#HipHopEd Chat is a weekly cyber cypher (chat) where stakeholders within Hip-Hop and Education come together to discuss issues that impact the youth and adults within our local, national and global communities. #HipHopEd Chat is a virtual form of professional development for Educators, workshop for Parents and other Adults and a brainstorming session of Hip-Hop practitioners. Our #HipHopEd chats are every Tuesday from 9-10 EST. on Twitter.
Summer Learning Loss is a phenomenon that historically focuses on the students but we wanted to expand this reality and look at how teachers may suffer from summer learning loss as well #HipHopEd
Summer is too often viewed as a downgrade. Why not an upgrade? Some things forgotten, or maybe improved. I look at notes from a year or two ago and think “who wrote that?!” #hiphoped
As someone who specializes in out-of-school time learning, we've had to address summer learning loss as an indicator of our proposed program's effectiveness #hiphoped
I believe that "learning" how to relax to renew and reinvigorate is key #HipHopEd I am personally learning how to do this in part by taking Yoga with my wife
What are the authentically sustaining themes that we can carry through the summer and expect them to develop? In classical and jazz world, we knew what artists were working on and what would hit in coming months. I spoke to @ImmortalTech and he’s in the lab. Who else? #hiphoped
Welcome 2 #HipHopEd tonight's topic we are discussing is developing strategies to combat summer learning loss among students and teachers. We welcome your thoughts and insights on tonight's topic
#HipHopEd Summer is an opportunity for Ss & Ts to engage in different kinds of learning...experiential, aesthetic, spiritual, physical, etc. #itsmorethanreading
We have programs in ohillynlike establishing play streets and free lunch delivery. For communities that depend on neighbor care this is critical and makes for a solid tie-in to summer learning. #hiphoped
Yes, the summer is a busy time for community based organizations and other front line efforts to engage youth. Is there a role educators could play in assisting community based organizations? #HipHopEd
#HipHopEd Been finding renewal and reinvigoration in running to some dope mixes so far this summer. s/o to @DJScratch and @jperiodBK for holding me down this week.

@DrScottWeiland When it comes to violence, I feel that the listeners see that it is okay to be violent because the artist was violent, but in reality, some artists get a big head and think they are "big stuff" and can do what they want. Some listeners do not see the line between
This is where we need to reach out to communities, maybe work with community artists to have lyric or spoken word writing workshops, dance or art camps #HipHopEd
I fear that the “summer loss” misses the growth and development that occurs—consolidation of memory, usefulness of information, application of concepts. They’re different human beings when they get back in Fall. Why expect something so linear and predictable? #hiphoped

For teachers, summer is an opportunity to learn about hip-hop, go to concerts, engage with the artists, learn more about what students are listening to & how they are engaging with hip-hop #HipHopEd
In higher education, we open our doors for summer campus and non-profits to host day trips to campus so that youth can experience walking through campus. We plant seeds that we can reap years later #HipHopEd
I definitely agree. Researching certain references in the lyrics that I didn't understand prior to hearing them helped me gain a better sense of the artists meaning #HipHopEd@DrScottWeiland

One challenge is when city leadership herd young people into programs that are supposed to be focused on youth development but the real goal the city cares about is safety for the tax payers and not the development of the youth #HipHopEd
And honestly, how many teachers know where the last one left off rather than just assuming. Is that loss? Nope. Miscalibration. Like a cypher where nobody listens. #hiphoped
I always miss Ss over the summer when music drops and I want to discuss! Been brainstorming platforms for optional enrichment and engagement. For my learning, too! #hiphoped
This sounds great and more universities should follow your lead and make sure that there aren't any barriers that would stop the organizations from being able to attend your campus #HipHopEd

The concept of "summer loss" in education implies that learning only happens in the classroom, and we know that's not true. If we can teach students to think critically and intersectionally, they'll pull knowledge & skills from all kinds of situations, all the time. #hiphoped
Folks always say they want to do better with ‘self-care’ But not enough to say it or think it. We Must put boundary lines in place, take concrete steps to slow down, clear the mind, calm the soul and BE. #HipHopEd
Learning over the summer extends to educators as well. Spend some of that time getting familiar with the culture of your students. Get hip, don’t shun youth culture #HipHopEd
Relaxing, de-stressing, self-caring, unwinding are important parts of summer, too. Give yourself - and your students - permission to really, really take some time off. #hiphoped

YES! And read books, write down our stories, ask our questions, have deep conversations with each other, retreat into self, sit on porches and drink good wine. #HipHopEd
That’s An expectation of compliance based education. Enforce that framework on creative minds who have every reason to question/rebel and what do you get? A culturally Incongruent response to institutional bigotry. #hiphoped is summer loss, in some cases, code?
Teachers could learn something new, last year at #HipHopEd conference @Young_Guru spoke about learning photography & this year @BEVERLYBOND spoke about learning to DJ. Taking the opportunity to study & learn a new craft would give teachers new skills to reimagine the classroom.

As educators we must use the summer for self-assessment. What can we do better 2 successfully engage youth & facilitate real learning #hiphoped#hiphopdev
Listening to rap music through our class has shown and taught me alot about the struggles of the African American community and how they use music to get their story out.@DrScottWeiland#HipHopEd

Learning is a process and completely ongoing for me. Learning never ends and in the summer it shifts primarily to self directed, my choices, joyful reading and writing. #HipHopEd
Amid a well-deserved break, we should still be practicing critical reflection. Summer experiences likely affect our worldview, biases, etc.--ultimately, our teacher identity. Maintain/develop self-awareness so we're better prepared to understand our Ss come August #HipHopEd

Popping in and out tonight #HipHopEd fam. But some summer strategies that come to mind include a “books & breakfast” event, summer book club, something digital like FB group or weekly twitter chat with your students, etc. Small, feasible actions that can make a huge difference.
As a veteran educator with school wind down, we do book tastings of professional books Especially 4new teachers who r starting their journey in craft and career. I work hard to be able to provide copies of my fav prof books to the 11 Ts on my team. #HipHopEd
School counselors need to be aware of summer melt. National averages show 1/3 of graduating students of color enrolled in college never physically make it to campus by the fall. Keep checking in with your youth! We can forget about Ss once they walk across the stage #HipHopEd
#HipHopEd for almost a dozen hrs I spent a week in Mexico...hiking, yoga, meditating, reading. Always came back 2 teaching full of energy! #freemindsfreepeople

It isn't the same as being in the classroom, of course, but summer is a good chance to read books and do some extra studying you wouldn't get to in the school year so that you come back better than ever. #HipHopEd

Summer time is the perfect time for educators to not only reflect on the school year but also spend time reflecting on their selves and their teaching practices. #HipHopEd
I think our class has allowed me to do both. It has helped me hear a variety of different perspectives on life from artists and communities that I may not have otherwise have had the opportunity to gain exposure to #HipHopEd@DrScottWeiland
Teachers should always be challenging themselves to grow in their praxis, so summer learning loss on our end is self-inflicted imo. I know we need & deserve the break, but no days off #HipHopEd
Think for Ts, loss of learning happens when they don’t know what to read, watch or engage in. Often schools send Ts off for summer with no connection or grounding about what all can be accomplished over summer. #HipHopEd
Retweeting this so I have it. What a brilliant idea. Teacher learning over the summer doesn't have to solely be learning educational theory. It should be about learning anything that could help our craft. #HipHopEd

#HipHopEd I'm co- teaching a short summer writing workshop. A parent asked the Director if we "taught Hip Hop?" I wished the answer was something like, "We allow them to be free and express themselves. So, yeah- HIP HOP!" I'm proud. She just might be appalled.
Educators, use the summer as a chance to flip the script. Speak to young people about what they enjoy. Add some of those ideas to your pedagogy in the fall. Respecting youth culture is essential to #hiphoped - the summer is the perfect time to dive in.
Youth Culture is in the driving seat of society globally. It is very important for educators to spend time keeping up with what young people are doing. #HipHopEd
Popping into #HipHopEd just to remind everyone that homeless shelters experience significant turnover over the summer. So many families came into our site immediately after the school year ended. They didn't usually bring books.
I think back to my list of the things that would change learning and most of them have nothing to do with school proper. Most are basics—sleep, eat, exercise, fresh air, safety, relationships . How can we use summer as repose for students to increase readiness? #hiphoped

Similarly, schools also send students off 4summer with no link and/or connection school, literacy, books or music. Families don’t gather around school in summer & the school house becomes foreign. Children should be tethered learning at all times. #HipHopEd
That's a spiritual affirmation right there because it's the 30th anniversary of that record which is probably my favorite Hip-Hop record @bigdaddykane FACTS #HipHopEd

This is one of the most overlooked, and one of the most necessary, parts of the job! One of the biggest things teachers have to continually study... #HipHopEd
If we listen to Hip-Hop through a mental health lens our opinions of the music, the artists and the fans should change! #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth#HipHopEd

But they did have a background in cultural, non-print texts. They know Cardi's rags-to-riches narrative. They know who Drake's got beef with and, by extension, they're familiar with argument. They know what flow is and, by extension, they're familiar with text structure #HipHopEd
Using the summer to take care of yourself and engage in activities that inspire you will allow you to reimagine lessons and ways to teach content #hiphoped
I’m constantly digging to learn the new slang, dances, memes, music artists, viral YouTube videos, social media platforms etc. to always stay in tune with the youth #HipHopEd
From an #Expertise lens, summer is prime time to immerse yourself in the mentoring & practice you need to improve your own practice. Engage in deep study, get input from your pops, and get better. #hiphoped
.@hiphophacksedu are being planned allllllll summer long for students to explore the intersections of hip-hop + tech + entrepreneurship, etc. Holla! #HipHopEd#HipHopHacks
Just a friendly reminder that this commitment to non-print texts is all the more important for children who are not privileged with consistency-- in education, in housing, in accessibility to print. #HipHopEd

The place I teach at has a semi-academic summer program that most of our kids attend. Allows teachers and students to grow and learn with each other without the stress/pressure of the mandatory curriculum of the school year! #HipHopEd
#HipHopEd fam can we start a book drive that operates all yr around? I would love if #HipHopEd donated materials to classrooms, students, teachers, community activists, etc. We’ve come a long way from just doing this chat— last weekend’s conference is proof of our power. #LevelUp
If we listen to Hip-Hop through a mental health lens our opinions of the music, the artists and the fans should change! #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth#HipHopEd
Before you begin to scapegoat Hip-Hop music driving youth to engage in drugs, take a walk and spend some time in their neighborhoods, homes and minds #HipHopEd#ThisCantBeLife
As much as you can in the summer, lean INTO conferences, webinars, forums, EdCamps, book clubs and camaraderie amongst professional learning networks. #HipHopEd
Yes, I believe we have the opportunity to be strategic in leveraging our network and our net-worth to aid in actual work taking place on the ground #HipHopEd We should look to pilot

As you terminate your group counseling sesisons - hype students on writing a summer mixtape on co-determined emotional themes which they can record in Sept (or schedule studio trips with them across summer) #hiphoped
One thing Adults must learn how to do is “listen” to hear what the youth hear and don’t hear so that you can engage from where your youth actually are and not where you think they are #HipHopEd
Say That! It's so imperative that the "youth development" organization leaders practice the skills they try to teach. How you go'n model but can't walk!? I've seen my fair share and just want better for all of us. #HipHopEd#UpliftTheChi
One challenge is when city leadership herd young people into programs that are supposed to be focused on youth development but the real goal the city cares about is safety for the tax payers and not the development of the youth #HipHopEd
Hey folks—I’m planning a summit on gun violence and amplifyingthe message of some awesome activist students @ParkwayCity if you want to get involved, it’s going to be hot. I’ll keep you looped in #hiphoped check out #fillthesteps to see some recent news
@DrScottWeiland Do you think it's surprising there still aren't as many female hip hop artists even though Salt N' Pepa were so popular 20 or so years ago? I think it definitely had an effect, but surprised that it didn't have more draw #HipHopEd
Another difference I've noticed about today's music it definitely glamorizes the use of drugs a lot more then it did then. Todays teens are alot more curious and experimental, rapper/writers should be more cautious in their music to avoid that. @DrScottWeiland#HipHopEd
These classrooms tend to be very mixed grades-- we had 3rd graders and 7th graders in the same summer classroom. None of us were trying to turn down a kid when the alternative was that kid being stuck in their unit all summer. #HipHopEd is the common denominator.
I’ve been big into reading lists lately (I think subconsciously I’m gearing up for comps next Spring 😆) and I think giving some suggestions to Ts for summer reading can help with the loss factor. Summer is a great opportunity to refine your understanding #HipHopEd
I’m constantly digging to learn the new slang, dances, memes, music artists, viral YouTube videos, social media platforms etc. to always stay in tune with the youth #HipHopEd
So then the activities have to be able to scaffold to the youth and as much as possible be self-guided with coming together to present #HipHopEd As well as pairing up with delegated roles based on ages
Connections with #hiphoped community need to be deep and Ss need to know who’s down. If one of you is in town, I want to drag you in and get my Ss to meet you. And they SHOULD KNOW it’s worth it. Same with artists. Make your classroom the place to be 12months
I love this online community more than anything, but man do I already really miss all of us being in the same room wrestling with these topics face to face like we did Saturday. #HipHopEd
Imagine if our schools and local districts acknowledged and engaged local artists for the benefit of the overall education experience. We can look to @HipHopPrez and @du1869 for an example with @chancetherapper#HipHopEd
#HipHopEd fam, gotta bounce— but sending you love and light as always! My goal for this week is to tweet out some recommended readings for Ts looking to replenish, refresh, and refine their understanding over the summer. I’ll use our hashtag.
Dean Martin sang about coke. None of this is new really. I think the point of #hiphoped is to seek to understand not reprimand or diagnose all the things one thinks is wrong
A word.
Summer is a great time to rededicate yourself to your spiritual self. Prayer is Pure Power. Find your center, clear and calm the mind and tap into the power of what/who you believe(in). For me, it’s ALL GOD-all the time. 🙏🏾#HipHopEd

Thank you all for making tonight’s chat a game changer. We as a community refuse to be distracted and we are focused on being the change agents to make the revolution real and televised #HipHopEd#CU167
Educators, don’t shy away from being around youth over the summer. Stay grounded in the young ppl. #HipHopEd is about community and building together. Construction can’t only be 180 days/yr
Also a friendly reminder to my New Yorkers that 1 in 7 NYC PK-5 students were projected to sleep in a homeless shelter this school year. #HipHopEd's impact on homelessness is not a niche. Your work is vital.

You can put #HipHopEd in your weekly calendar during the summer to keep your swords sharp. We do what we do every week and in some or fashion, everyday ✊🏾

Take time to learn from/about Ss reality. Some Ss recently told me they couldn't be taught by someone younger than them. I said I learn from them all the time! Transfer of knowledge goes both ways #HipHopEd
I keep our ELA Google Classroom open and challenge my students to continue writing. This student made the challenge as a digital “poetry poster” 🔥🔥🔥#HipHopEd
I totally agree, rap and music can convey the same message as a novel in an English class. Some people just don't recognize that because it comes in a different medium than pen and paper @DrScottWeiland#HipHopEd
Imagine if our schools and local districts acknowledged and engaged local artists for the benefit of the overall education experience. We can look to @HipHopPrez and @du1869 for an example with @chancetherapper#HipHopEd
In many school settings the teacher will have to lay out the ground rules that watching “This is America” is a higher end thinking exercise where there is rarely a clear right or wrong answer. Schools don’t promote true student voice #HipHopEd

And let’s face it, some of us need the summer to keep ourselves real. Get deep and connected bc the allure of the academy and research sirens is away and the next thing you know...you’re square #hiphoped
If you can, stay in contact with your students throughout the summer. Even set up a social media platform for your class. Encourage them to engage each other in the same we we all do every Tuesday night. #HipHopEd
Hip-Hop can be used as a beneficial tool for students in many aspects. Hip-Hop reveals history, a story, it paints a picture. It helps explain what times were like during events in a lifetime. @DrScottWeiland#HipHopEd@TheRealHipHopEd
The dancing of the students can be viewed as a coping mechanism and the notion of never looking behind you. It’s existing in your own reality even at the cost of being aloof #HipHopEd
Listen to an artist that you haven't listened to before, watch a show that you know your students are into, play a game of fort nite, take a walk through the neighborhood #HipHopEd
