Run by Iowa educators, #IAedchat is on Twitter the first, second, and third Sundays each month at 8:00pm CST. We have added #IAedchat LIVE to the fourth Sunday of the month at 8:00pm CST. This will take place in Google Hangout on Air. We will share the invitation and link to #IAedchat LIVE each month.
I’m coming down off of a tough loss field trip yesterday at Purdue - got back late this afternoon. #IAedChat then bed, folks! And the time change has me like….
A1: A leader is anyone who sees potential in others and inspires them to be better. Leaders are not defined by titles or status, they are defined by their daily behaviors and actions. #iaedchat
A1: You don’t have to have a snazzy title to be a leader. In our school settings, a leader could be a custodian or a bus driver, a para or a teacher, an admin or a lunch supervisor. Someone who leads with integrity and passion to make the student experience better. #IAedChat
A1: my definition of leadership within a school is anyone who is creating a culture where others are comfortable with who they are and are ready to learn! #IAedChat I mean who thought @jackblack would be one of the most amazing leaders in a school...it happened!
A1: A leader is someone of courage, tenacity, and resilience. Above all, a leader is someone who dreams about what can be rather than what is and commits to action. This vision inspires others to action because they see the part they play in creating a something better. #iaedchat
A1:
A leader
--organizes and facilitates effective teams.
--recognizes the skills, efforts, and growth of others.
--wants to learn.
--reads, reads, reads.
--is driven by a clear vision and a strong mission.
#IAedchat
A1: this has always been my favorite explanation. Someone who is in the trenches doing the work along side their team, who earns the trust and respect of their peers to the point that others choose to follow them. #IAedChat
A1: this has always been my favorite explanation. Someone who is in the trenches doing the work along side their team, who earns the trust and respect of their peers to the point that others choose to follow them. #IAedChat
A1 Leadership is building lasting genuine relationships and using those relationships to create a culture of collaboration where people feel valued. Leadership is serving others by providing them with the support and encouragement they need #iaedchat
A1: this has always been my favorite explanation. Someone who is in the trenches doing the work along side their team, who earns the trust and respect of their peers to the point that others choose to follow them. #IAedChat
A2 Positivity. Leaders set the tone for how they want their employees and customers to feel. Make it a point to make every interaction a positive one! #IAedChat
A2: honesty- not always easy, but you need it in order to follow the dream and vision.
Another one of my favorite quotes from Plato-
Honesty is for the most part less profitable than dishonesty.
#IAedChat
A2:
Honesty & Integrity- people might not believe what you say, but they'll believe what you do.
Joy- who wants to work w/someone and how far are you going to go without it? Joy is to leadership as garlic is to cooking- adds flavor and permeates. #iaedchat
It sounds funny but courage to be vulnerable is essential in leadership. That means stretching beyond our own limits and risking failure! That's courageous leadership! #iaedchat
A2 Integrity; a person, no matter the field, that is lacking in integrity is a compromised leader People of integrity are trusted as they lead Can't have a leader w/o integrity #iaedchat
A2:
--organization, including the ability to prioritize (and re-prioritize when needed)
--clear communication
--compassion for the plights and struggles of others
--consistency and follow-through, to maintain the course, in spite of challenges
--a laser-focus on goal
#IAedchat
A2: Vulnerability is key to being a leader. Having the courage to put yourself out there to be seen and not knowing what to expect in return. #IAedChat
A2: vulnerability is huge...you have to be willing to take risks and model that it’s ok to try something new—being a cheerleader for others...you have to want others to succeed, it’s not about you, it’s about all of you! #IAedChat
A2: Responsible Risk Taking; it shows others that it's okay to take chances without always having all of the answers right away. I also agree with many others in having honesty, integrity and vulnerability at the same time. #iaedchat
A2:
Honesty & Integrity- people might not believe what you say, but they'll believe what you do.
Joy- who wants to work w/someone and how far are you going to go without it? Joy is to leadership as garlic is to cooking- adds flavor and permeates. #iaedchat
Q3: We believe leadership is about action. Whether you are a teacher, paraprofessional, administrator, or support staff member, how do you demonstrate leadership in your actions? #iaedchat
A2. Trust-Somone you can go to to discuss things, who will guide a person in the right direction. knowledge-that the leader knows what they are doing as they ae leading the way! Empowerment- give opportunity for learners to lead as well! #iaedchat
A3: I work hard to walk the walk. If I expect that we are joyful, I have to be joyful. If I expect that we treat each other respectfully, I must be respectful. If I want lifelong learners, I must learn. I am not perfect at this but I am working to get better every day. #iaedchat
A2b: The Golden Rule. Reflecting on how I want to be treated and interacted with on a consistent basis helps to make my interactions more positive. It is so important to me that I have it tattooed on my body. #IAedChat
A3: take chances, go somewhere to learn more like in a couple weeks I’ll be at #ncte18, ask people for feedback, listen to new ideas, jump in and get your hands dirty doing the work #IAedChat
A3: I watch for areas that need help/support & push in as much as I can to provide help.I work hard to act on things quickly so others aren’t waiting on me to move forward. I always want to be doing something that helps someone else, whether it’s something big or small #IAedChat
Q3: We believe leadership is about action. Whether you are a teacher, paraprofessional, administrator, or support staff member, how do you demonstrate leadership in your actions? #iaedchat
A2b: The Golden Rule. Reflecting on how I want to be treated and interacted with on a consistent basis helps to make my interactions more positive. It is so important to me that I have it tattooed on my body. #IAedChat
A3: Two things come to mind- 1. Kind is clear. I’m working on being clearer about expectations and needs. 2. Spending time addressing fears and feelings to get to empathy, commitment and innovation. #IAedChat
A3...meeting the needs of others as much as is humanly possible. I know my teachers appreciate quick responses from me to their emails and/or messages. #iaedchat
A3:
Say what I mean, and mean what I say.
Communicate clearly and openly.
See people, and acknowledge the tough work they do.
Listen.
Collaborate--learn from others, share my expertise.
#iaedchat
Q3: We believe leadership is about action. Whether you are a teacher, paraprofessional, administrator, or support staff member, how do you demonstrate leadership in your actions? #iaedchat
A3 genuine in your conversations, say what you do and do what you say , act with fidelity, consistency and fairness. Be willing to listen to others #iaedchat
A3: You show leadership in your actions by following through, being available to others and then always seeking to get better. Never settling for "good enough," and always knowing there is more to learn. #iaedchat
A3 genuine in your conversations, say what you do and do what you say , act with fidelity, consistency and fairness. Be willing to listen to others #iaedchat
A4: "No one is just a anything here. You're part of the family and we all have a part to play." However, if divisions are allowed, this message falls apart. #iaedchat
A3 Leadership should exude the same virtues and attitudes that admin expect teachers to demo; fearlessness, try new things, admit when wrong and build from there. Should be consistent with the building’s culture. #iaedchat
A4: Nobody is “just a...” anything- if you’re at work in a building then you are an integral part of our school family. EVERYONE impacts what happens in a building, no matter what their title is! #IAedChat
A4 No matter your role in our school, we all have the privilege of getting to make a positive impact on the lives of young people: DON’T TAKE IT LIGHTLY! #IAedchat
Q4: My response: "Everyone here plays an important role in what happens on a daily basis. We all have value and fortunately we all get to see and experience different things throughout the day and year. We need to hear all of those perspectives to get better." #iaedchat
A4: Remind them of all the amazing they bring. Also get curious on where that answer comes from. At another time have a conversation around what is causing the shame they feel. #IAedChat
A4:
Every person in a school brings an energy into the building. Any one of us can change the emotional energy of the space, positively or negatively. Each and every one of us have that power, regardless of position.
#IAedchat
A4 everyone has unique experiences and brings that knowledge to the table. Even if you feel you can't contribute- listen- you'll be surprised how much you can contribute #IAedChat
I totally agree. We all have our own gifts and talents. Having a title shouldn't matter if you are putting kids first and making a difference with them. #iaedchat
A4: Nobody is “just a...” anything- if you’re at work in a building then you are an integral part of our school family. EVERYONE impacts what happens in a building, no matter what their title is! #IAedChat
A4: One action that I like to use thanks to @DayOneDrew is answering this question each day: How did I recognize someone else's leadership today? #iaedchat
A4. Any person in a school shouldn't be saying I'm just a....! Every person has the opportunity to help build culture in a school. Build relationships with Ss, faculty, P, and community! #iaedchat
A4 When I hear that, often I find that the person suffers from trauma. Experinces from being in a system where effort was punished and people demeaned. I tread lightly until I have more info. #iaedchat
A3: The best way for a group to move a piano is to lift where they stand. Leadership is the same -LEAD WHERE YOU STAND. Model the leadership that you expect from others and act rather than deferring leadership actions to those with higher positional authority. #IAedchat
Q3: We believe leadership is about action. Whether you are a teacher, paraprofessional, administrator, or support staff member, how do you demonstrate leadership in your actions? #iaedchat
A5: Every Friday, I write out at least two weekly Thank You notes (and yes I play the @FallonTonight
music in the background). I send them to different staff members to thank them for their leadership. #IAedChat
A5: I have a section of my weekly staff newsletter where I do staff shoutouts. Could be birthdays, special thanks, or something worth noting. We also fill each others buckets with these drops. Working to build a caring, positive climate every day. #iaedchat
A4. I remind the person how important they are to the success of every student in the building. Everyone single person has a role in that. It takes a community of people to make forward momentum. One person cannot do it all alone. #iaedchat
A5: LOTS of positive notes recognizing what great characteristics and leadership were shown during the week. Also, our principal includes shout outs in her weekly email to staff- all staff members can recognize other staff through a weekly shout out link #IAedChat
A5: Shoutouts are nice. Honestly, though, a genuine thank you for service/leadership goes a long way! I need to be more intentional about handwritten notes and deliberate face to face call-outs. #IAedChat
A5: I’m constantly reminding myself to step back. Sometimes people want you to do things for them but I really try not to. I ensure teachers are doing the thinking and creating and then I’m praising them for leading the hard work! #IAedChat
A5 let that person know the impact they are making they may not even realize how their actions demonstrate leadership. Educators are humble and need to be celebrated #IAedChat
#iaedchat
A5 write them a note, give a staff shout out, let them know in person, call their spouse or parents and let them know how great they are, share their success and accomplishments on social media #iaedchat
A5: I have begun this year to send out positive emails to teachers and CC their building administrators, SpEd Consultants, District Director, and Curriculum Coordinator. Making sure that everyone is aware of the awesome things happening. #IAedChat
A5:
Write thank-you notes, detailing the person's efforts and why I appreciate them.
Encourage people to fill another's bucket with specific but anonymous appreciation.
Recognize when someone takes a stand, supports a colleague, or engages in a difficult conversation.
#IAedchat
A5 Positive leadership is hard! I recognize them for their effort, give authentic appreciation, and help where I can! Most I know don’t need plaques or parking spaces, but chocolate helps! Pvt things for them to know they are building me and my S’s to be better! #iaedchat
A5: I two notes of appreciation each morning to start the day to recognize the efforts of others. Also send positive emails as well as telling people face to face that they are making a difference. A section of the Friday Focus each week is called Witness to the Good. #iaedchat
Q5 #iaedchat
Leadership can also be unintentional. Teachers can be positive influences on the quality of each other's teaching in ways they never intend!
How can leaders create conditions that encourage positive, intentional influence?
Ideas here: https://t.co/WuxF2J4Cbx
A5: the overwhelming trend seems to be a handwritten note but I’m writing it again because they have always been so meaningful to me...I need to start writing more! It’s so easy to type an email but handwritten goes so much further. #IAedChat
A5: As a district, we did a Gratitude Challenge for the month of October. The goal was to write a note to another staff member, support staff, or student each school day of the month. It was a great way to thank others for everything they do. #IAedchat
A6: When times are tough, it's important to stay true to who you are and to what you stand for as a leader. It's in these moments that others see what kind of leader you are and how you respond sends messages long after the situation is over. #iaedchat
A6: Some days, you grin and bear it, other days you offer a little vulnerability and share what you're struggling with. Most important as a leader is to be human- communicate care and concern for those you lead through your actions. #iaedchat
A6 When times are tough you are faced with 2 options: wallow in self pity or remember your WHY. My why is doing what is best for kids and that is what gets me out of bed each morning!! #IAedchat
A5: I two notes of appreciation each morning to start the day to recognize the efforts of others. Also send positive emails as well as telling people face to face that they are making a difference. A section of the Friday Focus each week is called Witness to the Good. #iaedchat
A6: Being a leader doesn’t mean that you always make the popular decision. Keep the best interest of the students in mind and it’ll help out in hard times. #IAedChat
A6 Times are always tough in some way shape or form, it is important as a leader to not give up when things are difficult, and also to know when to ask for help You can't lead alone #iaedchat
A6: I often try to make people laugh, enjoy the moment rather than worrying about upcoming issues, bring snacks in...little things like a cookie make a big difference when times are tough #IAedChat
A6: Relentlessly reminding others of the power they have to choose how they respond and what they respond to. When blaming or negativity starts to occur, I work hard to reroute the conversation back to something positive and productive #IAedChat
A6: I never want to say fully effective but I am getting better at setting boundaries. I always want to help so I would answer my phone or emails non stop. My time is important so I’ve set boundaries around it and I hope my Ts do too! #IAedChat
A6: When it gets rough, you always have to think about WHY you are working on this. It also means that it might not always be the most popular decision, but you have to refer back to your WHY- your students.
#IAedChat
A5: I two notes of appreciation each morning to start the day to recognize the efforts of others. Also send positive emails as well as telling people face to face that they are making a difference. A section of the Friday Focus each week is called Witness to the Good. #iaedchat
No different then when things are rough with S’s, relationship, relationship, relationship! Your gonna have S’s , P’s, or T’s that don’t like you. But are you consistent? Fair? Forthcoming? These are the areas that you stand on when seas get rough! #iaedchat
A6: It is essential to know what you stand for, what you believe in, and who you are as a leader. Act and behave daily to support your values. For me it is focusing on impact, empathy, courage, happiness, growth and vulnerability each day. Stay consistent. #iaedchat
A5: #iaedchat
Agree! I really appreciate receiving handwritten notes--especially when they recognize specific contributions and maybe even say why they were significant. (Much better than generic "great job"!) I keep the "good ones" in a drawer.
I also enjoy writing them!
A6 so important to stick to your non negotiable as a leader, stay true to your vision but allow yourself to be adaptable, be willing to ask for help and listen. (There May be a better way than the way you are doing it) #IAedChat
A6. Continue to move on no matter what the situation! Be genuine, truthful, honest, let them know where you stand and what is acceptable, hold Ss accountable! #iaedchat
A7: I am going to commit to acknowledging the positive work of others--whether through email, a note or a simple thank you--I need to get better at calling out good things when I see them happen! #iaedchat
A7: write a personalized note about what I see going on in @KatieDirksen room because I know it will be awesome! She always makes me feel so welcome, even her email the other day did that! #IAedChat
A6) The educational leaders I respect the most… simultaneously balance culture and accountability. It sure isn’t easy (at least from my perspective), but when it’s done well, the organization thrives. #iaedchat
A6. When times are tough, you need to go back to your core: your vision, your plan to implement your vision, and take a step back and reflect on what you need to do next towards your vision. #iaedchat
A7: Being clear about everything. That could be from basic directions of a task to my purpose, to feedback I give, etc. My goal is to remember that kind is clear and unkind is unclear and all that comes with that. #IAedChat
A7: Get out of my office as much as possible beyond hallway, lunch duty, and the scheduled visits. Be intentional about getting in classrooms more than I am in the office. The office will always be there, the kids are the reason I am there. Priorities. #iaedchat
A7: I plan to answer two questions each day of the week to hold myself accountable to being a better leader: How did I recognize leadership is someone else today? Did I try something that I didn't know what the outcome would be? #IAedChat
A7:
Be positive, in the face of negative emotions.
Help find solutions.
Be in classrooms to talk with students, and to give teachers meaningful feedback.
#iaedchat
A7: I’m going to make a point to say something kind/positive to each person I interact with tomorrow. Even in quick moments, I want the person I’m interacting with to leave the conversation feeling seen, heard and valued #IAedChat
A7: I am going to be very intentional in listening more this week and writing notes of appreciation to others who may not have a title in our school. #iaedchat
A7: ask more questions. I often find that I think I have something figured out about a person but asking one or two more questions would make my understanding so much better. #IAedChat
