Hey all! Phil from Northern Virginia signing in. I teach 6/7 US History I&II and am the founder of #waledchat. Thanks for coming out tonight! @L_Roadcap are you free tonight??
Good evening! My name is Jason and I’m the Director of Elementary Ed @CravenCoSchools in North Carolina! I’m looking forward to learning with each of you this evening! #waledchat
Intros: Welcome to #waledchat! Please introduce yourself, where you are from, your role in education, and invite a friend you’d like to join us tonight! #waledchat
Congratulations! Please check out https://t.co/jXs5t5YUJC for Resources. Feel free to download whatever you want. Also, my new book https://t.co/QirLAnwLDV has practical strategies for all students & all abilities. Pls let me know how I can support you! Happy to help! #waledchat
A1: Since @MarisaEThompson gave me the push with @TweetDeck I've been finding great use out of it. I'm using it now! Otherwise, Google Keep has been a lifesaver lately #waledchat
A1: Gone back to basics a little bit this year as I work with a group of students who are just getting devices in their hands - so Google Slides has been an essential part of my classroom! #waledchat
Hi #waledchat! I’m Eric, a gr. 4/5 teacher from Ontario, Canada. It looks like many of you have more snow than we do here! I’m writing an Ed. blog, creating videos, & sharing resources at https://t.co/6KGS5o26Tc Looking forward to another fantastic chat!
A1: If I had to pick one, I would say @RemindHQ. I basically text parents quickly throughout the day. Kids love it. Parents love it. And I save so much precious time to dedicate to other parts of our classroom! #waledchat
A1 Our iPads and @Seesaw have been the greatest tech tools fot my class. Ss are recording themselves and their thinking. Parents are much more involved in our academics as well. #waledchat
A1: @Seesaw is my favorite tech tool for students! I love using it for sorts, math exit tickets, and a way for students to verbally respond. This year, I also have access to a document camera! I have loved figuring out how to use it so far! #waledchat
A1~ really loving @Buncee this year w/the #room44pride littles ~ great creation tool & supports all levels of our little learners to push their thinking & show what they know in lots of different ways 😊 total #workinprogress & looking forward to our learning this yr #waledchat
Also @GetKahoot is a game changer. Students LOVE designing assessments for each other (and me...I’m still undefeated in The American Revolutionary War). #waledchat
A1 I’ve been using @goformative quite a bit this year. It allows me to assess my Ss quickly using many different types of questions. I can assess all 4 language domains. #waledchat
A1: Flip Grid has been wonderful. In literature circles, my students recorded responses to their discussions. It helped me listen to all of their discussions, which is impossible otherwise. #waledchat
A1: for the good and the bad of it I haven't used much tech this year. I have been having problems with my laptop so things have been pretty low tech for me and my littles. #waledchat
A2: The tech tool, no matter how cool, needs to serve a purpose in streamlining my life or the life of the Ss. If the tool is cool, but doesn't serve to make life better or easier, it's a glorified worksheet. #waledchat
A1: I have really loved using Google Draw. Its versatility is bar-none, and almost any assignment can be done within it. Also, @goformative has been a great tool to use for bellwork, exit slips, and even target checks. My Ss love @gimkit and @quizizz, too! #gamify#waledchat
In reply to
@MrPStrunk, @goformative, @gimkit, @quizizz
A1: Tweetdeck helps keep me organized. And Wordpress has helped me build my web page. And, I've recently been playing around with Keynote for presentations. #waledchat
A1: @Seesaw! It was my main tech focus where Ss were involved! It’s helped communicate with Parents, activities saves time and paper and video journals are a safe place for my 17 ELL Ss to practice oral fluency! #waledchat
A1: My fav tech tool this year has to be @Flipgrid. My gr. 4/5 Ss love it! I can see so much opportunity for ongoing assessment, collaboration & meaningful discussion. Time & tech access is the challenge #waledchat
a1. #waledchat I have really enjoyed working with Google scripting with Sheets. It has helped me pull data from all kinds of sources and analyze them in different ways. Its connectivity to interfaces like Awesome Tables and Data Studio makes visualizing it pretty powerful too!
A1 part 2: I use tons of the apps: GoFormative, Pear Deck, Screencastify, Flipgrid, GoSpaces, Bloxels, DoInk, CoSpaces, ClipChamp, free online whiteboards, Story board that. I keep it diverse. #Waledchat
A1: I love @baamboozle for formative assessment. Getting Ss together to team up and answer open-ended questions instead of the multiple choice. Also includes "power ups" which add to the fun. #waledchat
A1: I’ve been using @padlet for a lot of my PD cohorts. I share resources on one, I have a shout out board and spot for collaboration on another, and then a Building Academic Language for ELLs Toolkits being developed on another! #Waledchat
A2: I think about the ease of use for both the student and myself. I also question if it's improving either instruction or learning. I don't want to use technology just for the sake of technology. What does the tool do that we can't already do? #waledchat
A2: First thing I think about is whether or not the tool is actually enhancing the learning experience or just providing an alternative means of delivering the same content / instructional strategy. #waledchat
A2: Is this something that is going to enhance learning? Is it possible to get this kind of engagement/learning without this tool? If the answer to the first question is "yes" and the second one "no" then I know it is worth adding! Tech shouldn't be forced in! #waledchat
A2: I am looking for whether it will help Ss learn, and what the functionality is. I then look for if it can do multiple things or if it is a 1 hit wonder. #waledchat.
A2: I think about if it is what’s best for my kids. Will it be beneficial to them and help them, or will they get frustrated and spend most of their time trying to figure it out? #waledchat
A1b- as I sit here and think a bit more my older littles have really been using Learning Ally, a audio reading program, to support them with their reading and comprehension. It is wonderful. #waledchat
A1: @Classkick keeps my kids engaged and fully connected to me even when I’m away from the classroom, a great asset when I travel to present! #waledchat
A2: I think 4 c’s - will it help students critically think, allow for creativity, allow for easy collaboration and communication. I have focused on tech way too much in the past and this has helped me think twice. #waledchat
A1 - I have been using Bloomz communication app a lot this year. I love how it has allowed me to build better relationships with my families and share daily pictures from the classroom. #waledchat
A2: New tech tools need to be just that, tools. I don’t want to consume the technology, rather, use it to create. If it isn’t intuitive or user friendly to me, forget about it! #waledchat
It is such a game changer! Levels the playing field and makes content accessible to everyone. That's why @MissKRafferty and I started blogging because we loved it so much. #waledchat
In reply to
@adaleylife, @MrPStrunk, @MissKRafferty, @Flipgrid, @Buncee, @Newsela, @MissKRafferty
A1. I would say using google classroom to create virtual PLCs. In large High schools, it it is impossible to provide everyone a common time for PLCs. Our physics teachers are unable to meet in person so they PLC in google classroom. #waledchat
A1: professionally-Google slides! School upgraded from whiteboards to interactive TVs. Using slides for morning meetings, guided reading schedule and anchor charts! #waledchat
A2: Is this just a gimmicky tool, or will this tool add some meat and potatoes to the lesson. If it's just a fluff tool to get kids in front of screens but provides no enrichment -- thumbs down. #waledchat
A1: I have to give a shout out to Audible. Paperback books are my jam…But busy schedules & many priorities mean I don’t always make the time to sit down & read. Being able to pull up Audible on my phone/Bluetooth has helped me check books off my to-read list. #waledchat
A2: Ease of use!!! Tech should enhance learning, not take time away... If students are going to struggle to understand how to use it and I'm going to struggle to get performance data back from it, what is it really bringing to the table? #waledchat
A1: So far this year, my favorite would probably be Nearpod. Allows for multiple forms of instruction with multiple opportunities for formative assessments #waledchat
A2: New tech tools need to be just that, tools. I don’t want to consume the technology, rather, use it to create. If it isn’t intuitive or user friendly to me, forget about it! #waledchat
a2. #waledchat What am I doing? Why am I doing it? How will using this tool make that job easier/more powerful/more purposeful? How will others be affected by this? How sustainable is it going forward? Is it person centric or process centric? What happens after I leave?
A1: My goal this year is to implement more coding and today I introduced the kids to @codesparkapp. They were excited before they even tried it and fell in love with it! They can’t wait to code more tomorrow! @doriedance@techcoachmanny#waledchat
A2 Can it be used across platforms? Can a 6 year old access it effectively? Can I use it authentically or is it just tech for tech’s sake? Can Ss create and show their thinking or are they just plugged in. #waledchat
A2: Is it kid friendly? Does it help us organize our learning? Does it encourage active student engagement and provide opportunities for them to respond? #waledchat
A2: Probably $$. It's so hard to get funding from admin for a whole school, b/c it might be wasted by those who won't use of don't see value. I don't like showing a great tech tool to a teacher, but them have to inform them that it's a "free-mium" #waledchat
A2: Is it kid friendly? Does it help us organize our learning? Does it encourage active student engagement and provide opportunities for them to respond? #waledchat
A2: What is the end goal using this tech tool? Is it to engage students? Increase critical analysis? Assist with collaboration? Add creativity? Gamify? I want to know how and WHY I am going to use this new tool. #waledchat
A1. Jimi from Long Island joining in. My biggest game changer this year has been quizlet live which randomly creates groups spread across the classroom. Ss compete vs each other to match flash cards. The chaos of math vocabulary flying around the room is truly awesome! #waledchat
A2 - List below
1. Time to master
2. Goal of app
3. Ease for students
4. How will it help
5. Why do I need it
6. How often will I use it
7. Is it a repeat of other apps
8. Is it free
9. Is it fun
10. Will kids love it. #waledchat
A2- How can I implement this tool in a positive way that is going to help my students be competitive or gain skills needed to further their education and make them competitive at the next level either college or career. #waledchat
A2: How user friendly is this? How will it support me in achieving the outcome I am working toward? In what ways can I share this with others/how can this be of benefit to others? Can this be used with students, and if so what grade levels? #Waledchat
A2. It needs to have a purpose, is it something that the Ss will easily be able to use in classroom?, what different things can I do with this tool? #waledchat
A2- when exploring a tech tool, I decide how feasible it would be to use in the classroom. I want to make sure the students can easily learn it and it would be a learning tool, not a fun game. #waledchat
A2: The main (and only) thing I thing about is “how will this benefit my students?” If it doesn’t improve student engagement and learning, then I’m not interested. #waledchat
A2~
~need it to have a reach for all learners
~effortlessly blends in all academic & social skill areas
~seen as an integral part of not a separate entity ~ no one & dones
#waledchat
I update assignments and grades there. Parents get the weekly updates form Google. It works really well for decaying grades rather than posting them to the official grade book before students have an opportunity to reflect & retry #waledchat
A2 Main questions I ask myself when evaluated a new tech tool are: 1. Is it easy to use 2. Does it improve what I’m currently using 3. Will thestudents find it useful. #waledchat
A3: I don't have a tool I'm under using, more like, tools I think are cool that I'm not using at all. Flipgrid, Peardeck, and Plickers comes to mind. I live in @Schoology and Google Drive. I need time to play! #waledchat
#waledchat The replacement thought is so important. Often times the choice is based on something that is potentially replacing something good, but needs some work. So careful analysis should be done specially with ed tech.
A2: Ss already have a lot of screen time on their own. For me, a new classroom edtech tool must be worth the added screen time. It must enhance Ss learning in some way. No ‘time fillers’ or digital worksheets welcome! #waledchat
A2: What is this tool going to add to the learning experience? Is it going to enrich the activity? Is it going to alleviate problems that would otherwise impede students from showcasing their learning? #waledchat
A3: I definitely know that I could be utilizing Google Classroom in a more effective manner. Right now, I just use it for bell work & the occasional assignment. #waledchat
A3: I haven't been using @SutoriApp to its fullest potential. I currently use it for my newsletter which I LOVE but would like to embrace it more for student use #waledchat
A3: Well... I've had a mergecube sitting in my desk for almost a year just collecting dust.
Have seen multiple tweets this week by educators who are using it in exciting, engaging ways!
I want to try! #waledchat
#waledchat The replacement thought is so important. Often times the choice is based on something that is potentially replacing something good, but needs some work. So careful analysis should be done specially with ed tech.
Q2: I want it to be student/user friendly, low or no cost, web based, easily accessible and engaging on multiple devices, and as "student safe" as possible without locking them down to the point of being nonproductive. #waledchat
A3 - SeeSaw is a tech tool I am not using to its full potential. Currently, the students are using SeeSaw to type 2 homophone sentences each week. I would like to get better at using it and showcasing the students’ work. #waledchat
A1: Absolutely loving @Seesaw. This week Ss are picture & video capturing their 1st trimester work as mini-student led progress updates to their families. I love this goes directly to their folks & immediate positive feedback can be delivered to them in text & audio. #waledchat
A3: There's 2 pieces of tech I know I don't use to their potential and that's #GoogleSheets and @Wordpress. I only scratch the surface of each.
#waledchat
A3 - I’d probably say Google. Even though I love it and use it frequently, there are new add ons everyday that pop up. Also, I’ve gotten comfortable with it, so sometimes it’s just easier to not add more stuff on. #waledchat
A3. #waledchat I again go back to scripting since I love working with it + its my teaching domain. I think lot still can be done with it if more awareness is created about it. It has real potential of being a great way a teacher learns about coding because the data is theirs!
A3: Our LMS is Schoology and it can do great things for differentiation and allowing students to move forward at their own pace but I just haven't been able to use it as much as I'd like. It takes a lot of time to set up student pacing and I just haven't had that 😭 #waledchat
A3: I use @nearpod for bell work, collaboration, & checks for understanding, but I think it can do more. And I haven’t checked out flash card factory from @PearDeck yet either. #waledchat
#waledchat We recently moved to a new LMS at my school. 2.5 years we spent bringing community members together to carefully look at what we had, what worked, what didnt, what our vision was, and then made a decision. Tools impact culture. So they cant be rushed.
A3 My projector and doc camera. I just got a new doc camera yesterday and it has amazing features- but it will take me time to learn them in order to integrate. Time is always the biggest factor #waledchat
A2. Impact on learning. How does it facilitate learning. Is it something extra just to say I’m using tech or is it an asset. Also ease of use. #waledchat
A3: I would really like to use flip grid more since I know students will have success with it! Therefore, I just introduced it as a tool for administering the high school speaking portion of the ESOL Language Benchmark Assessments I helped develop for the district. #waledchat
A3: Probably most of them! Sometimes I feel that I only skim the surface and I’m spread too thin. It is a goal of mine to get more engaged with some platforms. #waledchat
A2: How can it be integrated into my curriculum, how complex is it for Ss to use, can I gather data through it, how effective can it be in enhancing and enriching what we do. Has to have purposeful meaning. #waledchat
A4: I don't see any of these tools increasing productivity, but maybe making the classroom more engaging for Ss. Sometimes, the engagement piece is most important. #waledchat
A3~@googleearth ... need to explore all the ways we can better integrate all of its capabilities to expand our learning in the social sciences, cultures & global skills
#waledchat
A3: I know I'm not using Flipgrid to its potential. With the changes after the buy out I haven't taken the time to really work with it myself or watch any video supports. So much going on, just feel like time is slipping away. #waledchat
A3 For me I would say all tech I have I am more than likely not using it to its fullest potential. I try and research what I can but I am not a tech expert and it all@does so much that is beyond me. #waledchat
A3: I've recently downloaded Adobe Sketch & Adobe Draw - I wanted to create my own artwork for a children's book I wrote, but I'm still figuring out how to use it. I like drawing on paper, but this is new. #waledchat
A4: At the very least I could hand the reins of our classroom newsletter over to my students. They are fully capable of using @SutoriApp I just haven't let go of control #waledchat
A4: I'd like to find time to have student-to-student discussion take place within the Classroom stream. Now that I'm teaching a course that's only a semester long, it's hard to fit in all of my ideas! #waledchat
A4: I want to see if I can use the mergecube as a "breakout" tool or to have students create historical scenes. Any other ideas for MS history for those who use mergecubes? #waledchat
A3~@googleearth ... need to explore all the ways we can better integrate all of its capabilities to expand our learning in the social sciences, cultures & global skills
#waledchat
A3. @kami is my favorite pdf editor. I use it to screencast tutorial videos. However it seems like the tool has a lot more to offer that I just haven’t had the chance to explore yet. #waledchat
A4: I use .@todoist to track every task in my life. It helps me get things done by externalizing my brain. I reccomend it to everyone! #productivity#GTD#waledchat
A2 How Ss/Ts friendly it is and what does it provide that we may not already be using or have access to! Always looking for new process or product options! #waledchat
a4. #waledchat Training training training. The more a tool's purpose and power is spread in the community the better it gets critically evaluated in diff. contexts. I hope to start working on a plan that makes it easy to introduce and see the purpose/power of it with colleagues.
A3: gsuite for the Ss. I teach first and we are 2:1 with iPads. I have to focus on one thing at a time gsuite might be mine for next year! Ss have email addresses, just need to utilize it #waledchat
A3: Screencastify. I was really pumped about it last year and then ,going 1-to-1 this year, there are many other tech tools I have been playing around with. Hope to get back to using it to its full potential. #waledchat
A4- I want to use SeeSaw to have students explain their math knowledge, work on their spelling, and share their thinking during science. I want to use it at least twice a week. #waledchat
Q3: Definitely #GoogleClassroom Use it as a "home base" for 6 leadership teams and for chatting/docs, etc,but we could be doing so much more - it is a bit different, of course, than using it for its intended purpose with kiddos, but still ... could do a lot more. #waledchat
A4 - It’s a matter of trial and error. Time is a huge factor, as others have mentioned. I try to take small steps as to notvfeel completely overwhelmed. Most of the time it works, but not always. #waledchat
Hi Phil, thanks for the invite! Hey Ed Peeps!! I’m Jennifer joining in my first chat in a while (it’s been a rough start to the school year). I’m a HS Autism Para that co-teaches learning strats, social skills and English 9. #waledchat
#waledchat A3- Skype - I use it but just found these great Skype in the classroom lessons you can sign up for! Truly great to stay connected around the globe🌎
A4: I am hoping for a delay or snow day tomorrow and I will definitely use that time to get ahead and get resources gathered on Schoology for my classes! #waledchat
A4: I could find time to research and explore the flipgrid site to see how others are using it.
I recently saw that someone made a stop motion video on mitosis with it.
#waledchat
A3: I currently don't use Google Sheets to its potential. I have Ss use it to track their own learning. I also use it for my own data purposes. #waledchat
A3: I can do much more w/ @Flipgrid but being new to the Grid, I’m trying to make meaningful steps (so Ss see its potential & use it in meaningful ways). I’ve also been creating different Math YouTube videos for my Ss & would like to make them more interactive & fun #waledchat
A4- Looking more into their tutorials and training for @Flipgrid. My Google Experdition kit is coming in 2 weeks...need to start planning on how to implement that more too. #waledchat
#waledchat We are working on a planned virtual day to test out features for our LMS. We cant wait for weather to dictate our preparedness. :) Perhaps something to consider for next school year? Make it a recurring annual thing?
A4: One of the ways that I could use it more would to be have Ss collaborate on one sheet, or for Ss to use it more in their own ways for research, etc. #waledchat
A1: definitely Google Classroom. Being able to post assignments, track participation, add helpful graphic organizers online and teach Ss about the “To Do List” feature have been amazing! #waledchat
A4: Using @Flipgrid to replace Recap for our benchmark assessments is one way to maximize opportunity for its use. I hope using it for the assessments will encourage further use in ESOL teachers’ classrooms! I’ll also be using/promoting it during my PD presentations! #Waledchat
A2: I decide if I want to use a tech tool based on if kids like it and it’s easy for them to navigate. For me, it’s the same. I also don’t want it to be a filler, a babysitter, a time filler. I want it to be meaningful for kids. #waledchat
A3: @Nearpod is an amazing tool which enhances lessons. You can gather data immediately w/ interactive questions imbedded into lessons. I have saved many resources in my library with them but have so much learning to do with it! Love their virtual field trips! #waledchat
As not in classroom as worked as Director of L&T - would really to investigate and maximise use of @Flipgrid for professional learning with teachers and look at different possibilities for PL #waledchat
A5: Hmmm.... I just started looking into the usability of Diigo to curate sources. I'm not sure if anyone has a streamlined approach to curation tools, but I would like to know more, if you do. #waledchat
A:: PearDeck. We have utilized this intermittently during professional development, but I think we can learn more about it to enhance our whole group and small group sessions. #waledchat
A2: whether my Ss can use it successfully, if it AIDS in teaching content or creates laziness in me, if it has life application, increases S engagement, etc. #waledchat
1) It's free. 2) It allows me to quickly imput tasks. 3) It allows for easy project creation. 4) It lets me set recurring tasks. I could go all day! #waledchat
A4b - With almost all tech tools it’s good to think about risk bs reward. How much time and risk am I taking, vs how much true value will come from it. I use the 80-20 rule. If I think there is an 80 percent chance of the positive benefits over the 20 percent. Use it! #waledchat
A5: Currently, @ToddRisser, @WDoerwaldt, and myself are hooked on "Legends of Solgard." So entertaining we are in the same guild and use it as a source for some inside jokes. Lots of fun if you haven't played! #waledchat
A5: I love Instagram for getting a quick peek into others' lives, even though I know the large majority is carefully curated. I also am very into YouTube right now - it's so relaxing to binge watch makeup tutorials at the end of a long day! #waledchat
Thank you so much! I have been crazy busy. Will have to take the time over Thanksgiving break to learn more. Thanks for the resource. I have saved it on tweetdeck so I can remember. #waledchat
A1: I wish I could say I had one, but switching to Kinder has me on the technology struggle bus. Anyone have any favorites that are simple for the littles? #waledchat
A5. #waledchat I try not to attach the word "favorite" to any one specific thing. The choice of the tool is usually dictated by the purpose. Keeping myself diverse that way has helped. But would love to use more GitHub and social platforms like https://t.co/pv0pfHRM0s somehow.
A3: I need to spend more time on CoSpaces and read the forums that they provide. If I stay up to date on there platform and how Ts use it, I can find more ways to get my Ss to use it and meet the Missouri Learning Standards. It's doable. #Waledchat
A4: I know myself and I have to be able to fully focus on utilizing it so it sticks and isn’t a half job. I need to think of how I could implement it when planning in thr new year #waledchat
Yes, and in my district as a SPED T we have been working nonstop to get all new and annual IEPs completed prior to leaving on break for the next week so we are ready when Dec 1 count day comes. Ugh, I am ready for a week off. #waledchat
A4: I need to just keep plugging away and keep learning! As I get better on the Flipgrid and YouTube platforms, I know I can use more of their potential for my Ss. #waledchat
A5: Definitely Instagram! I love looking through people’s photos, and spend a little more time on the explore page than I should. A great source of laughter!! #waledchat
I have an app called hudltechnique I use for tennis coaching. I can take slow motion videos, place them side by side and break down technique........all on my phone during lessons! It has changed the way I teach tennis. #waledchat
A3. I would say most because b4 I can master a tech tool, another more shiny one gets my attention. I feel that I will be familiar with many tools but a master of none. #waledchat
yes, I hear you. In the last 2 weeks, I have had 12 IEP's and 3 evals to complete. I am going nuts. So many things I need to do , but on hold for now. #waledchat
A5: Basic and May not be what we are going for, but at the present time...FaceTime! That is how I get to see my family in Canada! I’ve had one visit home in the past 10 years...FaceTime is my lifeline! #waledchat
A5: I use @GoogleKeep for both work and home... I love that you can make checklist, organize notes into different labels, even share them with other people! Definitely houses my many shopping list, to do lists, drafts of various things, and even half baked lesson ideas #waledchat
It works really well in conjunction with the Getting Things Done method by David Allen. It's the single best book on productivity and organization I've ever read. @gtdtimes#waledchat
A5: EveryDollar for budgeting & tracking expenses and Aaptiv for guided workouts (which reminds me - I need to get back to using this one more). #waledchat
A2: I look for efficiency and simplicity. It must be educational, but I also don't want my objective to be lost in frustration of using the tool. #waledchat
A4: With @Nearpod I could share the lesson code w/another class completely across the country & have an interactive shared collaborative lesson-Can use some lessons w/?’s integrated into slides as a formative assessment, take a virtual field trip, so much can be done! #waledchat
A3 and A4: @cospaces_edu has so many possibilities and I feel like I have just scratched the surface of what is available. Let students discover and explore what is available. #waledchat
