChat
Might be a little tricky. The purpose of match mine is communication. So if the content is difficult it may get in the way of the structure working as intended.#KaganChat
Sage-n-Scribe is my "go-to" structure w/procedural math. The more Ss work together, the more they help each other make the abstract more concrete. #KaganChat
I seriously wonder what we did before sage and scribe at Symsonia!! This structure has added so much depth to our kids’ knowledge and ability to “talk” the content! #gamechanger#ridersallin#KaganChat
A5: I LOVE Kagan structures! (Quiz Quiz Trade & Rally Coach are my favs)... but I want to push back on this question a bit. How can we get Ss ( & Ts) to see math differently...
Not just procedural? There is more to math than procedures! #kaganchat#MTBoS
Talking chips allow Ss express their views! I like this structure for both math and science! Just implemented this structure a couple months ago and find lots of value by using it! #KaganChat
A6 This comes back 2 Q1 & how kids can work 2gether 2 explain their thinking & come up w/an answer 2gether. Real World problems r what they will deal w/in their lives beyond school. Kagan structures give them the confidence which will help w/problems in the real world #KaganChat
Let’s incorporate rich tasks, problem solving, #noticewonder, interesting problems, 3-act tasks, & mathematical practices! All of this with Kagan structures is powerful! ❤️ @KaganOnline#kaganchat#MTBoS
Bonus: We always host which is nice so I can control the food. Ran away one year and had room service chicken nachos. They were sooooo good. #KaganChat
Bonus: I prefer to host but this year there just wasn’t enough time to get things together so we travelled.....but I still made the turkey and dressing! #KaganChat
