The American Association of School Librarians (AASL) will host a series of Twitter chats focused on the National School Library Standards for Learners, School Librarians, and School Libraries to help facilitate conversations for school librarians and educators everywhere as they unpack and implement the new AASL Standards in their local communities. Those wishing to participate can follow the hashtag #AASLstandards.
Welcome to our #aaslstandards chat in collaboration with #txlchat! Please introduce yourself, where you're from, and tell us something interesting about your library!
Hi! I'm Len, the district digital media specialist in Hillsboro, Oregon, home of @intel and next door to @Nike#AASLStandards#Txlchat
I have 35 campus libraries serving over 20,000 students!
Richelle, coordinator with #GISDLibraries in Garland ISD! Pretty darn excited to talk #aaslstandards with #txlchat tonight! Fun fact: I work with 76 librarians in my district!
Hello, I am Steven Yates, @aasl president! My interesting fact is I spent the day with president-elect @KathrynRLewis and ED @SylviaKNorton on the Hill advocating for school libraries as part of #NLLD18! #aaslstandards
Kathryn Roots Lewis here, AASL President-elect. My school system, Norman Public Schools in Norman, OK, is working on standards implementation. #aaslstandards
Sylvia Knight Norton. I'm the executive director for the American Association of School Librarians.
Proud of the work everyone has done that has led to this discussion on National School Library Standards for Learners, School Libraries, and School Librarians. #aaslstandards
Hello, I am Steven Yates, @aasl president! My interesting fact is I spent the day with president-elect @KathrynRLewis and ED @SylviaKNorton on the Hill advocating for school libraries as part of #NLLD18! #aaslstandards
A1: In my teaching at @BamaSLIS my pre-service school librarians worked with the #aaslstandards throughout the spring semester in our management/leadership class. In my work as @aasl president I work the Standards into every writing, speaking, and interview opp! #txlchat
#txlchat#AASLstandards 1st for me was to build awareness among my librarians. Shout out to Dr. Laura Sheneman who spent half a day with us on exploring the standards. @esc1library
A1 Our librarians spent time looking at the standards in Feb. We rotated through different stations and used different tools (tech and no tech) to share our understanding. #AASLStandards#txlchat
A1 I have along with my librarians who attended AASL in Phoenix have had standards workshops for our librarians. We also presented the standards at OLA to librarians across OK. #OLA#OKSLlife#aaslstandards
#txlchat A1: I recently presented on the #AASLstandards at the NYLA-SSL Conference with @Libraryjuan! We spoke about using the shared foundations as a lens for collection development.
A1: Most recently I have highlighted the #aaslstandards when talking with my new principal to help him better understand my role as a teacher librarian. #txlchat
A1. I have presented to all administrators, faculty groups and the school board. Also adding the standards into my lesson plans. #AASLStandards#txlchat#wyslig
A1: #AASLstandards give me a strong foundation for advocacy and my work with the directors and leaders of other educational organizations. These standards resonate with educators.
A1: I admit I haven’t done much in our district so far – I’ve posted the #AASLStandards on our department page on the District Website https://t.co/MUFLp9luCh & had some informal conversations about them with District leaders. #txlchat
A1: Brooksie Kramer, HS librarian from VA! I’ve used the new #aaslstandards as a platform to connect with division leadership and position our librarians as co-creators of our upcoming curriculum changes. The results have been really exciting.
a2 The national conference did a great job with the roll out...there's a lot on the @aasl website if you couldn't make it to Phoenix #txlchat#aaslstandards
A2: I attended the first #AASLStandards Twitter Chat on 9/18/17 – Takeaway: Reaffirmation that “reading is the core of personal and academic competency.” #txlchathttps://t.co/CkkzVodwOS
A2: Just this past weekend I presented with @skjohns at @ssl2018 on Long Island! We dove into the shared foundations as part of the #aaslstandards track at the conference. We received some great feedback that I'll be sharing with @aasl leadership for future planning! #txlchat
A2: I have read blog posts, articles in @SLJournal, attended webinars, and of course, kept up on Twitter. My biggest takeaway is that it will take time & lots of effort for us to unpack the #AASLStandards and fully implement them #txlchat
A2 Looking forward to digging into the different parts of the standards. Working to wrap my brain around the learner, librarian, and program pieces. Want to better understand how they are different/the same. #AASLStandards#txlchat
Q2 With all the professional development we have done, librarians need time to share, to see themselves in the standards and time to process. #aaslstandards
A1: Most recently I have highlighted the #aaslstandards when talking with my new principal to help him better understand my role as a teacher librarian. #txlchat
A1-Attended local @VTVSLA spring conference and looking forward to more #aaslstandards workshops at our Dynamic Landscapes conference in a couple of weeks! #txlchat
A2: I attended the #aaslstandards session at #txla18. My biggest takeaway is that I need the summer to delve into them in my own learning style! #txlchat
A2: I have followed along with Twitter chats and attended a deep dive session at our regional #VASLChat conference. I have shared the admin one-pager with school & district admin as well as our IT dept. #aaslstandards
Q3: What about the #AASLStandards has resonated with administrators, teachers, or the community? How has sharing the Standards helped you become a leader or enhanced your leadership? #txlchat
A2: We used the #AASLstandards with our library advisory committee. We did rapid prototyping -- read over it for ten mins, then brainstormed. Quick glance to make comm aware that we "have" standards ;) #txlchat
Q3: What about the #AASLStandards has resonated with administrators, teachers, or the community? How has sharing the Standards helped you become a leader or enhanced your leadership? #txlchat
Real A1- Crosswalking the #aaslstandards with our graduation proficiencies, referencing the #aaslstandards whenever I teach a lesson or work with students. #txlchat
I found that to be true as well. The new #AASLStandards are so applicable to all aspects of learning. They just make sense to people in all content/leadership positions.
A3 I had the opportunities to share a bit about the standards with principals. I encouraged principals to go back to their campuses and speak with libs about how they are implementing the standards. Some of them actually did and had great convos! #AASLStandards#txlchat
#txlchat@aisdlibsrv@AISDITD We explored the #aaslstandards at our AISD librarians' meeting last week; biggest takeaways is we need to be on the cutting edge of things and LEAD
A2. I attended the Affiliate Preconference in Phoenix and some webinars! Also leading webinars and planning a presentation for our summer conference. #AASLStandards#txlchat#wyslig
A3: The #aaslstandards have really allowed school librarians a moment to reflect on our practice and celebrate the work that we are doing in the areas of equity, diversity, & inclusion. I am excited to continue sharing more at the @ASLAlib conference in June and beyond! #txlchat
Would be good to hear more about these connections with other models. There are so many variations from state to state and district to district, for how these are adopted fully or align with existing models. #AASLstandards
A3 . We did an inservice where librarians taught all our principals and curriculum coordinators about the standards. We had them process through how they saw the shared foundations in education journals, our evaluation document and our district strategic plan. #aaslstandards
A3- still a work in progress. Used the #aaslstandards to advocate for more time in the classrooms, increased collaboration with teachers and students. #txlchat
A3: The #aaslstandards changed at the same time as the VA Standards if Accreditation. There were so many similarities between our standards & the “5 C’s” (collaboration, citizenship, etc.) that it made admins more open to hearing how the standards could help w the change.
A3: My District leadership emphasizes knowing every student by name, strength, and need. The #AASLStandards fit perfectly into this with its emphasis on the learner. Redefining the role of the teacher-librarian @hillsboro_sd! #txlchat
A3 I believe putting the #AASLstandards into action is what my admin like the most. Seeing the benefits of collaborating and connecting on our student programs is powerful #txlchat
A2 I attended a few sessions at #AASL17 and have participatedin a few webinars and Twitter chats. I love how focused we are on making these kiddos lifelong learners #AASLStandards#txlchat
#txlchat#AASLstandards Now as I am collaborating with teachers I try to view lessons and engagement through the multiple lenses of AASL. One that has jumped out at me is the Curate component.
A2: I attended the first #AASLStandards Twitter Chat on 9/18/17 – Takeaway: Reaffirmation that “reading is the core of personal and academic competency.” #txlchathttps://t.co/CkkzVodwOS
#txlchat A3: the #AASLstandards have fostered new discussions with teachers about collaborative opportunities through the library. I have the Shared Foundations on my desk when we meet!
#txlchat A3: #txlchat A3: the #AASLstandards have fostered new discussions with teachers about collaborative opportunities through the library. I have the shared foundations on my desk when we meet!
A3: This is my first year on a full flex schedule. It felt a little risky at first, but when the #AASLstandards came out I knew it was the right decision. More time to collaborate in classrooms and #geniushour! #txlchat
Q4: Under Shared Foundation II. - Include, how have you encouraged learners to demonstrate inclusiveness and respect for diversity in their communities? #AASLStandards#txlchat
#txlchat A3: the #AASLstandards have fostered new discussions with teachers about collaborative opportunities through the library. I have the shared foundations on my desk when we meet!
A2 and 3: A good portion of our evaluation is based on AASL standards. I added notes to my evaluation and shared with my principal. It is important to share how involved librarians are in many aspects of learning and the impact we have on student achievement. #txlchat
A4 Libs who support making in their libraries have an amazing opportunity to connect with the larger community. Service projects via maker time are a perfect fit! #AASLStandards#txlchat
A4: Reading & discussing literature w/diverse characters = opportunities for increasing inclusion/empathy/understanding Titles from the Schneider Family Book Awards are powerful prompts. #AASLStandards#txlchathttps://t.co/3Tx0GVK4rn
A4: I have been working with Ss to access a wide variety of information sources from all over the world, & to think critically about their echo chambers & filter bubbles! This will help them adjust their awareness of the global community! #AASLStandards#txlchat
#txlchat#AASLstandards A4 Be present in different libraries. Support public and academic libraries. Share and network within the community. Bring in guest speakers.
A4: The pre-service librarians I have the joy of working w/ have a chance to dive into #aaslstandards Shared Foundation 2 when thinking of collection development, instruction...all aspects of their libraries, really! It's an invigorating and exciting challenge at times! #txlchat
#txlchat#AASLstandards A4 Be present in different libraries. Support public and academic libraries. Share and network within the community. Bring in guest speakers.
A4: I worked with 11th graders on argumentative inquiry w topics they chose. We focused on digital citizenship, sharing our beliefs but being inclusive of other feelings, & our journalism Ss got to rate how effective & balanced each argument was #aaslstandards
A4 We hust completed a collaborative project with PE in which we worked in the students in our life skills (severe special needs) classes—they even helped make the webpages! #AASLstandards#txlchat#wyslig
A4 I am fortunate to work with some amazing teachers who really encourage inclusiveness. We are a small school so every classroom has a wide range of learners. #AASLStandards#txlchat
A5: I have been helping Students Explore by encouraging them to read widely, question their assumptions, and look closely at possible misconceptions they may have about others. #AASLStandards#txlchat
a5 my 4th graders loved exploring virtual underwater worlds today--they studied sharks in science class & today they were "swimming" with them! #txlchat#aaslstandards
A5 We promote having learners ask their own questions around a topic/standard and developing a way to share. The share can be writing, art, music, making... Learner voice & choice! #aaslstandards
A5. Thanks to #AASLStandards, I just tried an inquiry project that involved 3 class periods of nothing but wondering and questioning followed by several of exploring where the questions led. #txlchat#wyslig
a5 We try to give our students as many opportunities to learn as we can... Sometimes it involves "wait time." Finding a book, laser cutter, screwdriver... Depends a lot on the student. They think they can't, but they can. #aaslstandards#txlchat
A5: W/ learners it's all about empowering them to chart their own learning path whenever possible. I foster this in my pre-service librarians through professional development plans, but I definitely have work to do to expand this through all of my classes. #aaslstandards#txlchat
A5 Coding! I have Ozobots and Ss love them, but rarely get it right the first time. They take work and usually a second (or third) try. #AASLStandards#txlchat
A5: Sometimes it means helping teachers find new strategies for exploring. Shared strategies from Making Thinking Visible with teacher workshop. #txlchat#aaslstandards
A5: I’ve been working with Ts to create more choice board assignments that allow Ss to Explore the world beyond the classroom. Google Cardboard, green screen video creation, choice novel projects, makerspace challenges are all top of the list #aaslstandards
Q6: Which shared foundation most inspires you? Please share a teaching strategy, lesson, or tool that supports that shared foundation. #AASLStandards#txlchat
Absolutely! I tell my Ss the library is where they can learn whatever their teachers don't have time to teach about! Maybe a little sneaky. ;) #AASLStandards#txlchat
My HS Ss love the Spheros, and even when they’re not coding them, they enjoy the challenge of driving them through self-made obstacles. It’s a fail-fail-fail-finally succeed scenario—so fun to watch! #AASLStandards
A5-Our school supports and encourages growth mindset. Working on positive self talk from students. Supporting students to succeed in their pursuits. #AASLstandards#txlchat
A6: I am most inspired by the shared foundation Curate. I feel that it captures so many rich aspects of #informationliteracy that our students and teachers need to lead rich, productive, meaningful lives! #AASLStandards#txlchat
a6 explore continues to be my favorite because a growth mindset is the basis for it--I don't always know the answers & often tell my students that I am learning along with them! #txlchat#aaslstandards
A6 Right now, I am most inspired by "include." Been studying design thinking and have challenged myself to do better by approaching others from a place of empathy. #AASLStandards#txlchat
A6. Tough Question! I want to dive into all of them! Curation maybe intrigues me the most because it is so “library skill” specific. #AASLStandards#txlchat#wyslig
A6 Inquire-Supporting and developing learners who question and are passionate, innovative, and forward thinking about finding answers and solution will ultimately create a better world for all of us. Growth Mindset #aaslstandards
A5: I help Students Explore by having them look at a topic or theme from a variety of lenses. They hatched chicks in their classrooms. We researched the life cycle with online resources. Then we made stop motion animation videos of chicks hatching. #AASLStandards#txlchat
A6 Curate is such a pivotal foundation. You can have all the resources in the world, but unless you organize and share, it’s no help to anyone else. Google Sites is a good tool - can be as simple or advanced as you want it to be. #txlchat#AASLstandards
a6 Collaborate... Our space gives students so many opportunities to work together to explore, design, create, and share finished products. These friends worked together to create a custom bracelet to sell in our vending machine. #txlchat#aaslstandards
A6: Include has inspired me since day 1 of my work with #aaslstandards! This shared foundation is woven into all of my classes: Foundations of LIS, Management Theory & Practice, School Libraries, & the fundraising and grants class I'm developing right now at @BamaSLIS! #txlchat
A3 I am new on my campus (since Nov full time) so didn't want to totally bombard w/ new this, that, etc. Using #AASLstandards as stepping stone of conversation when appropriate this year. Will have better 'footing' next year. New principal, some new staff, clearer vision #txlchat
A6: I am most inspired by curate. I love the feeling when I find a perfect resource for a teacher or student and they look at me like I did some sort of magic!! 💁🏼♀️ #txlchat#AASLstandards
a6 explore continues to be my favorite because a growth mindset is the basis for it--I don't always know the answers & often tell my students that I am learning along with them! #txlchat#aaslstandards
A6-curate—I’m always looking for things that can help Ts help Ss! I share emails I get, info at conferences, resources in the lib #aaslstandards#txlchat
A6: I feel like I live in Explore for the most part, which is so exciting because inquiry can lead Ss anywhere. One of my fav recent Explore/Curate lessons involved Ss creating a @FollettLearning Collection w additional resources for their nonfiction choice book #aaslstandards
Here we go! Last question!
Q7: What collaborative projects do you have planned for this spring, summer, or fall that include the #AASLStandards? #txlchat
A6 For me, it’s Collaborate. I’m still working on it, but I am really trying to encourage Ss to work together. I am part of an incredible PLC and my teaching is so much better when I collaborate. @jcasap emphasized it at #AASL17 and I take it to heart! #AASLStandards#txlchat
Loving the discussion on #AASLstandards Received this week the copy I ordered and put up the window clings. Will spend time this summer planning how to get Ts and Ss on board. And hope to discuss more with my grad class this summer, help introduce them. #txlchat
A6- Curate is currently what inspires me. Creating Collections and Google pages for teachers and classes to use for their research. Developing online research skills modules for next school year. Curating book lists for students to browse. #aaslstandards#txlchat
A7 Oh man! Will be trying to design some fun/interesting/interactive PD that allows libs to really get to know the standards & how they can set goals based on them! #AASLStandards#txlchat
A7: I look forward to @ASLAlib next month and working with your fantastic @aasl board at #alaac18 in NOLA. We'll also have more information this summer on how your national organization is taking implementation and #aaslstandards support to the next level in 18-19! #txlchat
#txlchat A7: Hmmm... 🤔 Does collaboration between the #AASLstandards and myself count?! If so, I plan on diving into the standards to rethink my entire 6th-12th grade curriculum! If not, then I guess I should start making plans!
A7: I will be working the #AASLStandards into my professional development materials for teachers, district leaders, and campus administrators. Luckily, there are tons of materials on the @AASL website to help! https://t.co/eIHFZnIWiV#txlchat
A7 Librarians are working with their principals to create site implementation plans for the standards, always more training, play the standards card game with Principals! #aaslstandards
A7. Great Question! Just finished the PE sports presentation and website project. Now working on 5th gr Boston Massacre Mock Trial. Fall? Up in the air at this point... #AASLStandards#txlchat#wyslig
A7: I will be working the #AASLStandards into my professional development materials for teachers, district leaders, and campus administrators. Luckily, there are tons of materials on the @AASL website to help! https://t.co/eIHFZnIWiV#txlchat
A7- collaborative projects planned for the fall with #aaslstandards currently unknown; looking forward to working with rotating embedded role in both schools I serve and finding out! #txlchat
A7: Collaborating with four fellow librarians to host a Bluebonnet Summer Reading Camp to be held at one of the public libraries. It was a big success last year #txlchat#aaslstandards
Excited to collaborate with 3 other librarians (plus our digital learning team) in our district to offer 4 Killeen ISD Innovative STREAM Camps! The response has been amazing! #AASLstandards txlchat
A7: A summer collaboration I have planned is working with a public librarian colleague to put together a list of STEMreads, using great picture books to inspire hands-on activities, inquiry and empathy. #AASLStandards#txlchat
A7 Lots more planned for #Curate - YouTube in particular. And looking to #include with our public library for Banned Books Week. #txlchat#AASLStandards
A7: So many! A year-long blog project focused on choice novels & additional sources. Career prep where special needs Ss create green screen videos for portfolios. Monthly Information Ninja challenges, maker challenges tailored to content areas...the list goes on! #aaslstandards
Don't worry! If you missed tonight's #AASLstandards & #txlchat chat and would like to see all the ideas shared, the entire chat is available on Participate: https://t.co/Ra5G7gegta
Great chat. Thanks Len & Lori for taking us one step further in learning about #aaslstandards Will create archives and tweet a link to all hashtags later tonight. #txlchat
