Hello and welcome to our #d100chat! @mmmaggos and I are excited to be hosting tonight for the first time together! Tell us who you are and what your leadership role is!
Hi Everyone-Super excited to be here tonight! Samantha Shuman, Piper Principal and Director of Accelerated and Gifted Learning and Co-PBIS External Coach #D100chat
Hello, #D100chat Crew! Colleen, K-2 Read Specialist & Lit Coach at @D100Piper; Scheduled tweets tonight to support @samshuman24@mmmaggos! Having family time, but will, of course, be seeking the Storify & checking the tag #D100chat! #wearepiper
A2: In 5LN, leadership looks like accountability. Ss holding each other accountable and teaching each other to meet expectations. When Ss are done with an activity, they seek out what to do next. Often, the answer is find who needs help-and they love it! #d100chat#teampershing
A1: Giving students voice, choice and opportunities; students are role models for various strategies when other group members are seeking additional reading support; everyone likes the chance to be the leader! #D100chat#wearepiper
A1: Leadership also looks like @Miss_D15, who is officially best team leader ever. She knows how to delegate, teach, and lead with grace. #d100chat#teampershing
A1: Leadership looks collaborative and a chance to build shared experiences together “collaborative leadership is the presence of opportunities for shared leadership, educator ownership, and sharing of instructional and pedagogical ideas.” https://t.co/raiSqIXRz7#d100chat
A1: Leadership looks like @Ms_Bazz and @supermaestra8 in Pershing- confident, calm, and reliable, w/o needing to be authoritarian or finding it necessary to "prove" anything to anyone. They trust their staff, who learn to trust themselves, all for the sake of the Ss #d100chat
A1:Leadership in schools is including others opinions, listening and encouraging others to pursue their goals by guiding and helping- not doing all the work. Also, being vulnerable and not “knowing it all” #d100chat
A1: Leadership takes many forms at Pershing...But what I see in all my leaders whether T or S is a person that is caring and wants to help and support, wants to push a little more, and wants to share in the struggles not just the successes. #D100chat#teampershing
Leadership looks like staff members finding something they are so passionate about and love so much that they put themselves out there to infect other people! It also looks like taking risks and be ok with some missteps because they believe in what they are doing. #d100chat
A1: Leadership at Pershing means being vulnerable and being self-aware, it means being able to take feedback and do something with it. #D100chat#teampershing
A1: People often mistake leadership as being the center of attention. In my classroom, my leaders give other students the voice and confidence they need. They are not the center of attention. They facilitate conversations that include everyone #d100chat
A1 I think the best definition of leadership that I have read in a while is in this blog post, defining what a leader is, and what a leader isn't. https://t.co/uUyIy2FqIP#sol18#d100chat
A1: leadership is being brave and thinking about others ahead of yourself. whether it be for Ss or colleagues. Putting your ideas into motion and helping others to make gains. #d100chat
A1:
leadership is about listening (@ShaneSafir)
&
leadership is saying “yes” to foster an environment to develop leaders (@JJCALABRESE)
&
Leadership is about asking “what do you think?” (@jg_jgarrett)
#d100chat
A2: Specific feedback and positive praise. Honest conversations about sharing for the benefit of the team. Modeling being vulnerable and taking risks. #d100chat
A2: encourage leadership by forming positive relationships, providing safe and fun learning enviroment, and amplifying Ss instrinsic motivation to take on leadership roles, such as becoming "strategy experts" during group w peers #D100chat#wearepiper
A2: Getting the right people in the right seats on the right bus-maximizing that person's potential and giving them access/resources to accomplish their goals. #d100chat
A2: For Ts And Ss - encourage and praise them - as one great leader told me once “reward what you want to see more of” the more we support each other, the better we are together #D100chat
A2: In order to motivate someone further, you need to make those meaningful connections that validate their ideas. This will encourage them to share their knowledge. #D100Chat
A2: As a quiet person, I was never given the chance to show others I could lead. Therefore- no one gave me the chance. I think the first step in motivating others to be leaders is allowing them to actually do it #d100chat
A2: As always, in order to encourage someone to be a leader, you need to be a good leader. Demonstrating those qualities to students is so important. Leader= bossy! #d100chat
A2: Encourage or motivate potential leaders is a mentoring process in which you help support and encourage them. Knowing your students and staff and what motivates them is key. #d100chat
A2: Encouraging ur leaders starts like everything else, w/ relationships...gotta build those up & then u are well on ur way to the motivating. In order to motivate you should inspire, in order to inspire, you have to have passion, you have to believe in your Ss & Ts #D100chat
A2: To build leadership in students I used to give them "special" jobs I knew they could handle. Praise them for a positive outcome and then ask them to teach it or share it w/a classmate. #D100chat
A2: having a strengths-based model of coaching helps me look for the strengths in people and encourage them continue to grow. When I hear about opportunities to learn, present, or collaborate, I love sharing w Ts to help them do things they didn’t think they could do. #d100chat
A1 A leader is not always "seen", but their presence is always felt, making a positive impact on staff and peers. Leaders create leaders who know that the goal of being a leader isn't to be a leader. #d100chat
A2: Part of motivating Ts and Ss is creating lots of opportunities for people to step up and run with things! You yourself have to be a leader that lets people know that failure is NOT a bad word, as long as you share and we all learn from it. #D100chat#teampershing
A3: For myself, being a leader means FEEDBACK! I need to hear what I'm doing well, but more importantly, how I can improve. I might not always like what I hear, but it is necessary for me to grow as a person and a professional. #d100chat#teampershing
A2: @mrsforest models leadership when she is presenting - I hope this will validate what you are doing and also push you to try something new! Love this! #D100chat
A3: Share & seek resources, provide & make collaboration time, seek help from others when it's their strength, provide opportunity, & promote brainstorming. #D100chat#BetterTogether
A3: As a learner, always try to stay reflective after events, experiences, +interactions when it comes to leadership - as a leader, I try to create opportunities for our #icoachbsd team to reflect when we meet as well #d100chat@rmbtowner_tech@mrsforest@JennyLehotsky
A3: sustaining a leadership capacity in myself takes optimism, flexibility, vulnerability, goals, the desire to be a forever-learner & of value to others, vision to spot challenges as opportunities, & focus to surround myself w challenge-seeking colleagues #D100chat#wearepiper
A3: Training your replacement is great way to sustain leadership. Spread your influence. Support your colleagues w/ a smile or an ear. Listen more, talk less. #D100chat
A3: Leadership means... accepting failure. Showing others that learning from failures will only make you a better leader, teacher and person. Without failure, one cannot succeed. No one knows it all. No one is perfect. #d100chat
A3: sustaining a leadership capacity in myself takes optimism, flexibility, vulnerability, goals, the desire to be a forever-learner & of value to others, vision to spot challenges as opportunities, & focus to surround myself w challenge-seeking colleagues #D100chat#wearepiper
A3: My number one tool to help sustain leadership is making time to have conversations and collaborate; making feedback an absolute and not an option.
#D100chat#teampershing
A3: Feedback & Reflection. Every day you need to reflect on what works but most importantly what didn't work. What can be done to make tomorrow even better?! Honest feedback from others will help you grow as a leader! #D100Chat
You did that today in your book club! You encouraged your student to share his idea, and it validated his idea, and ultimately led the group to research more! #d100chat#wearepiper
A2: Encourage (and model) collaborative relationships between students! Develop a nurturing environment where students can trust each other to ask for help/offer help to others! Student leaders= everything! #D100chat
I’m biased toward all three! And a listening sequence might sound like...
Listening is all about gathering street-level data. Listening is all about building relational capital. Listening is all about creating a culture where every person feels seen, heard, and valued.

Your internship program builds a lot of reflecting into your classes-be sure that you set aside time for reflection as you move into an admin role in the future. #d100chat
A3: Being a reflective leader and having honest conversations with leaders I respect help me to push myself; setting goals for myself is another way I hold myself accountable as a leader. #D100chat#teampershing
As a leader I research all sides of a subject- reading what principals, teachers, superintendents, school boards and students think. We have to be informed about our field. #d100chat
A2: Encourage (and model) collaborative relationships between students! Develop a nurturing environment where students can trust each other to ask for help/offer help to others! Student leaders= everything! #D100chat
I think about it as working through a leadership cycle with our staff. I try to see leadership qualities in everyone & then find opportunities for everyone to grow into leaders. A great way to do that is to share my leadership with staff & then support them like crazy #D100chat
A3 Honestly, to sustain myself as a leader, I need to surround myself by reminders of why I lead. Find that for you, and keep your eyes open to see it. And when you forgot, surround yourself with people who will remind you. #d100chat#KidsFirstAlways
A4: Shout out to the Emerson SIP team for keeping the focus, Core leaders for all of the updates, and Team Leaders for your collaboration! #lovemyteam#proudprincipal#D100chat

A4: Shout out to @Ms_Griseto. She has taken on so many responsibilities at our school, embracing every challenge & putting passion into everything she does. She is truly an incredible leader & talented teacher. She makes @D100Piper a better place everyday! #PiperProud#D100chat
A3 If we are building capacity as leaders, we need to remember that the title itself does not give us capacity to lead. We work towards capacity continuously. Keep filling the glass, because there are spills along the way. That's life. #d100chat
SO to all the leaders at Hiawatha that make our school one great place to learn! Our Ss are beyond lucky to have such dedicated teachers that go above and beyond for them. #d100chat#hiawathapride
A3: Keeping a leadership capacity is reflective thinking and always listening to others feedback. Servant leadership is a way of thinking and interacting with like leaders. #d100chat
A4 @Ms_Bazz is the best leader for me. She believed in me from the beginning. So much so that right after my 1st interview at Pershing I got a diff job offer & turned it down. I had to take my chances at getting the Pershing job bc I knew she believed in me #d100chat#sappytweet
Thank you all so much for being with us tonight to discuss leadership and how important it is to develop leaders in our building and district! #d100chat
